"I don't do maintenance" Then loses two solar panels when the wind picks up. Lol. I really like Barry. I enjoy following his journey. I prefer the sailing bits, though.
Hi, just wondering what you do to look after the steel hull, and protecting/treating rust. Does the interior have to be removed ? I chatted with Nick Skeates some years ago, (he designed the Wylo yacht). He reckoned every 5 years taking everything out of his boat to sort the hull, which apparently rusts from the inside.
Every upload, no matter how harrowing the conditions it portrays, is assurance that you're still out there, somewhere safe enough to upload a video. You're on an amazing journey. It's hard, it's tough, it's dangerous, but it's the most beautiful journey one can take. Amazing.
right? always makes my day.. its a true "okay stop everything, get a coffee get a snack and then watch the oldseadoggo" moment.. the only channel i actually do this for :D
If you don't enjoy sailing in rough conditions you can stick to day-sailing close to home in fair weather and calm seas. However, everyone prefers to watch videos of those who are adventurous and skilled enough to safely sail the oceans. As a skilled and lovable but geriatric blue water solo sailor, Barry is in a class of his own!
Thanks cousin for the real time update and Barry hats off to you too! Looking for love around the world and you’ll probably find it where you started from! Or on an island!🙂🧉
Dear Barry. I have been following you since the start of your journey. What a lovely soul you are. I think many earthly souls envy. Just do it. Life is short. Thank you for inspiration.
I have deleted my real time update, as so many people said that they would stop supporting Barry via Patron. That was certainly not my intention. He runs on an extremely modest budget and really needs your support. Thanks Malcolm Perrins
@@superwag634Some followers said if I shared information on Barry's position they would no longer subscribe on Pateron. Weird as far as I am concerned, but each to their own. Malcolm Perrins
The big tall ship you saw is Solway Lass. She was built in 1902, has been used in both world wars and is now used as a commercial vessel doing tours around the Whitsundays. Depending on when this was filmed, that might be me up the rigging!
I pulled into that exact same harbor of Refuge in July of 2001. Was much more packed and tight with boats that night, but I remember going to the back and seeing shallow water before coming back out a bit. Same yellow markers too.
The tall ship is the Young Endeavour, a gift from the UK to Australia for the bicentennial. It is operated by the Australian Navy and runs youth development programs around the Australian coast.
Only now that I have completed a 15 month refit and am starting to sail solo in SE Asia can I begin to understand your courage, fortitude, skills and perseverence.. I recently hit weather a fraction of what you have been thru and my nuts sunk into my boots and panic set in . .. well done mate ..
Despite your troubles with the weather etc, I’m so impressed that you and the other guy (both old enough to retire) are doing what you love …. to pinch a quote from The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which funnily enough was about folks of a similar age …. there’s no present like the time! Luv U Barry mate, keep really living life! ⛵️🍺🍕🎸
Well, thank you. Mister perrin, You are a sight to behold thrashing around on your ship. Nice to have neighbors on the sea And where the heck are the seagulls., Especially that one you Called mister wilson I think. Always enjoy your videos as you're one of the best. Can't you next time barry and thanks❤❤❤
Excellent video - one of your best. Because you told a really engaging story with music that added to the drama. I’ve followed your adventures since almost the beginning and - being of a similar age to you - you’re really inspiring me. We have to tell those youngsters you’re not over the hill when you get past 40!!! (And the rest 😉
Have you entertained the idea of a small tiller pilot set up to your Hydrovane? I had that set up once connected to my Monitor Wind Vane for light air days, and it worked very well and drew almost not power.
I’m on a mission haha! You know, I don’t do maintenance. I’m busy fixing things all the time. Haha That’s my skipper. Gorgeous Shaddy Skipper. She’s a little bit rusty but who isn’t ey’?
When that storm hit and the solar panel flew off I felt for you I was thinking that would call for a day below deck and a nice hot pot off coffee till it blew over good thing you made it to that inlet I hope the harsh weather blows over and you have good days ahead
Wow, wild! The weather up there is seriously unpredictable. Hinchingbrooke Island is gorgeous, hiked right over that and couldn't have got wetter! Good episode.
About to leave the Azores and head across the Atlantic toward the Bahamas. Should be picking up a new handsteer boat. Sailaway 2 is great!! Hope you didn't lose any solar panels in the storm. Guess we will find out! Apparently
When your mate was handballing the anchor, I started singing the volga boatmans song 😅😅😅😅 sorry about the solar panels , now thinking of a better anchoring system for mine, those little screws through the ali obviously are not enough in a big blow.
Yes, Barry's a funny man. Can't wait for when he goes down to the Southern Ocean and round Cape Horn. He's got a steel boat and might attempt it in mid winter. I love his sense of humour.
Chances are you will never see this post, but let's give it a try. A video has been recommended to me by RUclips. A "flopper stopper". A "device" to stop the boat from rolling around at anchor. It's just a flexible bucket tied with a rope to the jib pole and left to hang over board, deep in the water. Should maybe help with those nights at anchor.
You should consider "sea dog clamps" for your solar panels. They're incredibly strong (I've had two hold a 100 watt solar panel through 100kmph winds). Plus if you're concerned about the weather over night you can easily remove the panels and put them down below. I highly recommend them.
I have a friend from my youthful days who is always harping on me about my not doing enough maintenance. I too Barry, am unable to do much maintenance because I'm too busy fixing stuff! 😆
"I don't do maintenance. I'm busy fixing things all the time." Classic.
I used to do the same. Then I switched to doing maintenance but it seems now I'm maintaining AND fixing all the time...
"I don't do maintenance"
Then loses two solar panels when the wind picks up. Lol.
I really like Barry. I enjoy following his journey. I prefer the sailing bits, though.
We say that we have to maintain on fixing..haha..either way you work. But its worth it
lack off.

