I just read an article from Bloomberg stating that some Ukrainian immigrants have actually left 🇨🇦 Canada to go back to 🇺🇦 Ukraine last year (2023) simply because it was cheaper to live in Ukraine, a country actively still at war, than in Canada.

It’s so interesting that there’s so much blame going around. Truth is it is happening around the world. It is the system that we have propped up for decades is the root cause of all of this. The huge problem is Canada is the lack of competition. You can open a shitty restaurant chain like cactus club in vancouver, or a shitty coffee chain like blenz and still be a multi million dollar corparation. Yet you pay insane prices to go to these places. For instance in major cities like Istanbul, London, new york etc yes, you pay crazy prices but you are also eating at the best of the best in the world. The level of mediocrity is insane in Canada that charge insane prices.
This really is 100% because of government regulations/taxes/red tape. Big businesses love these as they can absorb these costs while smaller competators cannot, and it creates a huge barrier to entry for potential new competators. Many critics have voiced breaking up companies that have these huge market shares, but it would only be putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. Canada must cut taxes, re-regulate, and slash spending.

If the government - or particular politicans and administrators in governemnt - didn't personally gain from these kinds of laws and regulations, they would not pass them. The government wields the hammer, not big businesses. I find it odd that you meantion corporate taxes, but to be fair, my comment was focused on the commerse side of things. Although I'm not against cutting corporate taxes, that isn't what I would suggest to address this issue at all. As for taxes, I would cut property taxes. Canada has one of the most highest property taxes in the world and it's on the rise. I'd cut income taxes too. (Yes, these taxes effect the business sector too, as it is difficult for people to start new businesses when their income is bogged-down by high taxes) As for red-tape and regulation, that varies across industires and markets and provinces. But for starters, the cost of business licences should be cut. Also, all rent control laws should be abolished. Rent control disincentivises potential enterpreneurs from constructing new housing, not only causing stortages, but it actually makes it more difficult for affordable housing to be available. In addition, the approval process to build in Canada is way too long, often taking years to complete: this also discourages businesses from building, especially when prices for building materials isn't stable (which is the case today). This is part of the red tape that needs to be slashed. There is much more that needs to be done, but I'm not writing an essay for you.

High property taxes seems more a symptom of high property values as opposed to the actual tax rate. Sure, you could lower the tax rate, but this doesn't solve the bigger issue of ludicrous property valuations, which totally bars young people from owning any property. As for business licenses, aren't these usually 200 - 800$/yr? Is this really that backbreaking? Removing rent control will solve nothing. It is already gone for new buildings in Ontario you know. No developer profits from a glut in housing, only the consumer. It is sad to see how hard it is to get things done in Canada whether that’s housing or new business. It never shocks me when my friends tell me they are moving to the States. As a Kiwi that has lived in canada for the last 18 months. I have found that all of this is true. New Zealand is reasonably expensive but canada is crazy, fruit and vege is outrageous. Phone bills, rent, used cars, all are far more expensive than home. Lucky they have good snow and beautiful views haha. 18 months was enough though, back to NZ
@@tommykarate9397 In a major city like Kitchener Waterlooo and if you played your cards right you could get a bachelor for 500-600 dollars around 10 years ago. My first room rental was 275 a month around the same time( the normal price was closer to 325 or 350 but lower could be found). same room rental is now between 500-800$, same bachelor between 1000-1300 or more. I remember thinking stupidly when I was younger how with prices so cheap that it didn't really matter what I did, I could always afford a place to live. hindsight is 20 20 I suppose.

Highest internet fees in the world. Months long waits for health care. Taxes on everything, even on used cars, food necessities and gov't checks. No bus or public transportation system between cities and often only one airline to service your flight in many areas outside huge metro centers. Minimum 18% tipping expectations at restaurants with already high prices for what you get. Violence and drug addiction, homelessness and fraud all prevalent in your daily experience no matter where you live. Then, winter is coming....

