The best final including all sports. I thought I was going to have a heart attack for real. At the end I cried. I’ve always been a fan of Argentinian futbol, but I’m Puerto Rican and I cried at the end. What a match!
yes but he was late to adapt to the french changes and paid the price for it. the match could've ended in argentina's favor in the normal time. at the 70th minute mark, changes SHOULD'VE been done. Players were too tired and french had 4-5 fresh lungs.
i did i even told my friends that scaloni should exploit that gap between dembele and kounde , dembele doesnt drop to defend well and well kounde doesnt go forward at all lol then there was rumours that scaloni was going to play a 5back formation i was scared for that bcuz it doesnt show confidence in playing like that waiting for a counter when u have messi on ur team.
Messi attracted French defenders to the right, with Molina overlapping, and DePaul pressing hard, so the switch to right to left was always on to Argentina. Bonus point was that getting DiMaria on the ball meant that Mbappe was farthest away from it. Once DiMaria leaves that dynamic is broken, also the French subs impacted the game
@@mrD66M I agree with you, when your strategy depends on DiMaria open atacking the left side and you change that player, you need to change your strategy too. On the other hand, you've pressed all the match, at 70' the fresh legs are vital. Great match, great players, great teams👏🏻
@@cutalin Yeah its what Peter said it's not so much that france didn't want to play, its because they knew how to counter theur tactics leaving Mbappe useless
France was completely dominated for 70'. No chance creation at all. Deschamps substitutions helped, but the tie was mostly Argentina's decision to close the game parking the bus in halfway manner and Mbappe. As soon as they tied and Argentina recovered from the hit, they started dominating again. Save the 5 m after France scored the second goal and Argentina was dazed, there is no point in the game where France played better. Scaloni was much better today. Perhaps he should have fully parked the bus (rather fall back timidly, but did not work with Netherlanda) or bring fresh legs earlier (but it was a tough decision, most Argentine players were having a good game). It does not take from the fact he completely surprised Deschamps with Di Maria en the left. Nobody before this game had thought of attacking the French right. They all attacked the left and France knew how to solve it.
@@red149 he was supposed to be recovering from an injury and could not play an entire game. We knew he would be substituted regardless of how he played. Also, it is pretty much unavoidable if you want to pull back, given that you cannot take out Messi and taking out the stricker is too much.
@@elr492 I’m not questioning the substitution. I’m questioning the timing ! It was the pivot time for France to release the pressure and start attacking .
The mastermind behind all this was that scmbag from Poland who gifted Argentina a cheap penalty in a WC final and didn't send off Otamendi for commiting a penalty as the last standing man (which is an automatic red card by the rules)
@@blackbox1024 Cheap penalty? Isn't that like half pregnant? And in the play previous to the penalty for the 3-3, there is an Upamecano's handball previous to the Montiel's one, but don't let facts get in the middle of a good story.
@@ThePrinceOfNigeria u’re saying those weren’t legit penalties ? There’s no rule about how many penalties can you give in a match, but there were other rules wich werent taken into consideration like sending Otamendi off for commiting a penalty as the last standing man - which is an automatic red card.
@@gerardomalazdrewicz7514 otamendi would have been sent off for that penalty in 9/10 times. It is an automatic red card when the last standing man commits a foul, let alone a penalty. Di Maria’s goal came directly from a counter attack which was started by fouling Mbappe (foul not given) fk off, the whole world wanted to give this to messi, it wasn’t fair at all.
As a French I must say i feared him more than Messi...especially since he faced Jules Kounde who was our weak point from the begining. Congratulation to Argentina anyways, even though i wished France won, this game was incredible in all aspects, this is why i love football.
The agenda does not allow him to win MoTM. I fail to understand it honestly, the match in regular + extra time ends in a 3-3 draw. 1. Messi scores a gifted penalty and an open net tap in from 4m away and gets MoTM award. 2. Mbappe levels from 2-0, scores a difficult volley, wents on to scoring a hattrick in a fkin WC final and still doesn't get MoTM. What kind of biased sh*t is this? honestly Messi is the best dribbler of all time but i can't believe it how this single ability has made almost everyone this blind to push for biased agendas and promote him even at times he doesn't deserve to.
It’s also important to note that when Di María was taken off due to a muscle strain, they weren’t as threatening on the attack. This allowedFrance to come out more. Had he been able to stay on, a 3rd goal would have likely come and thus seal the game.
A huge moment was when Macallister decided to pass to Di Maria. A more selfish player could have blown that opportunity on the shot, but instead he saw the opportunity and made what was a fantastic assist.
France got injured players , still survived, imagine if really did practice their defense and the flue, the injuries , if in full form would beat Argentina
argentina actually almost shut him off the entire game but the wrong substitution make them suffer and mbappe exploit it in the last minute of the second half
Messi didnt need to prove anything by winning WC, he was, is, and always will be The Greatest Of All Time. But now, even statistically, he is the GOAT, he complated football. What A Time to be alive!
no, the debate about whether Messi or Ronaldo were the GOAT was going on for nearly 18 years, the WC was the ultimate prize to cement their status. Messi reached two World Cup finals winning one. Ronaldo never reached a World Cup final. Therefore the debate is over.
Didn’t need to prove anything because your “opinion” was already made lol you weren’t changing your goat choice off a World Cup like any other goat candidate would whether Ronaldo won or Neymar etc , this just gives him the World Cup the one everyone wants but a debate doesn’t end off a result of a shootout lol that’s like ending world Hunger with a coin flip , opinions were already made befor the tournament and guarantee stand after regardless of outcomes
This is going to be a World Cup final for the ages. Absolutely extraordinary. End-to-end action. Clinical experts on both sides. The biggest issue I have with Argentina is their tendency of choking on "some" big games. They almost lost it with the leaky defenses. I'm very sure that they were having flashbacks of the Netherlands game. A game that they should have won hands down, but made it harder for themselves. The Camavinga substitution was ingenious. And I started to notice a difference for the French defense right away. These two coaches are some of the best.
But what impressed me is, how argentina come back after such knockouts. In both games they experienced a equaliser and after a shock period they played again very well with big chances. Totally a mental powerhouse
@@e.l.b6435 Our people has recovered from FAR worse situations than being behind on the score of a match (as important as it is). Take a look at our recent history (specially the 2001 Crisis).

