Electric or ICE, what I've found in my many years of driving in MA, NH, and ME is to cut *off* the heat to the windshield when driving in heavy, but dry snow on a day like this past Saturday. Keep the windshield cool and all the snow bounces right off - no wiper or washer action needed at all. Most cars, ICE included, have trouble heating the whole windshield enough to positively melt all the snow when the outside temp is below about 20-24 anyhow, especially when moving 35mph+ as you found out. It wasn't the Tesla's fault. No vehicle I have ever driven in on a day like last Saturday could keep the glass warm enough for washer fluid squirts. A squirted windshield also attracts more snow, which then partially melts, then refreezes, tripping up the wipers. Blah. Just keep the glass cold and dry. You can still put some heat out the floor and panel vents and stay decently warm, especially with the seat heaters in today's cars (and assuming that you have decent winter clothing for the day.) Keep the fan speed up with as much outdoor (not recirc) air as possible too in order to keep the insides from fogging - especially with multiple people in the car. Set the air to vent and floor and moderate the temperature down, but keep the fan up. I usually leave climate on automatic, but not on a day like this. One added, admittedly extreme trick is, if I am going to park outside when it's snowing hard, a few minutes before I park, I turn the heat completely OFF and even open the windows. Get all that cabin and glass good and cold before parking. The snow will settle on cold glass and there won't be any scraping needed later. 'Just brush it right off. If it's a wet snowstorm don't bother, but with dry, cold snow these tricks work well.
I’ve always found the problem is water and snow attach to the wiper and freeze, now you have two icicles trying to wipe your windshield and nothing happens.
Your video has helped me convince my wife to move to NH once our kids are done with school, the humidity will be good for me, she loves green. It's great to see that my Model 3 LR will be a very viable vehicle there accounting for range loss, getting broken in on a Volt was a good start.

Just genuinely curious. What is the warranty and how are repairs handled? Are there a lot of repairs in cold climates? How are battery replacements handled?
Nobody answered your question. 😢. I'm waiting for my first winter in the new 2023 model 3 std range. Charging on a fast charger hasn't been more than 20 minutes for me yet, but in cold, if you don't precondition the battery (heat it up) it will take longer to charge in winter. If you know what you're doing, then it shouldn't be a problem. I, too, wish he shared his much energy per mile he used compared to summer. I've heard the versions with the heat pump are really efficient in the winter, but I'll find out soon.
I know it's been a while but it's awkward that you're asking those questions after seeing a video and knowing that Model 3 LR that he has is around 80kwh capacity and did this 140 mile trip in one go. From that you can deduct the charge speed. From the wall at 8kw one can plug it in at 8pm and have it charged up by 6am, about 10h later. Supercharger is around 160kw or 240kw which gives you an ideal time of 30min or 20 min respectively but given that the process slows down past 80% it can take additional 10-20 min per charge. To top it up by 40-50% during any trip with 160kw supercharger it takes about 15 min to get it from 10% to around 60-70% which is equal to around 150 miles of added range. Repairs afaik are via Tesla app. You book a spot, if the repair is simple, they drive to you and fix it on your drive. If more work is needed, you should get a designated garage to handle the replacement. There might be other ways I'm not aware of - I don't own a Tesla. I was wondering the same since he didn't specify Long Range, but I see in the description he lists it as a M3LR, so it's AWD. Kinda disappointing since I'm really curious how the base RWD does with snow tires. I live where hills/rain/snow is a concern so I'm currently thinking I need to wait until I can afford a used M3LR (ideally '21 or later and hopefully with FSD).

@@seanmichael6579 This will be my first winter coming up, just got my car beginning of May, but I love this car so much. Driving is fun again. Smoking every macho guy or diesel head truck dude off the line at a green light, leaving them behind while they are still revving their engines... priceless. All of that maintenance you don't have to deal with. I'm sure it'll be fine in the snow other than reduced range due to the cold. I would buy it again without question.
