Installing the Oak Shutter Planks - Episode 166 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- It's a big moment here in the Acorn to Arabella boathouse. We have been steadily working on closing up the hull and now the oak shutters are going in.
After these are installed, we will only have six more planks to go. Two cedar strakes will lead up to the final black locust sheer strakes. Right now though, we are reveling in the sight of a closed up hull inside the boat. It is amazing what a difference closing that gap makes visually.
Thank you to everyone watching and supporting, and to all our friends who came to help with these special installations. And of course, a big thank you to Carolyn who has worked so hard these last couple months and who we really hope to be able to get back here soon!
Take care and see you all next Friday!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Sad to see Carolyn leave, but wish her well in her endeavors! Hope to see her back on Arabella soon!
From watching the pour and thinking you guys have at least a couple screws loose to a most beautiful hull and realizing how gifted you and your friends really are. The journey has been remarkable to watch. Thanks for sharing.
Acorn To Arabella episodes keep getting better and better.
Good luck Carolyn!
ditto
Yes Carolyn has been amazing, I am very impressed with her skills and work ethic. I think any boat yard who do this type of work would do well to employ her for the future of wooden boat building and the skills needed to do that specialist type of work. Go CAROLYN!
Looking beautiful absolute work of art. The old timers hundreds of years back would be chuffed.
A testament to what a great idea and a community of like minds can accomplish! Congratulations on this milestone! The smaller that gap got the more anxious I became to see it filled.
Wahoo! Whisky/beer plank is in. Another milestone met. Excellent work everyone. Arabella is getting more beautiful everyday. Best of luck in you next adventure Carolyn hoping to see you back soon.
Been a long time to get to this point. Great job! And good luck to you Carolyn. Hope to see you back soon.
Having those old guys is valuable, as you know. They are patient and safe and work hard, but also smart.
I look forward to seeing Arabella and Tally Ho docked next to each other.
Each episode i wonder which will be finished first, and i think it'll be Tally Ho, maybe, that's who i'm betting on anyway.
@@Zestrayswede There are still quite a few variables as to which will hit the water first. There are some tasks that are being done in a different order where one might be ahead of the other. Arabella is farther along with deck structure and engine placement where as Tally Ho is farther along with the planking, faring and paint. The internal structure and furniture are other variables where Arabella might have the advantage with when it will be completed.
@@michaelcaraway2305 I know, that's why i'm saying it's anyone's game, but i am still betting on Tally Ho
Tally ho will take longer.... more expertise and help, and more money. BUT. All that means is Leo will be more meticulous with details being perfect as a show boat, and moving to a rented space means the money won't go as far. Steve's making a boat to sail, not to show off so much, so the level of finish and detail will be less. And the finishing details are 90% of the time on a project..... I predict Arabella to fill her sails and conduct sea trials first, but Tally ho to cross an ocean first (it IS a tested design built and sailed by a pro)
@@Zestrayswede Well Tally Ho has a bigger team too.
Congratulations gentlemen (and professional lady) ! Great video! Can’t wait ‘til you’re “on the hook”.
Arabella's looked like a boat for a long time - but now she really looks like a boat 👍
Words cannot describe the grin on my face
Thank you for sharing your journey
Bon chance, Carolyn. I hope to see you soon
I have no doubt after all the fine detail work crafting those shutter planks into perfection it was immensely satisfying to beat the boogers into position!
Thanks for posting and sharing. Really great to see how well the shutter planks went in!
The whole shutter plank sequence was wonderful videography
It's the JOURNEY! It is the Journey, of building it.
Looking at that boat house & dawning realization that for Arabella to sail she must leave & travel from her birth place to the sea. One hopes that some of those wonderful woodworking machines & tools can continue life at another boatyard & give life to more nautical beasts in the time after Arabella has grown wings & fledged. Wood is Good.
Thanks for sharing the journey to the journey.
Keep Well
10:16 Shout out to UPS cookie-man. "Making a tolerable job out of a lousy one." ~Cookie-man *probably
What a great person to take care of the pup like that.
What an episode! Carolyn leaving *sigh*, putting the shutter planks in *yeah*; seeing the preparation and then seeing it all work out SOOOO WELL! I would probably not be able to lift the hammer over my head, yet alone actually hammer with force against the plank. It is a wonderfull scene seeing having a beer after a job well done. Congrats!
Congratulations on installing your shutter planks!! Watching your project has been a source of inspiration for many people!
WOW - Arabella and Team have reached the next step. So excited about what is to come next week.
The end of an era.... congratulations Gentlemen and Gentlewomen...
Still a few more planks to go! ALMOST the end... then there's just, oh lordy, EVERYTHING ELSE. hahah. Thanks for watching!
Shutters planks - Done! I know it's just one plank but boy, doesn't it transform both the outside and the inside. High praise from a shipwright too, Stephen! Thanks for sharing.
That means a lot, John, thanks!
Watching those planks go in was a thing of beauty
Congratulations to you and to all who have helped along the way; great moment and milestone in the process of building this beautiful new authentic oak sailboat. Truly ACORN to Arabella!