Before the game, I was saying (to nobody in particular, haha) that ARG's best defense would be a *good offense*. Scaloni correctly identified that France's willingness to be passive early in games had yet to be exploited by a team with as much firepower as Argentina. England had come close, but couldn't fully capitalize. Scaloni took a bold approach with DiMaria and the 4-3-3 to start and it paid off - not just in 2 goals by HT, but in keeping France on their back heels and even forcing Mbappe to track back further than he normally does, which somewhat mitigated his speed advantage. Argentina's midfield were also aggressive as heck once again, clogging the middle and frustrating France's pace with the stop-go play from the fouls. Scaloni doesn't yet have the long resume of other coaches, but he deserves more props for his tactical flexibility through this tournament.
@@brocklandersx87 That is true, his substitutions in the final were questionable at best. But as a strategist, he made all the right moves at the right times in this tournament. He also deserves a lot of credit for bringing technical discipline and team spirit to ARG. Messi aside, the ARG national team was in shambles when Scaloni took over.
It was a really intense match. It was like watching a tug-of-war game; Argentina scores, then France scores, Argentina scores again then France came back. And then there was penalties... which is where the game goes from sweat to tears. Argentina & France both did good, but of course I'm more happy for Argentina 🇦🇷
yup, this is probably the most thrilling match in the WC history. Congrats Messi, after all these years, he finally made Maradona cry on the heaven. Diego must be so proud of his little successor.
From Argentina myself, now that im a little more relaxed, everyone should give credit to Deschamps, he read the morale impact and did the right changes. Yes, the goals were from Mbappe, but France's come back came from the bench. Im happy that we can discuss football here, im happy that i saw my country winning the world cup, and im happy that out of all the players in the field today, there are a lot of them that will make wonders in the coming world cups. Football future is bright
I came into the match expecting France to dominate on the offensive end to be completely honest. I thought their line up was far too strong defensively to penetrate and would maybe end up with Argentina resorting to long distance shots. Scaloni is an absolute tactician for utilizing Di Maria like he did and overloading the wings. They both deserve credit but that was a Scaloni masterclass
I think France players outdid their trainer. Deschamps was clearly outsmarted by Scaloni and only a mistake by Otamendi opened the game. Deschamps was pretty rubbish in this match, if you ask me: he has the most brilliant set of individual players and he parked the bus and waited for the brilliance of Mbappe. Come on, that is stingy af. Mbappe was the man behind France's come back... Argentina have a great defence and Messi. They were great and deserved to win without a doubt.
You nailed, Di María position was unexpected and created a penalty and a goal by Di María. France decision to replace Griezmann was a mistake in my opinion. It is true that Griezmann was overwhelmed at first, but he was getting the grasp and started to play well. However, MBappe was the difference from France. The first penalty was a clear defensive mistake by Argentina. But again, Messi showed why he is the GOAT, creating passes and finally scored at 108 min. Unfortunately, France got a lucky penalty (handball) at the last minute. Hence the tie. Both Teams played very well. It was the most exciting final WC game I’ve ever seen. At the end, Argentina played a better game and that’s why they won.
During France's HF against Morocco, it seems that I saw Griezmann every minute. But against Argentina, he was hardly ever to be seen. Can somebody better than I in football tactics tell me whether Griezmann was in a bad day, or whether Argentina found the way to muzzle him?
@@st-ex8506 What Argentina did was to overwhelmed the midfielders by always having 4 and sometime 5 players covering. During 75 minutes Argentina was dominant. They created more chances. It was Mbappe who created the real challenge to Argentina. France’s substitution proved to be of a genius. At the end the game was decided with penalties.
@@st-ex8506 I think the issue was Mbappe...his complete inaction in the first 70min ultimately got Giroud ( the leading goal scorer for France ) and Griezmann fired. Messi involved from the KO with Argentina and Mbappe who everyone is saying is this "amazing player" was ANONYMOUS, completely anonymous, for 70min of a world cup final!!! I don't get it. You have this guy who is as fast a lighting who won't press or track back so you have Giroud and Griezmann; no spring chickens trying to do the work of 3 cos the primadonna wearing no. 10 has just not shown up. What is the manager to do take off Mbappe??? Never happening!!! let's swap out the other two lads both who have had a massive tournament up to then. The French team performance only lifted when Munai was brought down in the box and out of a nothing attack the momentum switched when Mbappe scored. And what did the second goal come from? Messi being robbed at the edge if the attacking third; again Mbappe not within an ass roar of that effort. Mind you his eventual finish was top class. Mbappe had three finishing touches but did nt create a whole lot over the 120min. Contrast this with Messi performance throughout the while game. There is just no comparison. Mbappe bit of a Millenial performer. I d have been brave enough to take him off. The French as much of a goal threat with Griezmann and Giroud on board.
martnez, the goal keep is the real MVP for me not only for this game but also for the game against netherlands, that lead up to this game. so underrated, his save at 120' is what gave them the world cup.. also he had touches on the ball on both of mbappe goals, but only pace of the strike took the best of him.. it takes great talent to figure where the ball is to be hit, especially during penalities, and this guy has been consistently delivering phenomenaly ever since copa america cup, that's not a little feat by any measure..
and 5 of those goals were scored by the 2 players who were basically the main contesters for the golden shoe xD The golden shoe changed possesion in this match like.. 3-4 times.
I think France was physically less ready than Argentina meaning that they couldn't withstand the Argentinian aggressive pressing. But this level of pressing couldn't last the whole game so it opened some spaces on the last quarter for France. Props to Mbappe who showed the world he wasn't media made but that he is a real talent of football with a great future. Props to the Argentinian team for this astounding game. We probably saw the greatest WC final in history and a legendary game that will be remembered even in 50 years.
it will be remembered for many things, but mainly cus argentina and messi won. If france won.. it would've been another superpower-team with superstars both in the pitch and on the bench.. a standard win. With Argentina winning it, it's just a better story... a happy ending. Argentina does not have the superstars of france.. not even close. But they had so much passion and they wanted it so much more... they gave their lifes, their spirits and their hearts... as well as their lungs. it just feels.. right with argentina winning it. France superteam can always win the next, or the other one. Argentina won't...
@@akhsdenlew1861 because having the biggest football superstar of the last 20 years along with many others big names doesn't count right? You're talking as if Ecuador won or something...
It could have been an easy fairytale ending for Argentina for 90 mins but Mbappe just kept raising the bar to 120 mins and raised it further to penalty shootout. Truly the best World Cup Final of all times.
mbappe wasnt the only one who pushed Argentina farther. This is a team sport, Mbappe is getting the entire credit because he scored 3 (2 of them were penalties )
i think scaloni was kept being underrated (even by this channel) which kept creating the same pattern: scaloni comes with a plan, which puts the other team on the defense. the argentinian's high morale, running ability, and discipline!!! allowed them a very high tactical flexibility, which was later often countered or matched only by sheer tactical experience and often luck of the other teams. netherlands, croatia and france were all tactically between the best teams of the world cup, just to be eaten one by one by argentina. while the weakness of the team was also clear: often good and or lucky shots/moments destabilized them for just enough to get a second goal too, they kept coming back into the game. i would argue that saudis did argentina a favour: it made them stop and think, while other teams looked them down too much. and scaloni came with a plan. Scaloni always came with a plan. IF this nature of this team could be kept intact, and they actually find a proper playmaking replacement for messi, this argentina will be a tough nut to crack... even going as far as being a contender for 2026 too
