House Top Interior, Fairing and Painting-Episode 172-Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • A big part of strip-built construction isn't the glue-up itself, which is a satisfyingly quick process, but is the fairing and finishing process that comes after. Steve and volunteer Grant (thanks again, Grant!) fill large imperfections and voids in the seams of the glued strips with structural epoxy, then follow up that work with planing, sanding, and skim-coating with fairing filler.
With the interior surface faired, it's time for a layer of epoxy primer... the same hard-wearing, two-part TotalProtect that went on the mizzen mast a couple months ago. And there's another first this week: The first peek at a painted surface inside Arabella, color and all.
Luckily, Steve notices a big problem with one of the trees that anchors the boat house before its able to cause any damage to Grandpa Dave's farm implements or to the boat house itself. Next week we'll see that tree come down, and we hope you're here for it. We hope you enjoyed this episode, and we're grateful you're with us on this journey.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Your Grandfather reminds me of my father's mother. She could do ANYTHING. She and my grandfather built their first house themselves. She could wire, plumb, construct, whatever needed doing. A tip I learned from a pro painter, paint ceilings with flat finish paint. Makes any imperfections far less visible. The interior sides of the house are kind of ceiling and will reflect a lot of light due to the port holes. Something to consider.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  3 года назад +5

Yes, you e received a good tip for land applications for sure. Flat finishes in a boat can be tough… the texture is a little harder to clean/wipe and is a little less hard wearing. But shiny surfaces on an interior can also be a little harsh (not just for showing imperfections). Somewhere in the middle is just about right. Color plays into this too… for example, it’s widely known that black, flat paint on topsides is the most forgiving, whereas shiny black finish on topsides will show every flaw. When you see a good job on shiny, dark topsides, a professional did it for sure!

I am going to make a suggestion Steve, painting is finish work I would consider saving the final coat until you are done with the hundreds of other things that are going to scratch, ding, scuff, stain ,basically just ruin your finish coat are completed. You don't want to have to worry about protecting finishes at this stage, for example when you cut out the port holes that will leave more paint work etc. It's also what you are going to be looking at for the rest of the time you will be on Arabella. A smart person learns from his mistakes a wise person learns from others, every job I do there is always touch up the amount is dependent on how long the finish has been susceptible to damage, not trying to rag on you guys I just don't like to flush the toilet twice,(unless its a monster :o).

Maple and Birch seemed to stay white. Harder to get the sanding marks out, but worth the work in my opinion. Every wood I’ve worked with seemed to get more amber with spar varnish. Mahogany stayed red but got darker with age. Here on the West Coast we sure a lot of Fir as it is a beautiful option that turns a rich dark red with age. Woods colors all look great 👍.

Good to see Grandpa featuring a bit more... definitely adds something to the videos... (IMHO)

I really like the texture of a roller brush finish. Save a lot of work not having to sand it and it would look better too.

Keep up the solid work, can highly recommend the texture finish as it's easy to replicate when doing touchups later down the track.

    Hi steve, Alix and Akiva
I just thought I´d share a thought of my own. I have done a wooden laminate and fiberglassed it a few times. Not an expert by far, but here´s what i found.
The fiberglass does not change shape due to moisture but wood does. My limited experience tells me that over the seasonal changes i moisture levels in the air, the wood will expand and contract, the glass will not. This has caused my small projects to warp madly. Worst case was a 1m model hull for a landing craft that i fiberglassed on the outside to keep the wood protected from the seawater. My advice would be to fiberglass both the inside and the outside, or none of the sides.

I like the gray as well, but it will be darker in the cabin than if he had gone with white. The plus, of course, is that it won't show every hand print as quickly as a pure white would have. Boys will be boys, after all, and those walls will be touched, so this is likely the smarter option.

It's kind of like with painted decks, or anything that will have, potentially, a lot of light bouncing in and around it. White could be a little glaring, but the blue is cheerful enough and bright enough to take that edge off.

    Nice colour choice.
We had different colour themed rooms in the previous house - green, blue, purple. and we used a similar very pale grey on the trip - it picked up the complimentary colours of the room - purple for the green room, green for the purple room, yellow for the blue...

Thinking it might not have enough drying time but bet that maple has some beautiful burl and figuring that would make for some great brightwork accents in the boat.

sailboats (all boats for that matter) lean a lot and are sort of self-bailing as far as portlights are concerned, so the water problem is minimal. in fact the windward side of sailboat under sail will usually create enough of an angle to collect water no matter what.

I've been watch from the beginning and I have loved the whole build and it has been a journey, thank you for this. I was wondering if you are going to refinish all the port lights and if you do are you going to show the process as this is something I would like to see.

One of the issues with the Westsail 32 is the port lights holding water. People have shimmed the port lights so they are flush. Others have filled the bottom to displace the water collection. I use the glued in lantern wick trick
