This week, it's THE BIG STICK: the main mast. The lumber from great-grandpa's black spruce tree has been drying for the last few years and we're ready to glue it up with a hollow channel in the center for the electrical items we need at the top of the mast: navigation, VHF, and nav instruments.
And of course we return to the cabin trunk (last week, we built that), but we also get a special visit by "big" Aaron, who took some of our ash stock to build a banjo. We get to hear it in this one. What a treat.
Next week we get to a bit of rigging details. Don't miss it! See ya every Friday.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

You guys don’t have a apologize for taking on a sponsor. Everyone knows that advertising runs the internet. And, it’s not lost on people what sort of investment is required to complete a project so complex and costly. Thumbs up to Ecoflow. 🇨🇦
I actually appreciate sponsorships. It lets me know what companies to support when I need whatever's being promoted. Good on you Ecoflow! 👍
It's quite nice to get shown/told what the sponsor is paying for/going towards though!
I have seen some really nice products available to boat owners , many might not have made it to market if the needs were not so evident as that has been shown in RUclips.
@@DennisBishop Exactly right.
It's an apology for people like myself who have removed 99% of advertising from their lives. I think i'm a lot happier this way and i do recommend others to try it.
If you can support the channel with great sponsors like Ecoflow and get really useful electronics and/or tools, I say go for it! I don't mind watching the commercials at all.
Cheers, Dion!
I agree. I'm not gonna watch a channel that clearly only does sponsored content. But I watched every second of this ad, because I know you actually stand behind the product.
@@AcornToArabella as long as it isn't raid shadow legends lol.
@@inconsteveable91 glad someone already said it 🤣
And the ladder/battery charger hack was totally worth watching! Love that idea.
The banjo playing really makes the scene . . . Fits right in, like it should always be there while the boat is being built. I can’t believe how well it fits: it just BELONGS!
This is what the country needs more of. Kiddos being taught real skills.
We’ve found that all a curious person of any age needs is an invitation.
I really don’t see a problem with ads. It’s helping pay for bits and pieces that Arabella needs. A great video and so interesting watching people ‘doing their thing’ - each to their own. We even got some banjo music! If someone had told me four years ago - every Friday night you are going to be watching a wooden boat being built from the keel up…..I’d have said something profane most likely.
This has been a great way to round off my week.
Good night from Scotland.
See you next week then, friend. 🪕🙌
It's amazing you got so far without sponsors. Don't apologize for doing what's needed to make a dream come true. As someone who doesn't have money to donate, I'm happy to sit through an ad read if it helps you guys out.
Thanks! 🙌🏼
Thank you Ecoflow for enabling Steve to get Keith and a really talented crew to build the masts. Steve's right Keith is not only a Master but talks to us skilfully so that is is training the next generation. That is what Master craftsmen do. PS go KP on the rooftop! Mike 🇦🇺
Hip hip, Mike! Cheers!
Aaron is very proud of his banjo that he made from Ash, his smile said it all and rightly so. Gotta love the Clawhammer Banjo Style of Banjo playing its awesome. You all are a great team and are gifted in so many ways and you all have done great job on the house top is coming along very good.
Cheers and happy Friday, Fon.
Actually ended up making a purchase from Ecoflow. No need to be bashful about advertising great products. Win for your subscribers, win for Ecoflow, and a win for you all! Wins all around! I hope to see you all at mystic seaport in the future!
Cool, Micaiah! Glad to hear you found it useful!
Arron . . If that is truly the first time you’ve played in front of eye balls, that amazing. The music (the feeling part) comes from that right hand. You have a very musical right hand.
It was great listening to a person who is a proessional who can do the job but also explain clearly what he is doing and why. And then the piece de resistance, a banjo pickin tune to work to. I remember the first episodes when you and Alex started to build the boat house and the authorities made you move it. What a journey.
The banjo looks and sounds awesome 👏🏻 great job on that Aaron.
Steve you do not have to apologize for marketing your channel you provide excellent information and entertainment to thousands of people and you should get paid for what you do I love your story I love following along and seeing you chase your dreams and you are an inspiration to me
Thanks for watching! That’s very kind!
Morning all, progress everywhere! Good to see. A Thank you to all for a very nice video. Forward!
I really appreciate you the way you guys are handling sponsors, and don't be afraid to take on as many as you can, I would happily sit through 10 mins of raid shadow legends if it means arabella gets the very best
HAHAHHA happy Friday, friend.
I must say, the banjo music was the best part of the video.
Good morning everyone! Aaron is busy jumping right in to help as usual. What a huge day, working on the main mast! You need to vacuum out the vents and ports on those power banks. There is so much sawdust in the nooks and crannies. Have a safe week! Oh and I loved when his mom brought his lunch and his hug at the end🥰🥰🥰🥰
Happy Friday, Kathy!
How cool is it that he's willing to hug his mom on RUclips? I wouldn't have at that age. And the Angry Birds hat is great.
Aaron's hat is the best.
My favorite part was when he manned up and caught the heavy end of that board without hesitation. Way to go, Aaron!
Ohh I really enjoyed Aaron connecting to his mom! The hug….That is what love looks like!
So love the legacy that you are building for Aaron and his total willingness to help (or get in the way :-) as well as the legacy you are contributing to all the other workers and viewers.
Seeing the housetop from the bottom felt like another mini-milestone. It actually looked like a full blown room!
Almost like it was going to look like a boat!!!! Lol.
The shot of the underside of the cabin top being dropped on was magic!
Yaaay! That’s what we’re going for.
We've got a foot of snow and it's headed your way! It's the most wonderful time of the year!
Gah! Don’t send us that stuff, Charles! We have a lil more gluing to do!! -Anne
@@AcornToArabella But I'm Mr. Snow Miser. Everything I touch turns to ice in my clutch. I'm too much.
Hahahah
It is always nice to see the progress being made. The cherry on top is the community that surrounds this project. It is much more than a boat. It is people at their best, working together and moving forward. There is something in that for all of us, wherever we are and whatever we do. Thanks! 🙂
Uh, in this project I think the phrase is "the cedar on top," or maybe even "the spruce on top." The cherry is belowdecks. (:
(That said, you're not wrong.)
The circular saw and the banjo..😂❤🙏🏻