@@theonetruemorty4078 You say "Driving is fun again. Smoking every macho guy or diesel head truck dude off the line at a green light" but driving is about much more than straight line acceleration, does it handle well in the corners? can you feel the road through the wheel or is the electric power steering too numb? does it weight transfer well? I'd imagine it would struggle to rotate as it's 50/50 weight distribution, but has a much higher mass moment of inertia than a comparable 50/50 mid-engined car. Because nothing is more embarrassing than smoking someone off the line, just to have them fly past you as soon as there's a bend in the road.
It does everything. I mostly only used self-drive on the highway because it's so much fun to drive on the curvy/hilly back roads where I live. Very aerodynamic, bottom heavy, and the aerodynamics makes it feel locked to the road. Model 3 or S better for tight, fast cornering, due to lower profile, but I have no complaints with my Y.@@Kaiser-ks3yq
This seem like a very very dry snow which makes driving A LOT easier. Wet Snow is heavy and makes roads way slippery, but good tires as you mentioned helps a ton. Winter tyres are A MUST. regarding driving like everyone's an idiot should apply in all conditions tbf, that how I drive. Avoided a few accidents because of that :) always EXPECT the worst! good stuff 👍 edit: every stop that you have made, you should clear your tail lights at the very least..
Not only should the tail-lights be cleared whenever opportunity comes, also the ice on the vipers need to be crushed and cleared off. The ice cumulates because of the heat coming from the glass, and could be minimised by turning all heat off. Then the snow stops melting and turning into ice, sticking to the part that has no direct contact to the glass.
Totally agree with your points. I’ve got the exact same 2021 M3 LR. Came from a tuned Golf R with about 380 bhp. I just love the Tesla. I went to Brattleboro VT in 0 degree weather and no problems at all. Lots of ignorance out there. I think the car is just incredible.
Significantly cheaper. Like not even close. That's with NHs extremely high electricity costs too. Although I do get my electric at a decent discount with my time of use meter During the summer months (before my electric rates, and everyone else's, went up), I was able to drive close to 150 miles for the cost of 1 gallon of 87 octane. Now, with the colder weather, and my increased electric cost, I can drive roughly 90 miles for $2.99

Yeah, agreed, I would choose the 4wd all day and all night over any winter tires. Of course, appropriate tires are very important and should be mandatory in some regions, imho, because you can change tires within 24 hours when season demands it.
Currently I have 2,000 free Supercharger miles from Mr Elon Musk himself haha. Jokes aside, I got two refferal codes from people who bought new Teslas. The reward is 1,000 free Supercharger miles each. When those go away, most Superchargers in this area cost around $0.32 per kilowatt. I have been to Hampton beach in June If 2021 and irs so did rent in the summer where there is thousands of people around and all of the stores are open and now in the winter there is hardly any people and it looked like an lot of the places where closed at 9:30 the hotel to the left with the 2 decks on it was the place we stayed and there was a lot of people there and one thing I remember about the hotel is the only thing they had for breakfast was doughnuts 🍩 and the guy at the front desk was very nice he told us some things we could do.

Is this vehicle awd and long range?
Was really looking forward to seeing the energy consumption for this trip...how many kwh/mile or miles/kwh or whatever other info. Literally the worst of the worst conditions for an EV
What about the range ?
Hi, is your model 3 AWD or rear wheel drive? can you tell me where did you get your snow tires? Can I just have it done by costco tire center in winter or it has to be done by tesla service? Thanks for great video and you are so kind to help that woman who stuck in the snow. Cheers!
Dude At this road condition you were driving too fast . I guess you haven't idea about that. What was average energy consumption at that trip ?
Have a Model Y on order and live in Maine. Interested to see how it's going to fair, so glad to see people sharing their experiences in the frozen north. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I know it's been several months, but how did it go? I'm considering an EV but I'm in the same snowy geographical area.
@@Kaiser-ks3yqlol, it‘s as fast in s bent as its allowed to drive. 😂😂 what a wild take, just try one
Avoided a few accidents because of that :) always EXPECT the worst! good stuff 👍
edit: every stop that you have made, you should clear your tail lights at the very least..
Yes was a very dry snow. Temps around 13-16f resulted in a very fluffy, blowing snow as the day and storm progressed
Couldn't agree more
where do you get new tires put on? I had Walmart do my Subie's tires, don't believe I would want to give them a Tesla to work on.