One of your best Barry. Let's here it for old men having a great time sailing in exotic places!
I’m with ya there Patrick!
Yeah, I reckon a group circumnavigation for solo old blokes on boats would be a great idea.
“You know I don’t do maintenance…I’m busy fixing things all the time!” 😂😂😂
Best sailor slogan, "I don't do maintenance. I'm busy fixing things all the time."

Er funkt noch, also lebt er noch! 😆👍
Make a tee shirt “old sea dogs don’t do maintenance they are too busy fixing things!” I’d buy one for sure

What is this statement all about?
I will never stop...

Be safe Barry and thanks for taking us along on this great adventure.
I'm glad to see you making the most of it Barry. I felt your pain when I saw that solar panel fly. Fair winds.
The big tall ship you saw is Solway Lass. She was built in 1902, has been used in both world wars and is now used as a commercial vessel doing tours around the Whitsundays. Depending on when this was filmed, that might be me up the rigging!
looks more like STS Young Endeavour of the Royal Australian Navy. Gifted by the UK in 1988.
Wild opening and ending! I hope all is well. To all of those in Beryl's path, wishing you the best. 🤞
I love watching your adventures. I want to clean your boat. LOL
I tried to grab the panel myself!! SOB!! Glad you are OK!!!
What does that tall red thing on the back of the ship do? Looks like the wind pushes it! About the same height as Seadog! Thanks anyone!
Glad your doing well Barry! Nasty storm, just got caught up on your video's. Looks like the White Shadow and Perkins are still OK as well. Cheers🍻!
Great sailor 👍 beautiful video .
Greetings from the beautiful city Punta Arenas Antarctica Patagonia Chile 🇨🇱 qqq

Harry, my dads name. Your courage that you have shared in living is of great encouragement to me and others...blessings...m
Well, it looks like ya found a boat to sail with. That's great! Collin Archer canoe framed hull, I love those boats. USA, NW!
Kudos, Uncle Ron! You da man! You da man, too, Barry! -Darcee
Keep fighting the good fight. And drink some more beer. Beer always makes everything better.
Until the morning I find
"I don't do maintenance" I guess there could be a lesson there.
Spanked in a Blow.....Life at Sea, regroup, and repeat.....smile buddy, you are living the Dream ❤
Buddy boating👍🏻… my respect to you both!
Another old sea dog here. My addiction to the sea can't even be broken by the solitude that is so lovely but grinding.

there's a West Sail 32 in SF Bay for sale. I think they're asking 15k. It was at the Napa Valley Marina. Great boat.
Whales yea baby!
Great job Barry. I would of stayed at the first Anchorage. Yes lots of respect to the other MAN.
Beautiful Down winds is Also Lovely important.......🌏......
"Columbian marching powder"🤣....I've never heard it called that before😆....safe sailing and thank you for sharing your videos 💙🤍⛵

Stuck in the middle with you!!
Ooh! I have had solar panels blow off boat. If I was pulling anchor against wind a reefed main up would give some aid, unless currents were all wrong.
The opening scene - just brilliant! :-)
What a guy, being following him since the Caribbean, best of luck barry😊.
Love your channel Barry.
It Got me through some difficult times.
Oh Barry your adventures are really great to watch thanks so much. And you have the best music in your videos of all the sailing videos I have seen.
Lovely scenery.
That was the best reality sailing video on RUclips in a good while.
Respect.

