Wrapping Up the Mizzen Mast - Episode 165 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • The mizzen mast has been tandem project as the planking has progressed. Alix chipped away at it between other important tasks, and now it's finally finished! Of course, the hounds and hardware need to be installed, but this big, beautiful, repurposed piece of Victoria's past and Arabella's future is shaped and painted. It will get stashed out of the way in the boathouse for when the time comes to work on the rigging.
    Right as we were wrapping this important project, we had a fan come out to volunteer his time and talent. Greg was not only a huge help with some shop work, but as a filmmaker, picked up the camera a bit, offering us a different perspective of the project. We had a chat about the philosophies and ideas about this project.
    We hope you enjoy this episode. Thank you for watching, subscribing and supporting! See you next Friday!
    News Ben’s found something that will finally make it possible for us to have closed captioning again for those who need it. Accessibility is important to us, and we appreciate everyone’s patience with this. We should be able to roll this out soon.

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    I built a small wooden boat just over ten years ago. I expected some questions about its construction etc. What I didn't expect was the amount of people that couldn't believe that it was built by hand with simple wood working tools and fasteners. A lot were completely astonished it wasn't bought from a store. I took that as a big compliment. Great work on Arabella. Looking forward to launch.

    Alix, you've got to be so proud of that mizzen mast. It's stunning. Something that's always going to be on full view in Arabella and will always make the many hours of craftmanship you put into it so special and so worth it. Very well done.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  3 года назад

      Part of living a fulfilled life is to have the support of others, or at the very least, no boundaries set up by others around you. No matter what someone wants to pursue, imagine a world in which everyone is encouraged to find their path. No gatekeepers telling them they couldn’t or shouldn’t do this or that... whether they pursue boat, house, farm, city life, kids, no kids, wooden boat, fiberglass boat... makes money, doesn’t make money at all... there are myriad fulfilling paths, but some would seem completely improper to or for another. So huzzah to a full life, out the window with proper, and in turn, make life easeful for others on their path, too.

Your work with hand tools pretty much showed me that your wonder craftsmen. Not many left in this country. I was told by my doctor's that I have CHF. and IPf of the lungs. My time is about a year or a little longer. My worry is that the crew won't finish before my time is done. I really want to see this beautiful boat in the water with the air filling the sails. Very interesting discussion, I think the real answer is that you guys design from the heart and the Arabella will be a 1000% Unique, each part has its own story, part of grandfather`s tree, part of Victoria etc etc., made by a tool you built or a tool that was donated to you and so on. You will at one point be sitting inside the boat and telling some future grandson or nephew the story of each part of the Arabella. You are not simply building a boat, you are building a character... a living legend. Well done guys.

    I went the same route with Satori. She's also based on Atkin's Eric, with tons of teak and bronze with fiberglass hull. The biggest struggle has been keeping the plastic components to a minimum inside. The only allowed exceptions have been the VHF and SSB. Everything else is hidden away to keep her looking bristol with only brass lamps and wood showing. It's amazing how much plastic can ruin the appeal of a traditional double ender. On the other hand, I am all for using carbon fiber and dyneema for rigging. It looks great even on old rigs. Dyneema doesn't clash and carbon fiber (spinnaker pole) can be painted to hide the tech. Varnish can be canvassed to reduce the maintenance. Spare no expense on it.

    This era of internet is more positive than negative though. The books are accessible even if the local library doesn't have them. The materials are available in spite of the local hardware store never having heard of them. The advice and encouragement come from forum members who live states away. And that's all before you get to the fact that these guys have been able to turn this into a full time endeavor with earnings from internet sources.

    Alex, just one correction on the Total Protect. The thumb print test is only when applying oil based bottom paint over it. TotalBoat TotalProtect can be recoated over itself for up to 60 days. If that time window is missed, sand with 80-grit sandpaper, and
    wipe the surface clean with a clean, lint-free cotton rag wetted with TotalBoat Dewaxer & Surface Prep, and allow the solvent to
    evaporate completely. Recoat with TotalProtect.

      Thanks! We won’t use epoxy for that... Bedding with wax or Dolfinite is where it’s at. Epoxy makes it darn near impossible to remove later for regular maintenance. We have a few friends who have had to remove epoxied fasteners and epoxied bungs, and it’s a nightmare.

    Happy Arabella day! I can not get over the beauty of that mizzen mast. When will you be starting on the main mast? I can only imagine how the main mast will look along side the mizzen. Your granddad I'm sure is so proud of how you chose to utilize that tree he planted forever ago. When will you start on things like the water and fuel tanks? Will you get pre made or will you build those also? As always another great video. Welcome to the new guy. I didn't catch his name but welcome and thanks for your perspective.

      Hi Kathy, happy Friday! Will start on the main mast a little bit into the future, and as for some interior details like the tankage, we’re right around the corner from doing interior fit out! We will most likely use a couple of monel tanks that we harvested from another boat, among other things.

    • @kathywrightjohnson6804
      @kathywrightjohnson6804 3 года назад

      That's cool. I am looking forward to seeing some of the interior work done. It gives a better picture on how to manage such things as fitting things in tight spaces. How much living space is there? I'm also excited to see her planking done and corking to begin. Seeing all those cracks filled in and faired out will be a great video. Closer and closer. Would you do all this again in the future? After you have sailed around the world. Or do you think you will get an ordinary job and take Arabella out on vacation?