I live in Vancouver and work an unionized job at a corporation. My hours have been cut from 40 hours a week to 24 hours a week. My latest pay cheque after all the deductibles was $743 for two weeks of work. Many of the local employees have been replaced with people from India without PR or citizenships. I am applying for other jobs right now. Submitted like 100+ applications and only heard back from four.

My friend who lived in canada for 14 years. His wife get pregnant and they could not get appointment to see doctor untill 8 to 9 weeks waiting. One time they went for emergency and waiting time was 43 hours. Seriously, Canada have poorest healthcare systen. He clearly said that he did biggest mistake to moved in canada 14 years back. If you thought only Canada got this problem , same problems here in Australia as well - housing affordability , rental crisis etc. If Canadian grocery prices are expensive, Australian ones are even more. Here also 2 super markets (Coles & Woolworths) duopoly and holding all market share and not much competition. Aldi is only a small relief.
I moved to Australia from Canada for 5 years back in my 20’s and it became a second home to me. I love both countries, but it saddens me to see both heading down the same path. I do remember groceries being overall more expensive, but the prices were somewhat more offset by the higher base wages.
And. Don't forget NZ 🇳🇿in the racially divided boat. So far at least we don't have too many of "them"..the immigrants who have no intention of becoming part of our culture.
I moved from Canada to Australia and I find groceries more affordable on average with higher quality produce. I also think eating out is cheaper as you dont have to pay tax and tip on top of the listed price. Accessibility to primary healthcare is also far superior to Canada. I am happy to stay and build my life in Australia.
The Trudeau government is scrambling now to address the housing crisis. In the next few weeks you'll see a myriad of announcements to prep for the election. Don't fall for it. Not saying the Conservatives are any better but I think we are due for some change in one way or another. Myself and most of my friends are in the top 1% of earners and we are nowhere near close to buying houses/apartments in Toronto and Vancouver. Our generation is truly in trouble.

I also knew someone who had cancer and he could have probably lived longer if the healthcare was actually accessible, he had to fly to India to get a surgery that he would have had to wait 6 months to get in Canada. It’s a real shame, I remember when Canada used to be nice, but it’s far from the Canada of today.
Born and raised Canadian and lived 22 years of my life in Canada. Left Canada in 2005 and till this date, zero regrets. I went for an academic internship in 2004 during my Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering to University of Texas Austin. A professor offered me a position in his research lab for master's, so it was more like studying in US free of cost and earning monthly stipend for doing research. I never considered this as permanent move but quality of research I did in US, the opportunities and salary I received I could never imagine that in Canada. I am still in touch with my university friends in Canada work at low wages on obsolete tech stuff, with no innovation at work. Many of them want to move to the US, but for 10+ years they worked on outdated stuff, so they cannot compete with the talent pool in US. Even in 2004, I remember healthcare being bad and I keep hearing stories about how worse it has become. In US, I am covered by a good health insurance, I had surgeries for myself and my kids, and we never had any issues. Honestly, I can no longer trust Canadian healthcare with insane wait times for my kids safety.
Wow, my American mom was refused life saving heart surgery by her longtime HMO she paid into through her employer for decades. They just CHOSE to refuse the surgery and she died. Just an FYI as to what you and your family might expect. Of course unlike Americans, you can choose to move back to Canada when the going gets too tough. And the going will probably end up getting pretty tough.

There are lots of aspects of life that will be generally easier in the US, but health care is not one of them. A quick story: I live in the suburbs of Toronto. Last year I was given a "FIT" test (to screen for colon cancer), which was abnormal so a colonoscopy was warranted, which revealed a malignant mass, which was biopsied, ultimately revealing I had colon cancer. Within a week I had a CT scan to ensure the cancer was only in my colon and, less than three weeks later, surgery (right hemicolectomy). So the total wait time was extremely reasonable. I mentioned this to a very close friend of mine. He is a doctor, practicing in Virginia. He was amazed that I had no symptoms yet it was detected, and all my tests and surgery didn't cost a cent, and that it was taken care of so quickly. Maybe your insurance would have covered you too, but that certainly wouldn't be the case for every barista and Walmart greeter in the US. And it would be hard to get any surgery scheduled faster than that, in any country. By the way, since last week I'm cancer free for one year! WooT!!! Go, Canada ... now if I could be as enthusiastic about everything else up here! I will be retiring in 8 months, and moving stateside.

