There are still so many things I missed in this video after many more listens to the album. Just going to leave some other thoughts/connections/notes here on things I didn’t mention. (will continue to update)
Firstly, I feel like I did not give justice to Matty Healy as an individual. He is truly a complex and layered human being that is often misunderstood by watching him perform in short clips. I urge you to watch some long-form interviews he has done before you make opinions on him, as the depth of who he is is so much more than meets the eye. The Apple Music Interview with Zane Lowe is incredible. Watch it here: ruclips.net/video/d3ZHGfcENuk/видео.html.
Down Bad - might be a hot take but I think when she says “f you if I can’t have us” I think she is saying that to both the subject of the song and to the fans who are coming after them 😳
Maroon (from Midnights) / loml - in Maroon she states " a real f*ing legacy" in loml she states "it was legendary" - very much points to these songs being tied together and likely about Matty
Guilty as Sin? - I could already do an entirely separate video for this song alone. Like I said, it is about fantasizing about someone who you can't or aren't allowed to be with at the moment, but also SO MUCH MORE.
    - first off, the beat is exactly the same as The Downtown Lights by the Blue Nile aka a song the 1975 has sampled on Love It If We Made It, and Matty has proclaimed is his favorite band
    Lyric callouts:
    - "i dream of cracking locks, throwing my life to the wolves" - she is dreaming about taking the chance on this person and throwing her entire life against the public's judgement.
    - "one slip and falling back into the hedge maze" - this to me means she has ALREADY gone through the hedge maze. I'm thinking about it like getting in the public's good graces, like she has already gone through the public opinion and came out the biggest celebrity of our time and so many people love her. Now, she is saying i'm going to fall BACK INTO the hedge maze because of this person and going to get my life destroyed because of it.
    - "trysts" - callout to The 1975 song "Paris" where this specific word is used
    - "I keep these longings locked IN LOWER CASE INSIDE A VAULT" - lowercase ie: folklore, evermore, and potentially other vault songs she has written about him too; notice how imgonnagetyouback and loml are in lowercase
    - "What if I roll the stone away" - what if she reveals how she truly feels about this person the public despises
    - "they're gonna crucify me anyway" - the public is going to crucify her no matter what she does
    - "if long suffering propriety is what they want from me, they don't know how you've haunted me so stunningly" - if long, suffering appropriateness, politeness, being a good, kind, happy person is what the public wants from me, they don't know how i have been haunted (a word that conveys a recurring instance) by you
    - "am i allowed to cry?" probably one of the best lyrics on the album conveying the entire message of the album. is she not ALLOWED to feel emotions for over someone she has been pining about for years that is a lose lose situation? she doesn't feel like she can be sad because everyone is saying i told you so. there was LITERALLY ISSUED A STATMENT AGAINST HIM saying stay away taylor you arent allowed to associate someone who has been cancelled. is she not allowed to be sad about that?! pick your poison babe - either they can take a chance and throw their lives against the publics judgement or they adhere to what the public wants and never be together - is she not allowed to cry over that?!?!?!
imgonnagetyouback - Somebody Else by The 1975 reference - “say you got somebody else, say I got someone too”
Robin- actually likely about Aaron Dessner’s child!! I rescind my statements of what this song is about in my video haha. Thank you for enlightening me!
Make note of the Spotify scenery for each song! I think those are so important in understanding each songs references.

I am so glad you did this because there are so many people that just don’t believe she had that deep of a connection with Matty. A lot of people think this entire CD is about either Joe or Travis and one or two are about Matty. A lot of people don’t know Matty as an artist. So this is super interesting. I did have some knowledge or inkling some of the songs were about him because he was her release from Joe and he talked to her and it was just very much of a whirlwind romance. The ones who get it get it the ones who have never had that deep of a connection or of a quick spark with a person don’t think it’s possible. I think that’s why a lot of people are like no this is about Joe because they were together for so long. Thank you again for this perspective, I learned so much. Plus, I’m sending your video to so many people so they can learn about the lore and the history of Matty and Taylor.

