In 2021 Pep Guardiola lost the Champions League Final, and many people criticized him for his selection of the team, and how it was Man City's biggest chance to win the UCL after their great season domestically (PL, Carabao Cup) but they threw it away, and how Pep Guardiola was a failure at Manchester City and an overrated manager despite his success domestically. In 2023, Pep Guardiola proved them wrong by not only winning domestically (PL, FA Cup) with a very consistent team selection in a majority of the matches, including most of the big ones, but he also won the Champions League as well (a treble), for the first time in Manchester City's History. He may have spent a lot of money, but he has lots of trophies to show for it, which proves his ambition as a serial winner. Greatest. Manager. Ever.

We have seen so many mistakes from the opponent because of Silva's pressing ability and not only that with Silva we have extra man in defense because he covers everywhere on the pitch. Pep just need to unlock his another pressing talent known as Julian Alvarez. Hope next season we will see Alvarez in many games.

For me , the single most important tactical change we made all season was the decision to start Grealish, and make him an integral part of the buildup. His ability to maintain possession, win fouls, and carry the ball forward made him the absolute dream outlet for expansion during transition. Stones and the system of defending in one shape and then attacking in another is only possible, or at least useful, when we have players like Grealish, Bernardo, and Mahrez who are such brilliant ball handlers that it lets us get settled. You could see our patterns of play shift into fullback --> midfielder ---> winger ---> midfielder ----> goal, with the wingers carrying the ball forward and constantly driving inside. Foden was simply incapable of driving inside off the left, or shielding effectively towards the line because he's left footed, and putting Grealish in completely revolutionized our comfortability in this new system, and allowed us to maintain dominance. Not to mention his chance creation, defensive work rate, and amazing positional play to spread the field, he has been such a brilliant player. For me, he is second to Rodri in this squad in terms of names on the team sheet, because he is the only man in the team that can do the job he does, and it is the backbone of making this system function.

The qay city palyed later this season was all about possession and positional play. Had, grealish been an ordinary player, pep wouldn't have played him come what may. Walker was the a key when the opponent had a faster player like Sane Vinicius and more but against inter it was more physical and player like akandji and Nathan ake are more physical and adapted to this inter team so that is why it was no need for walker to start because they had 3 centers back playing and they did it very well

Nice recall of the attempt to implement that CB going into midfield role from a few years back. Shows that Pep has been working on this for some time but the team maybe just wasn't ready back then. I remember Stones starting a couple games as the 6 the year before the Rodri transfer and to put it mildly. He was awful. Shows Pep has been working with Stones for some time to prepare him to play this role.

If we measure history by track record, maybe he's not yet one. On the other hand, if we qualify a manager properly (track record + influence on the game), Guardiola is already the best manager of all time.
A manager who has changed the way football is played and understood since his time at Barcelona, who constantly shows his tactical mastery, and who has an enviable track record in such a short time. Simply a legend of the bench.

Great analysis and recap of the season, although if I may add an incredible important aspect that you did not mention: With Stones as a pivot, City could maintain possession for prolonged periods of time dangerously close to their own goal, daring and baiting teams into pressing them only for Ederson to attempt to go long to find either the wingers in advanced positions or even Haaland who acted like a Giroud-like target man, effectively bypassing 2/3 of the opposing team players. You can see this part of their tactic at work to devastating effects vs Arsenal and even Bayern at the Etihad last season. This I believe was influenced by De Zerbi’s Brighton, and could not have worked without Ederson’s gift of pinpoint distribution.

Surely an inverting fullback gives you more defensive solidity as they can block off the wide pass from the center as well as defend centrally while also shuffling back into the back 4 at the perfect pace.
Meanwhile centre-backs will leave a midfield gap when transitioning into the back 4 as the back 3 can't cover for their absence.
Usually, the fullback doesn't have to be central and out wide at the same time and you'd always rather sacrifice the flanks than the center.
That is the weakness in this system

Great points and love Pep, but it seems like he had forgotten how richly he was rewarded in the treble season for his ability to adapt his back line when compared to this most recent one. As a City fan, it is tragic to see Pep regress , again, when compared to the treble season. Still love him, but def disappointed and can’t get over how he refused to adapt his suicidally high back line to different opponents. Remember, he played a flat back 4 against RM away and then a more attacking posture at home with a back 3 and Stones inverting in the treble season while this past season, he played a back 2 and wingbacks against the best counter attacking team in the world and is it any wonder that 3:4 total goals RM scored against City were in the counter down the right flank?
