    Side note too: the Model 3 Long Range also has a performance boost for $2,000, reducing the 0-60 time from 4.2 seconds to roughly 3.6 seconds. For me, the ROI of the $6,000 more to get to 3.1 seconds was worth it, but this is also a fantastic option if LR is what you’re feeling!

    • @pauldawson57
      @pauldawson57 3 года назад +25

      You also have to consider that the Performance has a 3.1 seconds with the rollout subtracted. They don’t measure the SR or LR that way otherwise their numbers would be lower. The real benefit of the Performance over the LR with boost is off the line as it does seem to jump a little faster. From what I’ve seen they are nearly the same from a highway roll. That’s why I went with a LR. If there was a tri-motor Model 3 Plaid it would really change things.

      I was considering the performance for the brakes, acceleration, and top speed. Then i heard about the tire issue and decided to just get better breaks on the lr with accel boost

    • @Seacai150
      @Seacai150 3 года назад +10

      I really wanted a performance but with the long range with acceleration boost it’s soooo close. All the reps at the Tesla service center said the long range was just as good as the performance unless your actually racing the car on a track. Just didn’t make sense to spend 8000$ more and then have the issue with the tire cost and more likely to get flats or warped rims.

    • @Jkan2001
      @Jkan2001 3 года назад +1

      What would you say with a 8k tax credit factored in for the LR but not the performance? Would you go LR plus AB for 2k or Performance? Total delta in that case would be 14k

    As of late 2021: Model 3 Long Range is 358 mi EPA estimated range with the standard 18 Aero wheels. The $1,500 19" Sport wheels reduce to 334. And Performance is 315. Not a major difference, but notable if you'll be taking road trips. In particular given much lower real-world numbers.

      Model 3 LR is easily a better option than SR+ and performance. If you were deciding between LR and performance, you might as well just buy LR with acceleration boost (+$2000)

  • @shaolin89

    I choose long range based on two things: range and more rubber on the wheels. In Denmark, the difference in range between long range and performance is 34 miles (not 19 miles) which is important for me as I live in Denmark, in Northern Europe. 0-60 in 3 seconds is awesome, but 4 seconds in the long range seemed Ferrari enough when I test drove it😂

    I just wanted to comment and say that I don’t park my Model 3 in a garage but I have my wall charger installed outside in my driveway. The wall charger works flawlessly outside so I would say not having a garage isn’t such a big deal if you can install a wall charger somewhere on you property, even out side. My charger isn’t even mounted to the outside of the house, it’s on a post on the side of the driveway.

    One advantage of a Nema 14-50 over the Tesla wall charger is that if in future you ever buy a non-Tesla EV, you will already have a charger for it. That's useful also for house value when and if you sell your house.

    4:36 the LR has the option to add Acceleration Boost. For only $2000. This reduces 0 to 60 to 3.6 seconds. Much more value and you can use the money saved for a nice wrap, body kit, better wheels and Performance badge. Although I generally debadge my cars.

    When you compared the range (long range vs performance), looks like you were using the sport wheels. Long Range with Aero wheels is 358 miles vs 315 for performance. That's a decent difference. So a long range with acceleration boost is a really nice option. This is what I did then just added the OEM spoiler. One thing I wish I had was the upgraded brakes.

      1,400 * 9 = $12,600.

    Another tip!! Don't spend the extra money on fancy colors. The best way to go is to get a default color (gray or white) and wrap it in the color you want. Might save you money (especially with the red model) AND protect your car from scratches, rocks, paint chips, etc. + you can customize it to whatever color your heart desires and replace it any time.

    (4:31) Depending on how long one plans to keep their Model3, battery degradation might influence this factor. Up to a ten year period with a non LFP battery, you can lose around 25 miles of range or more off a full charge. So the performance model could end up with less than 290 miles, while the LR3 would still get over 320 miles. Sentry mode and climate controls drain battery, so that also means less of that too…
    (15:00) Gas…. Accelerator…

    Well, I watched allot of Tesla videos over the past months and made my decision to buy the 2023 Model Y long range vehicle. Should be coming in a week or so.
    I am retired and bought the Tesla for economics, not for speeds. The long range vehicle should be plenty fast for me. I also got Tesla for the single pedal regen operation. I just do short daily trips so my charging should be minimal for one week driving. I live in Northern Illinois, so I will see how the winters go, the vehicle should be good though.
    1. I went with all the standard options Midnight silver color, black interior, 19 inch wheels, No EAP or FSD.
    2. I have a home garage and got installed 220 volt Nema outlet. Bought the Tesla mobile charger kit. Comes with 110 and 220 plug adaptors.
    3. Accessories will be ongoing, right now have better floor matts and protective display screen.
    4. This 2023 Model Y is supposed to come with HW4 and better cameras.
    All in all, this vehicle should be a good fit for me. I did not want to wait for the so called Newer Juniper model Y vehicle and who knows what the cost would be.
    Thanks for your video and take care.

