Just a little point regarding your infrared thermometer: if you point it at reflective surface (e.g. glass, mirror, metal), you need to adjust the emissivity setting of your thermometer (if it has one) to account for it. Otherwise, you'll be measuring the temperature of the object the surface is reflecting not the surface itself.

@@retiredbitjuggler3471 the truck is not aerodynamic at all, I doubt the wiper being upright makes that much difference. It also means that the windshield doesn’t actually get cleared off as the first sweep brings things down to the base then the second sweep allows it to go back up, rather than the common practice that pushes things out to the side first and off the windshield, then traps the remaining liquid under a bar to prevent it from going back up. Also, having one extremely long wiper means that the edges have very little strength, even normal wipers are a bit too long in some cases.
@@TheNinthGeneration1 You should investigate this for yourself and not let it’s appearance fool you. It is far more aerodynamic than it looks. Don’t take my word for it - do some research for yourself and let me know what you discover.
Thanks! This answers questions I have had about its practicality for one of my main use case considerations for it, the occasional time when I have to deal with bad weather. In the absence of positive or negative hype, it seems to work pretty well, as long as it is driven intelligently. The headlight recess that has garnered so much attention does not look like a deal-breaker.
When you were going down the hill using the brake and it was sliding. I'm curious if you would have just used Regenerative braking would you have slid or would it made it so it maintained control and remained steerable .
I live in the great white north AKA Canada and this is not a problem or flaw of the Cybertruck. All vehicles have snow covered headlights and turn signals in the winter. Solution: we brush the snow off. Simple as that - no biggie. It's in our genetics...clean snow off before drive 🤖
The design of the headlights is as bad as the rest of the car. If you have LEDs you'll have to be smart designing them and not ask a 5 years old what looks cool🤦🏻♂️. Normal lights get fairly warm fast. So it's not really an issue.
Saw it for the first time yesterday! Like a majestic unicorn crossing my path. Naturally I followed it for miles lol. It exceeded my expectations. Liked it before, love it now. Smaller than I thought. Less "ugly". But all around, fantastic.
Yes, but don't forget: Don't leave the dirt on it too long or the steainless steel gets damaged and don't use the car wash because the truck dies AND you loose your warranty. So have fun washing it by hand in below 0°C.
Interesting. So what you’re saying is that people don’t usually clean their cars when they have snow on it before they start driving? I always thought that was mandatory/ only takes like 5mins at most if you have a snow brush/broom
Dude, I don't know how you can be a RUclipsr with all the ignorant comments. Could you imaging having to be around those people in real life. Kudos to you, and I appreciate your content.
Nice video, thanks for the feedback. I ordered my Cybertruck 3/23 so I’m sure I am quite a ways away from getting it haha. Hope you and your family are enjoying yours. Love the front camera, I am hoping they will allow an option for one to add for my S and X plaid 🙏🏼, my S plaid is a 2021 so the sensors are easier IMO but for my 23 X plaid it’s difficult to park close without worries of how close to actually are
Omg the external camera views lt was soo badass! Like some practical effects of car chases frome multimillion budget blockbuster movie when tire was plowing the snow, mud & water by high speed & spinning!!! That was extremely satisfying!
I’m wondering in freezing rain if those doors will be able to open. I gotta really pull on my doors pretty hard to break ice sometimes in the winter to get my truck doors open.
The issue with the headlights isn't about sbow being there when you're parked. It's about when you're driv8ng through th esnow and them being so low. The snow will pick up and cover them as you drive for longer distances.
I saw one of these in person up close for the first time last weekend and I gotta say... it is absolutely ugly af! I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me for free.
Good video, nice to see real world useful tests. I'm kind of sick of the cybertruck flex videos from others showing their wraps and wheels and public reactions.
QUESTION - SALT CORROSION? Curious if you saw salt corrosion as an issue? How often are you washing the truck? The manual reads like it’s a delicate creature compared to how rugged it looks. Lots of immediate cleaning. Thoughts?
This is a long term issue that no one will have a real world answer too yet. The fact is salt can corrode SS, but it takes a long time. imo, a couple washes per year will prevent this, and this SS will last far longer than the rusted out trucks you normally see all over Michigan.