It’s funny.. the only time France start to get going is when Argentina switch to being passive and take Di Maria off.. otherwise it could have been 3-0 or 4-0.. France was let more time and space to guys like Theo and mbappe.. before that they were made useless.. Deschanps made some changes yet Messi still created 4 more chances when camavinga came on.. it was only until Theo and Mbappe where given some space that the goals happened.. it was all by Argentina’s change in tactics.. how scalping gets a lower rating I don’t understand..
Deschamps did an incredible job reacting to the match circumstances. The French substitutions brought so much into the game. For me, the key was bringing in Camavinga on the 2nd half -- he eventually got the best of a tired De Paul, and that changed the game completely. Messi and Julian also stopped pressing. Around minute 60 I was hoping Scaloni would bring in some fresh legs (Palacios and Lautaro), or maybe Lisandro Martinez to sit deep with 5 defenders. That could have closed off the game, but oh well, we were born to suffer. Paragraph aside for Mbappe, after minute 80 he was a complete nightmare. This game is absolutely historical, likely one of the best (if not the best) world cup finals ever.
Man france if they really decided to play strong, all lazy , no defense , its like they sold the game away, if france played the way they played the whole tournament 🤣🤣🤣🤧🤧
The Argentine Goal Keeper also deserves a lot of credit, without his great saves, Game could have gone the other way, Congrats to the whole Argentine Squad for pouring their hearts out. Messi finally did it. Congratulations to Argentina!!!!! What a story. Overall what an amazing Final that kept the world on the edge of their seats.
Did you think that the prize for the best goal keeper was give it to the Argentine only because the team won the world cup? He was truly the best goal keeper of the world cup, just as Messi was the best player. Still, the rest of the team play at an excellent level too. Well deserved for us, as I am Argentine too! :)
Deschamps earning a 9 when his team clearly didn't create anything at all until Otamendi gave away a pen is beyond understanding, Scaloni outplayed him.
Deschamps had half of his team poisoned/sick, and another 5 key players injured. The only way Deschamps got outplayed was by the referees for gifting Argentina penalties every match and not red carding Otamendi - the last defender commiting a penalty which is an automatic red card
His refusal to create a midfield and play counterattack is amusing, France has come to that world cup without any offensive (true, not like Griezman) midfielders and center back playing left or right back (the injury to LB opened the door to his brother who is more a natural LB) - Scaloni was invited by the french system, he didn't back down. Last thought, Argentina was utterly dominated in the midfield by Croatia
@@blackbox1024 1- It's hard to pinpoint from outside the severity of the sickness of the players. 2-It's his choice to start the sick ones. We all saw what happened when swiss did it against Portugal for instance. Deschamps was warned about it and decided he prefered playing ill players over his bench guys. 3- Whatever you think happened when it comes to referee it doesn't change what we saw 80-90% of the game.
We saw one of the greatest games in football history. The tactical brilliance of the couches was out standing. Di maria played a huge role for Argentina to go ahead in the first half but it was also Di maria change Didier Deschamps capitalised on as he was substituted Argentina lacked a treat on the attacking faith so France used their full force to equalize the game. That gave as a game which was one for the book.
well... 3 of the 6 goals were penalties.. 2 of them really soft penalties in MY opinion... and the handball was such a rookie mistake to do at the 115th minute mark ...
I survived watching this game being an Argentinean...i can't imagine the players mindset when Mbappe did his magic in 2 minutes. The world felt down. Dibu Martinez save the whole country on that last one and then pk were also really stressful. I feel like recovering from a sweet dream and also a nightmare. Great analysis. Love you Scaloni! VAMOS ARGENTINA.
Mbappé didn't make this goal appear by magic. Coman going very deep paid off, France had more space thanks to tactical adjustments (from both sides). But great finish from Mbappé !
Scaloni subbed off Di Maria and Alvarez and Tagliafico - all the subs failed. France came into the game through subs. Scaloni used penalty takers since he had subbed in Parades and Dybala that helped a lot. France was without its experienced strikers - Giroud and Benzema were missed. Heard France had a stomach bug or something
This game was just too intense for me to focus on the tactical aspect but 4 takeaways: 1. Argentina did very well to stop the central progression from France with their midfield trio that at times was a quartet. 2. Deschamps is a brilliant manager/coach who deserves a lot of respect for his brilliant substitutions at half time. Had he allowed Dembele start the second half, maybe it would’ve been 4-0. 3. Never ever put Mbappe and haaland in the same sentence again. 4. Lionel Andres Messi
Haaland and Mbappe are different types of players and second it’s not like haaland is going to have an amazing international career with Norway like Mbappe does with France
@@escape2nirvana but with this treasure experience, Mbappe talent shines more. Just imagine how much he could improved from this tournament when Erling Haaland is chilling in middle of nowhere.
@@phamthanhhoang9518 I mean what can haaland do?? Like it’s not like he has the international team that can help him gain those World Cup experiences. They are two different to be compared to each other
2 things that has to be mentioned is that not short after Argentina subbed out Di Maria for Acuna which is a defensive substitution, France scored their goals. And there was way less threat from the Argentinan side without Di Maria. 2nd is the Argentinan play style was very energy consuming and Scaloni didn't substitute anyone else until it was actually to late. I'd actually like to see an analysis on the extra time, because both teams looked as if they didn't want a penalty shootout and attacked with all their might. Leaving us to enjoy the most exciting minutes of football I've seen in a long time.
@@Youngesey he was compared to di maria. dimaria is so underrated he made us arrive to the final of the world cup in 2014 and he gave us two goals on the final of 2022... crazy underrated
first half is pretty much Argentina taking control of the game, that 2nd goal by Di Maria, is just a delight to watch especially what happened before that goal. I really enjoyed watching those neat passess that in the end score a goal. well done Argentina
I love how they strengthened their control by receiving a free penalty in the first half, breaking the record of most penalties awarded to any team in any World Cup ever.
How about the extra times? i was shocked to see Argentina in possession and control the game with few changes even though they were tired (they seemed that way at 80s-90s) and France had all these athletic subs come in
I think it was mainly due to an unstructured French side. All subs were to create chances and overload final third not to build-up play. If you think about it Dechamps plan worked quite well it was 50/50 who could of won even if Argentina were the better side. Argentina missed a really good couple of chances but then France missed a clear chance last minutes of the extra time. Could of been 4-3 or 3-4 but went to pen. Both managers were interesting to watch how they react and how they came prepared for the game.
Enzo Fernández and Macallister were excellent stabilising force on mid field in extra time. Paredes for De Paul fresh legs and aggression in pressing helped also
Firstly, we need to applaud both teams for putting on a show worthy of the occasion. What a match👏🏽 This truly was a match that showcased the present vs the future. Of course, it was sad to see France and Mbappé in particular come up short after fighting so hard to stay in the match, but I'm sure all the romantics (myself included) will be happy that Messi finally "completed football". Great tactical analysis, spot on as always👏🏽
Yeah, I would also add Romero, Tagliafico and Enzo Fernandez, I was able to see the final again and the work of these three throughout the game was more than perfect.
Great match by Argentina, the whole team, particularly the midfielders, were impressive today. Some distractions in defense led to the draw, still a deserved win. Deschamps went all-in during extra-time with a broken team with no midfield, leading to scoring chances for both teams. The Dibu did what he does. Maybe more experienced players should have taken France penalties?
That was the downside of Deschamps' subs. He needed to bring on more speed to give France a fighting chance, but it left them with inexperienced penalty takers.
yup, the penalties need to be handled by the experienced. Unlike at the club's matches, the pressure is from the your nation, something very complex to interpret. And when something has just a little patriotism in it, it becomes such immense fear to anyone bearing it.

