      The idea was to press because Croatia lacked pace, let’s not kid our selves here Croatia played an incredible match but they were waiting for a miracle, and they got it. I disagree with Tites tactics in this game, but understand his choice.

      They had a free-kick and keeping possession high up the pitch is actually the best way to keep a narrow lead. It just didn't work. But it's the right thing to do. Maybe they weren't prepared enough for a counter, though.

    Juranović played match of his life today, Livaković brilliant saves once more, Modrić I lost words for him, he's best midfielder I've ever seen and to be doing all this at 37 years old is beyond ridiculous, but again I feel Brozović is unsung hero of this team, that man is everywhere on the pitch and it seems like he could run for another 120 minutes. Brazil had the flair, but Croatia had the grit. Took a special goal for Brazil to edge out ahead, and to come back from that deficit to equalize with just minutes on the clock took guts. This Croatian team never stopped running, never gave up, and had their fair share of chances to score. When the game went beyond extra time, it was game over for Brazil; losing on penalties first time since 1986.

Modric has known the horrors of life and treats every day spent representing his country as a privilege, as something he might have never experienced at all in his life. De Bruyne treats international duty as a drain on usual life, a distraction from his comfort zone.

Croatia have always played as a unified team of 11, never disjointed or unorganized, and involving every player on the field. Well done Croatia!

  • @assadmohamed7683
    @assadmohamed7683 2 года назад +45

    I think the Brazil Manager got this one really badly wrong:
    1. Brazil basically setting up in 424 against one of the best midfield trios of any team. Not even a genius take to suggest taking off a forward for another midfielder to restore some balance. Instead he went like for like with his subs, and arguably took off the better players in those positions for worse.
    2. Brazil scored a great goal, all they needed to do was hold on. Instead they went for it and gambled, got caught out and were done in transition. If they kept their shape the goal probably doesn’t happen, heck there’s even an argument to bringing on Fabinho, with 2 minutes left you have to see it out not go for it. They brought it upon themselves regardless of the lucky nature of the deflection.
    3. The order of the pen takers, Neymar is the best taker in the team, he should be going first all day. First penalty goes in it’s a psychological relief, at the point in the game, Croatia had the mental edge and nothing was done to swing that momentum back.
    All in all, all 3 of these things were avoidable. I think they deserved to go out, they got arrogant thinking they won the game and got stung late and couldn’t recover. I’m not just saying this because Croatia won, but I was so certain they would win the shoot-out. Onwards and upwards, underestimate Croatia at your own peril.

    @soccerjames500 2 года назад +35

    Danilo came inside to play as a double pivot alongside Casemiro in this match, whereas he would always get high and wide earlier in the tournament. I think the goal was to get Vinny isolated more in 1v1 on the outside, but Brazil rarely found him.

    • @pahakuutti
      @pahakuutti 2 года назад +5

      They were trying to isolate Juranovic because he was supposed to be the weak link of this Croatia side. Thought so too before this game and then he pulls a MOM performance out of nowhere. The problem ingame tho was Tite allowing Croatia to win the midfield with a 3 v 2 and all of those 3 players are top players too.
      So Brazil couldn't penetrate from the middle and then Juranovic played great on the wing. Sosa on the other side was partly at fault for the goal, and wasn't so great. But then again he was forced to defend more.
      Vini and Neymar occasionally allowed Juranovic to advance too high up without tracking back and that's one of the reasons he looked so good. I'm not entirely convinced he is as good a defender as he looked today. But take nothing away from a brilliant performance.

    Juranovic and Livaković both played brilliantly. Brazil struggled to do anything on the right. Dalic's defensive tactics worked (though Orsic was responsible for the goal, despite never being picked) against a midfieldless Brazil. Most of Brazil's chances came at an extreme angle, as well - even the goal was at an angle - and there was very little successful play down the middle or in the air. The Brazilians mainly produced chances by overloads on the side and then cross it in - despite their individual abilities and their reputation, the Brazilians actually failed to produce much flair. It was standard getting past your man and generally simple passes around the defence, though Vinicius's chance and the Brazil goal were admittedly very skillful. The Croats, on the other hand, had some incredible passing, incredible movement of the ball, but perhaps lacked the directness they needed and players capable of scoring the few chances they got. It was that flairful passing that helped keep possession under a sometimes intense Brazil press. The lack of space between the two defensive lines also meant that the Brazilians often had to get through not one or two but three or four players to get through on goal, and that's why they had much more success on the wing than down the middle. You can also see that when the Brazilians did try to go down the middle Gvardiol and Lovren made many interceptions.
    Brazil's goal was the same as Richarlison's against South Korea, and mainly relied on a little moment of disorganisation (and players trying to avoid giving away a penalty) and the fact that Livaković does not instinctively come out. Croatia's goal was a little different to how it was described. The right-back was out of position and following Petkovic, leaving Orsic with space on the wing. As the cross came, he moved towards Orsic, while Petkovic dropped back to meet it, and Thiago Silva turned around too late, moving into position to block the shot. Marquinhos came to prevent the shot, was a little late and the ball deflected off him and into the net. The main problem was that the RB didn't follow Orsic, did nothing to slow him down, and then when the cross came and he could have gotten in Petkovic's way he had just noticed Orsic and was moving towards him. Also, it was the 116th minute, so they were all a little fatigued. They were actually all up there in order to play the ball around the Croatia box and keep possession, which is really what you should be doing at such a time, but it backfired, perhaps because they were all celebrating. I'll admit, I also thought Brazil had won.
    So it's not entirely luck Croatia won, even though the stats imply they couldn't attack. It was mainly that Croatia's attack was poor and they played a cautious game, while Brazil essentially sat back for the first half, played rougher, dived more and put everything they could into attack once they got over the midfield issues.

