Dave, you always travel to Wyoming. You must know that Wyoming gets a lot of snow. For this kind of weather you need snow tires and a snow brush. You also need snow boots and winter coat. Even a small shovel might help to dig you out. You have to be prepared for these kind of conditons. Still,.interesting to.see how the MODEL Y performed in Winter conditions. I've been told when it gets that cold, best to preheat the car ahead of time. Thanks for sharing.
Precisely. When the wheels get stuck a simple and slight shovel in front of the front or better each tire will relieve the forward snow dam. Clearing the ice above the windshield wipers … possibly a solid decision. Scraping the windows on the bottom & top edge before trying to make the motors over work. I mean really any practical effort would be helpful. I’m a bit spoiled though I lived in steamboat for over a decade and we saw deep days. 12-20” a session, and -40 every winter from approximately Jan 5 to feb 1 for only two weeks max in that time. Totally harsh but I guided snowmobile tours and I tell you trying to start sleds at that temp was fun, but like with everything there is a way. Pull the cord slow many times before really trying the start. And with vehicles you need to slow down and look at what’s functioning. Stop sitting there and watching things fail. It’s more like see what may ‘ will be making it not work and clearing the issue before it’s a problem. Agh that’s just me. F*ck I love snow. Deep / thick / fluffy ass POW POW! MISS THAT SHIT! oh and can’t wait to sled this season, brrrrapppppppppp
turning on your wipers with that much snow on it is a good way to strip the wiper splines and then having to replace the linkage or it could break the linkage itself
Then it is a badly designed system (and yes, Tesla is badly designed - especially for winter and wet climate). No problem on our properly designed car. The wiper motors are protected so the wiper just stalls. I accidently tried this on rear wiper last winter. A sound was heard and then silence. The wiper just shut off when it sensed it did not turn as it should.
PZero’s are summer only, not even all season. Beyond not being designed at all for snow, you are actively ruining those tires by having them in freezing temps. Buy snow tires.
You don’t ruin a tire by driving it in the snow, you just wont have enough traction and they’ll be really hard which isn’t good for braking, how will that ruin the tire?
@@harsimranbansal5355 some summer tires are ruined by a combination of pressure and freezing beyond the point of elasticity, but the range varies based on the compound. If you drive on them while frozen and hit bumps they could be ruined...summer tires are a pita =\
@@harsimranbansal5355 actually you do ruin certain summer tires if you have them in sub-freezing temperatures. They are made to operate in a certain temperature "window".
Wow I will never get that 8 minutes back. We had the same storm in colorado, 12 inches, 0 degrees, my model 3 dual motor was amazing with some studded snows and preheating on completely ice crusted mountain roads going up and down 3000 feet. And gloves and winter boots. Be prepared. Tesla’s are ridiculously amazing performers in the snow. Incredibly agile and safe and balanced and incredible traction.
Hey dave! Appreciate the video, always nice to see beautiful snowy conditions... can't wait for the snow here in Sweden. I notice as many others did many "beginner mistakes"! Tip 1: preheat the car for about 60mins, don't use maximum heat since windshield might crack with that much snow on top and if you have a stone chip or small crack allready. Tip 2, try to charge all night so battery keeps warm, yours was cold since charging was already complete Tip 3: don't use windshield wipers or windows before clearing snow and ice... can break. For the Windows you can use an old credit card to slide between the rubber and window to clear any ice-buildup. Wipers you can brush of the snow and manually slap(with caution) against the windshield to clear some ice. Tip 4: it's your car but please just slap the boots together to release snow rather then kicking your beautiful car... Tip5: don't use performance tires in the cold, they suck on snow and ice and they get badly damaged from the cold since that type of rubber is not made for those temps. Tip 6: when driving in snow, use momentum. If you get stuck, don't mash the pedal and rely on TC... go little back, then forward again to get some momentum. Would probably been able to drive there if you did that trick. Tip 7: don't put the extendercord and charge cable buried in snow, hang the cord end/connection on something so it's not buried in water(water+electricity is bad!). The charge cable box should probably also be above snow and you can use a plastic bag to cover it. Again, thanks for the snow video and please consider my tips :)
People don't do this if you do not know how to preheat your Tesla. Go to your app go to climate to the right corner hit the defroster. Make sure your heat turns on give it about thirty to forty minutes, This will not only preheat your cabin as well as some of your windows, But will also preheat your battery...
