A Tight Squeeze On Deck, Fitting the Centerline Blocking - Episode 209 - Acorn to Arabella

Centerline blocking does one big, important thing, and it's something that's barely noticed below decks: it adds rigidity between deckbeams along the center of the deck structure fore and aft on any boat. A nice, tight fit that's pleasing to the eye from the interior of the boat is preferred, and the rabbets into which these pieces of wood fit, when regularly and lovingly executed, are barely noticed when they're done right. KP nails it. They're finished with TotalBoat Varnish Primer and TotalBoat Gleam 2.0. Links are below.
Some of what makes this boat shed special is the lumber we have access to. It's not like the dimensional lumber that KP has been able to order up in the past from the parts person at the yard they worked for, and we get their take on what it's like to start every project with a bit of milling from some extremely raw stock that's been out to dry for the last few years as it waits for its place on the boat.
We get some trout delivered by an avid neighborhood fisherman, and Akiva gets one of his many spring groomings (which now Aaron is pleased to execute on a regular basis since the weather has changed), and an Adventure Cart is realized.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I remember back in winter/spring 2018 stumbling up on this channel when they were pouring the keel. And I said to myself, "oh cool. Wonder if it'll launch this summer?"
I was fascinated with that keel pour. I've been watching ever since. Didn't realize that that was in 2018!
I did too
That’s how I got caught up in this too! Lovin it.
I started watching when they chose the trees.
@@PBarrPrince yeah I thought it was 2 years ago. Didn't realize it was 4 years ago
The birds will thank Akiva for that nest lining.
I had a malamute mix (malamutt) that produced similar quantitties of fur. I'd put it near the bird feeder in the back yard and withing a couple hours it was all gone.
My Lady friend had a Siberian Husky his lost hairs were used in the birds' nests. I got such a kick out of that.
You can tell it is nesting season when my dog starts scratching himself.
I was thinking the exact same thing! And just about the right time of year as well.
I always love clips of Akiva and Aaron. Aaron is always ready to help out, no matter the chore, he does with a smile on his face. It is interesting seeing KP's approach to the task at hand. Thanks for my weekly dose of A2A. Have a safe week!
Happy Friday, Kathy!
fantastic! a joy to receive these weekly gifts. thank you all
"Greatest project ever." "And an asset to the community." Oh, does it feel good to see how people help each other and give. Our world is full of good people!
Life affirming, for sure.
When KP said 'good enough', I thought ouch. Even if true it sounded odd to hear that kind of foul language on this channel! And around the young fella! Good enough? - I'm surprised the whole RUclips video didn't freeze and make me reboot my computer! If I associate anything with this build it's going back to shave a 64th, then another then again until it's perfect and ready for its close up. Over the build of this big-ass boat that's a lot of 64ths! Not trying to pile on - the work while looking relaxed must be very challenging and what KP is doing is amazing all while being filmed shaving those 64ths! A ton of talent there and I dig the outlook where all the world's a jig - you just gotta figure it out. KP got a jig for everything!
OK, I'm a reasonably accomplished hobbyist woodworker, but rough-cutting the rabbets with a circular saw? Daaaaamn.
Akiva seems like the best dog. Aaron is adorable. KP appears to be as meticulous as Steve. Really enjoying this final push.
Thanks, Charlie! Thanks for being here for it!
“Can I try?” I have no doubt whatsoever that Aaron is going to soak as much out of life as possible.
The gift you are giving that kid (Aaron?) is impressive. Wish we had more kids like him learning how to make their way in the world.
Aaron's adventure cart reminds me of a 1920s wooden wheelbarrow my grandfather converted to four wheels for me. It took me many places from back fields to the stars and past to future! Travel well Aaron! But the Arabella will certainly travel with you forever! Blessed sailing on your adventure cart!
Thanks for sharing that memory with us!
Even a glimpse of Annie B really brightens my day! X.
😊awww thanks, Simon. -Annie B
The first thing I do is "like" the video and then I settle in for what is always a restful, beautiful time. This video was no exception.
Thank you very much, that’s so kind.
Never a truer word said than that you (all!) are an asset to the community - both local and RUclips. Thanks for sharing this journey with us all, and for taking the opportunity to nurture those around you while you're doing it.
Thank you very much, Benjamin!
KP's shot at 19:00 with the trees in the background and the sawdust snow is pure art.
Still amazes me every episode on how far this has come along and all the amazing people that support it! Cheers and always looking forward to the next one.
I also stumbled upon this channel when the keel is made, but I thought "I wonder if this project will ever get in the water!" And now it's close! Love everyone in the crew and 9 year old Erin is so lovely, so talented and helpful! Looking forward to the launch!
KP you look very much nicer without your glasses on... this is the first time I've seen you without them.
You do very nice work. I'm glad to see Arabella getting such good work done on her.
Watching the interior coming together is AWESOME!!!!!! I can't wait to see it finished, but I had to laugh at the comments about why the house top isn't on yet. To those complaining... you can hump that heavy stuff up and down the companionway if you want to, but we who have lived that life are very much willing to stand back and watch you do it. And laugh. And then patch you up.... when we're done fixing the damage to the woodwork. 🤣
That snippet of lunch was a nice addition.