A club match seems to be casual for them, but when in national team, they are about to bring honor and pride to their nation, their people. When patriotic love kicks in their heart, they are willing to give up any individualism or selfish ideas just to give their all to value the country. Messi once out of his physical prime is known for being very lazy at running. But we have remember how he ran as if he was only 20 years old. Argentinian here. ARG clearly dominated the first 70' of the match, and the only problem was we couldn't score the defining 3-0. Coaches wise, what Deschamps did was outstanding. His team ended up with a chance to win 4-3 when they shoulda lost 3-0. That, along with having the courage to make subs 40' into the first half and seeing that turn a profit, goes to show how well Deschamps read what was going on and how well he reacted to such a tactical thrashing. Actually, imho Scaloni should also have made some subs right after the 1st French pen was awarded. During the ref/VAR discussions and all of that, if Lisandro Martínez or Pezzela had entered, perhaps the 2-2 would not have happened
Substitute camavinga did very well in midfield...his defensive and attacking work rate was insane...and coman attacked wide spaces very well...and mbappe was so clinical....but at the end messi is goat....argentina won....congratulations argentina 🇦🇷
I feel when Scaloni subbed Di Maria, the attacking game changed for Argentina meaning France could start controlling the game more, great game tho! Messi and Mbappe are aliens
DiMaria had been injured and was a surprise starter. Scaloni was ballsy for playing him and even ballsier for playing him on the left. The game changed after DiMaria was taken off. But he was also exhausted
yes, Dimaria's role is very vital, his movements and passing make Argentina's attack more lively and colorful, coupled with his dribbling ability, he succeeded in destroying the French defense in the first half.
I think if Scaloni had brought on Lisandro in the 2nd half in a 3-5-2 it might have brought more defensive solidity which would have seen the game out in 90 mins and prevented the comeback.
Correct. He should have got Lisandro and Paredes to hold the midfield. De Paul was loosing the ball in the midfield, and that put unnecessary pressure.
To me, this was the perfect outcome, Messi scoring both via a penalty and a most needed goal and then mbappe scoring a hattrick. After all these years, Messi deserved this world cup. A beautiful closure to a legendary career. but as one legacy ended, the match outright started a new one. Another moment that really hit the feels. During the awards ceremony when they gave Messi the cloak (usually worn as a traditional formal wear), but man oh man, Messi looked like a King. It just felt different on him, A King leading the charge, finally winning it all, after all these years of struggle.

