- Thank you to EcoFlow, us.ecoflow.com..., who sent us their Delta Mini Portable Power Station to test. We've been wanting to monitor the refrigerator's performance and actual electrical draw, and it's been such a good tool for that.
We start this week with the shop itself. It's been a long while since we had a big visual change to the boat shop, and this week, we make preparations for installing the last three planks (sheer strake, second strake, and whiskey plank, from top to bottom, respectively). We needed the staging to facilitate constructing the interior, and we're finally back in epoxy friendly temperatures, so we're able to glue the scarfs for each strake.
Steam generators seem to have personalities and steam bending wood is a bit of an art. There are tried-and-true methods, of course, having to do with wood thickness and species that are good for bending, but then there are the machines to do it, and for that we called in Andrew Guest of Restoring Rosalind who owns THREE of these: One of his own making, and two he's acquired from friends of his boat restoration project in Mystic, Connecticut. If you can recall from a couple of weeks ago, we need to bend some of our locust covering boards (the outermost deck planking that covers the top edge of the sheer strake planks) to make the most of the locust we have left.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I have burn scars from running and maintaining those Jennys. Around 1984, Ft, Irwin, CA, I was in charge of the cleanup operation after a huge exercise. Was Awarded an Army Commendation Medal for my efforts.

Just bought an Ecoflow for my 21’ trailer sailer tri. It powers sailing instruments, lights etc. An excellent alternative to a conventional battery onboard. I just charge it up before I go out and with a portable 150W solar panel onboard can keep it charged if I go out for a few days.

It might be worthwhile to grab one or two cheap, battery-powered thermometers that can also keep an eye on the fridge and freezer temp separate from the main probe.

@@AcornToArabella Just to keep an eye on temps redundantly, and you can stick one in any suspected hot/cold spots to easily confirm your suspicions.

Maybe I missed it, but I hope the freezer is planned to go lower than 24 consistently? Because if you plan on doing some fishing off the boat (I would assume you are), unless you're reeeeeeeally thorough in inspecting your catch, you need to freeze it down to -5ºF for 24 hrs to get rid of parasites (or at least below 5-8ºF ish, but would then need longer time in the freezer). Obviously a bigger problem in some things/areas than others, but unless you plan on going through the arctic and/or antarctic regions it can be a huge problem. Obviously it depends on how you usually cook your fish or plan to (if at all) but please be careful, e.g. Anisakiasis can be very nasty and even trigger some allergies you didn't know you had...
Thanks for sharing the knowledge… the fridge was cooling down, and we do plan on high-latitude cruising for the most part.
The folks on “Onboard Lifestyle” channel repaired their compressor fan and modified their ventilation when their freezer temp got “up to 11 degrees”. My fridge at home’s default setting is zero degrees for the freezer and 34 for the fridge.

We had a steam generator just like that at Taves Boat yard in Provincetown years ago. Had it hooked up to a long wooden steam box. Steamed lots of yellow pine planks and white oak frames for fishing boats. Worked great

On the refrigerator front, have you considered using one of those 'Digital IR Infrared Thermometer Temperature Gun' to measure the temperature of the inside and outside to see how good the insulation is? I know they are not accurate, but within a few degrees, is a good way of seeing how good everything is.

Friday evenings after work are so nice with your videos to have for dessert!
Today I have to focus again on the sound: The sound recording and production is of such a high level! I am wearing good, big, noise cancelling headphones and while they give great fidelity, they also tend to give a closed feel. Not with your videos, where placement of noises is all around me, and I can distinguish one from another… to the point where, while brushing my teeth, something out of shot unexpectedly clattered to the ground and I jumped, ripping off my headphones… because I thought it had happened in my apartment!!
Ben’s music is sublime as ever, and he is evolving his daring, now with purely synth tracks mixed in prominently, I approve of pushing onwards! Favourite has to be the ‘classic’ Fundis though, which reached Knopfler level in my estimation and thus full goosebumps… were it not for my giggling, because where does he deploy it? Right after your wonderful guest declares his desire for terrifying experiments and you all join in to unload in order to make mad things happen. That juxtaposition can not have been accident?
Ending with steam that sounds as respect-inducing as it looks. Oh, and Akiva takes part once or twice and sounds so lovely too.

I built my yacht freezer,( 4 cubic ft) back In1994, the tub is aluminum with aluminum piping attached to the tub, (5 sides) then 5” of insulation on the outside the tub-is the evaporator plate and the condenser is in one of the FW tanks, No fan so big power saving plus very efficient freezer, had not one problem since.

As a person who has built kegerators and keezers. and someone who has been trained in "AC" systems.... I would place holes in the bottom and top of the divider board. Place a small computer fan on the top of the panel, sucking air from the fridge side. this will draw 'hot' air of the fridge and blow it into the freezer..... this suction will draw cold air (holes drilled down low) from the bottom of the freezer. place a probe to control the fan near the top of fridge. This will maintain the fridge. the freezer will self regulate based on the demands the fridge and freezer signal through the freezer sensor.
I did something similar to this in a keezer build with a friend. I built a false bottom. I drilled holes in the floor where the kegs would leave a path for air. with a divider, the fan sucked air from two "tunnels" created by the kegs, and blew that sucked air up one of the channels. So two downward flowing air spaces and one blowing up. without this, the keezer could never keep the kegs cold.... things would freeze... or be warm. with this gentle air flow things really equalized.
I have used Inkbird controllers with zero issue. My friend had a 120v version fail on him. it was the relay tips locking up. I personally have had zero issues with my setups. I have had 4 or 5 units. I would use a 12v unit if I were you. 12v for the fan, 12v for the regulator... easy.

I would suggest putting a rotating air damper (like the air damper on the firebox door of a wood fired stove) in that refrigerator divider plate, so if you find that you havne't nailed it on the first try, you can readily adjust the flow from freezer to fridge.

That is what's used in conventional refrigerator/freezer combos. When you turn the dial it opens or closes a small damper valve. Easy Peasy. Give it to Old George Westinghouse to figure out a simple solution.

A Mainer trick is to use plastic milk containers filled with water, freeze them solid and place them in the freezer. It should use less energy to maintain.
You can buy some of those at this neat little boatyard on Spruce Head… the one not far from Owls Head. Years ago, saw a sign for ice and went ashore to pay the honor box for a nice, self-contained block of ice. They’re perfect, and last a long time because that cold water stays out around the ice! -Anne
That steam generator reminds me of space heater that I used last year. LPG powered with electric fan, it put out a 12 inch flame and made short work of the winter cold, helping to cure cement overlay flooring. Bastard thing had a faulty earth connection and shocked the shit out of me. Despite the shock, it made our days easier getting away from site before it was too dark to see for the final polish of the floor...

Some thoughts I had about Arabella's refrigerator. The condensing unit's current draw increased when you turned the fan speed to medium and, I believe, it dropped as the increased air flow lowered the head pressure. I did not see a corresponding drop off when the fan was increased to high which tells me that medium was the best speed under those conditions. A head pressure control could be added to automatically control the fan speed for peak performance based on varying heat loads and ambient temperatures. I would have expected the box temperature probe to have been located in the refrigerator section, adjusted to maintain the desired temp at around 35 degrees, so that the freezer would always be lower based on airflow allowed across the divider.

Worked for a company years ago that had a steam ginny inside a shed, it was huge, ran off diesel, would MELT PAINT off of truck frames. It did a great job of cleaning anything.
