Working Towards the Galley & Alix Update - Episode 183 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • Oh what a tangled web we weave! Anyone will tell you about the compromises in nearly all liveaboard choices, and to be sure at least a vast majority of cubic inches are considered and cogitated upon, this week's episode takes a hard 90-degree turn into an area of the boat we thought we'd be able to leave for another few weeks.
    That sends us on a flashback to a couple of months ago, when Steve and Carolyn went to town on some locust for an important piece of the galley that we've kept off to the side for some time. We do plenty of work that we don't show in these videos in between the half-week of sanding this and that or while we wait for multiple coats of sealer, varnish, primer, or paint.
    Alix gives us an update at the top of the episode-he'll be setting up his own workshop, looking after his dad at home, and hopes to take on Arabella projects that he can work on there.

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    Alix back and the old intro, I'm getting a bit nostalgic. Feels like yesterday that there was nothing but a hole in the ground, getting readied for a keel to be poured in it. You've come a long way since then and I feel privileged to be able to watch this beautiful project progress. You are my weekly dose of dopamine.

    Note: never place a head facing fore and aft. Always place a head facing port or starboard because in a heavy seaway it is much harder to stay on said head if the boat is pitching port to starboard or reverse. It is always easier to maintain balance if you can brace yourself port to starboard because the boat pitches most violently that way rather than bow to stern. I have crossed the Atlantic three times and the Pacific five times in stormy seas. You are going to have more violent motion across the hull than lengthwise. Just a tip from a 69 year old sailor. I have been on boats with both setups, in my experience it is always easier to stay seated when the head is port to starboard than bow to stern.

      Imagine sitting on the toilet with the boat heeled 30 degrees on either tack. While this type of heel makes doing your business difficult with the toilet facing the center of the boat, it'll be almost impossible to get the job done with the toilet located fore and aft as shown in the video.

    I don't like boats, I don't like sailing, and I don't like working with wood. But Fridays are special and I love watching craftspeople work and use their skills. Cant wait until the channel starts to follow your adventures on the high seas. The last series that intrigued me was the Jessica Watson circumnavigation of the world. Strange that I appreciate something that isn't my thing but, admire effort and craftsmanship.

      If you enjoy Sailing stories, have a look at Sailing Uma. An odd young couple bought an old 70's 32 foot lump. They made a marvelous all electric high tech ship out of it. Their journey started 7 years ago, sailing the world. They just got to the northest town on Danemark, way past the Artic circle. Amazing syories !

      Well I love both wood sailboats and Sailing, and have had the pleasure of doing some of what they are doing on my on sailboat that was from the 1920's. However we do get to share watching someone presenting their craftsmanship. If you have not watched Leo's channel rebuilding Tally Ho. Check it out, you will not be disappointed.

    That is so funny. My son has just purchased his first bare land and we have been discussing the importance of building the shop first since everything to come flows from an organized shop space. Build your shop/barn first and live in it while you build your future. Just say no to foolish unnecessary debt! That is what will set you free.

    I think you need to consider the way the toilet faces. Much of the sailing is done at an angle, and you'd be leaning sideways and trying not to fall off! But turn the toilet through 90 deg to face across the boat and the you're either leaning back, or forward and bracing with your feet. Much more satisfactory!

      Whoa! Let them finish the boat and get married first! Too many hazards to have little ones in the mix. You put down your hammer, turn to grab more nails and go back to a hammer that is now missing. I spend more than eight hours a day with a two year old and nothing is sacred. Everything now becomes theirs. And nothing is ever where you put it last. It makes any chore or job take longer than you planned. But then again teaching your kids how to use all those tools early gives them a jump on their schooling.

As a sailor and someone who has years working on boats, I love to see your input and help on this project, but know this; If you were to move on from this project right now, you have so much to be proud of! With several cabinets on board, finding things in a hurry, especially if someone else stowed the items, usually involved digging through 3 or 4 areas before finding what was needed. I found a bunch of old brass 'card catalog tag frames'. Two or three on each cabinet door allowed an identifying tag to be inserted with the important items listed, Big first aid kit, bung plugs, hose clamps and spare drive belts (the adjustable length "keyhole" type)... Now, even guests could find emergency supplies when needed. And the polished brass looked like original equipment...