u should reread the alchemy lyrics bc the song is not about travis. it's ab returning to an ex. asking the ex to drop everyone in their life to be with u aka "clear their roster" hence the sports metaphors. the alchemy is about matty, alchemy itself is a pseudoscience that tries to turn lead to gold, so the song is ab a relationship u want to be real so bad and u want it to be gold but the fact of the matter is that it's lead. the song is saying "i haven't come around in so long" and she literally didn't even know travis yet, the song is about getting back w an ex and the ex in question is matty. "the sign on his heart says it's STILL reserved for me"

I think fortnight is divided in three parts. First Joe, writing songs with her, not talking and not seeing each other. Blue has always been representative of him, then the pinkish color which comes from lover. She tores everything down (what they wrote and had together) gets inside an asylum to get experimented on (this is directed totally to Matty) and then finally when she is on top of the booth with the storm, he reaches her in all of this mess and storm, he grabs her, he has a big ring and she has a bracelet (This is how Travis got to her in the middle of all this heartbreak and disappointed from two guys one that was just absent and cheated emotionally, other that love bombed her then ghosted because he knew how vulnerable she was (they wrote together on midnights) and that's why that clip is on The Alchemy (because it does represent Travis)

The biggest proof that loml is about matty for me is “I thought I was better safe than starry-eyed”
She went on theese “safe” relationships with the “Kens” Calvin, Tom, Joe… because she was scared of the starry eyes(dreams and promises). And I believe Matty Healy is the starry eyed guy because Taylor often describes eyes in her songs, Joe was also blue, Travis is crinkled eye guy… and she gives this evidence on Smallest Man
    “Gazing at me starry-eyed”
Which is scary if we remember:
“Do I really have to chart the constellations in his eyes?” (High infidelity)
“You’re a bandit like me. Eyes full of stars” (Cowboy like me)
“The stars in your eyes shine brighter in Tupelo” (Dorothea)

Specifically about Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus, a few thoughts I have that kill me: that the hologram, considering that he kisses fans on stage and it can be recorded, could also literally be her watching that online. Also for the "bullied you in school", I also think that first verse could be when they first met, and allude to the fact that she met Calvin Harris I think at a party where Matty was also there only a few months later -- so literally he watched it happen.
Additionally in Verse 2, I think that could be an overview of years and years: somewhere in the early years they maybe had a moment to try, but he was having addiction issues and she couldn't handle it (too impaired by youth to know what to do, and she thought she was better off safe than starry eyed) so instead she went through years, and albums, and outfit eras, and lovers -- always trying to, but never quite successfully, outrunning this idea that she left him behind. And all those years and everything she went through in the public eye, he watched it.
And yeah, Verse 3 and the final chorus (which also kills me because in the earlier chorus its "If you want to break my cold heart, Say 'I loved you the way that you were'" which could mean he doesn't love her as she is now, but in this chorus it is "If you want to break my cold hear, say you loved me" so now it would just hurt to know it was real) and outro feel more in the present day like "...and now, after we tried, here we are: still left wondering, still watching eachother from afar. What a legacy, to leave." D-Y-I-N-G, as she said.
Yes I have listened to this song too many times, and yes I have cried. Really the anthem for longing.

I'm so glad I came across this video. As a newer Taylor fan, as in beyond the singles, I have been so frustrated watching reaction videos where Swifties actually read the prologue poem then immediate interpret every song as being about Joe. And me, only knowing limited low, over here literally yelling at my screen as they read lyrics then try to twist their preconceived idea about this being a Joe album to make them fit. The delusion is strong. So, thank you I learned a lot from you, which is what I was looking for.
Also, I didn't know about the 1975 song "Mine," but I think it's funny that she also has one by the same title where she sings and a boy who makes a careful daughter into a rebel.
    I 100% agree about "loml."
I think this album feels so tragic is because the songs come from such a raw place, including the less mature ones (teenage petulance) that we can experience and regret later. I've seen several creators say they could never put out sometime to vulnerable.

