    My father always taught me to take my time and do things the right way, the best I could. I absolutely love how you take your time with this boat, and the results never disappoint. Love the color scheme, but more than that, it’s obvious that this boat is being very-well constructed and should hold up very well over time. My hats off to you sir! Looking forward to eventually seeing you launch her, but that’s a ways off yet I think. Keep taking your time with her, not skipping any steps.

    Small tip when doing boot stripe or top-to-bottom transition. After taping, but before painting the stripe color, paint the tape seam with the base color. This really seals the tape edge and the subsequent stripe paint wont seep underneath the tape at seams. Makes it real sharp. Beautiful color scheme!

      Hi SV, This is a good trick I've used often. I learned it when I was a museum preparator early in my career. This was before blue painters tape and bleed resistant tape. It does work great. However,
      as I said in the video I taped only for insurance of being startled or getting a unexpected case of the jitters. I painted right up to the tape and just to the scribe line. I was therefore not worried about paint bleed.
      Great tip though for those using only the tape line to define the waterline/boot stripe.( mostly done on fiberglass boats where scribing isn't an option)
      Thanks for your comment and for watching!
      Cheers

Brought back very warm memories. Beautiful boat. Can hardly wait to see the ballast keep get bolted and the fit out of the interior. Take care, stay well and have a great up coming week.

    You can wet the wood before painting and very gently sand it with ar least 180 grid after drying to avoid the wood fibres raising. Learned the technique from veneering but it works well in all painting applications

    Paint store employee here. I strongly recommend against punching holes in the rim of the can. They can spill paint, which can make a mess, but more importantly they can let air in and will ruin your paint. I've had several customers come in with paint only a few months old that ruined.
    I can't argue against the nostalgia of remembering your dad though. 😊

    Bob, your attention to detail continues to amaze! I couldn’t help but wonder as you started with the primer, if maybe your thoughts were somewhat bittersweet. I mean, as you covered those lovely planks you had to realize that you would likely never again see you boat at that stage. It just seems such a difference and a milestone . And to now be so close to flipping her! Flipping mine was clearly the biggest moment for me short of the first sea trial. She looks great and I am so happy and excited for you. Btw, it sounds like you pronounce ablative ("Ablation is removal or destruction of material from an object by vaporization, chipping, or other erosive processes.") as abative ("The abative effect: A new term to describe the action of antecedents that reduce operant responding"). Maybe there's a really discrete l there?

Did you prime the inside of the centerboard trunk or will that occur later? Never would have thought to use the metal primer. Bob - In one of your videos, you talked about making the paint job "perfectly perfect," so that it would look right on an old design like a Herreshoff sailboat. I am currently restoring a 1956 Lightning, and hope to do something like a 1950s paint job. I am thinking that, like your paint job, mine will need to be imperfect to be perfect for my boat. I have been trying to find the video where you discussed this idea, but haven't had any luck. Could you direct me to the correct video? And, if there are other resources that would help me understand how to proceed, I would love to learn of them. Thanks, Mike Seibert

    I don't understand that punching the rim of the paint tin thing. Doesn't that create a passage for air into the tin after you replace the lid which will serve to cure the paint and it won't keep in the tin?

    • @sunny71169
      @sunny71169 4 года назад +2

      No. The rim is punctured in the mortise of the can rim. The tenon that is formed on the paint lid mates with the mortise preventing air from entering the can and preventing the paint from drying out.

  • @spacemansabs
    @spacemansabs 2 года назад

    All wood will raise their grain if you wet them. This poses the biggest issue after you've put epoxy or paint on the boat, but if you wet it before you apply the finish, and sand the raised grain then, (do it twice just in case) then it won't raise again when you apply your stain/paint/epoxy. I would say this is especially important with epoxy, since it's much harder to sand once it's cured.