@@edwardecko Of course not, since those are not adapted to winter conditions and wet conditions. And what has that to do with things? If you have no cell coverage, how do you preheat? And if you do not have your phone?

@@edwardecko Why would i want one? Bad build quality and not winter or wet adapted. Water goes in the trunk, radar gets clogged during winter slush, doors that will freeze and will make it hard to get in, charge port that will freeze, a touch screen that does not work with gloves, crappy service, bad location of the few service places there is, bad towing capabilities (except model X), difficult to repair your self because of Tesla's crappy policy, you do not own your own car (they can disable things in it for no apparent reason), glass roof (only means trouble and higher cost), and more. I have a car, that works very well during winter, with radar that will never get clogged (and thus it is 100% operational in all weathers - never had one single failure on it), easy to get spare parts if needed, large service and repair network, i own the car and I the manufacturer can not just remove functions without me consenting, more than twice the range compared to Tesla and more. I did this with Michelin X Ice tires and had the same results. What I found was the perfectly flat bottom in the snow high centered the car because the snow literally lifted the car 1 inch removing the pressure off the tires. Removing traction even from my Xice tires. I bet if you put a board in the tow hitch to plow the snow down to 5” it wouldn’t get highcentered going backwards. I’m not sure how to achieve the same thing going forward.

No this is not a test at all sir, this is showing your incompetency as a driver. You proceed to dump the plug into the snow. Worst of all, you brush the snow off with a broom which can create micro scratches on your windshield. I would hate to be anywhere around you on the road.
I'm a fan of electric cars, and I don't hate on them. But I live in Chicago, and during the Winter it's a certain way you take of any vehicle. And it's not like in this video.
Ron, your right but I wanted to see if and how the model Y could handle very deep snow. It has summer tires and 7 inches of ground clearance. I knew it might not do well but I wanted to see. Nothing broke, in fact it backed up fine. It was a test that’s all
Poor car being abused with a scratchy broom and ruler. The biggest problem is the low clearance. A combination of more clearance and snow tires would make a huge difference.
Well, looking on the positive side, it suggests that if you give it around an hour on AC, brush all the snow off, clear the drivers window where it meets the seal, free the wipers, (same with the charge port), and do some blood warming shovel work, the car would be out. The beauty of electric. There's nothing like trying things out, and it's testimony to the car's robustness. Interesting video.
Well, the snow is too deep for most cars anyway. I didn’t see an attempt to rock they car by (carefully) shifting between drive and reverse with a certain rhythm. Not saying the car could be taken out for a drive in those conditions but it might have been able to drive forward in its own tracks. Question: will the snow partially melt under the car and later freeze to the battery cover when it cools down?
I had performance tires on a 1990 Nissan 300 ZX. Going down the road and a weather report would come on predicting snow or rain and the car would start to skid. First snowfall and I pulled into a place and put 4 heavy duty snows on that puppy and then she was GREAT.
This guy did the same thing with all season tires in 12 inches of snow. He went on many unplowed roses and he never lost traction.. he even had fun and trying to make the car loose traction. It only slipped but that proves tesla is a beast at snow
Credit card the bottom edge. It seals on the bottom part. Every window every time. I mean I could be wrong it being a tesla that I don’t own yet, but I lived in steamboat for 16 years and a few times have been without the scraper and had to go to the cc to get the job done. Diligently take it to the corner of the rubber to the glass and even slip it in between the glass and the rubber. You just have to break the seal on the rim. Thanks for the post. This vehicle will always be different from any other ice vehicle so it’s great to have you sharing the experience.

Haha. Well, You need some Michelin’n x-ice north 4 studded tires and clean off that snow gently before you start your wipers and you’re good to go 😉 cheers from a Norwegian
Must be new with a car in snow. Need a car snow brush and winter tires, to test the car not the tires? Should back in the start spot to have less snow where parked. Clear ice on windows before operating windows or wipers as is normal for all cars?
I had Pirelli P-Zero summer performance tires on my SLK55 Mercedes. On a cold Ohio morning it was easy to spin both rear tires on dry asphalt pavement with light throttle. On snow at 10 degrees "Fahgeddaboudit". Four Michelin Pilot Sport 4s All-weather tires got installed on it last week. With little more than 4 inches of ground clearance, it won't be going out in snow anyway.
