Installing the Lodging Knees - Episode 144 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • We are nearing the end of the knees! It's amazing the difference that can be seen as these all start to go in. Not only to the rigidity of the structure but also at how the space seems so much different inside.
    Knees keep the hull from wracking while sailing. They tie many parts of the structure together so that they work together. This can mean they can sometimes be a bit challenging to fit and secure in place. After Steve finishes the knees, he gets a very well deserved holiday break with Robin while Alix fits them in Arabella.

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    You folks brighten my world, through some dark days. Your character and determination inspire and encourage. The world is a better place with y'all in it: bonus for letting us share a snippet portion of your lives.
    Alex, those are some great joins. Woodworking is as much perseverance as it is talent. Kudos.
    When y'all are old and gray you will be able to look back on this project and perhaps realize the contribution that you have made to the world through your sweat and headaches

    For future reference, available at a Home Depot, Lowes, and most quality Electrical suppliers are extra long drill bits. Electricians use them for drilling from a switch location up or down through the top or bottom plates to run new wires. They are VERY affordable. Same as the drill bit you were using, it grabs the wood and you have to drill then back off repeatedly. But these drill bits would allow for deep drilling from only one side.
    Love what you folks are doing! It is a real education for this inlander to see such a craft go together from raw wood to finished ship!

      I've not canoed in ice, but have canoed in Minnesota's Boundary Waters when the air temp was in the 40's. After a portage, my bud in a 2nd canoe (3 guys in 2 canoes) went over up to his chest. He said it was cold but he didn't want to change into his one set of dry clothes as who knows if it would happen again and we had to go through another portage and some minimal rapids further on. Miles further, we finally got to our camping site and put up our tents in the rain to then discover that one of the dry bags containing sleeping bags had a hole in it. It was not a comfortable night. But sitting on the ground the next morning, my back to a tree, with clouds racing above the whipping branches of white pine and birch was also an experience I'll not forget.

    Love the grain on the knee Steve held. Absolutely beautiful and I loved watching every step of how it came to be, originating from a mangled root. I can see why he is so proud of it and the other knees. That took a gargantuan amount of work--to pull out of the ground, clean it, figure out to fit it in with the beams and other knees, cut it up and attach them with bolts and drifts--all of that. And I loved the VISION that few people would have. I can just imagine Steve's first reading a book or article or watching a video of someone doing that and realizing how the roots of those large oak trees could be used to make something so beautiful, unique and functional. And saying to Alix, "hey look at this idea". Way to go, guys! You will indeed enjoy looking at those knees when laying in your bunks.

      Never understood the bell from an end-user point of view. If I wanted to watch a show when it comes out, I might as well go back to watching commercial TV.
      Instead it's really nice to relax at the end of a day/weekend, pull up the subscriptions tab and 'see what is on' that I can then watch my way through. The rest of the time I can't watch videos, so being told new ones come out is just frustrating. "Look! Here is this thing you can't watch until later!"..
      The only reason everyone pushes it must be because of some algorithm thing, otherwise it just seems a step backwards for all but livestreams.

    Next time you want to extend a drill, instead of butt welding the extension rod onto the drill, drill a hole in the end of the drill shank using a centre drill in the lathe to make sure it is concentric before opening up that hole to the correct size for the extension rod. (Good quality drills have a soft shank that should be drillable). You can then weld it with the confidence that the rod is concentric. I have even used Loctite 601 to glue an extension rod in place with a good deal of success.

    • @woodsmn8047
      @woodsmn8047 3 года назад +3

      or if you have a lathe you could friction weld them and get a perfect job of it

    • @rcdogmanduh4440

    • @OuchMySpleen
      @OuchMySpleen 3 года назад +2

      Why not just spend the $20 and get an extension? That auger bit is made to to be chucked into an extension, and once you are that deep accuracy shouldnt be an issue.

    • @OuchMySpleen
      @OuchMySpleen 3 года назад +4

      Well I guess he did say he didn't want to wait on a bit, so maybe their local big box stores is further away than mine. As long as the job gets done, it doesn't matter.