My Rs3 would make it up that "hill" in deeper snow with continental dws's all seasons. I've driven up some pretty steeps roads in it in deeper snow and it just plows. Better than my truck. Never got stuck once & never felt like I was going to be stuck in my Audi and quite a few times in my Dmax i've been stuck..
Yeah, I think a lot of people don't realize that most of your snow driving is going to be in the tires, and snow tires are usually the difference between getting stuck and not. I put snow tires on every winter, no matter what car I'm driving, because I like not getting stuck. I'm sure it's the same with CT.
I would be surprised if the headlights didn't catch snow during a drive. In my Rivian, the headlights aren't even inside of a groove, and the snow just cakes on the front of them (albeit slowly, but typically when it's a wetter snow).
I dont think you can get an accurate read of the stainless steel with an IR probe because the surface has different emissivity, it might be picking up your reflection. If you put a piece of black tape over it then you would get a more accurate read
The wiper did about as poor as I would have thought for the size. Not awful, but not great. When I had my F150 with a bed cover, I had to use a push broom as well to get a majority of it off. Same with the cab roof. Didn't want to be that person blowing all kinds of snow on the road. Now that LED headlights are the norm, they really need some kind of defrost capability. Either integrated to the glass like the mach-e windshield, or some kind of solid state heater+fan inside the fixture. Lastly, stainless steel is quite reflective to IR, so your IR temp gun is going to see whatever the reflection angle is.
@@EyehatePersona5 yes and in some cases it can be beneficial. With a lot of trucks there is very little weight over the rear axil the added weight can give you better traction in the snow. This obviously does not translate the same to EV's
my guess on the bed cover, the bed inside is exposed to 3 sides of warm area during pre conditioning, the window, the bottom (battery underneath maybe providing some heat?) and the driver side warming on the charge port side, so maybe its just a tad warmer under there when fully closed. To add, i imagine it wouldnt be too difficult (big assumption lol) to attach some heating elements inside the bumper (or even on top) right under the headlights somewhere and tie them into the system....sounds like a smart aftermarket product.
Good video. That's how I like to remember Michigan, not the more typical muddy slush. Has anyone actually used Tesla tire chains on their Tesla? I've got 'em for my Model Y but the traction control is so good I can't see every needing to use them. I drove up to the mountains about 6000' to play in the snow. Showing the chains got me past the check point. Up by Mt Baldy I drove into a snow bank to park. My Prius on the other hand.... great car, but even with tire chains on anything slippery it gets stuck. (The last time I had tire chains on the Prius was 2019 it slide down a slope into a snow plow. I hit the plow blade at about 1 mph so no damage. And to be fair, the snow plow (big dump truck) was also stuck. I spent a couple of hours trying to get down the mountain. The guys who helped me were snow plow truck drivers coming off their shift. They all had rear wheel drive cars and they were stuck.
If that snow melts a little in the afternoon and then freezes hard overnight I would bet you would have a frozen tonneau cover. I used to have the problem in North Missouri with my Corvette headlights that would freeze closed and wouldn't open.
if you watch the front bumper closely @10:32 you will see the snow melting which can only means that the front bumper is heated. Maybe it is not powerful enough to get the initial snow melted in 40 min but if you clear it before driving it should be able to keep it snow free.
In a constant spray of slush or heavy snowfall? No way. The presenter mentioned the old incandescent headlights; I distinctly remember THEM freezing over when driving in snow. The CT's headlights, I think, will be a big fail in winter driving.
After watching your channel, I decided to buy a 2021 model 3 new with FSD Then later, after having a ton of problems with the car, we sold it back to Tesla and got the model Y with FSD. Bought it and it was a 2024. As the problems started to get worse with the model Y, we decided to give up on Tesla completely. Now we have a Cadillac CT5 for my daughter for college.. I hate to say this, but I was extremely disappointed in the quality that Tesla puts out, especially comparing it to the Cadillac. There is no comparison. Honestly, once you drive a another vehicle in the same price range there's no comparison that Tesla is a disappointment in my opinion. Just wish I could get my money back for FSD, which at best was dangerous. In some cases, we tried it, and it literally took the car in an uncontrollable situation, even at a slow speed. So we decided to never interact with FSD again after a couple calls. I paid $10,000 for FSD and I am extremely disappointed in the product as many other people I have spoke to. I also have a RUclips channel that is a little smaller than yours so I definitely understand the need for creating content, but I think it's important to let people know how FSD could be dangerous
Those all terrain tires are actually pretty bad on snow compared to something like the Crossclimate2 (which I don't think you can have on such a big wheels)
Hey, thanks a ton for this video! I live in North Idaho which is snowy almost half the year, and I am interested in a Cybertruck. For a guy like me, this video is GOLD! You showed a lot of things I need to see. One question: What is the circular thingy on top of your center screen? Secondly, does Tesla offer snow tires for Cybertruck? That’s a must-have here. No way I could use all-weather tires. Thanks again!!
