  • Steve and Robin are back aboard Arabella after a long week in Granby.
The plan is to make their way to Rockland, about 80 miles up the coast, to help with the final touches and the launch of the schooner Hindu. It will take a few days to get there, with plenty of potential stops to hit along the way.
Searching through a guidebook for the Maine coast, Robin discovers Damariscove Island located in Boothbay, Maine. It’s known to be a place of wild and desolate beauty filled with rich history-worth a visit, for sure.
It’s crazy to believe, but Arabella celebrates her 1st anniversary on the water. And while she hasn’t ventured too far just yet, she’s been able to explore some beautiful areas close to home.
While Robin and Steve continue to dream of sailing to destinations far away, there’s still plenty of learning to be done in the meantime. Right now, it’s all about being close to family and supporting Steve’s mom.
And for everyone wondering how Akiva’s adapting to life on a boat, he is still learning how to relieve himself on board. More to come on that…

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Geologist here. The darker, layered rocks at Damariscove are the cooked remains of sediments from about 500 to 400 million years ago. The very light granular rocks are "dikes" of granite that were once seams of magma that pushed into (and cooked) those sediments from magma chambers nearby about 370 million years ago. Back then, these rocks were deep beneath a volcanic arc (like the Aleutian islands in Alaska today) called Avalonia that was in the process of colliding with North America during the assembly of supercontinent Pangaea. This collision pushed up a mountain range called the Acadian Orogeny, which is now part of the Appalachians. Nice find 👍

We had a similar problem trying to get our dog to poo on our boat. In the end we solved it by retrieving one of her 'offerings' on shore and putting it on her 'mat'. She got the message. Nice to see how well Arabella has taken to the water. I originally tripped over the video where you were pouring the keel and I have watched every video since.

Same! That keel pour video popped up among the many other STEM and maker videos I was watching at the time. Loved it so much I watched all the videos from the very first. Loving the care with which Arabella has been built, and also loving the small fixes and final touches that come with actual daily use. ❤️❤️❤️

We pronounce the island, damn-a-ris-COVE. The house was restored from an old Coast Guard Life Saving Station built in the 1800's. Most of the work was done by the Whitton family in Boothbay Harbor. Respect the entrance buoys and avoid the rocks to port of the entrance.

Perhaps it would help if you took the special carpet with you when you take Akiva ashore and made him do his business on it there? The procedure might seem a little less unfamiliar to him. Then it would be less of a leap for him to use it in the same way on board. (I'm not a dog trainer, but I've had dogs for a very long time.)

My dad died of mesothelioma in 2017. He was diagnosed in Dec 2015. I'd just started a new job weeks before in Seattle, a 1000 miles from home. I lasted until Super Bowl weekend, quit the job and went home. Best decision ever. I'm sure it cost me a lot of money. I'm equally sure it was worth it.

It was so great to see Arabella in Maine when we stopped even though you guys were away caring for your Mom. She and Victoria looked great and it was fun to see them. The weather was goofy during our trip and the fog you showed reminded us of our visit. The drone footage was fantastic and your panning shots were very smooth. You are getting good at this as well as confident as to how high and far away you flew. Akiva will figure out the "grass" thing... just need another dog to do it first and he'll go into instinctive "mark" mode. Continued prayers for your Mom and for you both. Thanks again for your kindness and these great videos!

Steve, I keep getting the feeling that you have a huge amount of pressure to go far, and I understand it. However that being said, this time you have spent close to home has given you time to find the issues with the boat and correct them getting all your systems sorted and in top working order.
When you do finally shove off and go long, this time spent now working on these things will pay dividends.
Don't stress yourself out over still sailing locally, you are learning valuable lessons and making memories you are going to cherish someday.

We had the lofty goal of building an RV and driving it from New England to Ushuaia and back. We made it to Antigua, GT, and turned around there. There were many factors in the decision to cut short, but the main thing was that everything had suddenly gotten much more expensive than we had budgeted for. Much like you all, we had to change our plans due to circumstances outside our control. It was a real challenge for a while to accept that. I wish I had some sage advice for you. Just remain open to a new plan and have fun wherever you end up.

'Family first !'. It was nice for me to see video of Damriscove. I have never been in there due to 'solo anxiety'. If I stopped in the area I would due the extra distance up into Boothbay area for the added security during a solo sail 'hard reset' overnight. If you ever go up, in that way, Boothbay is nice for a 'look see' (some nice traditional craft like a tancook Whaler schooner, etc) but for the overnight you can't beat the quiet and calm of 'Linekin bay' next door. Here's my broken record again: get a $30.00 'Davis tiller tamer'. It is a game changer for long stints on the helm (and will teach you tons/much faster as well about sail and helm balance). I laughed at all the sea lettuce on that Damriscove, mooring pennant and thought I am so delinquent in learning which of eat makes for good salad greens ;)

Learning to sail on that coastline with the weather, tides and fog will set you up for anywhere in the world the the time for further adventures come. I think Akiva's mat needs another dog to pee on it first.

Just wanted to continue to express my feelings about the excellence in the production of these vids. Amazing and unbelievable quality makes these the very best I've seen on RUclips. Thanks very much.

*- Steve, having raised many dogs and litters, I trained them easily by taking poop and pee samples and placing them on newspaper {sent-marking} as the designated place to relieve themselves.*
*- When they missed, I just took their waste and put it on the "newspaper".*
*- They picked up on it pretty well.*
*- As an aside, when outside, I always took the puppies to somewhere there were bushes.*
*- Doing this removed the idea of peeing or pooping on someone's lawn as they would go to where their might be a hedge or flower bed at someone's home. It worked very well. [ Note, this was before there was the plastic sandwich bag idea that works so well now.]*
*- I hope this can be of some help to Akiva and you.*

To be fair to Akiva - I don't think I could relieve myself knowing it was going to be featured on RUclips.