Keith had his hearing protection on and was apparently pretty engrossed in the task. Guess those ear goggles work! -Anne
We have been waiting for Building The Main Mast for such a long time, since you made mention of it so long ago. Can not wait for the following mast build videos.
Crafting ideal scarf joints in the spars is quite the process! I wonder what your great grandfather would have thought had he known what the seeds he planted so many years ago would finally become. Surprised, proud, thrilled.
You don’t think it’d be, “WHY YOU CUTTING MY TREE DOWN?!” Haha.
@@AcornToArabella 🤣😂.
@@AcornToArabella I feel he would say "Trees don't live forever, use it before it rots, becoming unusable due to poor management." It was put into the ground to use and he would be happy to help his family with this. Perhaps his sprit is helping to guide Steve's hands.
The banjo is just so effing COOL! Steve, you have to learn to play now.
I love seeing the kids working in these videos. This experience and ethic will be with them their whole lives. Excellent!
This is definitely no longer a one or two man in his shed project. I did not count how many people there were featured in this episode but i know it was a lot. Besides bringing lots of progress it gives get camaraderie and joy. When you count all of us enjoying from afar then it is a hell of an effect.
Hear hear!
@@AcornToArabella, there, there. (Where, where? 😂)
That's a New England banjo if I ever saw one!
And it is gorgeous, sounds purdy nice too.
Cheers from Nashville
It’s a pattern from the Foxfire books. A celebration and documentation of Appalachian ways. www.foxfire.org
@@AcornToArabella I love the foxfire book! I got a few from my grandma as a kid!
I had no idea it was Appalachian in origin, that's very cool. Thank you so much for telling me that!
Treasure.
Great episode! The banjo pickin' added a poignant moment and the explanation of the fine points of building a mast were informative and enjoyable. Always good to see many hands at work, can't count how many folks have been involved over the last 4+ years I have been watching.
Good morning. What a pleasure to spend my coffee time with A2A. Mast glue up is amazing. My thanks to the gang. Have a great weekend
Happy Friday, Tom! Thanks for having coffee with us. ☕️😊
So many lovely people in this video. You are a really great bunch!
Aw shucks, thanks!
Good way to start the day. Thanks!
The white ceiling with the dark wood looks amazing! its awesome to see that coming together. Years in the making and now we can see for the first time how the end result will be like.
🙌thanks for being on the journey with us!
I like the editing technique with the boy at 5:32 to 8:31. Bracketing the "advert". Very good!
🙌
10:50. Being bike mech, the reuse of the box in that location is hilarious.
You're pulling off a spectacular project. A good sponsor helping is more than acceptable. It's perfect.I thank both of you for the ability to enjoy seeing this move forward.
Cheers, Mark!
Angeline the Baker! Nice job on the banjo!
River Mini is a good product. Bought one for my electric bike so I can take extended rides. works well.
Cool! Thanks for sharing your experience!
This whole video made me smile. Thank you.
Well your comment made ME smile. Cheers and happy Friday! -Anne
The banjo was great being played on the bow of your ship. Add a few old sea shanties and it'd have been about as salty as you could get being so far from the ocean.
Watching an episode of A to A is like a box of cholates. Ya just never know what you're gonna get. Fine woodworking. Rough cutting with a chainsaw ,and a Banjo maker. How cool is that?
😊
After binging 239 episodes, this is the first one that I had to wait for. YT was kind of empty without an A2A episode. Amazing project. thanks!
Thanks for watching, Larry!
Hearing people who know their craft explain it to us who really don't know how to build a boat is really enjoyable - and I feel like I'm learning so many things that you do in the boat house.
And while I think on some days you might miss the "times before we put the roof on the house top", it looks amazing in the newly applied white and placed in position - I'm sure it'll be wonderful to sail & live under.
Enjoyable as always with a little sea flavor pickin’. The level of craftsmanship throughout never disappoints.
That’s very kind, Kevin, thanks!
LOVED the banjo, what a great addition to another great video. Thanks again for all your hard work guys!
What a joyous ending to this video... the banjo playing and all those craftspeople at work. Heavenly!
Love the 'banjer' and from the faces in the background so did many of the crew. Amazing skills on display throughout the boathouse today. Aaron is growing up in a very lucky way. And the portability of those chargers - particularly the River mini and the Delta mini - along with their quick wall or solar re-charge - makes them very interesting and usable choices. Thanks for sharing the info on them. The mast and spar making is moving along much quicker than I would have imagined. That spruce would have also made some great guitar tops! Good morning to all from the hills and bluegrass music-land of East Tennessee!
Nice banjo tune that! Something so wholesome about the sound of that instrument:)
Greetings from Bedfordshire as I eat my lunch, great stuff as ever.
Oi Nick! Happy Friday! Thanks for having us over for lunch. 😁
The gentleman working your mast and spars has a lot of work ahead. Steve, you are always finding excellent help, this another gold nugget.
I have no issues with your sponsor segways. Always helpful products and these power systems are great!
Cheers, William!
Great episode. If I don't someday see a penguin-hat-wearing Aaron beaming with pride, standing on the deck of Arabella actually underway, I'm going to be very disappointed. BTW - as somewhat of a handyman, but with little-to-no real woodworking experience, I learned about something new today - toothing planes! Who knew? I would have just used some rough sandpaper. Nice.
You can probably get a toothed blade to work In one of your current planes as well.
Keith is an amazing craftsman and I like the way he talks about how he is doing the work and why. Great detail. Another great A2A episode. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, David!
I have no problem with a sponsor--especially if it is related to the project and could be something I could be interested in. It's kinda nice to learn about new products.
Thanks! We’ll keep it relevant!
That little ladder charging station is one Hell of a hack! Awesome.
🙌
That banger is a perfect fit with the project!
And Happy Friday from Normandy, France. Looking more and more exciting as the weeks go by. Bring on launch date....richard
🎉happy Friday, Richard! Thanks for getting exited alongside us week to week.
Nice to see all that help around, not to mention the expertise.
Indeed! We’re grateful!
Aaron is strong, he held on to that slab like Heracles! Great episode mast making and a handcrafted concert!!!!!
Banjo smiles all around. Nice.
😁
Nice Banjo! Neat to see that play at the end.
Happy Saturday morning from New Zealand. Awesome job KP. The boat is looking fabulous. Thank you Team Arabella ❤️🕊️🙏

