@@VegasFan3000 not really, even good hardware (which I have) can freeze while rendering. Of course, when inserting many formats of different sizes, frames, etc... but other programs do not have this problem. The point is that in Vegas you work much faster than in other programs, and that's why we choose it.

I switched long ago to Voukoder for my rendering plugin, and I never looked back! Voukoder completely solved every hit or miss rendering problem I've ever had. Ain't nothing worse than spending 1.5 hours rendering out a video just to end up with a corrupted/blocky steaming pile of 💩. Vegas used to be solid for me, right up until it wasn't. Voukoder was/is my solution for the Vegas inconsistency, and ya can't beat the price.... Free! Cheers 🍻

for me it was the fact it reduced render times by about 1/3! using magix avc on an hour long video it would take 23 minutes, with voukoder it was 16 minutes. that alone was a god send cause doing the exact same thing on the free da vinci resolve (which uses cpu only) took 45 minutes :/
just hope they enable using more than just 48khz sample rate (youtube allows 96khz for music videos, and youtube live streams are 44.1khz so transmuxing it to 48khz is pointless) and the CoreAudio AAC codec and not just FFMPEG AAC at some point (but i can always render the video alone and use avidemux to insert the audio anyway since it just has a straight-up "Copy" mode that takes no time at all, ha!)

Raising that Playback buffering at 6:49 is causing a delay with your play button on preview. Most people don't realize that its delaying the time they take to hear the audio start to play and its making users switch from Vegas 20 back to 19 and older to avoid it.

Dynamic RAM preview will not afect the Vegas performance because is solely used for Dynamic preview that is created only when you press Shift+B in all Vegas version since Vegas 5.Increasing this will only affect how many seconds of Dynamic preview you can pre buffer in ram.Just try ! For exemple If You have enough RAM and you set this to 60 GB, Vegas will pre buffer about 40 sec in 4k , and if you alocate only 6 GB Vegas will pre buffer only 4-5 sec ( only when you press Shift+B)

    • @sRecollet

Yea I got 32 GB of Ram but keep it way low. Back in the day I used to turn it higher on older PC's and would have an effect or applied to a clip and would constantly use Shift-B. I can't even remember last time I had to use it since I got a decent PC now. i9 processor, 3070ti, 32gb Ram :)

Thank you for this fantastic tutorial and explanations. Your video was a lifesaver. I followed everything you said on the video. At first, I dismissed it since it didn’t help this weird problem I was having with mp4 files I had.
On a lot of the clips, I was getting the random green screen and vertical black bars that would pop randomly on the preview window and I render it. I watched another video that fixed that problem. But later in the day, I ran into another problem. When I rendered the video, the video render fine, but when I played the video on VLC or windows media player, it play for 10 seconds and the video footage freezes, but audio keeps playing. I was rendering as mp4 file. I did render the other file extension and that didn’t give me issues. I was seeing it was mp4 problem.
I uninstall and reinstall Vegas. By doing that it fixed the rendering issue, but I had the green screen and black vertical glitch again. At that point I watch your video. At the part at 2:50 when you explained the check boxes for AVC/HEVC in preferences in I/O tab, my default was only HEVC checked. I was starting to get suspicious and started to toggle those settings. When I unchecked HEVC, I noticed it got worse with green screen and black bars. So that’s when I checked both AVC and HEVC boxes it solved not only the green/black bar problem, but also the rendering issue.
Sorry for the very long post, but thank you so much for the explanation with the settings. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to use it for editing majority the mp4 files I have ❤

If your vegas crashes every 5 minutes then I suggest you update all your hardware drivers. The audio drivers did it for me. Also the tip about upping the dynamic RAM preview max only made my vegas run sluggish because apparently even though I have plenty of RAM the task manager was saying I was using 98% of it. when I downgraded it, vegas would empty out the cache automatically and everything ran fine.

I use the "enter" key to stop and play my footage for editing quickly and changing the playback buffering and track buffering was A MISTAKE!! If you have an issue with the program not stopping or playing the moment you press the "enter" key (or even manually pressing it in the preview window), change this back to the default setting!