Local performance shop
What's the difference between a Tesla and a Subaru when changing tires?
How is the cost of charging it vs. gas?
Significantly cheaper. Like not even close. That's with NHs extremely high electricity costs too. Although I do get my electric at a decent discount with my time of use meter
During the summer months (before my electric rates, and everyone else's, went up), I was able to drive close to 150 miles for the cost of 1 gallon of 87 octane.
Now, with the colder weather, and my increased electric cost, I can drive roughly 90 miles for $2.99
You never cleaned your stoplights ...
"Any snow storm you throw at it" you dont know? Probably because your not Canadian. Try 3ft of snow in under 30 hours in Winnipeg. If your not the snow plow, your not going anywhere.
No, MY state has more snow than yours 😂😂😂
Yup the storm is definitely brutal, I’m in Mass, and there is no one on the road..That thing did great…
Storm is still CRANKING here in Auburn, NH. Driveway was at 13" last hour/ Could be upwards of 18-22" when its all over
I'm in the midwest and currently having the nicest weather we've had in months. Tomorrow's gonna be 60 and sunny!
@@JordanSVT I had to adjust the clutch on my snowblower, I may upgrade to a McLeod..🤣🤣..Is your car stored or will you take it out in the nice weather??
Yeah she is stored away in my heated garage.
My Ariens is a beast. Easily cleared the driveway, with some swearing involved from the cold wind
@@NewEdgeDesigns Still looking for a Cobra, will probably try to pick one up in the spring or summer at the latest. But I will definitely be getting out tomorrow. Got the day off so me and my buddy are gonna meet up and cruise around in my F-250 😂. Its no Cobra but it's a fun vehicle.
Thank you for helping her.
Super dope video man. Thanks for sharing this. Will help a lot of people including myself.
Good winter :D I miss that kind of the weather. :)
Just got my Tesla 3 here in uk n fukin luvit. Does your Tesla not.have the heated wipers. My bad if i missed you say. Loved the little raleigh at the end. Cheers
This is rwd? Thinking of getting it but afraid because we live in wisconsin!
i live in North Dakota, just ordered AWD LR model 3, lets see. Looking at the reviews, it should handle winter, hope so lol
quick tip for the glasses: put it there where the front shield gets air blown at. Turn on de-fog. Wait 15sec. done! :D
Great Video. In Australia we don't have this snow issue. But we do get extremely hot weather but my M3 long range performs just great.
Great video guys! I just put my winter wheels/tires on my Model Y Performance (19” rims) with the same tires Michelin x-Ice Snow and I love them. Last night I was driving in the snow in south of Massachusetts and loved it! Tesla’s are tanks in the snow. The noise level not much or at all from my performance Summer tires. So far very happy with the Tesla (almost 1 year owenrship) and the winter tires!
I had my model y when it came out in 2020. Sold it 6 months back... It was great when it snow, but the battery drain sucks in the winter
Huh?
Bueller....
is this dual motor or just rwd.
Dual motor AWD
@@Intervention302 then no wonder it's good in snow. Even with all season tires it would have been good. I was wondering how it would be in rwd version.
@@tonyn3227yeh, no. You definitely would not want to be in those conditions with all-seasons, hence all the cars stuck and in ditches along the way.
Cool video man. Your car did great out there other than the windshield wiper issue. Maybe Elan can sort that out in future models. The winter tires are a huge part of your success here. I've been using Michelin X-Ice and now Blizzak winter tires on my AWD vehicles. Winter tires make such a big difference in bad weather.
How was your range in weather like this?
Thanks for the question... Range wasn't "that" great. You'd get a safe 150 miles in real world conditions like this.
Likely top of the pack in terms of all EV cars, but not great compared to ICE
@@Intervention302 nice
@@Intervention302 that was a great test. And the results were promising. So many other manufacturers GM, Ford, Rivian are coming out with so many new models in the next 2 years that tesla will no longer be alone. As long as you have the super chargers and your level 2 (I like an 80amp🤭) at home in that weather, you're good to go. Anyway, there weren't many cars on the road and who would drive 150mi in weather like that. Great test! EVs look promising.
