  • We working on wrapping up the last of the deck framing before we can get to a house top mockup. While Alix continues with fairing around the house top opening, Steve works on getting more short beams and knees installed in the stern. There are two more knees back there that need to go in and a few last short beams. Steve also explains in detail his technique for cutting his carlin joints.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Hey guys, it is a joy to watch your videos. I have 5 videos i watch weekly and everyone knows that is my free time and leave me alone. They range rrom you, bad chad, the art of boatbuilding and alfaferrari. I received my pin yesterday and will put it on my new woodworking vest. I grew up very close to the herreshoff museum ans was always around wooden boats. Living on the eastern shore of maryland you dont see many wooden boats. When i hit 70 in 4 years and retire my plan is to build either a herreshoff 20 or alerion or possibly a mid 20 herreshoff launch. Keep up the good work and i want you to know you make a 66 year gent happy every week

We live almost directly under one of the major flyways in northern Europe, in Poland. During the migration I have seen flocks of geese with hundreds of birds. They fly quite high, several hundred feet, so they aren't as loud as yours. Over our place they are coming from the east, north east but shortly past our house the make the turn over Germany to go due south. I look forward to it every year.

Good morning - As Alix said at the beginning it really looks and feels like a boat with ribs, beams, knees, and planks all coming together. I am always amazed at your trips to the wood pile, pick up a piece of crappy looking wood with knots and bark and whatever; trimming, rough cut, planing and presto a beautiful boat component awaiting install and final finishing. I think the satisfaction of that happening must impress even yourselves when you stand back and look at it. I can almost smell the wood in that boathouse. This is a wonderful experience for all of us. Thanks. (and great music Ben)

Arabella is coming along well chaps, some lovely joinery in there and those massive knees are very impressive - they would not be out of place in a very much larger boat! I very much like your use of local timbers. One thing I am curious about is why you are planning to build the 'house' already? I would think having a large open hatch would be very useful for when you come to fit out the interior - shifting timber (and large sheets of plywood) in and out would be so much easier without a cabin top there. Anyway, keep it up and thanks for all the high quality footage.

I watched a video on "modern" wooden boat construction. It was basically a laminate boat. None of this finding the right species, or evaluating the knees for the proper grain direction. The knees, in fact, were laminated right into the deck and rib structure. The hull was laminate, and finally skinned with two layers of fiberglass. It came out beautifully, but it felt more like a fiberglass boat than a wooden boat.
I really appreciate the craftsmanship of this boat. Especially this episode, where each joint is custom made to fit. Thanks for the effort!

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  3 года назад +2

Thanks for saying so! Of course, laminates are necessary when that's what's available for material, and they're totally strong and get the job done. If the choice were between being able to get this experience through building a boat, or foregoing the build because of a religious adherence to a mandate on materials, I think we'd have gone ahead and done laminations, too, if we're honest. We're thankful to have these materials, and there are many paths to the water.

Fantastic it looks like we're a couple days away from carpet installation no but seriously I'm really fantasizing on some of the finishes and some hardware and damn I'm loving this boat it looks like this thing would Bob and bounce in any type of sea condition and stay as tight as a drum!

Imagine, if you can, the supervisor in a piano factory scolding an employee for being overly fastidious in their joinery: " You're not making a boat, ya' know!!" 8^D

Noticed that Magswitch resaw guide on the underside of the bandsaw table... I have some finger boards from them for the table saw and think they are really excellent products. I expect many years of service from them.

Lay your spur beams all out at once, then take them and your carlin to the workbench and cut them all at once. You'd save a ton of time. I'd also mill my beams to thickness and leave off all the extra fairing.

Even if these videos were 3 hours long I would say they were over too soon! I can, and have, watched you guys all day. Who would have thought so much goes into building a sea worthy vessel?. She will be unspeakably beautiful when you are finished. How far will she have to travel to reach the water you will launch her maiden voyage? Where do you figure you will go on that voyage?

Aw thanks, Kathy. She'll be trucked a couple of hours to the waterfront, probably in Massachusetts but we're still thinking about it. Shakedown will be on the east coast of the US. Boats aren't totally done when they splash. There will be lots to do still.

Tally Ho and Arabella are going to be dropped into entirely different oceans, and likely at quite different times. I suspect a meeting afloat is somewhat unlikely.

A piece of old school carbon paper would help print the beam sockets in once you get close so you can see exactly where it hits. It would be similar to fitting a neck on a mandolin or guitar. Jerry at Rosa String Works has videos on how he uses it.

Kind of a hassle to have Fire Dept(I think) force you into that new roof(Gothic arch)... but it sure looks like its a nice atmosphere to work in... and that goes for the entire shop you guys built... Beauty!!! Excellent Craftsmanship on the boat too... a Joy to watch all of you work!!!

You guys have done a fantastic job getting the boat to this point and she looks better everyday. Around 17:15 Alex said this seal plate mating to the deck beam will never see water. Clearly he has never been to sea. Every part of that boat will be drenched at some point and more often than could be imagined. I'm sure it was just a bad choice in words.
