Half Laps and Mast Blocking - Episode 147 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 янв 2021
- We are on the last steps of putting together the sill for the house top and the blocking for the mizzen mast. Alix needs to cut the half laps in the corners of the sill to get them to fit just right. Once that is done, we can paint them and screw them in place. Steve on the other hand, is installing some of the last deck framing as well as making the blocking for the mizzen mast.
With these last things in place, we can then move on to doing a mock up of the house top and the cockpit. This will be really exciting as it will really show the space we have to work with inside of Arabella.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I demand the return of Akiva's little howl in the intro! >:(
But it's honestly a step up from the old one. really beautiful.
Yes, I was waiting for it... but actually I love this new one... and we got lots of howls in this episode.
Yep, I was waiting for the howl too
I miss it as well!
That little howl is what made me typically skip the old intro. It's totally fake and unnecessary, much like the whinny that audio editors like to put in films every time you see a horse, or the moo every time you see a cow. For my tastes, the new intro is *much* better and I'll sit through it ... as long as there's no howl. I'll listen for his vocalizations during the video when they occur naturally.
@@ByrdMann2010 Nag nag nag. Relax, man. LOL !
I'm continually blown away at how beautiful the wooden knees look upon install.
Yeah those grown knees (both the "ancient" ones Victoria contributed as well as those they sweated themselves from roots) make a very big difference.
Whoever is doing the Editing and Final Cuts, Great Job.
Ben, Great work.
That’s Ben Fundis
@@_blento_2637 Well, Ben does the editing but he doesn't set up the cameras. So that's not on him. I would think that since Alix is back he is doing most of the camera work. Maybe that's why it got "brighter" - more his kind of style. They also seem to have snow there which lights up a lot of what normally would have been in the shadows.
@@_blento_2637 That happens sometimes when you're recording yourself and can't redo the shot! The editor isn't placing the cameras.
@@AcornToArabella I'd personally vote for you to continue putting your best efforts into smart details and great workmanship rather than documenting it for us!
Like the new intro.
same here
Thanks!
Appreciated it too!
Great job guys. Certainly more complex and exacting than putting up a 2x6 stud wall. The choreography of the build is simply amazing. Both Steve and Alix are doing their own thing and yet complementing each other. Beautiful example of teamwork.
Like the new opening sequence, very nice.
It was so worth it to rebuild that boatshed cover!
It was nice that you finally let that poor puppy in to protect you from the mice and squirrels.
a big win being able to keel-step the mizzen
Love the new intro especially the sepia tone profile of Arabella. Thank you all for making my Friday great.
Yesterday I built a 1' plywood riser to go under the washer and drier so my wife would not have to bend over so far when she did the wash. Couple of pieces of pine 2x6, some brackets and some plywood. I'm such an amateur. But all the time, in my mind, I was dreaming I was these guys building a beautiful ship out of solid rock-hard oak. A man needs a fantasy. :)
Gentlemen and Helpers, I have binge watched your journey over the last few days. I have never commented on a channel I watch and I hope this is the correct way to comment? I am hard to impress with woodwork (I am a Windsor Chair Maker) but I am very impressed with the whole deal. Excellent video work and great commentary to keeping me glued to the journey. I am also impressed with the fact that you both have persevered through all your trials and tribulations. Please due keep it coming and I can't wait to see the completion and the christening. I do hope that you do invite people to that and if possible I will come. Keep up the good work!!
You know you’ve been with this journey along time, when you know this is their third new opening credits.🇬🇧🇦🇺😀
Thanks for coming along with us!!
Gradually Alix is becoming an accomplished shipwright. He works slowly but very accurately. At the end of the journey he will have mastered one of the eldest trades in the world
These guys are super awesome!
I get such a surge of jealousy .. but then I just get inspired to lift my game.
That was a good story. Well done editor.
Really nice filming, enjoying your build
I love how you meticulously shape and fit each piece of wood, so fun to watch.
Love the running commentary from Akiva.
She’s starting to look like a living thing taking shape. So organic.
The precision is mesmerizing. Nice work! 👍👍
winter projects are the best type of projects
You have made my bucket list: I'm an old guy with health issues, and one item on my bucket list is to see Arabella finished and on the water. (Don't rush, please)
Wayne, we're hoping you're here for launch for sure, and to see all kinds of adventures as well. Stay in touch! Be well!
Lovely amber intro. Nice episode - you can't imagine how these videos cheer and entertain the housebound. Just keep building and sharing - take your time - the epidemic is raging out there. You know, perhaps Akiva is just pining for the sea!
So glad to hear we're creating that kind of happiness, Cliff. Thanks for watching.
A keel stepped mast is definitely safer, having had a shroud failure myself and the mast stayed up, a deck stepped mast would have fallen. Also a smaller cockpit has advantages in that if you get a ‘greeny’ over the stern which fills the cockpit there is less weight of water and it drains quicker. You have a great advantage in being able to design efficient cockpit drains from the get go, the bigger the better.
