With Ziyech, Hakimi and Boufal Morocco have speed on the flanks with great technical ability for counterattacking. They defended stoutly the whole 123 minutes with Amrabat and Saiss standouts in the middle and even when fatigued large spaces did not develop as they remained in a compact structure. They did start to give Spain more time on the ball higher up the pitch with reduced pressing the man on the ball in the 2nd half. Bono was excellent in the penalties, and Ziyech and Hakimi held their nerve in a high pressure situation whereas Spain's Sarabia, Soler and Busquets crumbled. Well done Morocco well deserved 🇲🇦 👏

@@Huckleberry42not really, it’s the coach style to play defensively. Playing aggressively and leaving space behind just doesn’t work that much, especially when playing against a talented team. the rigid defensive style and relying on free kicks/corners and counter attacks seem the way to go. Netherlands used the same tactic as well and won against the USA that didn’t do well defensively and left lots of spaces behind which the Netherlands team used it in their counter attacks. And they just let the USA keep the ball most of the time
This is world cup, showing off and playing tiki taka doesn’t matter if you can’t score. Spain kept the ball most of the time and did their tiki taka, yet with no avail
It’s the result that matters, not the show
One can show off after scoring many goals and have a big gap, since it won’t be threatened much if it receives a goal, but as long as they are not leading, they shouldn’t leave spaces behind, because if Spain scored just one goal then it’s game over, Morocco will be forced to move their defensive row forwards so that they get near the goal post of the opponent, and this will allow more opportunities for the Spanish team to make use of the spaces left behind
A solid and rigid tactic by Ragragui that is working well so far.

That was really insightful, thank you! As a Wolves fan, interesting to see Saiss do well, but when he was at Wolves, I was always worried he would give away a penalty all the time... but at the same time, I always thought he was a good player... miss him.

seems like the theme/lessons from past few weeks are:
    1. 2 banks of four, keep space between defense and midfield to minimum, off the ball
    2. keep wingers close to touchline, keep wide and exploit space behind fullbacks, on the ball
    3. defend in mid-block. be brave and positive in pressing/counter press, not to stand off and defend in low block (aka park the bus)
    4. favors ball carrying/forward running midfielders to break defense line (such as Bellingham, Enzo Fernandez, Paqueta, Griezmann, at some point Sofyan Amrabat).
Is it an error to let Pedri drop so deep, effectively take him out of the game? and Gavi neutralized
seems like 4-4-2 is back in fashion now as off the ball formation.

But there have more than enough skills to make a goal too when they have a chance.

Really great summary! I wouldn't say that the way Morocco played won out. The way both teams played, got them a stalemate. If Spain had the good fortune of scoring more penalties, we'd all be saying they just edged it with their quality and had more possession and better chances during the 120 minutes in any case.

Reminds me of the match when Carlo Ancelotti gave Diego Simeone a taste of his own medicine in 2014 UCL quarters second leg. Madrid kept switching the ball the flanks for 90 minutes and kept attempting shots from mid-line. A boring game for casuals, but that did start opening gaps in the Atletico defence and Chicharito scored the only goal of the match. Wish Lucho had bit of that gene instead of following his ideas without proper execution.

Thanks for the clear analysis. We are very proud of this achievement. Many criticize Morocco for making matches dull and closed. But we were playing interesting matches and going out in the first round. That is why coach Walid stated: "We no longer want to participate and enjoy. I want to win, not play. We have ambitions to go far and why not win the cup."