Epic as always. I bought an eco flow delta after seeing you use it and it is staggering how quick it is to charge and how well it lasts. A quality product

Yes! It feels so amazing to see all that!
Happy Friday everyone from Plymouth UK.
Hello Plymouth, from Windsor
Happy Friday, Phil!
Lovely episode, as always. And the INFOmercial was indeed more info- than -mercial, so very interesting in itself. Now I have to think of a project to justify getting one of these... Nice shots of Ernest too. I would have liked some of the vintage footage of the spruce coming down (with a go-pro in the top? do I remember that correctly?) Early days, and have far you have come!
Thanks, Mathijs! Happy Friday!
Happy Friday A2A crew!
Loved the look of that white overhead from the inside of the cabin. And that banjo was cool.

Wheeee! Happy Friday, Harold!
After all these years watching you and Alix, and now KP- there is one thing that must be mentioned.

Banjo at the end was just beautiful. Not OTT. Just balanced. Nice!
Boy, you guy's really produce magic, like a smile and the glow in your stomach from a good whisky!
My goodness, what a sweet thought. Thank you for sharing it.
Excellent episode!
Cheers! Happy Friday!
You guys really ought to tighten up that hand clutch on your planer power unit. It is supposed to take a minimum of 35 lbs. of pressure to lock in the clutch. On irrigation wells we tighten ours up to 50 or 60 lbs. to prevent slippage. Your using three fingers and that is much too loose and if you ever put a load on the motor it most definitely will slip and likely to burn out the clutch. Take off the spec plate with the two screws and inside you will see what looks like a star wheel. Rotate the output shaft until you see a pin that engages one of the notches in the star wheel. Push it it and turn the wheel clockwise a few notches and let the pin re-engage. Try the lever pressure again and if it's still too loose, turn the star wheel some more until you get a minimum of 35 lbs. to engage and lock in the clutch.
Happy Arabella day everyone!
Happy Friday, Tracy! Hope your week is grand.
Love the banjo! Sounds great!

Just so beautiful, woodworking and home made music .
I could never justify a petrol generator, for a variety of reasons, but I was able to swing a "battery generator" with some solar panels. Very useful in grid power outages and remote use. Now I wish I had more reasons to use mine. New world.
Neat!
Very nice banjo!
And give that boy a pair of good working gloves for protection!
He’s got some… and sometimes he takes them off hahah
Very interesting the Mast Process , High Kudos 👍