Is this RWD ? Sorry maybe I missed that
Thats a regular winter day in Canada. Lol
Try driving in 25 to 40+ cm. One of the biggest snow storms in Toronto Canada, literally every car including model 3 and model y were stuck because of zero ground clearance. I passed everyone in my Jeep Liberty 4x4 crawling at 45km to watch everyone get high centered while they risk high insurance premiums.
Is this the dual motor version?
yeah
Great video, me my question is. Is it the AWD model 3 or RWD? I am making a decision to switching to tesla and the way I see you're blazing through this blizzard of snow seems I will make a good decision
Dual motor AWD
@@Intervention302 ok thank you for the reply
Is this the AWD version? Not sure, thank you!
Yes dual motor awd
Hey! I live in Orange New Hampshire! Howdy Neighbor!!❤
Michelin tires are the bomb.
8:04 one trick my papa thought me is to never buy wiper fluid put 2/3 water , 1/3 windex and one shot of 70% alcohol in the mixture and your golden brother for winter , sumer , autumn you name it broda....
15 degrees 🤣🤣 that's warm.
Ive ordered an M3LR on 03/03/22 before they raised the price..Im still worried about how it will perform in winter like -15and below of things like range and icing wipers/door/windows ectect..Im driving à lexus IS350 and Acura TL's before so reliability is a factor for me so im still usure about à Tesla who dont offer extended warranty in canada🤔.Great video 👍
Those tires are the best on the market. Not surprised with how it did.
I really liked the Xi-3 before it. As well as the Continental VikingContact7. But these X-Ice Snows are my favorite.
i just dont get why people use all season tyres..? if you live in an area that has snow like that why dont people just use proper winter tyres :D just dumb imo. (i live in finland and here we dont have all season tyres.. just summer and winter tyres) ofc there can be places that its rare for storms like this and that i understand.
Those are the brand new Michelin X-Ice Snows
@@Intervention302 what is your opinion on Michelin CrossClimate 2? We recently moved to VT and unfortunately got in an accident on our first drive moving here last winter. Trying to find best option for upcoming snow season. Do you feel the crossclimate2 all weather (snow rated) would suffice or the ones you have? If X-ice, do you swap the tires off rim each season or do you have separate rims with tires to swap out? Saw that Tesla offers snow tire package but not sure my 2020 Tesla (pre-refresh because of sensors.)
I am thinking of buying Tesla 3. Is your’s AWD? I don’t recall you saying
Add rubbing alcohol the windshield fluid
AWD or. RWD ?
Awd
BTW, thanks for the look at Hampton Beach in a nor'easter. As many years as I've lived in New England, I've never gotten to the coast on a day like last week and especially a place like HB, where I have spent many a summer day.
Is your Tesla a standard rear wheel drive?
Dual motor AWD
I’m from Wisconsin and we got nothing on your winter storms. That looked like terrible driving conditions.
Props for driving up your driveway!
I have a Model Y on order for delivery by mid-December. The range in cold weather is disappointing but should not be a problem with my lifestyle.
DD was a nice touch!
From a fellow Wisconsinite - enjoy your Model Y. I've got a 2023 Model 3 with snow tires and now just need some snow!
What are you talking about? Did you just move to Wisconsin? I used to live in Ashland, WI back in the late 1990s and there were much worse snowstorms than that almost every year. What city do you live in?
5:23 yall really should of cleared that off before you even started driving.
Top video Kevin. Nice work. Do you have a link to the tyres please? Also my Y has a heater switch for the wipers nit sure if your does or not.
Great video. Thank you for putting your model 3 to the test!
Dam you guys don't even have jackets... Respect lol
It's not cold inside the car though lol
great vid.
The old saying my said dad was the tires make the car proform not car proform for you
Ok best way to keep ice from building on front windshield and wipers?
If I was you I would hit the wipers every few minutes just to make sure they don’t freeze like that
What were the tires?
Should have tried autopilot or FSD if you have it.
I did. Sorry Gopro battery was critical. Autopilot wouldn't work. But cruise control would work on and off
Good video. I live in New Brunswick canada and we know nor eastern. This storm your showing is the one that hit us as well. Lots of snow but the winds were really bad visibility was very poor.