Firstly, it was so nice to see TTPD decoded from someone who has some understanding of the 1975 and therefore has deeper understanding of the album as a whole!!
I’ve seen your comment reiterating and correcting/explaining your thoughts of Matty as a person which I think was necessary.
I’ve been a 1975 fan since 2014 and what half the world miss about Matty and understanding him as a person is how he plays a part. The whole Being Funny era and At their very best stage presence was him playing a role - him stumbling around on stage wasn’t him actually drunk, halfway through the show he explains this, the whole thing/era was meant to be like a commentary on right wing men - satire etc, reflected in the album with songs like ‘Looking for somebody to love’. But as we know, most people on the internet have 0 critical thinking skills and took everything literally 😂.
As you said, he’s a complex person with a brilliant mind, and people need to understand that almost EVERYTHING you see about him spread around online and reasons he was cancelled are completely taken out of context - the music speaks the actual truth regarding his political and societal views.
The speak up now thing was the most chronically online, parasocial thing I have ever seen and still makes me cringe to this day - to think you know this person you’ve never met enough to say another person you’ve never met shouldn’t date them because they are all these things you’ve created a narrative about in your own head is just … YIKES. So embarrassing 😳 and I’ve never been happier about her doing anything than when I heard ‘But daddy I love him’ for the first time. Iconic. Sanctimonius judgemental creeps really sums it up.😂
Just watch a few of his sit down interviews and it’s obvious - as you said - the Zane Lowe interview is a great one.
As a fan of them both - they made SO much sense as a couple. It’s a shame things turned out the way they did. What a chaotic moment in time!

@@KarasBookshelf I completely connect ivy to Matty now… “can’t stop you putting roots in my dreamland” and “yeah, it’s a war, it’s a goddamned blaze in the dark and you started it” all point to “guilty as sin?” When things with Joe started falling apart, her mind started pondering the what ifs and Matty invaded her thoughts. I’m not saying M is straight up the reason she and Joe broke up, but she does characterize her friendship with him and the romantic/sexual tension with him as this invasive thing… like Ivy, which gets into cracks and crevices (“you slide into inboxes and slip through bars” their messages to each other) and crawls its way up and over the tops of things and chokes other stuff out. “My house of stone (life with Joe), your ivy grows and now I’m covered in you.” In Ivy she seems to float between addressing Matty (verse 1) and addressing Joe (verse 2)… she’s fighting to be faithful to Joe in spite of their problems, but Matty is stirring something in her she can’t resist.
The whole braid thing on evermore - and the little braids she wore leading up to TTPD - I think represented how Joe, Taylor, and Matty were all woven together for a time as Taylor was torn between being “safe” and being “starry-eyed”.

see I think there are songs that she made talking about cheating, like "Cardigan "I was a cardigan under someone else's bed (Joe neglecting her) until you put me on and told me I was your favorite."
I think she was talking about the fact that she was interested in Matty.... like he was flirting with her while she was with Joe, he was saying all the right things
So that was a forbidden relationship because she was with somebody else.
When she says."it wasn't sexy once it wasn't forbidden.".... IMO she's talking about the fact that HE liked the thrill of getting something he can't have, "you got the girl and made her cry, "
and then once he has it, he becomes bored and he throws it aside.

“Throwing spikes down on the road” I don’t think refers to cigarettes… spikes are what cops sometimes use to stop a speeding felon in a getaway car, which majority of the time means they crash. (Hence why the use different tactics now.). Here she is elaborating on calling out his self-sabotage… he gets in his own way, causes himself to crash and burn. He has always fought for so many minority groups. Yes, he is an idiot sometimes......much of the stage stuff is his act, so remember that. He has always said he is playing a roll........And just think to yourself, if Taylor is such a wonderful caring person.....then she obviously sees something wonderful in Matty too. Because basically he is a really nice guy. That is the real him.........I believe "Oh Caroline" is about Taylor Swift. Thanks for the great video. I wasn't familiar with Matty Healy or The 1975 before last year, but after watching your video now I'm curious to check out some of their music.
You mentioned near the end that some of The Anthology songs don't seem to fit thematically. but for me, the song "Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus" put it together. The lyric " Just say, 'I loved you the way that you were'". It gives me the idea that Taylor feels like Matty loved the old Taylor, not the current Taylor. You know, "The old Taylor can't come to the phone. Why? Cause she's dead." and everything with Kim and Kanye killed the old Taylor, she's no longer the girl Matty fell in love with in 2014. But she can't be that same girl anymore, and that whole situation was a big turning point for her change. So, I think that's why thanK you aIMee and Cassandra are a part of the story. And then, I Hate It Here talks about nostalgia and how it's a trick. How the past isn't as great as we remember it. Maybe Matty idolized the old Taylor and wasn't able to let the new Taylor in to replace that old idea, as in "You turned me into an idea of sorts". Maybe it's a stretch, but I like how it tied everything together for me so I wanted to share, since I think it fits with your breakdown.