I'm 20 and I'm doing fine in Toronto. I rent and buy food, clothes and have fun. But starting a family and having even a single child in Canada is nearly impossible. With our salaries, inflation and insane house prices young families will never be able to buy a house. Having a child in a rental sounds so miserable, living at the mercy of the landlord not knowing when they decide to kick you out. After paying for rent, bills, food and other basic stuff you have no money to invest in your child's future :( I don't want to life a pathetic life having 3-4 jobs for my kid to become a cashier with no education. Kids are very expensive here if you want them to have a decent childhood... Starting a family in Canada sounds very bad to me...
Oh ya, and if you get kicked out with your kid you'll have much more struggle finding rent cuz there are landlords (not few) refusing to rent if there are kids, and especially single parents have it harder. I literally read articles about single moms risking losing their kids because they couldn't find housing.

The amount of immigration drives up the demand for basic living expenses, every year he cranks up the carbon tax more, sends billions to Ukraine, announces billions in new funding programs. I've lived in Canada for around 8 yrs, still don't get it, how come a country with 2nd largest land in the world has a housing crisis?? When I just arrived in the country, the cost to own a house was around $400k, now it is about $750k to maybe $900k. I am soooooo regret I didn't get one when it's relatively affordable.
Canada hid its inflation in the housing market for a decade. The economy appeared to be growing, and real wages appeared to be staying in line with the consumer price index, but it was smoke and mirrors. If you removed real estate, GDP was stagnant. Wages were actually falling behind and people getting poorer and poorer without realising it. That’s finally become unsustainable, and inflation is showing up everywhere. And the wages are still stuck. The country is sitting on hugely valuable resources it could develop had it not put so many self-created political barriers in the way, and having indoctrinated their population about it along the way. Separately, The healthcare system is getting worse, consistently ranking 2nd last in the OECD in terms of real results delivered. The biggest problem is that the country’s economy is built on immigration to drive growth, rather than productivity, efficiency, or innovation. The more people you bring in, the more housing you need, but they’re at the point that they can’t keep up and people can hardly afford housing anyways. It’s a recipe for disaster. I left Canada by coincidence, having met someone from another country and moved there. I’m glad I left.
What do you mean by “real estate”? Not enough houses are bing built more so than anything. As for the natural resources that’s actually a problem because it removes investment in tech which is bad for long term growth. Additionally the resource sector is growing. For heath care on performance Canada tanks 8th of performance (ahead of France and the US). The reason housing is more expensive is due to inadequate supply as housing increasingly becomes an investment vehicle instead of a consumable, more so than increased demand. The immigration is not the problem, the lack of investment especially in tech is the problem. Canada need to strengthen intellectual property rights to help fix this, and provide additional incentives.

Same as London, Kleptocracies like Russia and the Middle East transfer wealth out of their own countries and purchase housing, driving the cost up for citizens. Immigration undeniably also increases demand for limited supply. That's a basic reality. More people in, more property needed.
I own a mid sized home in northern BC, share a vehicle with my spouse, work 70+ hours per week (when there is work) in the energy sector, have a second job when I’m home, my spouse works part time. Last year we earned $130,000 combined, took one 4 day vacation and were living paycheque to paycheque. We don’t have drug or shopping addictions, our basic bills cost $7000+ per month, and we’re one of the lucky ones.