I cant wait to see next weeks episode! I hope you all have a great weekend!
Some wonderful life lessons. A great team, trust, integrity, good things take time. Everyone playing their part well. Thank you Team
This is the best video you've released. KP... you're an engineer and artist. Good filming. Good music. Nice explanations.
These little weird credits are wonderful
😁
You guys are creating art right before our eyes.beautiful work can’t wait to see the decking.
Wow, thank you, Ronnie!
I have been a follower since the early days when the 2 guys were cutting tree to dry in preparation for the build. And I have enjoyed every weeks posting. Thanks Mark Dutka Oakville Ontario Canada.
I been following this project for a few years and it's great to see the boat so close to being launched.. great work guys,,,
Thanks so much for being on the journey with us, Michael!
"Well that took a lot longer than I expected." - every boat project, ever.
One step closer!! Great episode and progress! Aaron and Akiva are always adorable!
A boy and his dog. What not to love ! Awesome, precise work, KP ! A visual treat for this old guy, crippled with hands arthritis. 😍
I like your observation the difference of buying store bought wood from that which is grown on the very land your doing your build. WOW! What a feeling!
Really looking great! Still the best accompaniment to Friday morning coffee!
Hey thanks, Ryan! #a2acoffeeclub unite!!

Great video. Love KP
Aaron is like a sponge: he has gained a lot of knowledge over his short years and will continue to do so. I bought one of those Japanese wood files a while ago and I love it, it is my favourite tool at the moment.
My Friday guilty pleasure. I don't even like boats but the quality of work is something I appreciate.
That means a lot and we're glad you're here, Shawn!
This is a good omen, the fish are already coming to the boat! It's looking awesome guys.
I love my weekly dose of Arabella enjoy watching every minute of every challenge put before you fantastic work peoples stay safe folks.
Thanks so much, George!
This is my favorite episode, beginning to end!
Wowie! That’s quite a compliment! Thank you and happy Friday to ya.
Looking at a finished product is one thing.................. Watching it being built is another. Arabela, Tally Ho and the huge wooden sailing cargo vessel being built in Central America brings home the fact that one just doesn't "Swish and Flick of the Majic Wand" to get things done.
Viewing the process gives us out here an appreciation of the journey towards completion.
Looking forward to the Sailing Video's in the furure ........................ enjoy
Thanks, John!
I’m building a wood plane….. the same but very different, I’m taking the wood and machining it down to 1/4” x 1/2” strips of lattice work… lots of wood working on a smaller scale, but same kinda goal I hope to fly it to Tierra de Fuego.
When it came to a new idea that may or may not have been successful, my late Papaw and my not late dad always said “If it don’t work, we’ll always thought it ought to’ve.”
Hope the fairing jig works y’all.
Thanks so much for sharing Papaw’s wisdom!
Oh those billowy billows of dog fur are so familiar to me. Lovely to see Akiva shedding that winter coat. The joy of pattern matching router bits is for real. KP is a joy to watch work too. It's so good seeing everything coming along. The end seems so close now.
- just the right time of year for nest-building birds to collect. Nature works.
This really nice video shows how much of woodworking (not just boats) is choosing when to use power tools versus hand tools. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Harvey!
Coming along nicely.
I can't wait to see this on the water!
Watching this on a warm day in the UK, great content as ever.
Thanks! Enjoy the day, Nick!
Not sure when I started watching but I binge watched all the earlier episodes! From sawing lumber on the farm to where she is now is just amazing. Steve is an inspiration to all of us, his drive is amazing 👍 Just to say I have been watching for a few years!!
Awesome! Thanks for being on the journey with us!
Mmm trout. Really can't go wrong. Smoked, baked, fried, trout salad sandwiches. Heck, I might even try the way you had it open faced. Cheers.
Take parts and material that are spread out over an acre, assemble them with precise forethought and desire and voila, you have a masterpiece! Nice work everyone, can't wait..:)
Hi Aaron, hi KP, hi Steve! Great episode as usual. Tell Aaron I CAN'T WAIT to see his adventure buggy! That young man is such a joy to watch. Thanks Steve, for your kindness and willingness to let Aaron be a part of A2A. He'll cherish this experience. He's so much like my grandson! Does everything! KP has her work cut out for her but she's doing it! Great job! Steve, come brush our husky Woofer. He won't let us near him with a brush. He's kind of a free spirit here at Yellow Creek and goes where and does what he wants. Now that he's older he stays home more though. You guys cheer me up and make Friday mornings so nice! Thanks again and all of you take care!
Aw happy Friday, Patty!
Join us next week when Aaron grooms the llamas!! 😆🦙
😁
Amazing as always
I've discovered an analogy in watching this boat build. To me watching this boat come together with its hard woods and incredible joinery seems to make life feel grounded and strong. I have to say it's going to be sad when this boat is finished....yet we'll all take away how our lives were strenghtened week after week
That’s very kind and makes our day, Jim. Thank you!
Classic Tom Sawyer/Huckleberry Finn move with the young Lad combing the dog. At least that was my first thought. LOL.
Nice work guys.
always fun to watch your progress.