I also think she is bringing up Kim because of the Reputation re-record. That drama is intrical to that record. She has vault tracks that are coming out that are in her words 🔥. I think she is trying to exocise her demons in TTPD and create a catharsis that will lead her to hopefully inner peace and some happiness.

Thank you, RUclips algorithm, for bringing me here today! I had actually just before seeing this finally understood what the hell was happening in Fortnight and how it really does set the stage for the whole album. But even that epiphany (along with so many others the last week) didn’t come close to what you’ve opened my mind to in the first 30 minutes. I am not familiar with the 1975’s music and my knowledge of Matty Healy was limited to his intersection with Taylor, so I’ve been doing a deep dive on their history and refathoming songs on folklore, evermore and midnights with the new information in TTPD. I’ve been so pre-occupied with that that I hadn’t given any thought to why Stevie was also a featured player here… and I even knew about the Stevie - Lindsey drama before all this! This is the only TTPD explainer anyone should watch!
I will say though… in Taylor’s poem, she’s not saying she went from “[playing] house to cardiac arrest”… she’s saying she went from “house [arrest] to cardiac arrest”. Referencing the idea of “the slammer” again.

Re: Dopamine racing through his veins:
Matty Healy has been diagnosed with ADHD. People with ADHD have differences in dopamine levels/functioning that often lead to them seeking out experiences and relationships that give them dopamine boosts. They can also hyper fixate on people or things and then rapidly lose interest once the hyper fixation fades.

Something else! As someone who reads WAAAAY too many Matty/t75 interviews…
“You awake with dread, pounding nails in your head” - could be a direct reference to the fact that Matty suffers from chronic migraines and nightmares, something he’s spoken about at length. Also, could be a TBOMAMB reference as he has had breakdowns in the past. And finally the “self-sabotage” throughline…ALSO something he’s spoken about quite openly. He’s scared of intimacy/commitment while also deeply craving it.

Other themes I noticed and really one of the most important is nostalgia. The childhood references; playground, swings, sandlot, playing pretend, high school, etc. The magic woman/heroine vibes throughout. She is a modern day prophetess. Obviously, you discussed the celebrity themes and toxicity of celebrity and fame. Love that line, "you wouldn't last a minute in the asylum that they raised me!" She's mad and crazed. I think she also references Britney Spears with the circus comparisons and ThanK you aImMie which references if you seek me or whatever the song was.

Replace the word Florida with Matty in the chorus. "Matty, one hell of a drug. Matty, can I use you up?" The premise of the song is she's giving herself over to this whirlwind romance and getting a rush out of the chaos
The song starts off with "beating the charges" - perhaps a nod to Fresh Out the Slammer which comes immediately before, she's free and she needs to see him
"And this city reeks of driving myself crazy" - the city is her current situation, the relationship has ended and she's bereft and reeling
"Little did you know your home's really only a town you're just a guest in" - the home being that failed relationship, it's where she's laid down roots but it's not permanent she can only stay there as a guest
"I need to forget, so take me to Florida" - she needs something to distract her from the demise of said relationship, so she runs to Matty
"What a crash, what a rush, fuck me up, Florida" - it's coming upon her suddenly and out of nowhere
"Love left me like this and I don't want to exist, so take me to Florida" - the long term relationship ended and the grief is overwhelming, she needs this distraction
"Tell me I'm despicable, say it's unforgivable" - another nod to the reception of said relationship by fans and the media
"Little did you know your home's really only a town you'll get arrested" - again, a reference to Fresh Out the Slammer. Comparing that previous long term relationship to prison
"Florida, go on, fuck me up" - she knows what she's doing is crazy and could ultimately harm her but she needs to see it through

