Japan pulled off a massive World Cup shock by beating tournament favourites Spain 2-1, only days after beating highly rated Germany, and even losing to a thoroughly unimpressive Costa Rica.
In this video, JJ Bull analyses the tactics and game plan which helped Japan qualify for the knockout rounds of the World Cup.

If JJ tells me Japan's good enough to win the World Cup, then I believe Japan's good enough to win the World Cup. Because of JJ's energy and conviction. That's enough for me.
*Edit post Croatia: Ah well, it's not meant to be. But still, Japan did us Asians proud, and they did justice to JJ's belief and conviction.
@Shahjahon Saidmurodov If they're good enough to beat Germany and Spain in groups, they're good enough to beat anyone in knockouts. If they're good enough to beat anyone, they can win the World Cup.
@@thatissomeBS only if they keep playing against strong team 🤣🤣
@@shimarin1647 Luckily for them, the teams only get better from here on out.
JJ word is logic
I'd say his football knowledge helps reinforce the idea he's right more than just the energy
Moriyasu has been carefully plotting a 16-man strategy for every single contest (which makes sense given how deep the Japan NT is these days). His plans entail the use of all five subs, and he has sketched out the scenarios. These second-half changes are all part of Japan's basic strategy, which is to use the second-half substitutions to alter the shape of the contest and try to disrupt the opponent's play at the critical point in the contest. By using pressing players up front like Maeda and Ito in the starting lineup, and running at the ball, they try to wear out the defenders and midfielders with constant running. Then in the second half you bring on the likes of Mitoma, Minamino and Asano, who can run at the defenders, and take advantage of their tired legs, and you shift to a new formation and style of play. The change, when it is made, is intended to disrupt the other team's play and they are forced to make adjustments they might not want to make.
The problem has been that Japan is not holding the ball up in midfield, when they have possession. For the entire first half [both Germany and Spain contests] Japan's possession was broken up before it reached the attack line. On this point I think Kubo is a huge liability. He just cant hold the ball under pressure. Id give Soma another chance (he looked OK against Costa Rica]. You need to have wide midfielders who can carry the ball in midfield and not just get shoved off it. Ideally, Japan wants to get to half time at 0-0 (or perhaps 1-1). Failure to control possession in the first half was the reason why that strategy did not work
Anyway, the point is that Moriyasu's philosophy is to let the opponent develop a certain style and mindset, as well as (hopefully) use up a lot of energy, in the first half. Then Moriyasu makes his five changes, and try to win the game in the second half. That was the game plan from the start This is a basic part of Moriyasu's philosophy, so you can expect to see substitutes continue to play an important role in matches going forward.
Been nice to see them do well. Going in to the tournament i saw them as a technically solid with a depth of good players but no one incredible. Basically a team where the system and tactics will be everything. I was sad to see Germany and Spain in their group but they managed it somehow
Honestly in the best way possible, this model feels representative of Japans post war economic miracle - using alternative tactics non-dependent on the typical strategy of the ‘traditional’ powers to go through and find openings. Maybe a lazy comparison but the more I understand, the less I understand. Just fun and underestimated football
This is why Moriyasu should have brought Kyogo Furuhashi. He has pace and really good control of the ball. Kubo is fantastic for a possession heavy team but not for the way Japan plays.
@@tito.senpai_ I just assumed Kyogo was injured. He's as valuable to Celtic as Maeda, and it makes sense to take him for his ball skills and club connection. Kubo has been disappointing in the world cup so far, and it seems like Kyogo might have been the way to go
@@markf5220 yeah everyone wash shocked when he wasn't selected. Kubo, for better or worse, has a very Spanish style of play, which doesn't suit the counter attacking style of play Japan has
I think most people didn’t see that Japan absolutely destroyed a high-pressing US team with their transition in a friendly before the World Cup. They should be taken seriously.
US is a bad team
US can't even beat Wales
That's why they failed against smaller team.. the less qualities in the opponents team the harder it was for them to break bcs this Japan doesn't want to control the game they want to play counter attacking football tiring opponents but smaller team doesn't took that kind of risk unlike bigger team who depends on their high pressing controlling possession which this japan team could took advantage of
The US will be friendly send home in a day 😏
@@1607Adi_Manz but to be honest the USA from matchday 2 and 3 looked like a much better team than they were in matchday 1.