Wow, what an amazing fit. Now you have a hull. congratulations. Good luck Carolyn, hope to see you back again 🌺
Just love the concept of a fence fitted to your electric plane to keep the edge of timber true.
When the old guys tell you, "you done good" you done good!
WOW! Looking so good. Hopefully Carolyn will be back soon. There is something about a smart and lovely lady building stuff with her hands that is fun to watch. Best of luck!
Prises de vues magnifiques Alix. Du grand cinéma. Le tout sans "story board" ? Wow ! Du cinéma vérité à son meilleur.
Thank you guys and girl. I deeply needed you all today. My wife died last night at 3:14. An horrible story.
My best friend for the last 50 years, my college sweetheart.
This episode is a landmark for you and Arabella. This episode will always be a landmark for me too.
Putting an end to both chapters in our lives.
Thank you again.
PS Joe could'nt say it better than at 25:45 " Anything you did a fantastic job."👍
And oh, yeah, nice move Carolyn ! "Thank you !" 🤣
Marc, we are so deeply sorry to hear about your wife. Our sincere condolences and we wish you peace in this tough time.
We hope that the videos we make can give you a little distraction and joy.
All the best to you from all of us here ❤️
Watching you fit those shutter planks was satisfying and a little bit terrifying ! I was sure something would split or splinter with the "encouragement" from the sledge hammers. Testament indeed to carful measurement, preparation and well seasoned wood !!! fantastic..
Major mile stone. The Shutter Planks are on. Congratulations! It looks Beautiful
Guys, Arabella’s looking fantastic!😎👍🍻🇬🇧
Have watched every episode and I'm still amazed and in awe at what you have achieved and the way you have achieved it well done guys everyone who contributed to now should also be proud
Have a great Summer Carolyn. Looking forward to seeing you later in the year :)
Can't even see Carolyn w/o hearing, "It's not a piano."
I now have a new one from Steve: "It all comes out in the wash, and this is the wash."
Well done guys. Amazing yet again.
You can call that a hull now. Great job!
Just like my cedar strip canoe but with sledgehammer 💪😂
Great post. Always great to see what's going on with Acorn to Arabella.

I find that oddly moving… or I’m in a weird emotional place?
@@francescosirotti8178
Especially if you crafted the beer… we do that here LOL
Your "Elder Statesmen" are working machines! I would love to have them around my house for a week!! Great Men!! DD
Every great once in a while a couple of people like Alix & Steve come along and make it good for all of us.
"We can't clamp it"
- enter the biggest C clamp I've ever seen
my thought exactly!
comically large clamp enter the chat
@@Adamsadventures83 Yeah they barely work, exactly. Too much give. You'd have to build it so heavy duty to not flex it you wouldn't even be able to pick it up haha. But yeah, better than nothing. Can't grow a 3rd arm.
Old school
I could think of a few uses in the bedroom for that.
Awesome as always. The cinematography and editing are second to none on RUclips. Bilge is getting 62 pounds of dog treats for our furry friend. And by the way, screw you guys, those were NOT tears of joy in my eyes watching you reach another milestone, it was windy.
Aw Jim, thanks so much. It’s windy here too, apparently.
You should be so proud of yourselves she is going to a beautiful boat. Well done.
The most awesome thing about this build, is the fact that all the lumber to this point came from your property. Grown, harvested, milled and installed all in the same place! It is epic! I cant wait for the interior work to get going! Congratulations on reaching this milestone guys!
The shape and lines of the boat are great, she is going to dance on the water :)
Cool that you got the shutter planks in. I'm waiting for the whisky plank! Seriously, the amount of skull sweat you've put into this project is staggering. The knowledge and skills you've acquired along the way are equally staggering. And after you splash her you'll acquire yet another huge skill set. Very nicely done, crew!
Happy Friday, Bill!
Sorry to see Carolyn go but I am sure she will advance in her tradecraft and come back to add her expertise to the project. We see a bit of the build on Utube and her comment about how much is done behind the scenes makes one appreciate how much work must go into the project. She looks beautiful and I can't wait for the interior work to be started.
Wow! Congratulations guys. A seriously momentous occasion. Well done.
Landmark episode 👍🏴
Found you channel around the time you were preping to cast the lead ballast. Been a fan ever since and loving every minute. Congratulations on the milestone, guys. Best wishes looking forward.
Same here. Discovered the channel just after you poured the ballast. Quickly decided to go back to the beginning and watch everything. Now, I wake up every Friday and watch your video to start my day
I think a lot of us started watching around then. It’s been amazing to watch the progress
That's when the youtube algo hooked me too.
same here i was looking up how to melt lead and was amazed to watch all that lead get poured
Me too. I thought " these crazy kids think they can melt and pour a lead keel ballast". We know how that turned out, and been hooked ever since.😁
all the best Carolyn and good job to all ....
Best Caroline!! Guys, job well done. Fascinating and beautiful vessel coming together nicely!