The circular thing is a phone mount from Jowua (link in description :P) and as of now Tesla doesn't offer snow tires, but you don't have to buy tires from Tesla, you can get them from anywhere as long as they're the right size.
@@DirtyTesla Thanks! I guess I would need to buy a set of Tesla rims, right? If I want to swap wheels twice a year (which is less wear and less work than removing and installing different tires on the same wheels), then I need Tesla’s tire pressure sensors to report tire pressure to the car gauges. Am I right? I am just thinking way ahead if I buy a CT. Thanks.
@1:29 Well, if you have a petrol car and live in any country that has a _real_ winter, you have a heater element in the oil pan _and_ a separate heater inside the car, both of which work on electricity you get from the wall outlet. Exactly like with an electric car, that is. I'd actually go as far as bet that you'll end up using more energy to heat up the EV battery than the engine oil in a petrol car.
Thanks Chris... You can please some of the people some of the time, most of the people most of the time...... etc, great video thanks for sharing I personally would clear any snow off flat or nearly flat surfaces and clear the lights, wind shield etc before driving.
The regen doesn't bring your efficiency down - the fact that you are braking at all brings your efficiency down because you are wasting kinetic energy. The regen just tries to salvage some of that kinetic energy by using it to generate electricity for "re"-use (as in "re"gen).
People asked specifically for preconditioning with the snow on, but tbf I actually don't clean it off with a Tesla... if I know it snowed I just precondition for ~1hr before I leave and there's usually nothing or little left to clean off
some of your temp readings might not be accurate because of the emissivity levels.... they differ from glass/plastic/stainless steel and so on and that gun doesnt have adjustment....even having one with adjustment it could still be way off depending
It is required by law to have your lights and number plates clean. And if you don't clean the snow, it will form ice and when driving high speed it might break off and hit another car, damage it or even kill people. In that case you will be held responsible for the accident because you didn't clean the snow.
Why do you think they were pointless? Not all owners will take the time to do their own measurements, and now you can know which parts are heated and which are not.
All terrain tires are actually pretty bad for snow. Snow tires try and hold onto snow because snow-on-snow traction is pretty high whereas all terrain tires try and get rid of mud because mud-on-mud traction is low
How do you clear those sunken headlights if there's hard ice on them? My ice remover won't fit into that narrow gap; does Tesla give you a tool that actually fits to these specific headlights?
Thank you for the celsius readings
by the way the snow was not at 4deg C but MINUS 4 ...but thanks for the effort...

He thought it was sliding... The camera showed the wheel turning. Electronic abs?
I live in the great white north AKA Canada and this is not a problem or flaw of the Cybertruck. All vehicles have snow covered headlights and turn signals in the winter.
Solution: we brush the snow off. Simple as that - no biggie. It's in our genetics...clean snow off before drive 🤖
The only issue is that they get covered on the road with slush, and the lights don’t warm up enough to melt it off while on, so it is a little issue
LEDs omit heat
Just brush the snow off your vehicle. That would have made the first quarter of the video unnecessary..
That's the gayest thing I've ever read
Hello!
-Quick tip, put winter washer fluid in your car on winters and use that when non-frozen snow is on your windshield
You outdid yourself on this one, great shots, great video.
Great video! The Cybertruck is so cool! Also just so you know, at 18:42, the side camera got partly covered in snow so we couldn't see that well.
Now that’s a proper dirty Cybertruck 🤭
Yes, but don't forget: Don't leave the dirt on it too long or the steainless steel gets damaged and don't use the car wash because the truck dies AND you loose your warranty. So have fun washing it by hand in below 0°C.
A Cybertruck in snow is literally my best dream ❤ Great informative video!