Same. To me it felt like "he was always gushing over her while she was in a relationship, and once he officially and publicly had her, after she faced criticism for dating him and still stood by his side, he no longer wanted her.
There is an episode in the tv show Scrubs in which the main character is in love with his coworker who's in a relationship and he's desperately in love and so jealous of his coworker's boyfriend and then he confesses his feelings to her and convinces her to break up with her boyfriend because the two already had a history and the feelings never truly stopped. And - literally - the moment she tells him that she chose him and broke up with her boyfriend for him, he realises that he no longer wants her. It's wild and heartbreaking. And Taylor's and Matty's relationship reminded me so much of that plotline.

On Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus…the more I think about it and listen to it, the more it seems like it was written before her and Matty got together in 2023. She said she was writing the album for two years. Could it be that she is pondering how this relationship broke down the first time and how it haunts her - how she is in his orbit while they collaborate on Midnights - how Matty could have said something like “I loved you back then” and her heart is cold because of Joe (losing me - grey, sick) and how hearing that after pining for him all those years broke her heart. She will always wonder…until they finally get together. Then it’s the smallest man who ever lived.

Yes yes yes yes YES YES!!! Finally! Istg I've been slowly losing my mind since last year, watching most people ignore or completely miss what's right in front of them. Once the "I love you" videos happened I fell down a rabbit hole of songs that could be about each other and I realised that they've been in love for almost a decade. Even though they may have loved other people, the "what if" they had has always been stronger and an incredible creative force. Some of their best songs were about each other and that's before TTPD.
As for the album, with the exception of So long London, So Highschool and 2-3 more tracks, it's all about Matty Healy. It's been driving me insane to see ppl completely miss it. They're like "your suit and tie" hmmmm, how weird, what could that mean in this song that is obviously about Joe Alwyn cause who would write such a song about a 2 week situationship. Duuuuude, they've been in love for a decade, it says in black and white "rekindled flames", Matty's aesthetic is literally suit and tie and ppl still deny it. Every single song has references to Matty or the 1975.
Ok I could rant about this for actual hours, hence why this video is so satisfying cause I literally feel like you're inside my head.
I hope you don't get too much hate if the swifties that did what they did last year find this video. Imma sub cause I'm also a maniac about books.

It says pretty clearly that they were completely different people. He’s a hothouse flower, she’s an outdoorsman. He inside, protected, sheltered; she’s outside, rugged, tough. This was amazing and the exact kind of breakdown of the themes, lyrics, 1975 connections I’ve been neeeeeeding. But most of all, your enthusiasm and excitement is so infectious and very fun to watch. 😊
I’m only a casual 1975 listener and only recently more interested in Taylor Swift since last year (though I’ve always loved Style since it came out 😅) but now I’m fully swiftie-pilled haha so this was very interesting to watch. Thank you for all your hard work. It got me thinking, and my knowledge is very limited, but even with my casual listening, I caught something that made my ears perk up.
So in “The Prophecy”, Taylor sings about not wanting money, just someone who wants her company…. And my introduction to the 1975 was “Somebody Else” and there’s a part of that song I’m sure you’re aware, but it says “get someone you love? Get someone you need?” And his response in that song is f*ck that get money, I can’t give you my soul… or something along those lines. Anywho, I haven’t heard anyone mention that and I just had to put it out there if anyone else noticed (I’m sure it’s not a very deep observation but still 😅).
    Great video!