It would! Here in Norway its forbidden to drive in those conditions with out snow tires! And there is a reason for that.. btw we by an extra sett of rims with snow tires on them so its as simple as switching them when the winter comes.
first you buy a soft brush and remove as much snow as possible, then u turn on climate for 30-40min, then you replace your tires wuth winter tires and then you can try to drive throught the snow while your car is at optimal condition
I don’t want to pile on, but this is IMPORTANT. It appears to me that the extension cord used to plug in Dave’s MY was 14 gauge. Based on the amount of current the Tesla is pulling through that cord to use the Mobile Charger, I am concerned that you would burn out either your Mobile Charger and/or your Tesla. I would advise to never use anything thinner than a 12 gauge extension cord, and that only if you are less than 50 feet, maximum. These vehicles are too pricey to be using a cheap extension cord. Also, the high performance summer tires would likely get stuck in far less snow than Dave is demonstrating here. They simply are not made for snow use. Thanks for showing us some extreme weather conditions Dave. Take good care of that Model Y. Mine arrives this Saturday here in Minnesota. All the best.
I've had to do that many times to get my door to open or windows to roll down. As long as you're hitting it when the window is all the way up, you'll never be able to break it. Sometimes you just don't have the time to let it warm up for 20 minutes first.
Frameless windows are a pain when the temp hovers around the freezing mark, the rubber likes to glue itself to the glass if there is any humidity inside. Used to have a fiero and had to do the same thing to unstick the doors.

But, since i have a car built in Sweden and designed for Sweden, i just... open the door and get in to get my brush and ice scraper (man do that thick layer stick to the windows, even if i have preheated the car for a while especially if it is like -10 degree or colder!)
Have you experienced snow? And more than just some white tiny layer on the ground.
If there were pills for stupidity, this video would be a perfect patient. So much wrong here... as many have said.
@Yngve Andersen , not familiar with that name nor person. Where are they from?
@Yngve Andersen , I just looked him up. He's a singer from Norway but no relation to myself or family.
turning on your wipers with that much snow on it is a good way to strip the wiper splines and then having to replace the linkage or it could break the linkage itself
Agreed, the person in this video is damaging the vehicle.
What an absolutely ridiculous video. I would elaborate but everything has already been said.
As I said it was a test
The Model Y is clearly idiot safe... (You need help man)
PZero’s are summer only, not even all season.
Performance tires will start to crack when frozen.
@@harsimranbansal5355 actually you do ruin certain summer tires if you have them in sub-freezing temperatures. They are made to operate in a certain temperature "window".
Ahhh ok, thank you guys!
Silly to assume the wiper was even going to move, but its a great way to break something
Not if it is properly designed (and Tesla is NOT properly designed).
Thank you for this real life test under extreme conditions. Thank you again.
Tip 2, try to charge all night so battery keeps warm, yours was cold since charging was already complete
Tip 3: don't use windshield wipers or windows before clearing snow and ice...
Nice way to scratch up the car.....😳so many wrong things in this video....
People don't do this if you do not know how to preheat your Tesla. Go to your app go to climate to the right corner hit the defroster. Make sure your heat turns on give it about thirty to forty minutes, This will not only preheat your cabin as well as some of your windows, But will also preheat your battery...
And if you can not preheat?
@@Xanthopteryx Do you have a Tesla Model?
@@edwardecko Of course not, since those are not adapted to winter conditions and wet conditions.
And what has that to do with things? If you have no cell coverage, how do you preheat? And if you do not have your phone?
@@Xanthopteryx We live in Colorado, My Tesla Model X as well as the S are Four wheel drive. It handle well in the snow when equipped with snow tires. As far as cell coverage as long as there is somewhat you will have signal to the vehicle. Contact your local Tesla through the Internet and see if you could rent a vehicle which you could do for A-day. I highly recommend.
And of course better materials and better build quality.
Of course I will drive one of i got one here, but i am not spending hours searching and getting to a place that have one, and i would especially not pay that huge amount of money for one. They are ridiculously expensive, especially compared to the quality.
First thing u do is turn on the heat all the way up from the phone app. TY
Makes you wonder if he owns the car.
Omg, I use to think I looked crazy for using a house broom to remove snow…🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 not any more.