+1. Cockpit drains on every corner at least big enough for a tuna! A lot of boats have a companionway that comes up in the cockpit and even with its bottom. I call that a design mistake because it means if the companionway is open that water gets into your cabin. People don't understand that a big wave can come along any time, even in relatively calm seas. They leave that open and wind up with four tons of water in the boat.
Just be sure your limber holes are big enough!
Another fantastic episode full of useful boat building information. Thanks guys!
From experience of wedging a bamboo pole in a tripod, used by Chinese acrobats, you only need an hole about 1 inch bigger than your mast, that gives you a lot of adjustment when the angle applies to the length of the mast/pole. Your accomplishment is very impressive!
I agree, I would think that even a one inch allowance will allow for enough rake. A two inch allowance all around means for a lot of wedges and therefore a lot more potential for movement and displacement of the wedges.....me thinks eh!
I got the impression that he drew in a 2 inch buffer to make sure bolts would not interfere. I think he'll cut the actual hole smaller.
@@jerryf609 OK, making more sense.
I'm hoping the rediculously larger second circle is only to insure the clearance spacing for the bolts. Surely he realizes the opening only needs be a diameter of 2 inches larger max (8 inch hole) for rake and wedging purposes. (One inch on every side all around).
Excellent I look forward to and enjoy every episode, thanks. John from 🏴Scotland
Thanks, John! So glad you're along on the ride with us.
I think the video for the new intro is great but I really do miss the old song it was like your theme song don’t change it
But... it was already the second one, and everyone got upset when that one came in :-)
Embrace the change, folks!
I was a bit sad to not see the wonderful animation anymore, but I can always go back to an older episode to get that buzz!
Humans are inherently against change. Its why society takes generations to progress. Accept it and understand your biological feelings. You and we as a species can acknowledge these inherent issues and move past them. Its not easy and this is a simple one but we CAN do it
@@captaintoyota3171
Feed me the same thing, at the same time, and in the same place. I'll be happy.
Cheers of the same themeFor their whole run most shows have the same theme song the whole run I rely on this is entertainment I wish people would take it seriously instead of dismiss it
I agree - please bring back the old song!
I've learned so much watching from the beginning you guys building the boat. It's cool seeing it taking shape.
I loved "semi-unlikely". so cute!
:D
That's beginning to look dangerously like a boat.
Honestly, it really doesn't look much different from last week, but there is some important work getting done.
Wow...super nice new intro sequence!
Well done!
I like the old Intro music , but love everything else. Keep up the good work!
Like the rest of the comments, the new intro is nicely done and was enjoyable. As always brilliant work on Arabella. Love the constant progress and watching her take shape. Cheers all.
Thanks for watching!
Like the new opening segment!
Absolutely loving the channel. Been watching since day one and im getting excited! It keeps getting closer and closer
Lol the excitement when Steve realized he finished the hatch 😅 love these guys, makes my Friday everytime
I can't remember when I first started watching your boat building journey. But I'm bad, it now feels like my journey and I haven't lifted a finger to help. Hat's off to all your supporters!
thank you for uploading
Great video - been improving with good explanations and fast forwarding over monotonous activity after the start of it. This weeks was especially good seeing the toughness of the boat and thought towards strength and access. Excellent attention to joint fitting.
Bob
Thanks, Bob!
Love the comments; never watch so late in the day...cheers...rr Normandy, France
Alex, happy to see you cutting those half laps without and power tools. Personally the more I work I get done with hand tools the more satisfaction I get. It’s about the process for me.
Word to the wise from an old guy: I got rotator cuff problems now because I used bad technique. Back in the day a physical therapist could have shown me how to avoid the problem and still get the job done. I wince sometimes watching you young guys saw, lift, and twist.
These are the sort of thoughtful replies we live for, William and Bruce. We've got a whole lot of thoughtful, generous people here sharing their experiences and it makes it all worth it. Thanks!
Every week at the video's end I'm like, noooooo!!! It's over way too soon. Until next week, be well and thanks for such a great adventure
Be well and we'll see ya next week!
I'm constantly amazed that for such a "big" construction (Arabella is huge compared to my woodwork projects) the attention to detail and fine fit and finish you guys put in. Taking the time to close up all of the tiny gaps, etc. Good work guys, keep it up. Love the new intro.
Great job guys like always👍👍
you know I have to admit you have exceeded all my expectations. It's one thing to day dream this stuff but to go through all the years of commitments and fixing things gone wrong mean that anything you cose in life can be yours
Thanks for saying so. Doing something big and being relatively new at it, going the furthest we've ever gone every day... it's a lot like the cruising we plan to do when she's launched, really. Just taking those steps every. single. day.
Great video as always.
One of the many things that is so impressive with you both, Alix and Steve, is how quickly you transition from one task to the next and achieve near mastery in relatively short order. I have a hard time simply transitioning from doing the dishes to folding laundry and I do neither well!
I have transitioned to utilizing a dishwasher and a folding utinsel to get my laundry to a uniform size. My drawers haven't looked so nice since I left the Army.