Missed you all; wife and I were on a longweekend(no computers,) on the Norman Coast. Great find on returning home Sunday Evening. Cheers and congratulations...rr Normandy, Fra.
Putting in the shutter planks a lot of critical measurements. Well done Reminds me of Victoria, a lot of critical measurements all gone....
Great vid. I can't believe someone can just get emotional for a planck being hammered. She looks so nice, man... and the boat too. ;) Haha, seriously, we'll miss you Carolyn!
Sorry to see Caroline go, but life is often the accumulation of it's hurdles. Been great having you along on the journey. Great attention to detail prepairing the shutter planks, guys and gals. It zipped right in there like it was made for it (😉).
Edit: BTW; My guess on the package is ballast stones.
Shutter planks, aka whiskey planks. Awesome job to the team .
This tool rool full of Veritas spoke shaves at the beginning ❤❤
There’s no spoke shave emoji and we’re not sure who to complain to about that. 🧐
every video is a joy thank you lads and lassie
Started watching in early 2020. Took a break after a 2 day binge. Come back yesterday and I'm caught up to here.... I just wanted to say, that Carolyn added a sense of confidence to the boat house. I hope you will invite her back to help finish this project. As of this moment there is a fundraiser for a shipwright... I have my fingers crossed it's to bring her talent back to the boathouse.
She’s moved on to some amazing things. A friend is coming though!
The peanut butter and jelly shot just before the plank goes on always makes me hungry. 20:37.
Dolfinite: THE FORBIDDEN SANDWICH TOPPING.
Fantastic job guys. Planned. Worked the measurements and executed it flawlessly.
Great work! Congratulations!
I just love the ol' guys! Grandpa cracks me up! Can't wait to have Carolyn back, she will succeed wherever she goes!
Wonderful episode thank you guys. John 🏴
Very happy for you all, Cheers!
Nice work guy's. Sorry to see Carolyn go, apart from the boat she was the eye candy(with incredible skills). :)
Great work guys looking foward to the next video👍
I can’t believe you have not gone to metric, it’s so much easier, measuring and calculating everything; we changed over nearly 60 years ago; the best system there is, it’s not hard to convert. You blokes are doing a wonderful job, keep up the great work. Regards John Brassell, Sydney
Cheers!
Love how as you progress you recognize where to focus your attention and dial it in! Keep up the great work!
2 and a half years ago when I was there in the December of 2018, only about half the frames were in, there was not a plank on this boat, and the rabbet was still being dug out..
Such a lot of work you guys have put into this beautiful vessel..
Cheers.
You guys make my week complete. Thank you
Whether working in fat coats or with whirring fans, season after season this has been wonderful viewing.
Shucks, thanks Eleanor. That’s very kind.
Remember fella's '' slow and steady wins the race.'' . Great to see the grey beards pitching in and swinging a sledge hammer. Greetings from Down Under in Australia.
The saw man on my first professional carpenter gig told me two things along that line. "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast." "If you get in a hurry you'll screw up in a hurry." That saw man had been a carpenter since shortly after God created wood. :-)
What a great Show. I am excited to see, how Arabella looks when its finished. Greetings from Germany.
Congrats on the huge milestone, and thanks for another great video!
Love the Beer Plank, Fantastic
Carolyn, have a great summer. Hope it's possible for you to return!
Markedly different video style. New gear? 4K? Congratulations guys.
Using a sledge-hammer held at head level and then hitting UPWARDS - your shoulders are going to know all about that, tomorrow morning. All credit.
Nothing less than awesome! I look forward to Fridays so much! A great reward for me after two days of moving on up the K&A Canal in England, ten locks, one swing bridge and a new town to explore :-)
another reason for universal healthcare. So many people who contribute to making our society a more interesting place need the help that we can definitely afford.
This nautical beast is looking more and more like a living marine animal. Lovely.
Young Ironsides! Nice videography.
Woot!!! That was VERY satisfying. 👏👏👏
Fair winds and following seas, Carolyn! Best of luck.
Well done on the boat and we’ll done on the video work. Superb.
Bravo 👍 very nice work it’s a real boat already. Every week is a high light for me to see your all together working on the boat. If I Could i was there to help.
Thanks for watching, Tonnie!
Grandpa with the quick Biblical reference........God bless all who will sail on her!
Gotta love people who aren’t afraid to share their faith these days even just with little references like that.
well done! And thanks for sharing this project.
What a cool UPS guy. Always makes sure to give Akira a cookie.
I was just talking today at work about how amazing your commitment is to the task at hand. Well done on hitting this milestone.
Thanks so much!
what a pro! she's going somewhere in life. I can't wait to see where, so keep us posted, please.
Carolyn was a rare find. Hope she can make it back.
Those are the largest damn C-Clamps I've ever seen!
Looking awesome you all! Hopefully everything works out for Carolyn in the future where ever she lands!
Milestone! She looks beautiful. We'll miss Carolyn. Wishing her well and hope to see her again soon.
