When it comes to scarfing the covering boards, there are three approaches to "Hide-a-butt" scarves! Many hands in the shop make boat building more fun...and more sawdusty than ever! And two critical 40-foot cuts after all that, which are true acts of derring do. The covering boards are such an important part of the boat deck structure, it's all hands on deck for this part of the boat building process of this DIY wooden sailboat.
A2A is in the news! These are great links to share with someone you know would love our story. www.bostonglobe.com/2022/07/1...

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

The day countdown chart is a wonderful addition! hopefully not too anxiety inducing!
Naaah not at all😅
On the one hand I feel like I’m watching grass grow. On the other hand that is going to be one fine azz boat. keep up the good work. I find it incredible how meticulous you guys are being as you build this boat.
I am completely awestruck.
Love you guys.
Can’t wait to see it float.
Aw thanks.
Not only is the creation of this boat awesome in every way, I marvel especially at the collaboration necessary to make every step happen. More hands doesn't always make the work go faster. Your team clearly believes in each other's abilities, communicates the steps, and has a can-do attitude. I wish all nations' leaders could do the same!
What a well oiled machine this crew has become. I am impressed with the coordination among the crew to get a task done and, yes, KP is a KEEPER.
Cheers!
I love it when different craftsmen show different ways of doing the same task. It shows that there are in fact multiple ways of going about the same thing in wood working. If the adze is frightening for you, go with a different approach. It may take a little longer, but it will get the job done, and if you are not comfortable with an adze, it can be a quick way to get hurt or go to far into the wood you want to keep as well. That is definitely a tool that takes practice to master. Good steel toe boots are highly recommend, even if you're not a beginner. One loose grain and that tool can come at you quicker than you think, or skin off the wood at an angle you don't expect.
BTW, cute puppy, but I would be showing it sharp tools and letting it walk soft puppy paws on cutting edges, KP. Glad it didn't get hurt. I know you didn't mean any harm. You are good people, just a brief lapse of judgement.
Another milestone, those covering boards :)
Your little pup is absolutely scrumpciously cute 😍😍😍😍😍
That’s Ernest!
It's like a good old fashioned barn raising. Those covering boards are a fine a fine piece of work.
A hive of activity. Nothing like a deadline to add a little spring to your step! Those days are going to fly by.
Nothing like the feeling of winter being right around the corner, too!
Keep up the great descriptions for Stephen. Adze Man was perfect today. It was great to see the many hands helping you this week. Also, keep up the great work KP! I really enjoy your descriptions, they are very informative.
Another great Friday watching talented artisans at work ! Including beautiful images from Anne and Ben ! Thank you all ! 👍🤗
Aw shucks, thanks, Marc.
Amazing Team. Arabella is looking amazing. Great work all round, from the camera to the craftsmanship
🙌🏼
Today I see a number of skilled boat rights demonstrating exacting wood working methods and a highly motivating but cruel sign noting the launch/ splash date. Captain you sir are getting close. God be with you!
🙌🏼
Fastest 22 minutes there ever was. Thanks for the llama shot!!!! I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the posters! You guys ROCK!
Aw thanks, Charles! Happy Friday!
The Adz is a mighty fine weapon of choice for woodwork or man vs man combat.
"Weapon" is right!! Seems like it'd be mighty easy to lose a toe or 3 using that thing !!
Wow, you guys are amazing! Very inspiring! I have learned a lot from you guys, Wich helps me with my project of building my own boat...
KP is a very good craftsman. A plus to AtoA.
It seems highly unlikely you will ever get all the sawdust out of it. Well done Ben another stellar week from the music department.
Feels that way sometimes!
Kind like getting all the broken glass out of a car, you will still find some years later when detailing, after you thought you got it all before, several times over.
More amazing work with the circular saw. You almost have me convinced it is a tool for fine work. At least in your hands.🙃
One of the best Fridays.....:)
Aw thanks!
Wonderfully steady hand Steve. That whole process was also made easier with the folks handling wedges, air guns keeping cutting line visible, removing screws and such. Nice job, good crew.

"Team work makes the dream work"
Hey, someone had to say it.
(Assuming someone didn't say it in another comment already. I just started reading the comments.)
I’m still watching and enjoying every “episode”. It is really looking great and I continue to be inspired by Steve’s vision and perseverance. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Outstanding work from Stephen, KP, Anne, Ben, and the rest of the A2A team. The covering boards look great! Thanks for sharing.
Cheers david! Happy Friday!
Wow the boathouse is positively buzzing! Great to see the hub of work in the final stretch!
A busy kitchen this week. All that activity is nicely contrasted with editing, music and your steady and confident narration Ben. This episode is another outstanding example of your craft.