    • @banmate6
      @banmate6 2 года назад

      This is some of the best analysis on this game and Croatia in general I read in a social media comments. You know football. And hit the nail on the head that this Croatia team ultimately must play to what a great GK, great defense, great midfield, and poor attacking core can produce.
      I'm Croatian too and wish we could be more ambitious in the attack. We selectively attack, but our forwards cannot help much in producing quality chances, as well as taking the few we typically get. Hence the low shot on target to shots ratio or simply a lower # of shots.
      It's ironic that Orsic and Petkovic combined to produce the goal to tie Brazil and set up penalties. They're not that good but dutifully played within a system to achieve all this. This was not luck nor negative football, but tactical discipline and execution...backed by some great Croatian defensive and midfield players like Kovacic, Brozovic, Modric, Gvaridiol, Juranovic, and Co.
      I hope we can resume creating good forwards. Maybe Roko Simic? Croatia seem to have a solid pipeline across generations.

    I think this happened because of two things:
    - lack of composure and a cold head
    - Tite ended up taking off Brazil's best players (Militão was amazing, Vini Jr. could end a match in one play); and choosing the wrong subs (Fred in while you can have Fabinho to slow down a match and win some tackles, Rodrygo was ok but we'd rather have him than Antony).

  • @brunomonteiro7636
    @brunomonteiro7636 2 года назад +5

    One thing missing from the explanation, in my opinion: Fred substituted Paquetá in the beginning of extra time. He is, by tradition, a much more defensive midfielder. With Casemiro and Fred together Tite hoped Brazil could control a little bit more of the midfield (exacly where Croatia dominated). HOWEVER, even AFTER Brazil scored its 1st goal, Fred tried an upfield play and lost the ball -- a very irresponsible move... That's when Modric wins the dispute with Casemiro and makes a long pass to Kovacic :(

Duas copas, nenhuma semifinal, isso é uma vergonha, uma equipe com basicamente a melhor qualidade individual da copa perdeu erros básicos. Para os croatas, parabéns! There was a lot of politics in the team, so chances are there would be a few too many average Serbs, Bosnians, Slovenians, Montenegrins, Macedonians and Kosovars involved in this Croatian team. Let's be honest, only Vlahovic and Mitrovic would be able to make the starting 11. Maybe Milinkovic-Savic and Ademi off the bench. And I guess Oblak, but Yugoslav football is not quite up to the standard of Croatian football. Plus, they probably wouldn't have the same spirit as this Croatia team.

      Their managers sucks, their tactics are outdated and their effort is negligent. Proof of this, besides the world cups I the last 20 odd years is the hostility in which Portuguese managers are treated in Brazil even though they just win everything now. It serves Brazil right, but I think they won't learn the lesson this time either. Social media is full of bitter Brazilians claiming the game was fixed.

    Can't exactly blame Casemiro in this condition. It's the choice of the team to go 4-2-3-1 that worked like a 3-2-5 with 1 of the midfield (Fred) working also as an offensive-oriented midfielder. If Casemiro had chosen to run back, it would be 4v6 with Modric standing just outside the box (behind the 2 guys that ran inside the box). That is an even deadlier situation.

    I don't understand what the big fuss is about. Brazil are horrible, they only played well against South Korea. Croatia on the other hand played well in all of their games, not so much offensively but definitely defensively. I see people talking about Brazil winning the WC 5 times, so what? That was over 20 years ago, Croatia made it to the final of the last WC, they have more experience than Brazil in knock-out games. Croatia played better, except for a few spells, Brazil looked very lazy out there, as they did in the group games. Brazil is nothing in the WC now, history doesn't matter, so it's good to see the better team win the game.