I’m from Florida. Born and raised.
Of course I watched the whole video
Thanks, as usual, Chris!
same 😂
I'm in Georgia, yet here I am.
I'm in Europe, we don't even get the Cybertrucks
Same here
Interesting. So what you’re saying is that people don’t usually clean their cars when they have snow on it before they start driving?
I always thought that was mandatory/ only takes like 5mins at most if you have a snow brush/broom
How many Kilowatts did the precondition use?
I wonder too. There was said it was for free, but it costs some energy. Much less work with all the features, but you must pay the bill ;)
Love the video, personally I love the cybertruck but I know people don’t like it, to each their own right? Thank you for the great content ❤
Dude, I don't know how you can be a RUclipsr with all the ignorant comments. Could you imaging having to be around those people in real life. Kudos to you, and I appreciate your content.
😂 it's crazy. Read some of the ones just in this video
I concur Dr.
Nice video, thanks for the feedback. I ordered my Cybertruck 3/23 so I’m sure I am quite a ways away from getting it haha. Hope you and your family are enjoying yours. Love the front camera, I am hoping they will allow an option for one to add for my S and X plaid 🙏🏼, my S plaid is a 2021 so the sensors are easier IMO but for my 23 X plaid it’s difficult to park close without worries of how close to actually are
Front cam helps immensely for parking, the nose is so weird on this thing. If you're going foundation, I'm sure you'd take delivery this year.
Pretty sure it has an ice breaker mechanism but we'll find out next winter
The way you put your hand up at 15:53 felt like I was playing an FPS shooter
😂😂
The issue with the headlights isn't about sbow being there when you're parked. It's about when you're driv8ng through th esnow and them being so low. The snow will pick up and cover them as you drive for longer distances.
I saw one of these in person up close for the first time last weekend and I gotta say... it is absolutely ugly af! I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me for free.
Ahah, I was thinking exactly the same!😂😂😂
You d refuse a free 100k truck, just because you don’t like how it looks ?
You’re dumber than dumb aren’t you ?
What a fun video! Your videos get better and better. Keep doing what you do.
The fact is salt can corrode SS, but it takes a long time. imo, a couple washes per year will prevent this, and this SS will last far longer than the rusted out trucks you normally see all over Michigan.
its stainless steal there shouldnt be salt corrosion.
Nice Test! 👍
CHRIS - you dropped the snow shovel on the side of the truck - how could you damage the shovel like that /s
Yeah, I think a lot of people don't realize that most of your snow driving is going to be in the tires, and snow tires are usually the difference between getting stuck and not.
I put snow tires on every winter, no matter what car I'm driving, because I like not getting stuck. I'm sure it's the same with CT.
Same. I've had a few experiences that have lead me to put winter tires on any car I drive. Huge difference in braking distance and cornering.
I would be surprised if the headlights didn't catch snow during a drive. In my Rivian, the headlights aren't even inside of a groove, and the snow just cakes on the front of them (albeit slowly, but typically when it's a wetter snow).
My thoughts as well. I'd have to guess that if you're following another vehicle especially, that area is gonna get packed in with snow/slush.
The headlights would easily catch slush and salt. Yuk!
Excellent, informative cold climate video. -Trav in Minnesota
Lastly, stainless steel is quite reflective to IR, so your IR temp gun is going to see whatever the reflection angle is.
is it ok if snow gets into a truck bed
Bro Tesla strongly recommends not removing heavy snow with the wipers because the mechanism cannot handle the weight.
Nice review. It seems ok. In my opinion the styling could use great improvement. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Maybe it is not powerful enough to get the initial snow melted in 40 min but if you clear it before driving it should be able to keep it snow free.
yeah
I've seen other videos where the snow doesn't melt in front of the headlights while driving in snow.
I think that's from runoff, which is fine while parked, but may not work too well while driving
That is runoff water. No way that is heated
In a constant spray of slush or heavy snowfall? No way. The presenter mentioned the old incandescent headlights; I distinctly remember THEM freezing over when driving in snow. The CT's headlights, I think, will be a big fail in winter driving.
Love your work, love your truck. I can’t wait to get one. Cheers from downunder 🇦🇺🇦🇺
After watching your channel, I decided to buy a 2021 model 3 new with FSD
Then later, after having a ton of problems with the car, we sold it back to Tesla and got the model Y with FSD.