That’s so kind, George! Happy Friday to you!
Some great work being done!
What a tight cut sheet. Inspirational.
The progress every week is amazing to see. The well thought out planning, the attention to detail, the concentration..... it is inspiring
Inspiring is definitely the word. Having not raised my woodworking skills until after I retired, I'm amazed at the level of workmanship this young crew of shipwrights achieve. Those covering board scarfs - it is so difficult to make them fit just right, and they turned out just beautiful! Inspiring!
Holy Steve is not timid with that adze, that was down to the line!
Adzes always look pretty gnarly while in use!
That heavy-duty ratchet strap is actually called a hot line hoist. Used in the high voltage industry to pull up power lines. The strap and handle are non conductive.
We’ve talked about them in the past as they were used when edge-setting the planks. KP’s new to the shop so called them something a little different, but we’re thankful for the lines person who gave us these rejected but perfectly fine hoists!
So good to see lots of help happening!! Awesome job guys :)
Thanks!
What a team, such a joy to watch her take shape.
Thank you, Keith!
So much work going on with a lot of skills on display. Fascinating….loved it….a great way to finish my Friday
Thanks for spending time with us!
Just great, the progress every day.......... proud moment for all next year, when Arabella in the water. Thank you.
Happy Friday, Tom!
Can’t wait till Fridays to see the progress which I guess will accelerate with your growing crew 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Boat is looking awesome great crew
This is more Art than blue print work. Just Amazing 👏
Aw thanks, James!
Sorry but a bit off topic .....my Gem collection arrived today, 23 July!!
Ordered 17th June but delivered to me in the Caribbean via courierplane to Miami ......so it can be done!
Total cost to me is $C 48.27 .....and this is by far the best $50 I have ever spent in my 67 years
I'm at home at my kitchen table and coveting these nuggets.
The difference in their texture is astromical and the smells from the samples are still there and pungent.
You have made an old man extraordinarily happy and now I can look back to the time Steve took an adze to the keel and have a much better idea of your work conditions
Thanks so very, very much and I look forward to inspecting the full samples on the boat when you moore up outside my yard 🇻🇨
Hooray, Len! Thank you for your support and we’re glad you like it!
Oh boy it's Friday again 😍 #happyfriday!
Haaaaaapppy Friday, Harold!
Happy Friday, A2A crew! Love seeing the progress being made!
Hooray, Paul, thanks!
The problem with this whole series is that RUclips only has a like button , for this channel they should implement a LOVE button
My goodness, that’s very kind.
Loving this story 👍👍👍
Thank you, Howard!
Thanks for explaining the nibbed scarf KP. In the last episode, when it was explained the covering boards would be scarfed, it happened that I correctly anticipated a problem for the first time as I learn about this stuff. Thanks for explaining how to overcome the issue.
It’s cool to hear that by watching these videos you’ve been able to see potential pitfalls with some methods! What a cool thing to hear, Scott. Thank you for sharing! Happy Friday!
Love seeing everyone taking a break and eating together! Nice reminder that this team effort really is just that!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Great to see the continued progress. Arabella has carried on during so many world events, and helps us all dream of a better day ahead. Sailing on the open seas
That’s a hopeful thought we’re glad you shared, James!
Dear. Anne and Steve,
Happy Friday first of all. It was good to see you got many people helping you with making more progress with Arabella and we’ve enjoyed the way all are working very precisely so this will turn out as a top quality built boat when Arabella will be ready. We wish you and your team lots of success with finishing this beautiful boat and wish you as well as your both complete families all the happiness of the world plus we send you ❤️ from the Netherlands.
Best regards,
Willeke and Dick de Graaff
Happy Friday, Willeke and Dick! We hope everything is peaceful and lovely where you are and that you’re having a lovely summer. Thank you always for your encouragement!
On-point methodology from boat construction to video presentation.
It's equally fascinating to imagine how this channel will evolve once the craft is underway...
[I'm living a younger ambition by proxy~] Thank you, Steve & crew!
Thank you!
Damn thats some crazy clampin action and great progress!
😁
For me, the most enjoyable parts of these videos is watching the skillful woodworking and craftsmanship: the cutting, shaping, fastening. The care in so many little things adding up to something big.
Thanks!
Loved the way Aaron turned stacking the offcuts into a gym work out. Very industrious young man. Thank you not only for the great video but also reminding me about nibbed scarfs. I can use those on the chine logs and inwales/outwales of my drift boat.
Thank you to all of those who joined in to lend a hand and especially to the behind the scenes crew of Ben and Anne who do such a great job of filming, editing and narrating. Take care all and stay hydrated and cool if you can.
Cheers, Matt!
Looking good! Been watching since the beginning and enjoying every minute. I like the way the team works together to accomplish the tasks and goals. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Thanks for being on the journey with us!
