It certainly is a great travel lens, I’ve just got back from a a trip where i only took the 24-200mm lens as it’s so versatile. I will also default to the 24-120mm when I’m travelling for more photography focused trips
@@johnwphotography And one more point regarding the comparison of these lenses. The advantages in sharpness and micro-contrast over 24-200 for the other two glasses matter for the Z7, Z8 and Z9, but not for the Z5 and Z6. On small matrices, almost a similar result can be achieved in editors.
maybe try each lens wide open at F4 at 24mm. It would show better comparison between the 24-120mm and the 24-200mm. you would see much more difference at the edge of the image I think. I understand what you was going for and enjoyed the video.
Hi Nigel, thank you for the comment. Yeah I was thinking about trying different apertures, but didn’t want to make the video too long, so tried to focus on more typical landscape apertures. I would be more than happy to do another comparison at F4 if you would like and I can do some portraits as well? I can say though that at 24mm the 24-120mm is a fair bit shaper at the edges than the 24-200mm. For best sharpness on the 24-200mm I had to shoot between F5.6-8 range. I hope that helps.
Another thing about the 24-200 is thar for the price, you also get VR, which is great if you also shoot on a DX format Z, which don't have body VR, such as I do.
Add in a few bonus points for the 24-120's close-up capabilities / minimum focus distance. Both the 24-120 S and 70-200 S are easily two of Nikon's best zooms ever made.
Completely agree, the minimum focal length is awesome, especially because I don’t have a macro lens. I have started doing more videos with the 24-120 and again, all so sharp. I love it!
The first lens I bought when I got into the Z system was the 24-120...amazing. The second was the 100-400. Just need that 14-30 to complete the trifecta!
Nice comparison video of three fine lenses. My main reason for commenting is your thought of "Did I make a mistake by getting the Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8 vs the Nikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.3?" In fact I own all 3 lenses in the comparison, but also own the Z 100-400mm. From my perspective, it gets down to use-case. Like you, I love the Nikon Z 24-120mm f4 and it always seems to be on either my Z8 or Z9. But, I take thousands of movement photos in poor light where I'm not allowed to use flash (indoor dog competitions, often under lousy florescent lighting). For me, the 70-200mm f2.8 is critical for those shots, while the Z 100-400mm requires a higher ISO as I need to keep the shutter speed fairly high. Having said that, the Z 100-400mm is a wonderful lens. I know you did this video prior to the release of the Nikon Z 28-400mm f4-8, but personally, I'm thinking about trading my Z 24-200mm f4-6.3 for the newer lens as it's used primarily for hiking and travel.
Thank you for the comment and glad you liked the video. That’s really good insights, thanks for sharing. I really do fancy the 100-400mm. Since making this video I’ve been using the 70-200mm a lot more and it’s an outstanding lens. Paired with the 24-120 and it’s the ultimate combo.
Glad you enjoyed it, it’s so hard to really show the best of each lens. I’ve just been away and I took the 24-200mm away with me as I only wanted one lens for convenience and it was perfect. It’s not the sharpest but it’s a great compromise if you want an all in one and to keep wait down without missing any opportunities
I’ve done a similar test between the 24-120 and 24-200 since I own both and always struggle as to which to take on trips and I come down to the 24-120 because it is a bit faster.
Yeah, it’s my go to. I’ve just sold my 24-200mm as it was just sitting there I never used it. Great for hiking but i find 120mm is normally long enough.
Hi John, I had the 24-200 and sold it to finance the 24-120 which like you, I absolutely love, it's definitely a better lens. Unlike you though, I went for the 100-400mm instead of the 70-200mm and I am glad I did. It's great for landscape and I also like to get out and photograph the wildlife and it's a fantastic lens for that. Great video mate, liked and subbed 👍
Hey Steve, really glad you liked the video and I appreciate the like and sub. It’s great to hear you got the 100-400mm lens and are really enjoying it. I think you’ve made a great choice there! I will be joining you soon i think. As for the 24-120mm it’s a cracking lens and I’m so glad I bought it, only had it for 6 weeks and I’m already blown away. I’ve taken over 1k images with it all already!
There's no noticeable difference between them and for landscapes. If I wanted a faster lens than the 24-200 I'd get a 2.8 zoom or a prime. My only real issue with the 24-200 is 200 can occasionally be a bit short.
24-200 is the most convenient travel lens, and that is why it cannot be replaced by others

Yesssss! :)

Epic stuff John, cool to see your workflow and I absolutely love how these shots turned out
Thanks Sean, appreciate your support as always. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I will be doing more like this if all goes well 🤞

That would be the perfect trio! I also want the 14-30! You’ve made two great choices so far!

I use the 70-200 S with the FANTASTIC 180-600 VR .. the 70-200 is NEXT level good for wild life in Africa
This is great to hear. Maybe I won’t sell my 70-200 just yet then!
Great test, although I think the 24-200 looks bad at 200mm at least on youtube, I had 2 and they are super sharp at 200mm!

The Nikon 70-200mm F.4 G ED VR2 Internal zoom. beats all 3 of those others.
The shots at 200mm 0.6s have obvious--OBVIOUS--camera shake.