Remember, you do have a snow option under the driveability panel.
? Snow option. Where?
This is how not to deal with heavy snow, where does he live calafornia, this guy's something else
0:37 Where They got The design for The Cybertruck from
I've lived through blizzards and ice in Chicago and I now live in Houston. I would definitely clear off the snow and ice from my M Y before driving away.
this is the most entertaining tesla video I've ever seen!!!!! LMFAO ~~~ love it! please make more video like this
That was BRUTAL
When the charge door made the sound of stripping out the gears, I felt that 💔
Poor design, i know.
@@Xanthopteryx No.. it was the guy forcing it open?
@@Xanthopteryx not the tesla hater thinking it’s poor design, he actually forced it???
@@yoo.daniell Poor design. It should be built to not sound like shit or break if you force it. It is a fucking lid you know - that freezes stuck during winter.....
holy cow..... why on earth would you use a literal broom to move the snow, i just can't imagine all the scratches that thing is gonna leave.
Next they will claim poor tesla factory paint job
I was cringing when the ruler was scraping the paint. Tesla uses a water-based paint and it's soft.
and the ruler... old school
You need to preheat the vehicle for 30 minutes and most of it would be gone
just read, the Y is fully protected
3:30 and 8:14 Removing the snow from your shoes by kicking your vehicle risks damage to your vehicle. Instead, tap your shoes against each other to remove the snow.
Not only that you damage the car.. you get a lot of snow inside the car also doing it the way he does... I guess that person has not lived in a snowy climate very long..
Personally I prefer to use my ice scraper brush to brush off my pant legs and bang the shoes! Before getting in! But i also scrape the windshield and break the wipers loose! This video hurts my feels! Luv from canuck land
No this is not a test at all sir, this is showing your incompetency as a driver. You proceed to dump the plug into the snow. Worst of all, you brush the snow off with a broom which can create micro scratches on your windshield. I would hate to be anywhere around you on the road.
I have never wanted to reach through the TV and smack the shit out of somebody more than when I watched this video. For several reasons
It was a test, no worries
That broom made me close my eyes >< with scratches
I came here mostly for entertainment. Mission accomplished (best of all, the comments) so I subbed. Can't wait for the upcoming repair videos.
It was a test that’s all
Thanks! I play to use my Y as a ski car. I'll need to anticipate the issues your found.
Poor car being abused with a scratchy broom and ruler. The biggest problem is the low clearance. A combination of more clearance and snow tires would make a huge difference.
Using the ruler as a scraper made me cry a little
OMG the broom on the paint. Oh well.
PPF and Ceramic in all paint, no scratches that won’t self heal
Well, looking on the positive side, it suggests that if you give it around an hour on AC, brush all the snow off, clear the drivers window where it meets the seal, free the wipers, (same with the charge port), and do some blood warming shovel work, the car would be out. The beauty of electric.
There's nothing like trying things out, and it's testimony to the car's robustness. Interesting video.
Just one question, whats a ruff?
Why did you not just preheat prior to you doing all that?
What if you can not preheat?
@@Xanthopteryx All Tesla vehicles are able to preheat.
@@edwardecko What if you do not have cell coverage on car/phone?
What if you do not have the phone?
Where do you live exactly? Inside a freezer?
no winter tires, not the best decision
This guy did the same thing with all season tires in 12 inches of snow. He went on many unplowed roses and he never lost traction.. he even had fun and trying to make the car loose traction. It only slipped but that proves tesla is a beast at snow
Was there a miracle expected? Since you trying to move a heavy car that’s on summer sports tires??
Credit card the bottom edge. It seals on the bottom part. Every window every time. I mean I could be wrong it being a tesla that I don’t own yet, but I lived in steamboat for 16 years and a few times have been without the scraper and had to go to the cc to get the job done. Diligently take it to the corner of the rubber to the glass and even slip it in between the glass and the rubber. You just have to break the seal on the rim.
Thanks for the post. This vehicle will always be different from any other ice vehicle so it’s great to have you sharing the experience.
I am getting a Performance in January. Can someone reccomend good snow tires? Also guessing indeed to buy new wheels to accommodate the snow tires? Any recommendations on wheels? Thank you in advance for your replys.