Only about 13" at my house, but some of the most intense winter winds I've seen!
What’s the point of making a video about how well a car performs in the snow when there’s barely any snow on the ground at all
I know teslas are safe and all, but still seems you're driving way too fast for the conditions.
I have a lot of experience in this type of weather. But to each their own
Bro your driving fast asf is Tesla the move?!?
Wasn't really that fast?
A bit late - which version is it? Dual long range? Sr+?
Is it awd? 😉
Dual motor long range.
So awd :)
I've got the 2023 model 3 std range. Got it in June. Has 32,000 miles on it, mostly city driving. I routinely get a rate of over Tesla started miles. Feel free to do this test in Michigan with a RWD with same tires. I'll let you use it at no cost.
The Bad thing about EV in this kind of weather temp reduce the range by HALF.
Which is exactly why he never mentioned it.
Tesla is a beast
passing cars like that will end up with you in a ditch these days, you have a false sense of over confidence. Most people who end up in ditches are people with 4 x 4 or good tires with too much confidence. Your vehicle is waaaaayyyy heavy and all it takes is a slight patch of ice and your toast. Its not that the truck driver is scared, he is driving appropriately and sensibly for the conditions.
I'll try to keep your concerns in mind next time I'm driving my vehicle
Great video but you were driving too fast in those conditions most of the time.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. Sorry one thing... wipe the snow off your brake lights! I had anxiety watching you, wondering if someone wouldn't see you stop and slam into you. I am considering driving north with my model 3 LR and I feel better about it after watching your video.
Five years from now, electric cars can fly! LOL
sweet ride you got! i love going out and driving in storms feels great on fresh snow :D but mines a 1991 camry and blizzak tires havnt got stuck in normal driving, i did get stuck while bottoming out a few times lol but thats expected of the low clearance vehicle, i see from your windshield wiper issue that is good to know about e cars. you wont have that issue on ice vehicles unless your heater core is damage
3:00 Your passenger looks like he’s in fear.
I would be too if i was going what looks like 65 in a blizzard
How is the Regen braking in the snow ?
Surprisingly efficient. I was worried it would over brake and slip, but it's wonderfully modulated. Slows down the car about as fast as possible just before abs triggering.
as soon as I heard sea brook nh I though oh a local and subscribed
Awesome video! I bought and M3P and some Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4s for snow. The tires came but the car hasn't yet... Anyway, I'll be moving to NH in a few months here, but having no knowledge of the area do you know any nice places to drive? Maybe some back roads or just scenic routes or something? Would appreciate it if you could let me know, thanks! Absolutely can't wait to drive in the snow :)
Hi, from Massachusetts here, but with many years in NH and Maine.....Really, anything from the NH Lakes Region north is very scenic and fun, all around the north side of Lake Winnipesaukee and Squam, up I-93 through Franconia Notch, the White Mountains- all the way up to extreme northern NH, Colebrook, Pittsburg.

Don’t be cocky, they are not meant for snow I had two Teslas stuck and folks parked in my driveway all night..
Not meant for snow? Looked like that was determined to be a lie
The fact you made this video not really wearing proper winter clothes…
It's not even the tires man, my tires are on it's last threads and I still was going 60 in a foot of snow, the awd system is just insane
Yeah, agreed, I would choose the 4wd all day and all night over any winter tires. Of course, appropriate tires are very important and should be mandatory in some regions, imho, because you can change tires within 24 hours when season demands it.

Hella fun video..when you charge in public like you did how do you pay?
Currently I have 2,000 free Supercharger miles from Mr Elon Musk himself haha. Jokes aside, I got two refferal codes from people who bought new Teslas. The reward is 1,000 free Supercharger miles each.
When those go away, most Superchargers in this area cost around $0.32 per kilowatt. On the avg Model 3 consumption of 250 watts per mile, that means you can travel 44 miles for $3.50
At home me electric rate used to be 8.72c, and is now 11.1c per kilowatt. At 11.1c I can travel up to 120 miles for the cost of 1 gallon of gas