    Just one thought on
"What if I roll the stone away?
    They're gonna crucify me anyway"
She has often used resurrection as a metaphor for coming back after being publicly cancelled. It sounds like she was writing many of these songs (especially Guilty as Sin) even before the situation got puplic, and she knew she would then be "getting crusified". So what if she just "rolled away the stone"(= image of Jesus' resurrection) in advance, as in writing revieling songs, knowing they would be her comeback.

No words to describe how much I love your video. Folklore is still so far above everything else to me, but the story between Taylor and Matty is so compelling and real... you know the greatest loves of all time are over now.
Your passion is expraodinary. Excited to watch all your videos. 🥰

The mental gymnastics I am seeing young woman make to justify/redeem that narcissistic dime store Johnny Rotten/Jack Karouac is amazing. Here’s what it looks like if someone loved you but felt like a burden on your career: he would go out on an apology tour and rehab his reputation for you. He would gladly go along with the PR plan your top notch PR guru lays out. He realizes that the vitriol will die down because it always has. He would anything to make it work just as she was willing to do.
Here is what you DO NOT do if you love someone: manipulate them in their most vulnerable place by love bombing and then ghosting without a word. And on top, there are other woman to whom you’ve done the same. And you did it to a person whom at the very least was a dear friend for at least ten years. Who does that? It doesn’t even matter what Taylor may or may not have done to him. If she was intolerable he should have had the balls to stand in front of her and say so.
He’s repulsive and it has nothing to do with all the shit out there about him. All i need to see is the torture Halsey and TSwiz went through.
He’s not even a good version of his own trope.

This is the 🍵 I was looking for and you took the words out of my mouth. I don’t think we should be excusing the incredibly shitty behavior of a grown ass man who needs to grow tf up and go to therapy. I just… I guess I’m waaay over men like this being repeatedly given the benefit of the doubt after he’s proven time and time again he doesn’t deserve it and being given chance after chance after chance but they never redeem themselves. But maybe that’s just my perspective as a woman who did this with men when I was younger and reached a breaking point and the clarity to realize you can NEVER fix a man (or anyone for that matter). People only change if they want to change and if they have the courage to do the work. I don’t see a man who has ever even thought about getting help or trying to become a better person.
Edit: “he’s not even a good version of his own trope” SENT ME. You’re 💯

Absolutely! It comes down to the concept "he's just not that in to you". Like you said, paraphrasing it, you would rehab your image (Matty) & take whatever actions needed to make it a working relationship.

@@creepypapermultipack how do you know he hasn’t worked on himself ! You are just being one of those judgemental creeps TS talks about . He has been to rehab and talked about being in therapy many times to improve himself . He obviously had something else she wouldn’t have been this crazy about him … so much she has exposed so much that is never going to be unheard of… it’s out there

@lem The “you are better off without me” gambit is one played time and time again by men- particularly those with narcissistic tendencies ( I am not saying he is one. I don’t know him.) It’s also places the blame on the person left behind.
He is now engaged to a woman he had dated prior to his Taylor Swift interlude.
If he had worked on himself, he would not be cool with his friends telling the media that he finds the TTPD of it all “funny because he and Taylor were never serious.” His silence regarding his friends’ and his family’s (his mom and aunt) giving his version of events is very telling.
Just a thought regarding rehab- is one truly a recovering addict if one consumes opioids in pill form rather than shooting up?
He turned out to be just another faux tortured nepo baby “artist” who got what he wanted and discarded her once he got what he wanted.
He can now return to his regularly scheduled programming- making derivative music and pretending he is an iconoclastic genius.

Halsey’s poem gives such shadow daddy vibes about him. I can understand from that standpoint. He is the dark tortured bad boy that we all want. On our pages. In our books. But not in our reality.

Also, Matty suffers from debilitating migraines. People get doctor prescription for migraine pills which are not addictive. It is possible he asked a friend of her friends for a "pill" because he needed it for a migraine and not because he is on drugs. Matty has no problem saying he was an heroin addict, got off and for the last 5 years he says he drinks, smokes weed, and smokes a lot of cigarettes. No hard drugs. But, I would think him being in a very public life with Taylor and no privacy and dealing with Swifties running up to her, and he in therapy for a long time learning boundaries and she hadn't, is not going to be good for an ex heroin user.

