    Game designer here. Great vid but what is happening to NBA can't be called rubberbanding. The 3-pts swings can happen equally for both teams, they do not favor the losing team. There is no rule connection between being the losing team and going on a hot streak. If it were rubberbanding we would actually see much more close games. What we actually see is bigger discrepancies caused by teams relying more on a strategy that is higher in risk to reward ratio.

      The unpredictability hides a more important theme - the global NBA pool is so large and talented that any G - leaguer can turn into Steph or Kyrie on a good night. You can't predict what happens if you load each scenario with excessive talent. When I was a kid in the '50's you always knew the Celtics would win because the other teams had less talent and no system. There weren't any Serbians, Slovenians, Greeks and Lithuanians to gum up the laws of chance in my day.

    I've always been curious in this 3-point-shooting NBA if there is an additional advantage to shooting threes: the offensive rebounds. Given that the floor is more spaced and the bounce off the missed shot goes farther/higher, I've wondered if just looking at 3pt% doesn't convey the whole advantage if the offense gains an advantage on offensive rebounds, too.
    Thanks for the great video.

    I think it's a coaching problem. Coaches don't change their game plan depending on their lead, compounding on the volatility. If, for instance, a team makes a lot of 3s early on, building up a 20 point lead, the team keeps chucking 3s. That means the other team only needs your team to miss 6 3s and them to make 6 3s and it's a 2 point game. However, if instead the team that built up a 20 point lead focused on scoring high efficiency 2s after building up the lead, then that would put the pressure on the other team. At that point, the other team needs to make 20 more 3s than you make 2s to catch up, which is very unlikely. Sprinkle in the fact that if you start focusing on 2s, the other team is gonna be less focused on defending 3s against you, making your 3s easier, and the lead becomes a lot more insurmountable. If I was coaching and my team was up 20, I'd bench anyone taking a 3 unless they were wide open and had around 40% 3PT percentage.

    • @rickyrico900
      @rickyrico900 15 дней назад +10

      The NBA doesn’t have rubberbanding… it was an unnecessary comparison, I’m not sure why he said that.
      Rubberbanding implies there is some mechanic or rule that helps the team that is behind catch up (better items, faster driving speed).
      His video does demonstrate how shooting more 3s causes higher variance in game results and leads to crazy scoring runs, but that doesn’t = rubberbanding.
      You’re just as likely to see a crazy blowout due to good 3pt shooting, but he didn’t include any info on that. If you google the NBAs blowout problem, it’s part of the same equation with the rise of 3pt shooting.
      In summary: If there’s no objective ADVANTAGE to playing from behind, there’s no rubberbanding.

    • @dylan9013
      @dylan9013 15 дней назад +3

      @@rickyrico900 There is no inherent mechanic to keep games close, but you have to consider this: what does a team down by 20 try to do? Catch up. Teams down will be chucking threes left and right to catch up. In a league almost entirely driven by the three-pointer (and winning games based on threes made), it's entirely plausible to say this is as close to rubberbanding as we'll get in the NBA.

    • @rickyrico900
      @rickyrico900 15 дней назад +10

      @@dylan9013 i know what point he’s trying to make, that’s still not rubberbanding. The result may seem similar in certain games (crazy comebacks), but it’s due to a choice by teams to opt for high risk high reward playstyle in hopes to catch up. Not by any inherent mechanic designed to help them come back.
      It’s like how in boxing you can choose to focus on pure power for a desperation KO in later rounds when you assume you’ll lose on technicals. Might work out, probably won’t, but either way that’s not rubberbanding.
      Not trying to be a jerk, just nitpicking. This is a great video otherwise!

    nah but this playoffs is amazing, not just each game being unbelievable and a thriller, but the storybook matchups, Lakers vs Nuggets running it back, the Heat - Celtics and Mavs - Clippers rivalry returning... I do think the Nuggets will win it though, Jokic is just on another level from everyone else as we have observed these past few years

    To add on to the unpredictable playoffs this year, the Pacers literally just took a 3-1 series lead vs the Bucks

    • @wumbojet
      @wumbojet 16 дней назад +15

      I mean, when the best 2 players are hurt, the third best player is not in good condition, a starter is playing through injury and 2 of those loses were extremely close.
      This I my opinion just looks horrible for the pacers who already had a favorable matchup against the bucks without taking into account the injured players

    • @youngty7174
      @youngty7174 16 дней назад +6

      I mean... Giannis still hasnt played in that series, Dame is injured now, although Khris is playing, he's still not in the best shape of his life. Not that unpredictable for the Pacers eliminate them considering all those factors.

    • @RedVader8766

    I think one of the things that can explain that graph where shooting more threes wasn't a good predictor of wins. It is how the offense is structured. The 'spread' or 'five out' offense moves the defensive rebounders much further from the rim so the famous 'wall' of rebounding the 76ers had with Charles Barkley and Moses Malone playing together, or Mark Eaton and Karl Malone, Dennis Rodman, Lambier, and Hot Rod, etc. they were all closer to the rim so when they boxed out it created a 'pocket' around the rim that almost any miss was theirs for the taking. Now you see players getting as many if not more offensive rebounds as defensive.