    Excellent! You packed a ton of great and useful info in a short video.
    One thing I’d add: check with your utility company when considering an EV. Ours gives us an EV discount of $0.015 off our already cheap midnight-6:00 AM TOU rate. It can add up. They also had a $500 credit to install a home charging station.
    Lastly, Teslas come with a very robust charging cable. It has a 110/120 regular plug. BUT… you can purchase a 220/240 plug (in various configurations) that swaps out the standard plug for around $50.00. So if you want to save some $$, use the charging cable the car comes with, and get a 220/240 outlet installed along with the replacement plug for the Tesla charging cable.
    Great video! I love my 2021 M3 SR+.

    Its nice the long range has the performance boost option but the M3P track mode, superior handling, and brakes alone are worth the additional price imo. Having this level acceleration is potentially dangerous without the Performance brakes and tires.

  • @thomasbihn
    @thomasbihn 2 года назад +1

    The tires that come on the performance are summer tires. The warranty is voided if used below 40F. They will inspect them for signature microcracks that occur when the rubber is hard as is the case when driven this cold. If you buy a performance, I recommend getting 18" compatible rims and winter tires. I got mine from Tire Rack. Also don't forget to get the brakes lubed every spring.

    LR -> hell yes. Why?
    1. Less cost of maintenance
    -> mainly tires
    2. With only 2 grand, it gets acceleration boost
    3. More driving range
    4. It costs 7grand less but still retains tons of fun
    5. better wheel clearance

      Be careful with panels and dash rattling with poor road conditions! I have a Model 3 SR+ in Shanghai with poorly maintained roads. I tried getting the rattles fixed over 5 times in the 2 years I had the car. Each time the rattles returned only after 1 week. So I just give up fixing them and learn to live with it. The rattles is especially bad in summer when the high temperatures somehow make things more loose!

    Good video to which I'd like some of my personal experiences of owning a Model 3 LR.
    - I wouldn't get an EV yet if I couldn't charge at home, because it's such a hassle. I didn't have a chargepoint at first and charging at standard outlet rates (3kw in Europe) is no bueno. So for the first couple of months of ownership I relied solely on level 2 charging at the office and superchargers. Tesla's superchargers are amazing, by far the best in the business in terms of speed, ease of use, and reliability. But you will be sitting there for 20-30 minutes each and every time to get the battery up to a usable level (80% usually) and then you still need to add the drive to and from. Basically any time you need to supercharge it costs you an hour of your time.
    - I can confirm that you really need to take into account the cost of the home charger which can be significant, especially in older houses. It set me back about 4k USD: I had to upgrade my electrics to 3-phase power (so I could install an 11kw charger), and pull a pretty long cable to where I wanted the charge point to be. Then the purchase and installation of course.
    But now I can come home after work, plug it in, and not have to care about charging at all + because I have a managed charge point and a charge card from the company I work for they reimburse every kwh I put into the battery. At these EU prices I'll gladly take it.
    - don't get the performance model unless you plan on using it on track or really don't care about the additional 10k that it costs, contrary to what OP said in his video I do not think it is worth it. Get the LR with the acceleration boost for 2k USD or so. It gives you the best of both worlds: the better driving characteristics and slightly better range of the LR and a 0-60 that is nearly as fast as the performance for a fraction of the cost. So unless you care about the higher top speed, track mode, bigger wheels, and the metal pedals and little spoiler enough to fork over 10 grand I wouldn't go for it.
    - yes on the winter range loss. I see about a 20-30% increase in energy use in winter vs summer and it doesn't even get that cold here (-10C/14f at most which happens rarely).

    • @TaylorMoore4K
      @TaylorMoore4K  Год назад

      Good thoughts! Not disagreeing. Cost for me wasn’t an issue and the cost vs alternatives still lent itself to the Performance being a great deal.