Japan shows how far you can come with an unbreakable spine and a bottomless tank of resilience. Whatever happens now, Japan can truly be proud of this team.
For us Asjan, it was a surprise but Japan continue their excellent WC form. They were excellent at Russia, only to be narrowly beaten by a peak Belgium team( their peak golden generation) in the last minute of extra time.
Japanese have superb fighting spirit. They worked very very hard.
today was the craziest day of football i have experienced in my adult life. absolutely wild.
Japan really have taken 'Never give up' to a whole new level.
stamina, energy, and physicality. those three are why japan, south korea, saudi arabia, and australia always have the upper hand against pretty much all asia nation in football (my country cant even preserve consistency for 90 minutes, but we're progressing). but this time, especially japan, has upgraded all of 3 towards next level. best of luck!
And lots of help from the referees.
@@bighands69 Thank god, you are not the referee
So it's not for you to decide 🙃
Al Shahrani getting injured really took an effect on Saudi Arabia. Otherwise I think they would've had a chance to be the 4th Asian team to qualify for the knockout stages. But Asia really improved over the years. Last time, it was only Japan in the knockout stages
The fact that Japan defeated Spain without Minamino, Furuhashi and Hatate is incredible!!
Without Tomiyasu too for the major part. He’ll definitely start vs Croatia given Itakura is suspended
To be fair, furuhashi and Hatate were always going to be bench players considering the other players quality on paper.
All Asia teams select players based on team chemistry.
While individual talent is impressive, football is a team sport at heart.
I don't think any of them are worthy of being in the starting xi. Maybe Furuhashi but still questionable since his playstyle doesn't match with Japan
I've always thought substitutions in football have a lot of unexplored potential (especially with 5 subs now), it's nice to see a manager directly incorporating them into their game plan from the outset.
I love that substitutions in football becoming like a sideboard.
That would make for a fun strat
True, meanwhile German Coach still playing favourites... And Germany pretending to be world cup winner.

Crazy how I think Spain broke the record for most passes Vs Costa Rica with 1045 passes and 18% possession for CR and beat them 7-0,
Whilst they against Japan they had identical stat and actually more passes 1058 and JP had lower possession 17%, but this time a completely different result losing 2-1. I know Japan start to defend after leading but they were still getting dominated in passes before that.
Crazy how I thought 1000+ passes was embarrassing stat for Costa Rica but Japan won despite that.
Costa Rica tried to play the same tactic as Japan did, but defense was very sloppy unlike Japan's which was airtight. They tried to do the same against Germany, but again, not tight enough, otherwise they just might have gotten away with a victory.
It is amazing what can happen when the referee is also playing for the japanese.

Great analysis👍It lines up with the Japan team cam episodes where coach Moriyasu is talking to the team pre match and tells them "In the first half 0-0 is fine, even if we're down 1-0 it's fine, our plan does not change so don't become nervous when we are in that position!"
I love that he always shows them an inspirational video of what it means for them to be at the World Cup, and what it means for all the supporters cheering them on back home and around the world right before they leave for the stadium🙏🗾 Ganbare Nippon!!!
Spain was failing in task of surpassing Japan's high pressure thus creating dangerous situations with the ball possession between the goalkeeper and the defensive line. The same thing happened with Germany. For some reason Spain never kicks a long ball to stay out of this trouble, there is a dogma of always playing the ball with short passes which can be really dangerous.
Yes...this.
Japan basically took advantage of Spain's over ambition towards controlling the game and keeping possession
As an Indian....Japan is our inspiration....we will someday play in the World Cup for sure!!
You are not playing world cup in million years, stick to hockey and cricket.
You must love corruption in india then.
nope with the amount of corruption in india its just not happening

