The Z 5 has a great sensor it's just Front side illuminated so produces a little more noise at higher ISO's. I would say the Z5 offers by far the best image quality of any "entry level" full frame camera. It's the quiet leader of that category for beautiful stills.
Hi John, the 24-120 is a fantastic lens, I sold my 24-200 to help finance the purchase of the 24-120 and I am so glad I did, the 24-200 is a great lens for walkabout photography and everyday and definitely for landscape. But the 24-120 is definitely an upgrade on it. I shoot with the Z9 and your comment regarding image quality is true only in the sense that I could blow my pictures up larger because of the increase in megapixels. You have some stunning shots with this lens John, no wonder you're so happy with it, keep up the good work mate.
Oh wow, the Z9 is amazing and really glad to hear that it’s still a great lens. I really appreciate your kind works and like my images. I will keep them coming 📸
Hi John thanks for a great video! The 24-120mm has been my favorite go to lens since I purchased it. I had the 24-70mm f4 kit lens that came with my Z6ll and have not used it since I got the 24-120mm. Even though the 24-70 is smaller and lighter and a very good lens I just can't bring myself to use it over the 24-120mm. I love the minimum focusing distance and wonderful bokeh it produces. It's one of the best lenses I have owned. I look forward to watching more of your videos, keep them coming.
Thank you for the comments and supporting me and my work. I’m glad you like the lens, the quality of Nikons S line products is next level. I forgot to mention the Bokeh but as you say it’s wonderful!
Very interesting. I have the Z5 and 24-200, which I quite like, with 2 caveats. I occasionally miss not being able to go to f4 over 70mm, and also I am concerned about weather resistance, as I will soon be going on a (very) small-ship cruise round the Scottish islands, which will involve a degree of sea spray. But at the same time the extra reach will be useful. I cannot afford both, so it's a dilemma. Oh, and I don't fancy changing lenses in challenging conditions. Those things apart, the 24-120 would suit me down to the ground..
I really like my 24-200mm as well, I think it depends on what focal lengths you prefer using the most. When I looked at my Lightroom stats I barely shot above 120mm and when I did it was at 200mm, so nothing in between. As for weather proofing, I have had no issues. I’ve had sea spray being on water and close to waves and also out in the rain. In extreme cases I put in a cover to protect both and use the lens hood. As long as you aren’t changes lenses when there sea spray you should be absolutely fine
Ive considered buying a nikon z6II as a backup/travel camera with this 24-120 f4 S. Its as sharp in the centre as the 2.8 S, but not so in the corners. But I feel the reach for travel & image quality is perfect.
Yeah I think that would be a great combination. I haven’t noticed the lack of sharpness on the edges. I’m super impressed with the sharpness across the whole image. I hope that helps
@@johnwphotography the corner sharpness comment was based on mft chart comparison. Real world difference is probably less discernable. Thanks, I think I'll put this on my wishlist now.
Have been wondering if there would be a benefit to this lens over the 24-200 on a Z5 but these videos have sold me, I'll rent one first to see if the reach is enough
My Standard Zoom on my Z8 >> a real Swiss Army Lens .. Sold the Z 24-70 F2.8 S to get this lens and it supports my Z 70-200 S and Z 180-600 in Afrcan Wild Life photography where I live
I bet this looks so good on the Z8! I’m glad you’re enjoying the lens and have a positive experience like me. Thank you for the kind comments and happy shooting 📸

I agree great camera, I’m so happy with the quality of images I’m getting with that and this lens combo.
I was perfectly fine with Z5 except for poor AF, which was especially bad with my Sony lenses. Switched to Z6ii because of AF.
What amazes me is that the Nikon D750 sensor is still going strong in the Z5 in 2024.
Yeah it’s incredible. I’m still very happy with my Z5
Thanks for the video on this lens and the images as examples of what can be achieved. I am about to buy it.
You’re welcome and glad you enjoyed. 6 months on and I still love this lens. It’s my go to for everything now, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Jaw dropping opening scene
It was incredible! Thank you so much! ☺️
I keep looking at this lens, but I already have 24-200, so I am trying to justify. Great video!
I love this lens! It barely leaves my camera. If you do decide to upgrade you will notice a different. What camera body do you have?

That's not sensor dust - it has aperture-shaped edges, and is light coloured, not dark. It's rain on the lens.