This is a very accurate and comprehensive analysis. I am an argentinian, and i think team USA can be very competitive and even dangerous in the near future. The key is to teach and encourage kids since 5 or 6 years old to play soccer for fun and in a dayly basis. Argentina having players such as Messi, Alvarez, Di Maria and so on is not a matter of luck. Soccer is played in the streets, squares, improvised pitches called "potreros", all over the country. I hope to see a great performance by the USA in the next WC they are going to host!
French here: so sad to see players like Griezmann, Hernandes, Kounde that are doing a brilliant World Cup only to be really bad at the last game. I am not even talking about Dembele who was even worse. It took one player, Mbappe, to cause trouble to an entire country, just imagine if we had half the team who played a decent game. Lloris like always, amazing in game but absolutely terrible in Penaltys. We will come back stronger, we have an amazing generation coming with Kolo Muani, Thuram, Upamecano, Camavinga and others. The pressing of Argentina was too much for us, well played to them, Di Maria was a MONSTER, not sure why he took him out because from that point we started to have more room and the game switched. Congrats to Messi, this is the icing on the cake for him and his career. We see each other football fan in 2024 for the Euro ;)

Yes... like 7 changes!!!! I am still waiting for the medical report on the head contusion that made the last change possible... and it is easy to win the physical battle when the referee is not calling the fouls... Still, the best team won at the end.
You forgot to mention Coman.. wow what a player he is. He turned the match with his sheer dribbling skills and pace. He is the reason France scored a second goal. Also Scaloni substituted Dimaria which gave Kounde peace he didn't have throughout the match
"if one coach is forced to do two sustitutions in the first 40 min. of the world cup final, it means the other coach got him outsmarted really hard" Scaloni deserve so much credit in this final, one of the best manager of this generation