  • @JeffKnoxAZ

    Build that head with cardboard walls around your toilet in the house, to learn how it really works. I think you'll find that more room is required for dropping and retrieving your drawers.

    • @diogeneskoolaid8437
      @diogeneskoolaid8437 2 года назад +8

      I was going to say the same thing. make sure to really test all "real world" movements when you're in the head. if you've ever tried to use an airplane bathroom you'll know exactly how difficult not enough room is.

    • @davidantill6949
      @davidantill6949 2 года назад +4

      Yeah managing motions under motion can be a thing. You need room enough to move and deal with your drawers yet an ability to wedge yourself in when a high sea is running. Hand holds for the performance when either standing or seated come in very handy.

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella 2 года назад +3

      And make sure you do it with multiple layers of cold weather gear and then foulweather gear on top of that. For authenticity, have the clothing wet, and yourself cold. Finally, allow for the movement and compromised balance in stormy sea conditions.

    Having lived aboard a motorsailor with a tiny head for many years I can assure you more room is required for your head. Ours was tiny and really wish it had been larger. Can’t really shower if you can’t raise your arms. We turned our crapper on a diagonal which gave more leg room and actually made it easier to brace oneself in a seaway and easier to “land and launch” from the seat. Being tightly closed in during one’s quality time is really quite uncomfortable, and we all want comfort while processing our thoughts and meals. As for the wood stove maybe a copper pan? Would look nice with the ports and port lights. Keep on truckin folks.

    Hi Steve & gang, I own a vintage Airstream restoration shop in Upstate NY. When we are doing custom interiors, we build full scale mock-ups using luan, firing strips & sheetrock screws. This saves on a lot of potential build mistakes. I worked in the Industrial Design industry for 24 years & we always did mock -ups. Its amazing how the design will evolve after seeing & moving around inside it. Its well worth the extra time spent, plus its a great motivator, seeing what it'll look like in the end. PS love the vids : )

    Alix is the soul and heart of this project. It may be the case, as far as I have gathered from watching this channel from its initiation, that Steve and Alix have steadily grown apart, perhaps due to the uneven and unjust distribution of wealth and control. Some time ago, Steve had argued that since he 'owns all the property, all the lumber, shop and other resources, that it only makes sense that he should own the entire boat'. (paraphrasing from a video from quite some time ago). I'd argue that it is the other way around -- owning acres of land, a house, endless resources, machines and infrastructure should only warrant such a privileged person to share this creation, with such a brother. I am very much looking forward to the independent channel with Alix as the star of the show. I am willing to take flak from the community. (I do hope I am wrong on this one -- just spilling my gut feeling here)

      Hi! Annie B here. I think that would be my take too, if I didn’t know these people and how it all started. Steve invited his friend, for personal reasons, to come live and work with him on a project he’d have done with or without video documentation or help. People don’t grow apart always for any reason other than time, as change is inevitable. As for privilege, Steve didn’t pick where he was born, but as far as I’ve been able to tell, he knows the treasure he’s surrounded by (wood, talented friends, a secure place to live) and has applied it well. He works hard, hires friends, is thankful for help, and shows gratitude. We don’t get personal on this channel because, well, it’s not Our Way. Suffice to say that I understand your take, but respectfully must simply say that your speculation is off, and I know it comes from a place of care. Thanks so much for watching.

    Alix, great to see you back, and nice to hear of your future plans as Arabella moves into a different phase and how you will transition into a different role as you build your life for the future, and Steve continues focusing on his future. It appears as though your paths are heading in different directions as life happens and decisions have to be made as to how one wants to live their life. Best wishes to you and your future endeavors as you expand upon your skills!

    A couple of things about wood stoves: if you want to limit the amount of steel around the stove (it's not nice to look at) a glass panel above a nice wood floor is ideal. It's more insulating, too. For the draft, you can buy an electric fan or a wind-driven one for the top of the stovepipe. The cabin is relatively small, and smoke will fill it up in no time if the wind blows wrong.
    Good to see Alix back!
