Cedar Strip House Top, Gluing Up - Episode 171 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

- The mock-up, and now mold, for the cabin house is finally put to work as the cedar strip-planked house comes together. Building this crucial part of the boat with this method has many reasons, chief among them being that strip-planking is extremely strong and waterproof, and that we don't have to use any very long, very clear pieces of cedar to make something that we intend to paint at the end.
Alix announces that he's off to France for a while to take care of his father, and that we can't possibly know when he'll be able to return. We'd like to take this as an opportunity to say that though we don't talk about all the bumps along the way as we build Arabella and that it's not our focus to share from our personal lives, we've faced some challenges. Take care of each other out there. Take the time to heed the call when family needs help. Whether you or the universe chose that family, or, if your family chose you, we hope you are able, as Alix has done, to be there when it counts most.
You'll get a little peek at some possible interior finishes and materials, Steve and Robin do much of the glue-up, and of course, Radar and Akiva are very, very good doggos. Thanks for your patience as Steve learns the new camera gear. We've told him it's fairly simple. On that note, enjoy the absolute visual freakout of a digital camera on a work surface getting the business end of a power tool.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

The burl and black walnut look great, but I would not use them for the majority of interior trim. The black walnut could used to trim the edges of the berths and such, and it will not be dinged as much with use. The burl needs a wider expanse to show its true personality.
It is looking to be a two dog boat. Keep up the great work, and we will wait for the return of Alix.

Alix, It's best to be there. Steve, I'm always awed by your nerve to drill by hand through a foot or more of material by hand. The helper with a square helps but it still takes guts to do something like that.
Love the camera work at the end showing the oscillation. Fascinating. Good choice to leave that in. The bumble bees were nice too.

Loved the special effect where there were two of you working the same job at once. Reminded me about how I think I am my own best company and hardest worker . . . besides myself.
All the best with the family and yes it does come first. Last year was a good reminder that although Alix is an important part of the project it is Steve’s boat. Alix can’t be expected to give the project the same focus as Steve.

Alix I know you are already making preparations to go or have already left to attend to your family. I hope that all turns out well and your time is enjoyable at least. It is good to have family worth caring about and even better when your best friend/s are family too and just say "go" we will handle it until you are ready and can get back into the build. This feeds off of the comment I made last week about the pace that Steve and you have set for this entire project. It is important but not too important that family and friends can't take priority over it. Steve, you and the "crew" are doing this the right way imo

The eye is definately drawn to it. Perhaps it will be most effewctive as a highlight wood around a plainer grained white wood.
Kudos to you guys for doing everything the right way and not cutting any corners. I can't stop comparing it in my head to the repair work other channels are doing to fix lazy designs on modern yahts. The strip planked house alone is so much stronger than major structural elements of a Lagoon.

That self-mixing epoxy in the tube is such a perfect material for that job.
Puts it where you want it, no batches, no putty knives. We figure it saved a bunch of material, too, because of how consistently we can lay it.
Good luck with family issues Alix. I'd go with the white ash on the inside. It's lighter color will lighten up the interior and make it seem brighter. Also, its toughness will prevent it form getting messed up from bumps or thing hitting the interior surfaces like a softer wood would do.