I think that the mistake Scaloni did was indeed in the substitution of Di Maria, but not because he took him off, but because off who came in. In that phase of the match he should have adapted to a more conservative three center back with Lisandro Martinez instead of Acuna. Even if he was willing to keep the same formation, maybe putting Dybala instead of Di Maria's would have been a better option. In the end in football even with the best tactics it's the small details that win the games, Romero's mistake in the penalty kick, the ball Messi lost in midfield before the second goal and De Paul not covering in defense all the way down, Montiel blocking Mbappe's shot with the hands in front. But also the magical foot of Dibu preventing the forth of France. What a game! Argentina definitely like to suffer! And for me Messi is the GOAT.
That first time was the most dominant display I have seen in a WC final in my lifetime (granted I have only watched 8). But forcing your rival to make two substitutions before half time? Never seen that before! If Argentina lost it would have been so unfair after that display.
Subbing Di Maria off gave France life. I know he can't play 90', but he was a difference maker on offense and defense and would have made the difference in 2014 vs. Germany.
Exactly he was the crucial thing needed in that final match. The complete opposite of what Higuain ended up being. I cannot recover from such a total domination from Argentina but just lacking a clinical finisher. Lukaku was also that to Belgium who weren't even that bad this world cup.
It was a tactical master class from Didier Deschamp. Made mistakes with his initial line up and fixed it... The mistake was using the same tactics he used from the start of the tournament
France could not hold the ball... tactical masterclass of who, Mbappe? it was total domination by the Argentinians, I mean when did France get the first shot on target?
Great Analysis as always dude. One of the best tactical games I've ever watched. This game dethroned my most fav tactical game (ManU vs Liv 1-1 Ole vs Klopp). What a historical game it was 🔥🐐
I think there’s two or three main reasons as to why Argentina almost let France win. 1. Taking off Di Maria- this has got to be the number one reason, his ability and skill was just terrorizing the France right hand side. I bet even with a stronger player they subbed on Di Maria would’ve still caused problems. 2. Allowing pressure to amount - Argentina are the best at having possession and playing from the back, versus the Netherlands showed the whole world that Argentina are vulnerable at the back especially if you have strong, and faster attackers. Also overloading them is a very good idea. 3. Probably just giving away that first penalty, I know France were putting on pressure, but I think Mbappe scoring the first goal really was the reason why France stopped looking sloppy. In all honesty Argentina outplayed them for the first 70 minutes- I think we can all agree that. I think the first half they played may have been the best half they’ve played the whole tournament and the second goal was a perfect personification of the tactics and the performances from the argentine players. But of course France have the youngest, and fastest overran squad in the whole tournament, that is very dangerous. I mean I was so fucking anxious, I literally woke up twice in the middle of the night thinking I had messed the game and that France had beaten Argentina each time I woke up. But now I think I can rest way for the next 6 months knowing Messi finally achieved his fairytale ending that many thought would have been impossible even 1.5 years ago.
France is surprised by an old rival disguised as Argentina. The final of the 2022 World Cup is actually El Classico or the Old traditional rivalry between France and Italy again. Argentina have never performed as a typical South American football team but this time they approached France as Italian because Argentina historically is not Spain but a Spanish-speaking Italian.
For me, removal of Di Maria and not replacing him with a threatening player (Dybala?) was a tactical suicide. It completely shifted the balance in favour of France and Argentina lost the plot. Scoloni tried to "close out" the game by going defensive, but they lost the initiative. Thuram and Mbappe can test the best and Otamendi was going to be found short of class in that match up.
Dybala can't play along with Messi. He is just a small Leo, also, acuña play very well in the match against Croatia. The biggest problem was that France change 4 players and us 1 even when we were pressing hard. They have a lot more fresh legs, and we were getting tired.
There is a thing called "better bench", and few national teams have the same bench as France. Strong and gifted players for spare. Only Brazil and France have this kind of bench, and even Brazil's bench is not as all-arounder as France, since it's mostly a very offensive bench nowadays. Not saying that Argentina's bench is bad, it is not, but their spare players are not all-arounders like the french ones, but they all ahve their own peak attributes, as Paredes and Dybala's penalty potential
Deschamps corrections were made out of emergency, and they worked partly because Argentina paid the price of the high physical demand of their own approach. I think Scaloni completely outsmarted Deschamps, whom just reacted and ultimately ended up putting a team of young, fresh sprinters on the pitch.
You're not taking in consideration that Scaloni actually updated the formation for this game, by using DiMaria on the left side for first time in the cup. That was also one very important tweak from Scaloni just for this match, Yes Deschamps was outstanding with his tactical decisions, but putting Di Maria was a high risk choice, that could bring everything down from one moment to another, that single choice was clever and gave the winning score during the first halftime.
It's easy to make bold substitutions when you are losing 0 2 and the game is ending since you have nothing to lose. To me Scaloni deserves more recognition because he could have played with a line of 5 defenders without taking risks but he chose to control the ball from the start.
Impressive analysis of a complex and changing game. I was very confused over Deschamps' first half subbing (assumed it was Giroud and Dembele's bad form) but you explained that simply and with nuance. Thanks for enlightening me and subbed!
Were Di Maria fir enough to play the full 90 minutes, there would have been no need for the extra time or the penalty shoot out. It was Di Maria who won the match for Argentina.
@Shroom it’s a huge disrespect to football if someone compares dembele to coman. Coman is a much better player, more consistent and at least got an Ucl final goal. Dembele is a fast talented player with no brain which makes him absolutely useless
Great analysis. Intensity plays a key role in these matches as well. Argentina dominated because every time a French player had the ball, Argentinian defenders would rip their legs off to get the ball. France could only attack when Argentina's midfield was exhausted. And don't forget the plus Southamerican players have. The famous "huevo" or "garra", these type of games are what they live for
France's tactics were grotesquely crushed by Lionel Scaloni, he literally showed it by making 2 subs at 40m in the first half. France went to penalties thanks to mbappe. Every player in Argentina was demostrating an incredible superiority over France, Messi was just outstanding, pinning the fact that he scored 3 goals in a world cup final, he demonstrated he's the best with the ball at his feet. The GOAT debate has come to an end. There's no discussion
I don’t understand why people want Messy to be the goat. How do you compare other periods? But on the tactical side, Scaloni really destroyed the system used by Deschamps, it was a sad lesson. He changed the players who put all their energy to change fate, but it was individually done…
@@brocklandersx87 I still put Ronaldo (The Phenomenom) into that equation, while recognizing that he didn't sustain his super high level as long as Messi or Pele. But 15 goals in 3 World Cups is still ahead of Messi's 13 goals that took him 5 World Cups.
@@brocklandersx87 By that logic we should abolish club football altogether. If it's about international football, Pele is ahead of Messi and Maradona combined. If it's about club football, Cristiano is ahead of Messi, Pele, Maradona combined. Messi has 3 champions leagues in 14 years, Ronaldo won 4 in 5 years. Regarding the World cup: 1. Ronaldo for some reason didn't have the whole world including referees, Fifa president, national team players/opponents, media cheering for him to win the World cup, Messi had. 2. Ronaldo didn't had teammates willing to die to win matches, they were busy trying to show individual brilliance in order to get a better club for themselves. 3. Ronaldo didn't get 6 penalties in 7 matches all at 0-0 which is basically starting the match at 1-0 already. 4. Ronaldo comes from a season where he lost his child, which led to a broken relationship with his club and affected his playtime & form. 5. Winning the world cup is more than skills, it requires tremendous amount of luck too, imagine having half of your final opponent's players injured, both of their starting defenders getting poisoned/ill just 2 days before the match, starting each match with a controversially given penalty and much more. Don't forget that Ronaldo has won the EUROs which is as difficult to win as the World Cup if you consider the opponents. Don't b*tch about Morocco beating Belgium, Spain and others this year, i'm talking about 2016 when Belgium was a top 3 team, and so was England, France and the other top teams like Croatia who competed. (I'm not saying EURO is as big as the world cup, it isn't, but in terms of difficulty don't BS me as Argentina literally played Mexico, Australia, Netherlands and an ageing Croatia to reach the final)
Watching this game as an Argentine reminded me a lot to when I, as a kid, watched Terminator 1 for the first time. My feeling when the T-800 rises without the flesh out of the fire was exactly the same when France tied the game. But twice. I'll tell my grandsons I survived watching this game WITHOUT knowing the result in advance.
Deschamps didn't turn the game around, Mbappé did. I think he was lucky that Scaloni made the mistake of bringing on Acuña for Di María, which was a huge mistake because he was now playing with two left backs, and lost all the depth in his game, allowing France to play. But before that, Scaloni totally outdid Deschamps, and I honestly think that Deschamps isn't a great manager, he just puts together the great players that he has.
@@ndjimifeumba1708 Scaloni surprised him probably; Argentina adapted very well to France and forced those changes. I still give Scaloni a higher score, adapting tactics is one aspect of being a coach, and in pre-match strategy Scaloni clearly surpassed Deschamps.
He used his bench but the real change was Argentina getting tired and dropping too deep. Nothing to do with Deschamps and his negative boring football.
This was the best final I've ever witnessed and not just in World Cups. Scaloni was great ( it also helps to have the GOAT on your side) and up until the penalty agains Argentina they made France look like amateurs with no prospect of scoring but then an unbelievable comeback (Mbappe is a goal poaching savage) and chances left and right...Extra time goals from Messi and Mbappe, crazy save by Lloris and even a crazier save by Martinez..all the way to the shootout and then, the GOAT, Lionel Messi Finally gets what he's owed, the greatest trophy this sport can offer him. What a game
The scary part is after leading Argentinian players seems to get complacent...maybe is the effect of high intensity from the get go that take tolls on the stamina and concentration levels...often we see them misplaced the pass or got caught under pressure...like they forget how to kill the game properly...that corner side wasting time after they lead 3-2 was unnecessary because it was too early
Really? what I saw was something very different. There were like 5 fouls made from France in a row that the referee didnt saw, and that made a world of difference. There you have the lack of intensity... I call that cheating, but there were some many of those bad calls during the game, for both sides, that eventually at the end, the best team won.
Everyone should appreciate Otamendi to make this brilliant Argentinian game into an exciting game and allow Mbappe to cut loose and shine, or else everyone would have ended up praising only Argentina. Why was Lisandro Martinez not used. He saved match against Australia with the tackle of world cup as it did it in an angle with the raised studs but never will come and touch the striker with breath taking timing.
The best final including all sports. I thought I was going to have a heart attack for real. At the end I cried. I’ve always been a fan of Argentinian futbol, but I’m Puerto Rican and I cried at the end. What a match!