(On that folding utinsel, if you have seen the television show "The Big Bang Theory" it is quite similar to the plastic thing Sheldon uses to fold his shirts in one of the earlier seasons. Look for 'shirt folder' on Amazon.
love the yankee screw driver and going back to hand tools
It's the best way to keep the heads of these soft bronze screws in good shape for future repairs or replacement. Lots of control.
Liking the new intro 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'd like to see a supercut compilation of all the time he says "We're getting there." :-)
Oh man, that WOULD be cool.
Love the new intro sequence and music!
Arabella is looking great, keep up the good work. The new intro looks good too.
Man when I see Arabella in the long shot it's amazing the work that been put into her & I've watched every day. Fitting every piece so accurately is great to see. Alix is awesome.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words, Joe.
Great with a new intro, keep up the great work guys and girls!
Certainly a lot of tedium in this batch of work. And certainly illustrates this is no "weekend warrior" type of project for non-commital types. Takes a rare breed to slog away for days, weeks, months and years toward a mostly romantic goal to sail the seas. Arabella will be a very functional and sturdy piece of art plying the waves and calling at exotic ports, Her crew will have complete confidence as they confront heavy seas-- no corners cut, no inferior materials or workmanship used to save a bit of time or effort. Love the new intro.
Only two years from the launch and already looking like a boat, ain't she?
(In my yard, we counted a third of the overall hours for hull and deck and two thirds for outfit/interior, spars and standing rigging, sails and running rigging, and the bloody rest from plumbing to wiring to cushions to seatrials and changes after seatrials .... just saying)
Great job guys
beautiful work guys
Love seeing this taking form!!
look forward to seeing the house top!
heck yeah, us too!
Enjoyed the new intro. Great to wake up every Friday morning to see your progress! Cheers!
you guys do beautiful work
Love watching you guys work. Carry on.
I look forward to these videos every week. True craftsmen.
Shucks, thanks Chris.
Just amazing how you guys are getting along. Another great edit Ben.
Nice new intro! Very well done.
Kinda exciting at this point in the build, nice work.
I like the new visual part of the new intro, but bring back the music and Akiva’s contribution.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching, Logan.
Agreed. Miss the intro misic and Akiva's howl.
Akia is going to love his new dog house you are building. lol
Ha!! Gosh we hope so. ;)
Always relaxing and educational
Love your videos. Keep up the good work!
Always a joy watching the craftsmanship in action.
Prep for mastage... things coming right along. Ok ok, still a ways to go, but it really looks like a ship now.
Seems top structure is just as much work to get right as side planking. Gonna be sooo beautiful to see her floating. :-)
beautiful finish on the wood!
This was supposed to last 28 minutes, but by the time I had finished pausing it to admire the lines and the craftsmanship, 40 minutes seem to have passed.
Isn't it funny how that happens? Plus this is one of the handful of channels that I read the comments on.
@@jerrymiller276 yeah, by the time we read the comments and reply to some, it is easily an hour of the week gone to a love shared by hundreds if not thousands around the world. If only more people could find like common grounds, the world could be such a better place.
Beautiful - thanks, boys.
The boat is taking shape, steady progress in hard conditions. Nice to see and inspiring, thanks!
You the man Alex, nice work!
Awesome video.
Love the new intro. Very nice.
Hey, thanks Ben. Hope you're staying warm on the west side of things.
Perfection as always gentlemen.
Thanks. We're glad you're here.
Loved the new introduction. Quality work as usual.
Looking good guy... Love the new Intro👍
I know it’s only a minor thing and I love this channel for all sorts of reasons, but I loved the original intro music. Please bring it back
Nice new title sequence. Great to see the deck progressing too.
You guys built a boat and are great you tubers
How fun to have this waiting in my notifications. Over too soon though. Cheers.
I love the new intro. Very nice.
Glad you like it!
I really like the new opening sequence. Nice job
Another great episode! And, as much as I loved the previous intros, the new one is beautiful. Nice work, Ben!
I always enjoy the show, every Friday morning. See you next week.
I'm marking my retirement in South Dakota watching your videos. I'm learning and I look forward to Fridays. Thanks Bill K
Hey Bill, thanks so much for watching and for your support.
Bit of a new look. I like it.
Back to watching the AC75
Great job lads ;-)
Another perfect video, gentlemen!
Aw shucks. Thanks for watching!
Great intro, and awesome progress! Been following for well over a year now, really awesome to see it all coming together. Starting to look like a boat!
There are a LOT more fasteners than I would have ever imagined.
They use wood to hold the fasteners together.
I honestly would not be surprised if a third of Arabella's weight was bronze.
It's nice to see such good progress.
It's also nice to see the profile in the intro.
Keep up the work, and I can't wait for the day she splashes!
The new graphics look great. I've watched for a long time and I never cease to be amazed by the meticulous work you both do. Every piece of this boat fits precisely. I'm anxious to see next week's mock-up of the house.