Ridiculous that my project playback with FX applied rolls smoothly along, set at preview full in Vegas Pro 18 but slows at transition points, etc. in Vegas Pro 20, even with these settings tweaks applied.... I wish I didn't detest the competitors' workflow so badly, so I could just forget about this application after all of these stressful years. I think a lot of Vegas problems (and editing suites in general) depend on the individual components of your hardware, so stability can be very subjective.
I'd upgrade from V13 though (that is now very old). I'd try and find something like Vegas 17 or 18 on the cheap. Humble Bundle sometimes do great bargain bundles with Magix software that can include Vegas Edit, and Steam sometimes sell Vegas cheaply in their sales.

edit: nevermind, googled it to validate my info and it turns out I was thinking of something different lol (in the bottom paragraph), this is the answer: proxy files are for editing/preview only; it converts your videos into a different format (which is why proxy files are so big) that is easier on resources/more compatible to reduce lag whilst editing on timeline and the preview, BUT when rendering it uses the actual original high quality file. so no, proxy files don't help rendering time, just the interface being sluggish whilst you work on a project if your hardware is struggling or the video you're using is some janky af format. what I found DOES make videos render faster is using VouKoder for the nvidia AVC/nvenc h264 encoder, as it cut my render times by 1/3 by somehow doing black magic to utilise my GPU more when compared to the Magix AVC :P
leaving this here since it was originally what I wrote before fact checking myself:
I believe that's so you can have a proxy server do the render work for you? i.e. a separate computer. it's mostly for when you have multiple people doing multiple projects: you make their workstations good enough to edit on to save cost, and a balls-to-the-wall computer with like 128 cpu cores and 8 GPUs dedicated to just rendering out projects, meaning they can edit then hit render then jump straight onto editing another project with no downtime... at least that's what I'm guessing, might also be for a data storage NAS that's a computer dedicated to storing data using RAID on multiples HDD/SSD for faster access/data loss prevention, aka redundancy (the simplest way raid works is multiple drives have the same data so if one fails you still have backups and/or faster load+access times by reading the data off multiple slow drives simultaneously. or you can add parity drives in other raid configs if you have more than 3 drives to better utilise space)

For some reason SOny Movie Studio 16 does not do a very good job at all load balancing rendering across Ryzen's 32 threads. It's kind of abysmal how littl ei takes advantage of all this processing power on my 7950x. It's 10x faster for sure than on my FX8350... but for the moneyI put into this and the horsepower it has, it should be 30x because it's leaving a lot of horsepower on the table. My video preview ram is 32gb (I have 128gb), using NVENC on a Nvidia 3070 with GPU rendering turned on, with maximum threads on 28 (which works a bit better than setting it on 24, 32, or 48.

That's not what the Dynamic RAM Preview does. You can't assign RAM to an application - that's what the operating system does. The Dynamic RAM Preview is a specific kind of preview (you select a part of the timeline and render it to memory) and all you're doing with the setting is reserve memory for that. Memory that Vegas cannot use for any other purpose. Despite what so many RUclips videos say, this doesn't give you more memory, it takes it away.

Just tried Vegas 20, since it was my favorite video editor I was hopping a very strong software. But sadly it is buggy as soon you make a medium project with only 2 tracks in 4k and 2 audios. It is choppy on preview (even draft on) AND more problematic it is choppy in rendering... Exported xml in Resolve and it's smooth... Game over... I've tried many things but still choppy.

Dynamic ram is ONLY used for pre-rendering, nothing else. It does not impact available ram for the program in any other way. It is only used in building a dynamic ram preview. The program was not scripted to reallocate the DRP for any other function.

Im demoing 20 now, but have little hopes for it and likely going to swtich to Davinci which I really didnt want to do but may well have too anoyingly as 13 isnt even going to work on my new PC build more than likely. Cant have projects and exports crash consitently. I will try all the steps in this video and see. Thanks

Really, I'd like to see less crrp in Vegas, not more. RFix the bugs, and make the controls just a little easier to grab an d move. Everything is so tiny and fiddly to resize, you get down to trying to hit a 4 pixel high zone with your mouse pointer. Its very frustrating.
Free floating Window management is terrible, unless you got 3 monitors which seem like a necessity. One for the time line, one for the preview window, and one for Window File Explorer and your tranitions window.
What I want to know is does it do a better job at making full use of multithreaded multicore processors like my 7950x than Sony Movie Studio 16 would. Movie Studio uses all cores/threads, but it really doesn't do a good job at using all the cores even close to their maximum potenial to speed things up. A few cores are saturated at 100% bottlenecking things while other cores are at 50%, and the vast majority are at 15% (as an example).