at the 70th minute mark, changes SHOULD'VE been done.
Players were too tired and french had 4-5 fresh lungs.

he storm the french weakness

I loved the pass by Mac Allister for Di Maria, my world what a pass! The composure of Mac, and the weighting of that pass at this stage, just wow!
Huge mistake by Scaloni when he substituted Di Maria too early , it could cost him the World Cup !

I thought Di Maria was man of the match: he ignited his entire side, an incredible player, vastly underrated.

The agenda does not allow him to win MoTM.
I fail to understand it honestly, the match in regular + extra time ends in a 3-3 draw.
1. Messi scores a gifted penalty and an open net tap in from 4m away and gets MoTM award.
2. Mbappe levels from 2-0, scores a difficult volley, wents on to scoring a hattrick in a fkin WC final and still doesn't get MoTM.

no, the debate about whether Messi or Ronaldo were the GOAT was going on for nearly 18 years, the WC was the ultimate prize to cement their status.
Yeah. Those penalties they conceded were unnecessary.
But what impressed me is, how argentina come back after such knockouts. In both games they experienced a equaliser and after a shock period they played again very well with big chances. Totally a mental powerhouse

Those first 80 or so minutes was a Argentina masterclass. What a game we got after that though. Probably the best WC final in decades.

I came into the match expecting France to dominate on the offensive end to be completely honest.
I mean... France went out to the second half still asleep
At the end, Argentina played a better game and that’s why they won.

i think scaloni was kept being underrated (even by this channel) which kept creating the same pattern: scaloni comes with a plan, which puts the other team on the defense. the argentinian's high morale, running ability, and discipline!!! allowed them a very high tactical flexibility, which was later often countered or matched only by sheer tactical experience and often luck of the other teams. netherlands, croatia and france were all tactically between the best teams of the world cup, just to be eaten one by one by argentina. while the weakness of the team was also clear: often good and or lucky shots/moments destabilized them for just enough to get a second goal too, they kept coming back into the game. i would argue that saudis did argentina a favour: it made them stop and think, while other teams looked them down too much. and scaloni came with a plan. Scaloni always came with a plan. Deschanps made some changes yet Messi still created 4 more chances when camavinga came on.. it was only until Theo and Mbappe where given some space that the goals happened.. it was all by Argentina’s change in tactics.. how scalping gets a lower rating I don’t understand..
Anulo mufa
The entire tournament Argentina's biggest obstacle was themselves.

