It's a special event to launch a ship, and though she's too small to call her one, this 38' wooden sailboat will be launched in a place where 600-ton ships can be launched. When see Arabella afloat for the first time, we want it to be an all-out celebration... and we have found the best partner possible for our boat launch.
But before we can get too excited about this boat launch, there's still so much more to do. Pine is traditionally among some of the best wood for boat building, and we'll be decking Arabella with the clearest stock we have. In this episode, we'll see her true sheerline for the first time, too.
We hope you got Arabella’s wooden dinghy news. We talk through the plans with John Harris and discuss Bob's vision for an extra special sailboat tender worthy of keeping Arabella company: • LIVE from 2022 The Woo... We'll have more on that next week, too.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Lots of videos to come! The project is about halfway done after four years.
Just to come with the exterior, bungs in the strakes, caulking the gaps, fairing, painting, thru hull (only one as a I recall), decking, covering boards, center boards, bungs for the decking, sealant between deck boards, cockpit, hatches, port lights, the safety rail (covered recently). If this is one week of work per item just the first third of the boat has 4-5 months of work left. fairing and painting will take weeks to get right, I would expect 3-4 initial coats and each is faired. The next third of the interior fitout seems to be 50% done with engine, finishing water lines, lighting and plugs, navigation systems, autopilot, solar, battery install, rudder and tiller, heater completion. And they started the mast work years ago and are maybe 15% done with the last third, the mast and booms, deck hardware, standing rigging, anchor, lines and sails. There will be more electrical work at that point too, lights, radios, sensors and such.

What a fantastic journey you have reached so far, and who would have thought back in 2011 when you read 'Fifty Wooden Boats, a Catalog of Building Plans' that in the summer of 2022 you'd be one year left before launch ... As a loyal member of the video watching crew, I can honestly say, I am proud of your 10 year wood boat building success ..
As always thank you KP, your attention to detail is amazing, Anne B. I believe there are not to many that can match your skills from behind the camera, and Ben, your editing and music scores are impeccable that very few can master ...

You guys are an inspiration for any "Makers" out everywhere. What I found most fascinating is the amount of teamwork and coordination it takes besides the usual attributes of skills and resources which are success or "killer factors" in any project. I am a retired scientist who has worked in the corporate world for over 40 years on big and mega projects but you guys have something that is a unique combination of "unlimited passion, dedication, and a willingness to share everything you are doing on this rather complex undertaking" which my view priceless. Can't wait to see you set sail on Arabella around the world

Wow! I really wish I could attend the launch. 5 years watching Alix and Stephen building a boat has been my definition of Zen. I never watch someone doing this kind of work before, and not planing on building my own.
It’s a share joy knowing that every Friday after work I get to kick back and spend 30min in boat heaven.
Thank you so much Stephen! You’re a champ!!! I truly love this Crew❤️
Edit: TBH, I see myself telling stories of Arabella when I’m 70 and gray. As a Norwegian I’m so ridiculous proud that you mast will be of Norwegian origin. Don’t know how many times I’ve told this story when mentioning Arabella, but it’s so fun. Hope to see her in the waters some day

I can t wait to see this launch (in the UK so don't think i can be there in person). What a journy, this is one of the "simple" idea of "let cut down a few trees and make a boat, that you get to see the real skill, patients, work and dedication that go into it make a simple dream a reality. The maker community and i do class Steve and the team as makers are showing that we still live in a world full of people with passion and drive to achieve their dreams.
And watching how kids like Aaron are encouraged to be part of the process gives you some faith that there will always be people like Steve, K,P and every one involved reminding us what it means to take life and live it to the full.

Quick word of caution: be very very thoughtful about adding rigidity. It can cause catastrophic failure by moving torsional forces to weak spots, or concentrating them at corners. In some cases the best way to deal with torsional forces is to allow a flexible structure to absorb and distribute them evenly.

    • @dayz_bob_bob_bob
      @dayz_bob_bob_bob 2 года назад

how many boats have you seen have a catastrophic failure due to too much rigidity?

    • @jscarborough9928

@@dayz_bob_bob_bob boat building isn't my area of expertise. I build out-buildings and renovate my 110yo home. That's why I urged caution. I have seen torsional forces turn a part of a home that was supposed to increase rigidity to the whole structure instead break the wall and ceiling around it, because the house moved, but the ridged wall did not.

@@AcornToArabella, I'm funny about changes. And I get attached to some things for likely very irrational reasons. But having said that, even at my age of 55 I realize that it's important to remove attachments from material things and old and unproductive ways and things that get in the way to make way for better thinking and in your case especially "smooth sailing." Me, I'm an equestrian and a land-lubber despite so many reasons why I shouldn't be having grown up on the south shore of Long Island and a Dad who was in the Navy in his youth and who built a small dagger-board sailboat at home, and a brother who graduated Kings Point and was a merchant seaman for a while, and who taught me to sail and kayak. The ocean and sailing never took with me.

    Dear. Anne and Steve,
First of all we’ll follow your habit by wishing you a a happy Friday. As always we loved to see your vlog and the way Steve and Kaylyn are working on Arabella in all kind of details. Especially Dick is watching your vlog a couple of times on an IPad after we both have seen your vlog on our 65” screen. He often wish he’s able to be there to help you as a volontair with finishing Arabella. We wish both you as well as Kaylyn including the entire families of the 3 of you all the happiness of the world plus we send you ❤️ from the Netherlands. Best regards,
    Willeke and Dick de Graaff

Interesting to see such an aggressive schedule, especially after watching Leo break down and illustrate in detail what's left with Tally Ho, which seems to be more or less apace with Arabella, but with a larger crew working it--and him saying it's more than 2 years out.

And a different scale of boat, as well. Our interior is nearly finished, and we have a collaboration taking place for spar building and the dinghy.

My wife and I have been watching faithfully every week for the last 3 years (I’ve been watching for 4). I just made hotel reservations a little before and after the weekend of June 17th - 1.2 miles from the museum.
We will be traveling from Montana and have zero experience with sailing and watercraft in general. What a wonderful time it’s going to be to meet new friends and learn a little first hand knowledge of an industry that is so far removed from our local experience (but I’m sure growing up on a Montana cattle ranch has its mysteries for the native locals of Mystic).
We’ll be watching with such a new level of anticipation now!!

Hooray! You’re in for a treat at the museum… it’s essentially a recreated village and a working shipyard. Huge! Glad you’re excited! I will be making a page with lots of links to local resources that you can enjoy while you are in the area. Be sure you have a subscription to our newsletter to know when that goes live. Link is in the description. Cheers, Steve! -Anne

As a youth in NZ in the early 1970s I served my turn following a bailer like your granddads and had the job of hoisting the bails up onto the trailer. That bailer was already old way back then! It almost killed me in the hot sun. Thanks for the flashback!

Wonderful news about the launch date, Steve! I am planning to be there. It's been a long journey, and you have more journeys ahead. I do hope, though, that you and Alix are still on good terms and he can be there for the launch. It seems only right that, since he was there for the beginning, he should be there for the end (or next beginning as I like to think of it).