What A Nice Looking Tesla Cybertruck You've Got There! And it goes from 0-60 and even further
At 21:39 that symbol is for the heated side mirrors, i was confused too the first time I saw it
Who is paying the electric bill in your house for the preheat time ? How many ways is using, that's informative .
Thanks.
No, there are after market options for wheels and tires. You *can* get all Tesla stuff, but it's typically more expensive.
Great to see it parked and charged outside, as it came from the factory! (What??? No wrap? No coatings? No heated garage for storage?)
The Dirty Tesla way :)
Great video Chris. Good suggestions for heated headlamps and rear camera washer. I hope Tesla adds them soon.
Really a fantastic video about the cyber truck, thanks very much...great job on this video.
Schröedinger's truck: simultaneously the best and the worst truck ever according to the internet.
Good on you for a real-life, honest review. Thank you
Your integrity is like uour virginity. You only get to lose one once. Your good 👍
The heavier your vehicle is, the more important winter tires are. As a life long Canadian, all terrain or all season tires don't cut it.
@12:45 The snow and tailgate are not 3 and 4 celcius, those are negative symbols in front of those numbers.
That big ole air fryer
It mite be intresting to see how all this effects a non plugged in truck's battery. How it effects your overall range.
Thanks Chris... You can please some of the people some of the time, most of the people most of the time...... etc, great video thanks for sharing
I personally would clear any snow off flat or nearly flat surfaces and clear the lights, wind shield etc before driving.
After setting off, if you are driving in heavy sow, it could build up again!
@@harmony3138 I've had some snow build up while driving if it is unusually sticky, but most all of the time the wind blows it off.
The regen doesn't bring your efficiency down - the fact that you are braking at all brings your efficiency down because you are wasting kinetic energy. The regen just tries to salvage some of that kinetic energy by using it to generate electricity for "re"-use (as in "re"gen).
Test the headlights at night with snow on
Most likely going to have to wait until next year but will do
Hey😊 now that’s a proper dirty Tesla 😊
Good tests. Obviously you’d typically brush it off and/or pre-warm and melt 🎉
People asked specifically for preconditioning with the snow on, but tbf I actually don't clean it off with a Tesla... if I know it snowed I just precondition for ~1hr before I leave and there's usually nothing or little left to clean off
@@DirtyTesla first principles automation 😊
some of your temp readings might not be accurate because of the emissivity levels.... they differ from glass/plastic/stainless steel and so on and that gun doesnt have adjustment....even having one with adjustment it could still be way off depending
Guess i need to wake up an hour earlier to do that
😂 come on man I know you're smarter than this
In Connecticut, if you don't clean your snow off your vehicle, they will send an F-16 fighter strike in after you !
I have two concerns about this truck
1 Camera should have self washing solution like in bmw
2 Car relies heavily on the giant screen what if it broke?
You should always clean off the snow on any vehicle before using it, in fact here it’s required by law
By law? Smoke another one lol
@@awsabeandogrescue I'll smoke another one, by law. Then I'll try that some of that wasabean dog barbecue.
Where in Mars??😂😂😅
It is required by law to have your lights and number plates clean.
And if you don't clean the snow, it will form ice and when driving high speed it might break off and hit another car, damage it or even kill people.
In that case you will be held responsible for the accident because you didn't clean the snow.
Well, I recall temps in parts of Canada hitting -36 which is pretty much the same F or C. I'm guessing we'd still be warming up. 12 HOURS LATER...
As pointless as they were, I really enjoyed all the temperature readings. Keep up the bizarre good work!
Why do you think they were pointless? Not all owners will take the time to do their own measurements, and now you can know which parts are heated and which are not.
Is the software designed to prevent it from moving when plugged in and charging?
Yep
All terrain tires are actually pretty bad for snow. Snow tires try and hold onto snow because snow-on-snow traction is pretty high whereas all terrain tires try and get rid of mud because mud-on-mud traction is low
Great video! Thanks for all the info!
If they add infrared LEDs above the lights, then they could be used to melt the snow while pre heating.
How do you clear those sunken headlights if there's hard ice on them? My ice remover won't fit into that narrow gap; does Tesla give you a tool that actually fits to these specific headlights?