Especially the save that maintained 3-3 keeping Argentina Alive
Did you think that the prize for the best goal keeper was give it to the Argentine only because the team won the world cup? Such a great match from 2 top notch world class players, thank you so much Messi for those great memories.
The system of France is totally wrong. you can't compensate with individual brilliance, you need more.
@@blackbox1024 1- It's hard to pinpoint from outside the severity of the sickness of the players.

I was surprised how early ARG were pressing the Mids, and running off the wings. Definitely did not expect more than 3 goals happening this game.

No way you gave 9 for Deschamps, it was the brilliance of mbappe's second goal that kept them alive but tactically scaloni was outstanding
Correct! it's mystifying.
@@brendonbuthello There you are right

The greatest game ever between GOAT and King of new era.
This game was just too intense for me to focus on the tactical aspect but 4 takeaways:
Mbappe and Haaland.
They are two different to be compared to each other
Agree with everything except number 3. Haaland is a monster who, like Gareth Bale, has the misfortune of playing for a weak national team.

I love how they strengthened their control by receiving a free penalty in the first half, breaking the record of most penalties awarded to any team in any World Cup ever.
@@pozsoz I love how that penalty was a properly given and how much butthurt there is about it.
Paredes for De Paul fresh legs and aggression in pressing helped also
@@chopsnz88 bringing In Montiel helped too

@@ivanferreira655 why did experienced Otamendi made the silly mistake that led to the PK??
argentinas first half was just magic!!!
@@quangtrungbui675 yeah i really can’t imagine what those penalty takers from both teams were going through. emi martinez on the other hand seems like he thrives in these moments.

@@shingrandfather when we enjoy the matches like these, we need to know that this isn't just a normal match, this is the battle of the chads, between the real men. When patriotic love kicks in their heart, they are willing to give up any individualism or selfish ideas just to give their all to value the country.

@@vanguard8889 france start to life after di maria subbed out and acuna cant provide quality attacking like di maria.

The best World Cup Final of my lifetime for sure, purely epic.

Indeed, both whole squad and coaches really make impact in this amazing match not just brilliance from Messi and Mbappe. Tactical tweaks, players shifting role, and among other things is part of creating one of the most football entertaining event. Bravo!👏

Yes... like 7 changes!!!! I am still waiting for the medical report on the head contusion that made the last change possible... and it is easy to win the physical battle when the referee is not calling the fouls... Still, the best team won at the end.
I couldn't believe how long France went without a single shot. Thank you for your explanations
Super final. France missed Benzema, Pogba, and Kante' and still nearly pulled it off. Hats off to Argentina for keeping their nerve.
Argentina was about to go 3-0 when a long shot with a mistake from the defender brings france back to the game. Scaloni won the tactical match by far.

Happy for you you are amazing good work I wish you all the very best may the good lord keep you all in the best of health ❤❤❤❤❤❤

One of the best tactical games I've ever watched. This game dethroned my most fav tactical game (ManU vs Liv 1-1 Ole vs Klopp).
What a historical game it was 🔥🐐
Best World cup in years. This was Messi passing the torche to Mbappe in a way. I still can't hold my excitement.
Muy de acuerdo.
That is one of the first things he said
It's easy to make bold substitutions when you are losing 0 2 and the game is ending since you have nothing to lose.
Thanks for enlightening me and subbed!
argentina just had so much chemistry and was willing to work for each other.
Were Di Maria fir enough to play the full 90 minutes, there would have been no need for the extra time or the penalty shoot out.
It was Di Maria who won the match for Argentina.
DiMaria played one of this best games ever. He made Dembele cry
Dembele should never ever be allowed anywhere close to a France NT match. Coman is and always been miles better.
@Shroom it’s a huge disrespect to football if someone compares dembele to coman. Coman is a much better player, more consistent and at least got an Ucl final goal. Dembele is a fast talented player with no brain which makes him absolutely useless
Some of the details in this game was so perfect that I, not really interested in football, got tears in my eyes.
Great analysis. Intensity plays a key role in these matches as well. Argentina dominated because every time a French player had the ball, Argentinian defenders would rip their legs off to get the ball. France could only attack when Argentina's midfield was exhausted. And don't forget the plus Southamerican players have. The famous "huevo" or "garra", these type of games are what they live for
Defently the most amazing game of Chess I have ever witnessed on the pitch. Bravo Argentina.

Messi has 3 champions leagues in 14 years, Ronaldo won 4 in 5 years.
Regarding the World cup:

Won't be surprised if both of them win the Champions League Trophy this season.
Great tactical decisions by Deschamps. Excellent use of his authority as a coach. Truly determined. Chapó.
Really? When the team is dominated for 75% of the first 90 mn...

What a game
I was awestruck with the double substitutions. Giroud beig withdrawn.. But it was brilliance at its best.
What a game.
Di María is so underrated. Key player to win the match!! Amazing game
Argentina started toying with France instead of trying to kill the game 4-0, this attitude in the 2nd half lead to the equalization.
We definitely seem to have an issue with creating opportunities instead of scoring goals
