We say saloon, some say salon... we say lapstrake, some say clinker... we're not calling the whole thing off. Boat terminology can vary from region to region, sometimes by such a slight difference that it seems to be a spelling mistake, or perhaps that you've heard someone say a word they've read but have never heard out loud. In this case, both are correct. Then we've got all that land versus boat terminology. A boat aboard a bed is a berth, a portioned-out room is a cabin, a couch or seat is a settee, front is forward, back is aft.
    Caulking is caulking though.
Carolyn shows her method for patterning, then cutting, the rolling bevel required for one of the settee supports. The same method is used for cushions, in case your boat is a little further along and you need to know it.
We hadn't mentioned or showed much of the process for the anchor locker bulkhead, which is a partial bulkhead separating out the forward-most part of the forepeak-many commenters were asking, and the truth is that it was fairly close to the shape it needed to be, as it was used for the same purpose in Victoria. In future, we'll be fitting out that area with a fiberglass "tub" to catch mud and moisture after weighing anchor. Stay tuned!
Carolyn says goodbye to Arabella, and shares her thoughts about the time she spent here as a professional boatbuilder in such a public setting. We're thankful for her skills, creativity, expertise, care, and teamwork. We will miss her.
Happy Friday to you! These come out every week. We hope you're subscribed to this channel and to our newsletter. There's so much good stuff coming up, we'd love for you to be here for it.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

@@michaelschweit6771 yeah, men certainly see huge sexism and discrimination in some industries, specifically childcare. Sexism needs to end, full stop. I definitely commend those who fight that battle though, I've worked with women on a shipyard in engineering and first hand seen them face awful sexist shit. I have a lot of respect for those that put up with it. The internet is especially hostile to women and girls too. It all needs to be called for the vile hateful stuff it is.

The internet is a weird and bizarre space. It makes those who present themselves somehow more approachable to viewers. Some people conjure up make believe relationships. They take ownership of projects and presenters. Add to this make believe world the anonymity of the internet and some people mistakenly believe they have the right to make harsh comments about the project and crude advances to presenters. It's a shame some people behave that way. Most people, though, can't help but feel in awe of your talent and tenacity. Carolyn is an inspiration to many here, as are Steve and Alix and everyone else brave enough to share themselves and their talents on RUclips. Thank You.

Couldn’t agree more. I think it is anonymity provided by the internet - the fact that you don’t have to say those to the person’s face and there are no comebacks - that make the comments section a natural home for every coward, emotionally-stunted and delinquent who can type.
I played rugby for many years - too many so my body tells me - and I wasn’t a particularly…….pleasant opposition. The phrase “get your retaliation in first” comes to mind. But I never hit anyone without looking them in the eyes beforehand. I also knew that retribution was going to come my way. However, with only one exception (a Kiwi who spat at me on the field) we all met up in the bar afterwards for the beer. That’s one definition of not being a coward.

The Internet is a very harsh space but for all of those hateful and weird folks out there. • @fredflintstone8048

The same thing happens with actors and their audiences.. In television series these people tend to become extended family to the viewer. Viewers will often take liberties with the actors and sometimes do things like throw drinks at them if they see them on the street. It's called 'propinquity', and there's no way around it. In my opinion youtube content creators need to accept it gracefully because it's the thing that causes people to donate their time and money to the projects. Some of these boat building projects would not enjoy the progress they've had without it. Having interacted with people on the internet for many decades myself there is this level of boldness that comes with the inherent anonymity that causes people to often interact rudely in a way that they would never try face to face and that is unfortune.
One must take the good with the bad, but as I've noticed it seems mostly good for a content creator. The amount of support I see content creators getting from viewers never ceases to amaze me. Kudos to those who show that generosity.

One of the reasons I use my actual face and name in any comment is because I don't like to be anonymous. This touches on what Carolyn shared about remarks that some people make in the comments that cross a line of propriety. Her thoughts were meaningful and touching. Sadly, people may take advantage of the anonymity in order to say things hurtful. Many of us have dealt with this.

What Carolyn said really resonated with me. When I started watching Acorn to Arabella, I was thrilled that, unlike so many other channels, it did not objectify women. When Carolyn came on, I thought, "Please guys, let her shine as a professional person." You did exactly that.
In my novels, my main protagonist, is a strong woman in a male dominated field. Samantha Hunt is a complex and driven professional. I try very hard not to create stereotypical or cardboard characters. Even most of my antagonists are complex. In your channel, you let the work shine and keep relationships professional and cordial. It is something I love about the channel.
Carolyn, I hope you see that, to some extent, you are a now a role model for how to be a professional woman in a male dominated field. Yes I know your one person on a channel with limited reach, but it does matter. I wish you the very best.

You, Carolyn are a delight to watch in the RUclips space. You knocked that out of the park. Specifically anyone wanting to see what it looks like to teach a skill or a concept needs to watch these videos. I hope this experience also turns into you getting many more jobs doing what you desire to do in life. Steve and Alix way to go in getting Carolyn back a second time and leaning into the teaching moments in the way you edit the videos. It was fun to see Alix starting my to come into his own as he is learning so many new skills and also passing on that knowledge as well. I honestly stopped watching the videos consistently for about a year but the last 6 months really made it a must see for me again because of all three of you and what you add to the channel. I know that RUclips is and should be secondary to building a boat but you guys pull it off very well.

Carolyn, to sum it up in a simple two word phrase……You ROCK!! You’ve added a unique, third dimension to this amazing project with your exceptional ability to teach and educate we viewers
who are fascinated but not experienced in the arcane, black magic of boat building. For what it’s worth, do your best to block out those haters and their useless comments……they’re simply jealous of your abilities and shaken by your future potential. Reconnect with your family because in the grand scheme, that’s the really important stuff. Hopefully we’ll see you back on the project at some point! Fair winds and following seas.

It is a wonder, how to make a cabin out of a weirdly shaped interior space. Its like some kind of super art form. Also, the art of maintaining consistency between the several living spaces even as they are worked on by different artisans solving different problems in different shaped areas. This boat should be a traveling exhibit of the New York Museum of Modern Art. That way, you will have to come to Chicago and I can come and visit. I'll bring pizza and beef sandwiches.

Great speech at the end. Seriously. I agree that there is too much of that behavior on the internet. I have no answer, I'm afraid, just a shared concern. I keep hoping that people will grow up and realize that the best thing you can do for another human being is offer unconditional support and encouragement, especial when they are too afraid to put themselves out there and see what it is like for themselves. My very best wishes in your future. You have earned the respect and certainly deserve it. Stand tall Carolyn and tell them to piss off :)

    • @MikeAG333
      @MikeAG333 3 года назад +4

Not always ("negative comments made by those without ability...."). Personally, I have criticised a number of things on this project recently, and I have way more experience than any of the people involved in A2A. It is absolutely basic stuff, for instance, not to have sapwood in any project you ever do, (other than with say yew or walnut), and most shots of Arabella have sapwood in them somewhere. Those are the first parts of the boat which will rot. That is an informed negative comment, and I wished such knowledge was taken seriously by A2A, and alterations made to their timber selection, because ultimately I wish the project well.