Sweet - it's interesting to see how the project has evolved. Same end game but different players. Absolutely love how Arabella is coming together. Very exciting!
Cheers!
I have a 12" plain, a hand drill, and a foot added. All belonged to my grand father and were handed down to me from my father. They are precious to me and I have never had need to use the adze. It was great to see one in use.
Thank you for sharing, Hubert!
New title for the Channel. ACORN SCHOOL OF BOATBUILDING. I love the way all of you are taking the time to TEACH the other how to do the job, with such patience that is lacking in so many places today. Showing that doing the job right is more important than doing it fast. I have worked so many places where they want the best person to do the job and get it done fast but not train someone else to do it. You are such a great teacher, and learner. To do this project with no boatbuilding experience but reading many books and then talking to experts, it is truly entertaining and instructional. THANKS
And thanks for being here!
Great job
Good old Steve proving again that there just ain't no shortcuts!
Excellent stuff bro
Ok. Ok. Now it looks like a boat. Well more than a cloud in the sky but not quite what she will be. Great Video. Looking forward to next week.
Thanks!
More progress!! Keep rolling along! Great episode! 👍👍👊👊
🎉happy Friday!
@@AcornToArabella yep whoot!! same to you all! 👍👍👊👊
@@AcornToArabella yep! Same to you all! enjoy the weekend! 👍👍
This is amazing all of you!!! I am sitting here on my couch enjoying a little Covid sequestration and clapped out right when I saw those covering boards get cut down to width!!!!!
It was a wild cut!
great team effort on those oversized battons 😉
Lot of peoples just working
Great !
Also the new little friend, the dog.
Saluti dall’Italia.
💪🏻
That’s Ernest! Thank you for watching and checking in from Italy!
Coming on leaps and bounds guys! Arabella looks better every week!
🙌🏼thanks!
Really shaping up! Actually starting to look like a ship now. Tons of internal work and all, that isn't so noticeable, but the outside is SOO noticeable.
Cool idea with the offset scarf joints.
Thanks!
Thanks for another great video, so excited!
PS. for anyone who’s not listened to any episodes on headphones I’d highly recommend it; will blow you mind!
Aw thanks, Mike!
Outstanding video montage !
Aw thank you, Jean-Pierre! Happy Friday!
So many skilled people in one place is amazing to see and to see young persons helping is even better. Keep up the good work and the videos. cant wait to the next episode.
Cheers, Anthony!
Steve your team is amazing. I like at times you can step back, and just watch, is amazing, you have moved a long way closer to your dream of launch. Awesome.
Thanks and happy Friday, Sonya!
Interesting and fast paced episode. Many hands do make more sawdust and great flow in the work. Thanks 👍
Hi Steve - What I said a couple of years ago still applies today - the process is everything. Either do it well or just don't bother doing it at all! I learned this many years ago as an apprentice boatwright here on the East End of Long Island. The 'process' or 'journey' in building this boat is what will hopefully be remembered many years from now. Many of us are loyal followers of your utube channel along with 'Tally Ho'. Hopefully someday you and Leo will have the opportunity of meeting up with each other and share boatbuilding experiences.
I love Steve's primitive use of the adze. With all the power tools at his disposal, he chooses the most basic tool. Probably one of the million reasons I love this project. I saw that 🦙 out in the field wagging it's happy tail. It looks like you had a handful with the extra help. It does make finishing all these small projects done while the really important things were left for KP and Steve to tackle like sawing the whole length of the covering boards. Who does the puppy belong to and what is its name? Cute little curly tail. Well the coffee was perfect and the the video was too. Have a happy and safe week. Stay hydrated!
That’s mine! 🐾Ernest. After Hemingway and Shackleton. -Anne
A comment for Steve alone, today I watched with complete joy as the capturing on video of this great precision work of craftsmanship is Bearings such beautiful fruit toward completion. Steve your vision is coming to Reality this thing you’ve created always in your minds eye first and then it turns into a product Of wooden splendor.
A sailboat named Arabella.
Cheers!
The cute puppy stole the show! Along with some great wood working.
😊🐾
Bravo aux ouvriers pour les scarffs 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Beuty
Watching all the different skills & techniques coming together to build Arabella is amazing - and it's fantastic to watch those skills then being shared and passed on to others as well.
looking great
Thanks, Rodney! Happy Friday!
Must have been a tough episode to film. So many hands on deck and so much going on. Great progress crew. Keep up the the good work!
Tricky, but plentiful loveliness is a good problem to have. -Anne
Good morning Akiva and Crew 😸😺
Happy happy Friday!
RottenBoat 😂 Classic, love it!