Check with Marian wheels.com
Thanks for showing how these Tesla vehicles can operate in cold snowy conditions. I live in Illinois so we don't have quite a violent winters as Wyoming.
I plan to get a Tesla Model Y Long Range in the near future.
Take care.
These were Extreame summer tires not at all suited for snow. The traction control did very well using these tires, that is what I tested. Using All season and especially snow tires works awesome
How about a garage with TWC?
With that straw brush, you have to really put in some elbow grease to get that snow off. That paint isn't going to scratch itself
-12 C on performance summer tires :-)
Definitely from North Carolina, we're the only ones that try to remove snow with a broom and no gloves. I was waiting for the credit card to come out. 🤣
I’m an engineer, no model Y’s were harmed in this experiment. Im born to experiment
Is it ok to leave it parked with snow up against the underside? The battery will basically have ice against it.
This guy must hate his Tesla lol
Why didn’t you turn on “off road” mode it was right above slip start in the drive menu?
Nice. 11 inches more snow than here in Norway :)
I put pirelli sottozero winter tires on my model 3. I use that as a snow plow now. Lol
Glad I live where it doesn't snow. Good Luck up there in Wyoming Dave.
I would really advice using the pre heat before wiping the car off. And summer tires is a no go.
What if you can not preheat?
This dude really dont care about the car 😂 Using a ruler and a broom to clear snow and bangs shoes on car to get snow off. Bet the car looks great in the sun 😂
How were you not able to drive forward? Were the wheels spinning? How can that amount of snow stop you?
When he was punching the glass i was waiting for it to crack LOL
It’s tough
I love your videos Dave, but this gives anyone with even mild OCD nightmares 🤣 But, I understand you just wanted to experiment with the car in those conditions lol
Exactly, no intention to freak folks out, I had no intention to wreck my car.
Thanks for this video. I have been waiting for one like this as I decide to get a Model Y but also got orders for Fort Drum, NY.
You have to get winter tyres, you're endangering yourself and others in traffic with the summers on.
I don't care so much if this guy hurts himself being an idiot with the wrong tires, but the worst possible outcome is that someone else is getting hurt by his stupidity.
tesla model y has good traction…. This guy did the same test with 12 inches of snow. He went in an unplowed road with all season tires and nothing happened… it proves tesla is a beast at snow
@@yoo.daniell you know what's better than a Tesla with summer tyres in the snow? A Tesla with snow tyres in the snow.
The empty probably spoiled Taco Bell bad from last week still on the car seat floor, had me 💀💀💀😭😭😭
If it’s plugged in, why not use the app and warm it up first?
With the right tires sure. Good wintertires makes all the difference.
Ohh noes... Looks like a Cafe Latte car for those city slickers😁
Nice summer tires (that are not made for 12F) on that model Y.
I bet winter/all-season tires would have been much better. It's a pain to switch though.
It would! Here in Norway its forbidden to drive in those conditions with out snow tires! And there is a reason for that.. btw we by an extra sett of rims with snow tires on them so its as simple as switching them when the winter comes.
Preheat.....winter tyres
In Norway you would lose your license To drive without proper tyres and clear windows.
The only thing you proved here is you’re not too bright
Who scratches their car with a ruler! Get this guy an ice scraper. How rediculous to try wipers without removing snow.
Easy to do by accident too.
Snow tires?
Growing up in New England I had my fill of all of that. Come back. Beautiful autumn weather in SC.
👍 cosy videos.
Please keep inserting the Celsius/European equivalents on screen.
What happened to the scrappers ?b
Thanks for the metric!
Why are you in Wyoming at this time of year?
first you buy a soft brush and remove as much snow as possible, then u turn on climate for 30-40min, then you replace your tires wuth winter tires and then you can try to drive throught the snow while your car is at optimal condition
All the best.
imagine thinking the wipers will take care of that much snow xD what a guy
This guy is really is out here punching his window?
I've had to do that many times to get my door to open or windows to roll down. As long as you're hitting it when the window is all the way up, you'll never be able to break it. Sometimes you just don't have the time to let it warm up for 20 minutes first.
Frameless windows are a pain when the temp hovers around the freezing mark, the rubber likes to glue itself to the glass if there is any humidity inside. Used to have a fiero and had to do the same thing to unstick the doors.
Dave is gangster treating his Tesla like a cheap Honda 😂
Snow tires????