Epic to stumble back across your channel great episode 😀
Been there done that. SAME conditions at Mourilyan Harbor.
The CRUISING the CORAL COAST is an EXCELLENT resource.
Great episode Barry 😀😀😀😀 Rob and Jan TAHLAI TIGER
Great mission up the coast , I prefer yr boat than the sea snail , specially if you hit anything
Lovely spot
aha! you have found yourself a full brimmed hat, well done sir.
Have you entertained the idea of a small tiller pilot set up to your Hydrovane? I had that set up once connected to my Monitor Wind Vane for light air days, and it worked very well and drew almost not power.
I have the same set up, a tiller pilot on the hydrovane tiller (with a simple remote switch), for light winds.
Welcome to sunny North Queensland.
Glad to see you and Ron having fun together, miss the laughs in Bundaberg. Fair winds mate
I’m on a mission haha!
You know, I don’t do maintenance. I’m busy fixing things all the time. Haha That’s my skipper. Gorgeous Shaddy Skipper. She’s a little bit rusty but who isn’t ey’?
One of the best you have put out in a while
When that storm hit and the solar panel flew off I felt for you I was thinking that would call for a day below deck and a nice hot pot off coffee till it blew over good thing you made it to that inlet I hope the harsh weather blows over and you have good days ahead
Punctuation!!
Liberate is a beautiful boat!
Wow, wild! The weather up there is seriously unpredictable. Hinchingbrooke Island is gorgeous, hiked right over that and couldn't have got wetter! Good episode.
Respect Uncle Ron!!!
Lekker man lekker 🇿🇦
Hang in there Barry !
Nice video Barry..remember Cpt Cook sailed these parts of NQ in an enginless barge...
13:41 always the optimist Barry🎉
Catch.
You

I wax hit by a storm in the Med. last week, destroyed my Genoa and almost my tiller. Fortunately I have a Halcyon 27.
No at 72 uncle Ron is a mighty mighty man
I was aboard a west sail 32ft flush deck 1973 turtle bay Baja california enjoyed cheese burgers yes they made flush deck
His windlass looks like the one I had, a Simpson and Lawrence Sea Tiger. A fantastic, indestructible windlass
Royal Australian Navy youth sail training ship ‘Young Endeavour’. Gift from the UK 1988.
Theres something to be said for no maintenance, you always have something to do...
When your mate was handballing the anchor, I started singing the volga boatmans song 😅😅😅😅 sorry about the solar panels , now thinking of a better anchoring system for mine, those little screws through the ali obviously are not enough in a big blow.
I adapted an aluminium system designed for house roof fitting; bracket gripping the panel. Yes don’t trust the holes through the panel frame.
We had tanbark sails!!
God vid. Love the last part.😂😂😂😂
Barry, maybe when u put the panels back on, you'll use bolts not cable ties hey😲, great vlog, loving the Australian coast. 🇦🇺👍😂
Yes, Barry's a funny man. Can't wait for when he goes down to the Southern Ocean and round Cape Horn. He's got a steel boat and might attempt it in mid winter. I love his sense of humour.
Thanks for sharing mate, take care. Brian in nz.

You made me clench right there at the end! Hope you didn't lose that second panel.
Waiting for the damage report, cussing and repairs. Doing your best to stay safe.
Be safe. Enjoyed the video.
Hello my frend hope your well keep up the great content I love your channel
Wow Barry! What were you using to ‘secure’ (or not as it turned out) those solar panels?
Say hi to Ron. We met him in Suwarro many years ago. We were on our catamaran sailing to Australia.
Classic stuff, Barry
Hey barry, entertaining as always, gald to see you have your anchor light nice and low wher it should be.
You should consider "sea dog clamps" for your solar panels. They're incredibly strong (I've had two hold a 100 watt solar panel through 100kmph winds). Plus if you're concerned about the weather over night you can easily remove the panels and put them down below. I highly recommend them.
Thanks for the video, maybe you need to make the solar panels more secure or perminant.
I have a friend from my youthful days who is always harping on me about my not doing enough maintenance. I too Barry, am unable to do much maintenance because I'm too busy fixing stuff! 😆
Columbia March powder lol
👏👏👏
Lovn it
Another great video