    • @ericmorriscompany9648
      @ericmorriscompany9648 3 года назад

      An extension would work because the socket end of the extension is larger than the drill diameter and it will not pass through the hole. If you chuck the drill backwards in the tail stock and the extension in the chuck you have the two parts concentric. And as you rotate them to weld around the joint they remain concentric.

    I've never questioned the how or why Steve and Alex build their boat. But for too long I've held my tongue about their lack of shop tidiness and the fire hazard it represents. I was always taught from an early age to clean the shop at the end of the day's work. Wood shavings and especially sawdust are extremely flammable, not to mention the danger from slipping and tripping over debris left on the floor. Sweep up those shavings and sawdust and spread them out in the wood lot! Your mothers don't work there so clean up after yourselves! Keep your work tables neat as you work, less then an hour a day to clean up and put your tools away will go a long way to making your work area safer plus set a good example for your viewers. Thank You, (rants over).

    Excellent video. I'm wondering something... Will you do a time-lapse video of the entire boat build when the time comes? Alex, I love your welding skills. Tedious small welds have to be hard to do. Steve, I loved your canoeing experience. The whole video gave me a better glimpse into your lives. Happy New Year to you both. Thank you for the excellent videos. By the way, your soundtracks are awesome too.

      We've been enjoying the ability to fold in a little bit of backwoods travel into the recent videos. When the boat's complete, it'll be more of that, of course.
      We haven't been taking time laps of all of the stages of building, however, there's plenty to speed up to show very quick progress over the years. Alix is putting together plans for a documentary. Thanks for the kind words and for watching.

      @@AcornToArabella You guys are doing such nice work - and sharing it in such a positive manner, I hope you know you have our very best wishes from way out here on Oahu. Long time sailor, have cast a couple keels and had that thought when I saw a complex cage assembly ( that I just had fabricated at significant expense) set in the mold for the bulb we built. " I very well might be the last person who ever sees this thing that I spent all that money on...." Ah. Ya Gotta love it

    Sorry to hear about your winter camping trip falling through. We haven't had a winter in Upstate New York in five-years. And if it does snow, it only snows at night. What good is that for watching snow fall? Watching snow fell? These are indeed (as you said) "the times we live in."

    In case you have any additional challenges needing a long drill bit, Southwire makes some extendable bits that you can find on the shelf at Lowes...in the electrical supply isle. Installers use them to fish down through walls to drill through purlins when running wire--electric, cable, phone, etc. You can link the shafts together to get 50+ inches of length, and the bit screws onto the end. Dunno what size bits they have, in terms of hole size, or if that will work for you, but I've used them for running wire and they're a versatile alternative to having a solid shaft bit.

    • @10947792
      @10947792 3 года назад

      The box stores also carry 48” and 60” inch bits for electrical work.....no linking required!except to add an extension if needed. They come in a variety of sizes.

    Next time you’ve got a nut you need to lock in place use Loctite 290. I’m pretty sure it’ll work on bronze and to break it loose you’d have to heat it, so it should work perfectly on the nuts you can’t put a tool on.

    So excellent! Although I am European and live in Europe now, I was fortunate enough to grow up in the US and for a brief time live in the canadian northwest, and I love it soooo much, the entire pacific northwest is just amazing and I would have gladly made it my home for my children to thrive among great people and awe-inspiring landscape. That being said I cannot complain about my lot in life, I am forever grateful to have experienced it firsthand and thankful for the blessings we recieve here everyday, in particular a healthy family, which we pray will continue to be.
    I agree wholeheartedly with Alix, the way we treat those around us creates the environment we project, we should strive to make it a good one, based on mutual respect.
    Thank you guys as always for the awesome content!!!!!

    Long time ago, I put a eighth inch by twelve inch drill in a drill press. It made about one and a half rotations, broke at the chuck, and stuck like a spear, in a concrete block wall. Just a random memory from .. 1977 iirc . Hay, "Keep a fire burning in your eyes, pay attention to the open skies, you never know what will be coming down" (Jackson Brown -1974)
    "Keep a fire for the human race
    Let your prayers go drifting into space
    You never know what will be coming down
    Perhaps a better world is drawing near
    Just as easily it could all disappear
    Along with whatever meaning you might have found
    Don't let the uncertainty turn you around
    (The world keeps turning around and around)
    Go on and make a joyful sound"