Feeling so proud 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
Moriyasu masterclass! Used the same gameplan for both Spain and Germany and it worked. Kept the score tight in the first half, then brung on the super subs for the sucker punches! Unbelievable results!
18% possession bloody hell 18
Thanks for your good works, advice and enlightment. Blessings
Everyone’s gonna sit deep and play like Costa Rica against Japan now
kaoru mitoma might become one of the greatest wingers of all time
Doan is pronunced like "dough-ahn" rather than "doo-ahn". I imagine you'll be saying his name a couple more times during this world cup, so just to help :)
Spot on - love JJ and he really does his homework but I’ve been gritting my teeth the last couple of vids!
I think it's his Scottish accent. Dough always sounds like doo.
I think the main reason behind their lose was the substitution of Azpilicueta. He was the one commanding the defense line, when to push forward, when to return, when to not sit too deep, etc. Also not to mention that he's the best at moral-lifting shithorsery. But I agree with the decision (to sub him off) though, Dave's not young anymore, and Spain definitely needs him so they don't want to risk some injury in a game they literally can throw. Subbing him off was a logical decision.
It didn't go out if tech says its didn't. No more controversial than hundreds of really tight offsides.
Like the Croatia one 4 hours earlier.
Japan's football has Been upgraded everytime they played world cups. And unlike most countries, They consider their mistakes and plan a new strategy, it looks like it worked. However Croatia don't play like the big teams, possesion ball game so the Japanese needs to come out with another strategy.
He’s the best. Chill and intelligent personality
The coach definitely deserves coach of the tournament!
Japan is a team that plays like a hive! They are all little robots that know very well what to do in most situations. A pleasant surprise!
Good players playing system football. It means they'll get punted if they play an incredible team who make few mistakes but still beautiful to see
@@ACE360xgroup alone, they’ve bested promising Germany and Spain sides, admittedly both “in transition” sides, but both nonetheless traditional powerhouses/ stalwarts in the later stages of this competition. 🗾🗾🗾 all the way I say

Great video. Seemed like JJ was being pressured to make a snappy video that came in under 9 miuntes
Are Japan planning all their 5 substitutes before matches bc it seems genuinely like their manager pulled off two absolute masterclasses
Actually, yes. It's actually one of their primary tactics to inject energy in the second half. They destroyed USA in a friendly that way too.
Thats what impressive the most, 99% teams play the best 11 first, Japan put the most energetic to enter on 2nd half, very strategic
It's just like in Brazil in 2014, south American teams were performing and getting results, this year It's the Arab and Asian teams who are making the noise
We live in a day that Japan is the dark horse in a world cup.
Imagine that.
Moriyasu's tactics are deadly when teams are expected to beat Japan. Sadly, this applies to Croatia, as well. Two of the 3 teams I'm rooting for at every World Cup have to clash so soon. Spain's loss is a second warning shot to all teams who think passing the ball a lot leads to victory. A tired Modrić and Perišić are potential weaknesses.
Japan have been dependent on teams attacking and leaving behind weak defences for counterattacking goals. The Croats don't attack enough for that to work as a reliable strategy. Dalic sets Croatia up not to concede, whether that's good or bad, and they haven't really been caught on the counter the way Spain and Germany have.
@@kjn3350 Croatia was super defensive against France in the League of Nations. I don't think that level of defensively oriented play will happen on Monday. But I do expect a deeper D-line. A faster CB to partner Gvardiol is necessary if things get lively during the game.
@@kjn3350 there is no way croatia are going to set themselves up in a defensive manner, they will still attack and yeah might fall into japans hands.
Go Japan! 🇯🇵👏
Congratulations to Croatia from Japan!! All teams were very tough, experienced, well-organized opponents. I think Japan learned a lot from this WC. Thank you!
The Costa Rica game just shows they’re missing someone with Reo Hatate’s qualities. I get he doesn’t work with the style of play against the likes of Germany and Spain but against a defensive team he would help them massively
Costa Rica was also missing a special component that Japan had which was official help on the field to get them goals that were not goals.

Im living in Tokyo and us and our friends made an improvised sports bar out of a cheap projector and a bed sheet behind the DJ decks for the World Cup. We had a good opening game for the England Iran game… But after the Costa Rica Japan game, (the second game with the sheet), nobody expected this at all. The Spain Japan game was 4am and most of us, Japanese and foreign, had written the team off and had jobs to do, so we didn’t even show it… but funny things can happen in football, and it was a fun train ride to work this morning. I think Japan will beat Croatia too. But do you think we should watch the game with the sheet for the Croatia game, or will that curse the team? Do you think it’s a sheet idea?
Tiki taka is getting outdated. 400 passes up to 80% possession still lose. This is not league games. This is life or death scenario. Congratulations to Japan for being brave and never say die attitude. Also worthy mentioned are Morocco.
JJ describes football like a character off interdimentional cable from rick and morty 😂
The Japanese play well against teams with high lines; strategic pressing, great counter-pressing and playing balls over defensive lines. Can they play well against a rather rigid and slow team like Croatia? And Gvordiol looks so solid in defence, one of the most impressive players this tournament.