Thanks for being here!!
Great episode! Keep rolling Arabella team! 👍👍👊👊
I had a Golden Retriever that would shed like that. I often wished I had saved all the hair/fur I carded out of him and just picked up off the floor. I'm sure I could have had it spun into yarn and had a sweater made from it. Then I would always have a piece of Dusty with me.
Yes, you could have had it spun into yarn, a friend of mine had four huge white Samoids (about the same build as Akiva) and his Mom spun the fur and then knitted super white wooly winter jumpers
"I tried to brush a cat once, but it really didn't work." Hilarious! Thanks for the continued journey and the chuckles!
😁😊
Wow Found the limits of the milwaukee and makita!
I’ve never worked with locus before that is one hard wood
Another good one folks.
Never actually ate trout, but those trout melts looked awesomely delicious!!!!
Brushing out the shed fur of the family dog, a sign of Spring taking hold, with Winter on the wane!
Is there anything more wholesome than a young lad grooming a dog?
great as always!
Always love seeing Akiva become the center of attention, and if you bag up the fur you have pillow stuffing to start furnishing Arabella! :D
The last time I had trout was when I caught my very first fish. I was about 9. We just pan fried it with a little salt and pepper. Best fish I have ever eaten. I'm 52 now and still want some trout. So that gentleman that brought you the trout is more than welcome to bother me anytime with some trout. He'll just have to come to Texas.
Thank you so much for sharing that story with us!
Enjoyed the show
Looking GOOD 👍
Love that Aaron has no illusions about his new ride. A rare thing.
Excellent stuff bro
Another good video. Looking forward to being at the planking party.
Great people arround yoy feeding tou and support your great work!
We’ve got so much gratitude!
Fairing the deck structure, deck and hull seems like the most daunting tasks ever!
It is!
Great video!
great stuff
SO MUCH FLOOFFF!😁
Great episode. KP is great!
We’re lucky and grateful!
Love the Totoro mug KP!
#A2Acoffeeclub Coffee and A2A are a wonderful start to my Fridays. Thanks, crew, for another fine episode. The content and editing continue to excel.
Heck yeah! Thank you and happy Friday, Bill!
Hey no fair - a teaser ending! Love the flying dog fur!
Jigsaw puzzle comes to mind 😅
Watching Akiva get brushed reminded me of a childhood memory. In the early '70s, my aunt lived with my family temporarily and she had a samoyed husky. She decided to keep the fur and spin it into yarn. I can't recall what she made with that yarn, but I do recall her exclamation of surprise after she washed it... "Ewww! It smells like wet dog!"
Thank you for sharing this memory!
Best part of the day!
Aw shucks, Michael!
207th👍on 209th view! Congratulations on your epic journey!⛵️👍✌️
Great to see you all again, always look forward to my email update on Friday
And we look forward to you being here, Phil! Happy Friday!
Everyone needs a good trout man 👍
Good Friday to you and the Boathouse crew
Haaaaaaappy Friday!!
Akiva is such a good doggo!
Trout recipes? Any trout recipe is brilliant. Getting well into the woodwork prior to planking. Soon guys, soon. Keep up the great work.
Great to watch KP working on the deck centerline. Excited to check out the idea for fairing the deck structure next week.!
Nice work. She seems surprised when pieces fit. And she sounded like she had never used a pattern bit before. I wonder how much woodworking experience she actually had before working on Arabella…
@@spoonlesscorey1628 Some folks approach woodworking with patience, curiosity, and humility, even with a lot of experience. Check out episode 204 for more on that, and for some pictures, in particular, of a large restoration KP worked on.
Great video as alway❤
Thank you very much, Robert!
Great work
Thanks, Jean!
Good morning from S.C.! Amazing how time flies, it seems like just yesterday y'all were pouring the lead keel.
Sean
Glad you’re here for the journey, Sean!
Akiva . . . lovin' it 🤙🏽
He’s a heckin good boy.
When brushing Akiva was mentioned, I laughed and said to myself that KP would need a brushing afterwards themselves! Haven't had a sled dog in years and I still distinctly remember the piles of fluff that accumulate everywhere.
Rye bread! Such good stuff.
Good morning Akiva and Crew ! :-) happy Friday and best wishes for a good Caturday ;-)
Happy happy Friday!
Excelente gente,👌 sigan así
A little of your favorite oil: avocado, extra virgin olive, or sunflower in order of preference in a warm iron skillet. Done when the fish is white. Serve with a long grain wild rice and quinoa mix with a green vegetable::peas, beans, or a fresh salad from the greenhouse. Freshly baked bread with sweet butter and coffee to taste after such a savory meal. Akiva is cooler now without all the down. Our husky made it to 18 years but would only tolerate so much brushing at one time. Love the "not perfect but good enough" work with inventive precision!
Love the trout guy.
❤
K C is having FUN! 😁
@@alexandermenzies9954 because . . . she is learning to go to the source (wood pile) and selecting her soon to be blocking. Then, whittling it all down to fit. And, slowing down her work patter. Also, . . . 🤔 . . . there WAS something else that she was doing . . . hum . . . 🤔 😁 ❤