    Really good video! I went through tons of research and back and forth on whether to order the performance or the LR. I ordered one then switched to the other. I ultimately don't regret the Performance at all. The wheels aren't as much of a problem as I initially thought. I went with the Discount Tire wheels and tires for a set of all seasons and they're great but you do have to buy the TPMS sensors through Tesla. The TPMS online won't work for the 2021 models because they require bluetooth. Those are seriously expensive for TPMS.

      I have a December 2018 M3P with white seats. I don’t have dogs or preschool age kids but older kids and teens have ridden in it. My seats look as good as new. I was worried about getting blue stains on the seats from wearing blue jeans but haven’t found that to be a problem at all. Never used any special “protector” spray or anything other than soapy water and a towel to clean them. They look great and it’s really nice on a warm, sunny day not to roast your rump when you get into the car like you would with black seats.
      I’ve gotten a lot of complements on my white seats that I probably wouldn’t have gotten for the much more conventional black colored seats.
      So my advice is get whichever seat you like best.

    Thanks for this information Taylor. I am about to buy my first Tesla and your information will help me greatly. I have two questions for you or your subscribers. The first is about the new CATL batteries. I have gotten conflicting information how soon these batteries will be used and if there are any adverse negative effects compared to the current battery. Also I wonder if anyone has purchased the $2000 turbo boost software upgrade? I was told its not available for the performance version but it actually makes the long range slightly faster.

    • @TaylorMoore4K
      @TaylorMoore4K  3 года назад

      Jackson - I’ll look more into the batteries! But I’ll say this… long range does allow the turn boost which gets you from 4.2 to 3.6 0-60 times. It gets you half of the speed benefit of the performance upgrade!

    One of the things I love the most is the cruise control, I started on the morory at 100km, it latched to the speed of the car in front, as we went off the motory the tesla slowed to a stop and when the light went green and the car in front took off so did the tesla, the a short drive later we came across road works with a 30km sign, The tesla picked up the speed change and slowed to 30km, I would love Waze to work with Tesla Both Waze and the Tesla show the speed zone you are in, with all the ups and downs with the speed zones I just forget on an open road (was it 70km or 80km or 100km) that alone has saved me from stupid tickets, Now I just pay for me being stupid and going to fast

    Production value was excellent but some inaccuracies or omissions. The stats have been covered below regarding with and without rollout for the performance vs long range. After the initial launch, and by about 25 mph, the performance and the LR with boost are pretty much neck and neck. It will likely come down to state of charge between the two.
    Speaking of which, you could have covered how the state of charge impacts your acceleration. Unlike a gas car (ICE) you actually might get quicker times with less fuel in the tank (less weight) the state of charge for electric cars have a significant impact on acceleration times. It does impact 0-60 times a fair amount but at higher speeds the lower state of charge is even more obvious.
    The performance brakes are just the same calipers painted but with a wider rotor. For 99.9% of the population it will never make a difference. IF driving right, you'll be using regen to brake on the street and on the track, the battery level won't hold up for more than a few hot laps at most tracks anyway.
    The current for the Nema 14-50 if using the included charger is capped at 32 amps. So if you compare that to the Tesla wall connector it is a lot slower rate of charge.
    The range difference is almost entirely due to the tires. Put 18's on the performance and it'll get better range. Better range does matter as you never want to take your battery from 100% to 0% to minimize battery degradation. A lot of studies out there but if you can keep it about 20%-70% it will minimize the degradation of the battery. So if you start with less charge, throw in colder weather, hills/wind/rain and the extra 40 miles of the long range can matter.
    Going with the performance model is not worth the extra money over the long range and boost for the vast majority of the people as the cost delta to begin with is 8k at current pricing and then spend 2k to add boost. For 6k more you are basically getting wider rotors and some bolt on baubles. Not a good value. The track mode might be useful for some but Elon said it will be coming to the cars with boost. IF you are considering the Model Y performance, the delta is 5k before you factor in boost. There it makes more sense to go with the performance model and toss the worthless 21" boot anchor wheels. Elon is laughing all the way to the bank when you buy the M3 performance version over the long range.
    The vast majority of the users would be happy with the acceleration of the base long range AWD. Doing 0-60 in 4.2 seconds so effortlessly and no noise is is a lot of fun. Take the 8k you saved over the performance and invest in Tesla stock and you'll get a lot more back in a few years than buying the P.
    In general an excellent overview. First of yours I watched and I'll be back to see more. Keep up the good work.