😉 our friend Tim had those printed up. Mostly does restorations. Hahah
Happy Friday!🐸
Happy Friday, Mel!
Given Steve's fondness for the adze, I'm amazed he still has 10 toes.
He does!
It's not the tool of an inpatient man.
Great little documentary by WCVB on RUclips. I didn't realize that Steve had never sailed before starting this project. Just don't give up the dream the first time you get seriously sea sick, Steve...;o)
Some of us get sick every time we go out, or at the start of every season. If the cold of winter in the shop or the slowness of learning, planning, and doing hasn’t deterred him, I’m sure he’ll be fine to take some Dramamine and carry on. 😁💪🏼 -Anne
And thank you, Geoffrey!
Sawdust R us. Fine video and Arabella is coming along Shipshape!
Cheers, Dee! Happy Friday!
❤️ now, detail, showability potential in the final . . . !
You have a very good team, very skilled and most importantly very motivated people. And the quality of your videos are on an other level compared to hollywood movies. You are very good film makers. I say you are in the top leque with George Lucas. And yes, Hello from Helsinki Finland.
Aw thank you Arto, that’s high praise! Glad you’re watching and happy Friday!
Good Morning from Sandwich, MA
Mornin, Bud! Happy Friday!
KP, you're awesome! I'm truly impressed by your work. Also, I love your cheerful positive attitude. Keep on keepin on, girl !!
Good afternoon; waiting for lunch from Normandy(as always) cheers...rr
Happy Friday, Richard!
Damn. That boat is looking BOATY.
Hahaha HECK YEAH!
Java and 'bella-must be Friday! ☕❤️
Happy Friday, Ryan!
Awesome
🙌🏼
I wish I could see your vessel's. It's n my bucket list
The first thing I do when I get to work on Friday Mornings, is sit down and waste some time by watching A2A.
😁 visiting the boat shop is never a waste!
AND you get paid to do it! Even better!
Happy Friday guy's, can I just say, KP you are a Diamond, your humour and can do attitude as well as your brilliant skills are a fantastic addition to the crew. And can i ask Steve So far what has been the most nerve wracking part of the build so far?? and is there any update on the Masts, sails and rigging yet or are they on hold til nearer the launch date? once again thanks for making my Fridays all the best from the UK.
I am hoping Steve responds, but here is my completely uneducated guess. He will start in late fall, early winter. complete them over the winter. Then in the spring, after the snows, he will remove the boat house, set the masts and pre-rig the ship, disassemble everything for transport, then do it all over again. I wish I had a small to medium crane to help with this, so he doesn't have to pay a crane company for several days. Not sure an excavator could do it, due to height.
@@ritste1654 the right size hoe could do it. They usually rig it a little past halfway, I have seen some small shady cranes used to step a mast
Howdy, Aynsley! There is a person we’ll be collaborating with in Vermont who will be working on all of the spars (bowsprit, main, booms, gaffs), we’re still figuring out sails, and rigging will be built closer to launch. More on all this later, of course, when we have news to share. -Anne
@@AcornToArabella Brilliant Anne Looking forward to it. Thank you.
I see you made the front page of the Boston Globe today
🙌🏼
Once again, clever cinematography and editing. The boat lady pausing to get her hat... The kid stacking lumber carefully only to have one wayward piece go wonky...
Our boat shed is filled with open eyes and warm hearts.
K.P., please commit this to memory: It's not stupid if it works!
Stephen, I've done NOTHING except buy a bilge dragon t-shirt, and yet, watching as you finalized those long cuts, I felt so proud of you! I'm almost 59, so I guess I can say that without being condescending. Well done, young man!
Cheers, Mark!
One can never have enough clamps. I've had friends come over for clamping day when I've had complicated projects.
Smart!
Good Morning y'all
Happy Friday!
Wow the sheer amount of progress since I last time that youtube decided to send me a notification is amazing 👏. You guys have quite the crew. It's coming along nicely 👌🏻. Where's Alex?? Steve's cool and all but from when I started watching this is was a journey of Steve and Alex building Arabella. I know things can change and priorities change, I just hope all is well.
Welcome back, Joe! Check out the description for a link to sign up for the newsletter, which we do because of the sporadic notifications RUclips sends. Also check out episode 200 for that update on Alix. He moved on, and all is well.
@@AcornToArabella awesome thank you for responding back and I'll be sure to check out ep. 200. Sorry that youtube doesn't notify me in the notification hardly anymore. I think it's just because I decided to take a break from youtube in general for a while and haven't checked up any of the channels I'm subscribed to in a long time. Hopefully with interacting on your channel and giving a thumbs up, and rewatching your content youtube will do the right thing and notify me when new uploads come out. Thanks
Nice video 👍
Cheers!
