Catelyn found out that the Lannisters are to blame not just for the blonde hair, but also because her sister sent a letter saying that Jon Arryn had been murdered by them. She just connected the strings
8:22 Winter is Coming is basically a warning to all to prepare for hard times. The winter is very harsh in Game of Thrones and since the Starks are in the North, that face the brunt of it, so they know that they must always be prepared for whenever it comes. They apply that outside of just preparing for winter too, of course. And just a bit of trivia, I think it is mentioned somewhere that the Stark house words “Winter is Coming” is the only house words that serves as a warning.
Also, seasons can last a long time, years even, so if it's a long winter you would need to store up food, etc. to last for years. This is why Winterfell and the other Northern castles are very austere compared to the Southern castles. The lords of the North devote their wealth to "treasure" that will ensure the survival of them and their people during the hard times.
@@MTStingray Yep, and Tyrion and Maester Aemon also discussed how many winters Tyrion had seen which was only nine, but "all of them short". They possibly also mentioned the current nine year summer but I can't remember.
Because of the adult nature of the story, the show runners decided to age up the younger characters from the books (ex. Daenerys is only 13). But, in the books at least boys are considered men at 16, and girls are considered of marriageable age when they start menstruation.
Its mentioned offhand in later episodes, but in Game of Thrones, seasons last a long time (as in years of uninterrupted Spring or Summer...or Winter). When GoT starts, Summer has been going on for 10 straight years, which means kids like Arya and Bran “have never known anything else” and this are “summer children.” Winter also lasts for years, and the planet just gets colder as time goes on. To survive winter, you need to prepare and have people help each other. And in the Winter that Old Nan talked about, it lasted so long that men were born, lived, and died without once seeing the sun and even lords froze to deaths in their castles. When Winter comes, you must be ready.
It wasn't the king that killed Lyanna Stark, Ned's sister. They were talking about Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenery's and Visery's brother that is now dead, killing Lyanna. He kidnapped her, and yeah...

And only a few years later, off to war again against the Greyjoys (Theon’s family). Ned’s been through it all

It's good you are taking notes to keep track of new information. Understanding the extended families and their history helps to understand the characters. The Mad King (Aerys), Dany's father, killed Ned's brother and father. Then Rhaegar, Dany's other brother, supposedly killed Ned's sister but they don't know for sure. They just assumed he did
Jaime was head of the King's Guard for Aerys Targaryen the Mad King. His father Tywin was The Hand of the Mad King. Jamie remains in the King's Guard under favored status as the Queen's brother and son of the richest man in the kingdom Tywin Lannister. Yes, he murdered the Mad King when frankly, as he says, no one else would. For me Jack Gleeson's performance as Joffrey is one of the best in GOT.
You asked why Tyrion Lannister doesn't believe in the monsters beyond the Wall... it's because no one really does. Most supernatural things in this world are either quite rare or have faded with time to the point where they became myths. Most people take for fact that dragons used to exist before they went extinct 160ish years ago, and some people claim to have seen magic, but everything else hasn't been seen in centuries or even millennia, so have become mere stories like the one Old Nan was telling Bran. . If someone went to Crete today and came back insisting they'd literally seen the Minotaur, a 2000 year old myth, you'd probably not believe them either no matter how deadly serious they were! . As far as most people are concerned, beyond the Wall is only a bunch of disorganised warring tribal people known as wildlings. Believing in anything else (excluding religion) is often dismissed and mocked as believing in "grumpkins and snarks", basically like believing in the tooth fairy, and it's for this reason that the Night's Watch is also somewhat ridiculed by some people who don't see honour in it - wildlings are the only threat they protect the realm from, and wildlings are barely a threat.