I simply ADORE your passion for Taylor and Matty! I’m a pretty big Taylor fan, but have never really gotten into The 1975 (that is changing quickly, btw), but from my very first listen to TTPD and then Anthology, I immediately felt like I understood the “tragic fabric” of their dreaming. I feel just as strongly about the clear and devastating trauma of the truncated love story of these two crazy kids, and have been just as angry at that one particular subset(?) of the fanbase that just had to have their say.
Thank you for all of your passionate, occasionally manic, and GENUINELY empathetic breakdown of this album and the music, love, and pain it covers.

Woah!! So glad RUclips pushed me over here! I’m super new to the Taylor lore and this is such a good deep dive. I had NO idea about the iceberg I was about to crash into! I love your unique perspective of being fans of each of them and a literature nerd. Your energy and passion is amazing and makes me feel right at home as I can get that way too. I also love books… gah! Just love your energy and now I have to subscribe and check out your other videos. I would seriously love to watch you break down every single one of her songs 😂❤🎉
Just…. Fantastic job!! Loved it! Thank you 🙏

One note on Florida, from what my research has told me, the breakup with Joe happened while the eras tour was in Arlington, Texas. I’ve even seen some people pose theories on which individual shows it happened between, based on the set list for each show. The next stop on the tour was in Tampa, Florida, and I’m guessing the travel to there from Arlington was emotional for her, to say the least.
Also, Florence absolutely ATE on this song, which I’ve heard is already being used by the state of Florida in commercials, as well as countless instagram captions by vacationers to the state.

I thought she was saying “it was house [arrest] and then cardiac arrest”- like jail being at home with Joe and then dying when her heart exploded with Matty! Love your analysis and explanation though, I don’t know much about the 1975 so this is super interesting!

I heard an analysis that jail refers to her relationship with Joe and the hospital refers to her relationship with Matty. Listening to the album with that in mind it does seem to fit and the poem confirms that

I seriously love your review of TTPD. I can also tell you’re a reader due to how empathetic you are towards people you don’t personally know.
Now I can be completely wrong, but I thought it was interesting when she used the word “beguiling” in the song Peter. You mentioned Matty is a proclaimed atheist, so I connected the dots of religion to Peter. In the Bible, Peter is one of Jesus’ apostles. In fact, after Christ’s crucifixion, Peter’s faith was so strong that people were dragging their loved ones into the streets for the hope that Peter’s shadow will grace them and bless them. I’m not making any comparisons here, but I thought it was an interesting double meaning with Peter being both Peter Pan and Peter the apostle. Also, the word beguiled appears in the Bible when Adam and Eve are confronted about partaking of the forbidden fruit. Eve says the serpent or SNAKE beguiled her so she ate the fruit. Interesting that religious symbols keep showing up like snake and words like beguile and Peter. Just my thoughts and in no way trying to say TS should be worshipped or treated like a religion

One thing I always notice when listening to Fresh Out The Slammer is how well 'pretty baby' rhythms with Matty Healy in the 'Now, pretty baby, I'm running back home to you' line :D
Thank you so much for this video! That's the best explanation I've seen so far and so many things from TTPD now make sense to me.

Thank you! I've been saying the same things about loml and Peter. Your 1975 knowledge just confirmed that more, I don't know them at all.
Robin I think is not about Matty, the whole lyrics gives child vibes and Aaron Dessner's son is named Robin, he's cowritten this song as well.
And The Manuscript seems (to me) more like a recap of all her old relationships, at least several of them. She says at the end that the manuscript is the last souvenir from her trip to their shores (plural), revisiting those memories.

@@KarasBookshelf31 songs is a lot, I think we will be busy decoding this album for month, if not years. 😂 I also clocked that she mentions the starry eyes/eyed in different songs that we believe are Matty coded. "Was any of it true? Gazing at me starry eyed" (the smallest man...) "I thought I was better safe than starry eyed" (loml, I think) and I think there was a third one, I can't remember right now. I just noticed this specifically after hearing the entire album several times.
