The First Bulkhead - Episode 173 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • The pesky, dangerous maple that serves as an anchor for the boathouse comes down in this episode, and Steve (who has worked in the past as an arborist, and of course, felled the trees for the lumber in Arabella) goes through a couple of specifics about how to safely drop large limbs from a tree, making them do what you want them to do.
    Then we're back on Arabella, using joggle sticks to create a pattern for the first bulkhead, which will also be the only one to create separate interior space in the boat. This somewhat private arrangement in the forepeak calls for a door, and it's time to hit the inventory of reclaimed frame and panel mahogany pieces that were salvaged from Victoria to see if anything suits the purpose.
    Thanks so much for watching, hope you enjoyed this one! It's especially important to join our newsletter, we're going to be launching a few short-run, limited availability things from Arabella herself that will be offered to the newsletter subscribers first.

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    Consider having the forcasle door open into the forcasle and not into the gally salon area. If you want to leave it open for airflow but not have it impede everyday life, you may appreciate having it out of the way.

    • @lbh002
      @lbh002 2 года назад +11

      I had just composed a similar thought. I'll leave it here: Maybe have the bifold door hinge along the midship, but into the forepeak area instead of into the salon. Older homes had bedroom doors hinged mid wall versus in the corner. Thus, when the door was open it partly screened the room. This gave you both some privacy while allowing ventilation.

    • @DrRusty5
      @DrRusty5 2 года назад +2

      That was also my first thought for the bifold door

      I got old and need air conditioning. But the young use a blower on the fore hatch and do like you said about blowing through. Out the aft end, cockpit or something.

    • @boooshes
      @boooshes 2 года назад +4

      One challenge with that approach is that most of the forepeak is filled with a bunk and there is often no place to swing a door. The salon is usually open to the floor.

    I had a shipwright (and eventually friend and fellow fisherman) that I first met when he did planking work on our 58' seiner in AK. I was amazed at his cutting of the boards, hammering the caulking between the planks, and finally mortaring, and took a lot of photos in those days of him working. We later got to be crew together and talked about caulking work, and one of the most amazing things he told me is that you must have a firm but light/practiced hand, as corking planks unevenly can cumulatively skew a boat's hull shape. (Little ounces of hammer equal tons of pressure over so many seams). He taught me how to replace and cut planks for repairs. I like your joggle sticks, Nice. We used a batten and a compass. Came out perfect every time. I got really good at fitting "things" into weird spaces on boats. Hull planks, other structural metal, and wood. Nothing ever level, nothing ever square. When I learned this, I hadn't done too much carpentry to that point. Funny thing, when I came back on land and tried to build stuff with squares and such, I had no idea what I was doing and failed all the time.
    Thank you so much for sharing this super wonderful build with us. I cannot wait to see it on the water!!!

    1. Grandpa is a gem! Tell him we say, "Hi!"
    2. I like your choice of door, I assume you will have berths both port and starboard aft of the bulkhead. One option is have the door hinged on starboard and then have a latch to secure it to the berth when open. That will give you more room around the table.
    3. You need to get Robin into more videos.

    Dear Steve
    I love what you guys are doing and I admire the endeavour and your tenacity. That said you need to get some sea miles under your belts. When you are at sea it's all about seamanship. This is something you learn in the face of mother nature. At the height of a storm you will ask yourself "What the f.... possessed me to put myself in this situation?" The wood burning stove is just a bad idea for so many reasons. A diesel stove and big roto molded diesel tanks down in the bilges is the way to go. Water makers are a modern miracle and so are modern batteries paired to oversized alternators. I grew up on, and have owned, many boats including wooden boats. All of these items will lower your center of gravity if placed properly. Keep the weight out of the ends and in the middle as much as you can. A yacht should be beautiful and functional. I am no interior designer but if you pair oak with bits and pieces of "spiritual" mahogany from Victoria you will end up with a dogs dinner! Make sure your berth is really comfortable for two. No compromises! If you have to shrink the main salon then do it. Make sure you have comfortable berths for another couple. Have you thought about a dodger? Screw the wooden dinghy; get an inflatable. A dodger is much more important to wellbeing and therefore safety. The same thing can be said of an inflatable. I recall you guys saying that your ideal is high latitude sailing. Although very different in many respects to your own project I think you would find much in common, philosophically, with Skip Novak.
    I hope this does not come across as overly strident but I think you are at a point where you need to weigh up pragmatism against romanticism.
    Still love you guys

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  2 года назад

      Everyone learns somewhere, Steve wants to learn on his boat. He’ll get his sea miles on Arabella. It’s kinda easy to grasp… he’d be on some boat learning if he went to get sea miles and learn seamanship. Friends will come to help run the boat for near coastal cruising for that.
      As for everything else, thanks for watching. Different courses for different horses, and may we all enjoy the boats we have.

    Easily the most interesting episode since the hull was completed. I especially liked the emergency felling of the Big Tree and the modeling of the first bulkhead. I would think of using the bi-fold door on the frontside of the bulkhead hinged on the starboard side so that it swings into the hull ahead of the bulkhead.When open it would take the very least useable space and when closed the fore deck would take on water tightness. ALL-A- TAUT-O

    Steve, what about the door bi-folding into the fore-bunk against the starboard wall? While open it might block a closet or something, but once in the fore-cabin it can be closed to access the closet or whatever is behind the door. Plus, it would not be blocking anything in the galley/main cabin area. A couple of magnetic catches could hold it open and to itself when open, and even closed if strong rare-earth magnets are utilized. And, that would reduce any latches sticking out to catch on skin or clothing. I'm guessing the trim around the edges of the bulkhead will close any gaps?
    Should look real nice in an oil, varnish, or paint finish when done. (Depending on trim finish and paint color, of course.)
    Coming along quite nicely. Can't wait to see Caroline's return in the next episode, and the starting of the sealing of the bilge. I know she has more experience than you or I do, but that oakum sure looked like it is going in quite loose in the preview footage, I guess we'll see if the tar seeps past it later. I'm really looking forward to watching those steps.

    I like the choice of double door, It might be an idea to take a quarter inch off each side of each door. Which would gain some extra space.

    Interesting method of sizing the bulkhead, we used to do it from the lofting drawing. Nice to see Victoria living on, she was a treasure trove!

    Stephen, you should get yourself a set of Jummar Ascenders. Put a sling ladder on the lower one and your saddle on the upper one. It makes climbing a rope/ledge that much easier since you use your legs for climbing the ladder and not your arms.

      Okay, I spoke too soon and see that you have them. I'll hush-up my mug (if you fill up my jug with that good ol' mountain dew).

    When moving the bulkhead up the stairs I noticed Steve was smart and allowed Grandpa to take most of the weight going up. 😁 Good on ya Grandpa 👍

    I remember watching as Victoria was being deconstructed and wondering how or if you’d remember where all the parts came from. It’s really interesting to watch now as you begin the process of constructing the interior spaces of Arabella.

    Very smooth smart work on the tree Steve! Really enjoy your journey with the creation of Arabella, never ever miss an episode. It would be a fistfight to decide which build is more enjoyable, Arabella or Tally Ho, both have their own unique vibe. Cheers!
