As a Hawaiian resident, I can tell you that it is really nice living here. The weather is good, never too hot or cold and if you can handle it raining a lot it is fantastic. I was born and raised in Florida and that is a wonderful place to live except for 3 months in the summer when it is just too hot and humid. After living here for ten years, I don't think I could stand living on the mainland again.

I lived in upper Puna District for years. If you're seriously thinking of moving to East Hawaii or anywhere on the Big Island there is one extremely important detail no real estate hawker is going to tell you. Health care on Hawaii island is horrible to non-existent and that is no exaggeration. There are almost no emergency care facilities, doctors or surgeons and if you need life saving, acute care you have to survive long enough to fly to Oahu. I came close to dying of blood loss from a bad cut and I was only 30 minutes from Hilo.

I’m happy to hear you made it. That had to be very scary. 😮 I think many of those of us off island realize that specialty care is all in Oahu, but we tend to assume that emergency medicine is up to similar standards as the mainland. I’ve heard from many that is simply not the case.

We lived in HPP several years back. We owned the old house that was moved from the hospital area to HPP. It was built in 1940. We bought it from the people that had it moved to HPP. Since we sold it, it is on the 2nd owner. It was a lovely house and a good size! I wish I had that house up the mountain where we live now.

We want to be north of Hilo, and would love to see something similar for the AG land in that region, if you’re looking for suggestions.

So a realtor friend of mine way way back probably like in the late 90’s said that HPP was a ghetto. I agree with him. Even though I know HPP is one of the most popular. Fees in HPP are high. And you have to pay road fees and there’s still lots of roads there that are unpaved. Which is funny as Ainaloa always had a bad reputation. What I don’t like about Ainaloa is the lot sizes are small and there’s a lot of traffic on da main road as many cut through to Hawaiian acres comin* down or da opposite. You need to mention how dangerous it is trying to com3 out of Orchidland drive , especially on orchidland Drive , and pohaku place and more so making a left. Same is true for making left hand turn out of makuu and paradise drive. I’ll go to makuu to make a left instead of paradise drive and even makuu is very frightening. My son got hit on his motorcycle while driving past makuu.

You did not bring up that it is mostly catchment and solar, a lot of bad roads and HOA and road maintenance rip offs. Some neighborhoods are good some are not. But do like the larger lots. My preference is HI beaches no HOA fees all paved, mail, easy WIFI, access to water and electric. The insuance is higher but it compensates for lower prices. HPP and ANAILOA have become overprices in the last few years.

Nope not true The Hawaiians are moving to the mainlands by the droves because they actually want to experience having electricity , having sewage , (a flushing toilet) having water in their home, Did you know that the Hawaiians set up their home just on any portion of land they're living without electricity they're living without sewage they use a bucket for pee and poo, they're living without running water They go to the street water pumps to get water..... But when they live in America mainland they have a whole lot more or chances at jobs or chances at living a normal life, You need to study Hawaii all the ins and outs of Hawaii before you can understand what you just mentioned there.

They only move because they can not afford it. Foreigners buy up all the homes and rent them out. People wouldnt mind living off grid if they can afford it, now not many good paying jobs. This guy is just being racist. All natives there or on the mainland want their land back. Id poop in a compost bin then pay $55,000 for a septic system.