We've had bad governments come from both parties. I think a lot of Trudeau voters still vote for him because they want a conservative government even less. Whether that is a good decision is up to others to decide, but plenty of people simply don't want conservatives in power and see any other option as better. At this point I'm just jaded and don't feel there is any party I can put any faith in :'( I love Canada, but just like basically every nation it seems the folks who want to be in government are always the shittiest of the shitty. Interestingly enough, the clip where the girl is complaining about having the rent increased by $7000 is not Trudeau's fault (Liberal government) but Doug Ford's, who's Conservative and the premier (like a governor in the US) of Ontario. He removed the limits on rent increases on properties occupied for the first time after Nov 15 2018. So now, if you want make a few more bucks or just kick someone out just jack the rent so they can't afford it and have to leave (usually you can't just end a lease agreement because you want to but not anymore as you can just increase it to whatever you want). Limits exist for a reason unless you're at the top and want to make more without any regard to people that are struggling. What I'm trying to say is that I don't think the Conservatives will do better than the Liberals, they're just different flavours of garbage. We do need real change, unfortunately I don't think it will happen.

So thankful to the United States for giving me the opportunity to leave Canada and pursue a better life here. I moved in my mid-20s and couldn't be happier with my decision. It always surprises me how few young Canadians consider this but just put up with their worsening living conditions in Canada. @@rigelb9025 it’s all relative. If I was in the lower class, I think Canada makes more sense, if I was in the upper or middle class I think the US makes more sense. Neither country is perfect but it’s about relative tradeoffs.

As an international student going to Vancouver for university back in 2013, it was already bad then. I was astounded how many old buildings in Downtown Vancouver were being demolished in lieu of new land for apartment towers that promised "affordable housing" for the neighbourhood's old displaced residents, students or low income families. And yet these projects would end up being being rented out at a premium. Lots of shiny glass-fronted buildings for the few who could afford a place in them. Eventually I was lucky to find a basement studio south of the city center. After months of struggling to juggle my university expenses, services and rent (and the rain!) I couldn't take it anymore and noped out back to my country to finish my studies. Stupidly enough too, my parents and I got a student loan from my country's government by mortgaging our house to the bank (horrible idea, I regret it every day) to go to study to Canada in the first place. I didn't use it all up, but long story short I'm now paying that loan back monthly. Still: even having to pay a monthly mortgage to recover the family home, it's still WAY cheaper than the total cost of living per month in Vancouver. Hell, it's even cheaper that just the rent by itself - and I'm talking about 2013 prices for a basement studio in the suburbs. Funny how life's plans change, in this case for the better (or at least making it not as bad as it would've been otherwise). My country might be a mess of it's own too, but I'm constantly thankful I'm not in BC anymore - even more so now that it's gotten worse. The city and Canada in general are beautiful, it's just that the "living" there isn't really living at all.
I pay taxes as much as anyone. My salary gets me through the month and I can't have any savings. I live in a 1 room + 1 bathroom apartment that doesn't even have a kitchen. I studied for 3 years through the lockdowns to get a better paying job, but for every single job there are at least 300 applicants. Due to all the stress and economic problems, I recently had a hormonal imbalance and tried to find a doctor. After 14 months and 5 referrals I finally found a specialist. It turns out that my condition "isn't covered" by the government and I had to shell out $500 for every injection despite paying exorbitant taxes for the promise of "free" healthcare. I used to work in another country and used to drive a brand new Nissan Maxima. I thought that migrating to Canada would be mutually beneficial to both myself and the country. It turns out that Canada is a scam. I came here with almost $90,000 and now living paycheck to paycheck. Now I'm looking for every opportunity to escape but can't even afford moving away. Avoid coming here at all costs.
I live in the UK and its a similar situation here. Buying a property (especially in the South) is so hard unless you come from money or have a really good job. Also because people cant buy their own homes, landlords can charge obscene amounts for rent because they know people dont have any alternatives. Add that to the cost of living crisis and you have a lot of people feeling trapped and hopeless

@@2and20from what I’ve seen seems like a lot of frustration amount Canadians that don’t live here and haven’t for a while. I don’t like Trudeau but the economic problems run back long before him. People in the comments saying the left Canada years ago, the overstating the degree of the economic issues, and finally complaining about “social policies” is pretty transparent. There are genuine problems but it’s pretty obvious a lot of people in the comments are intermingling their dislike of social policies of the current government with the economic issues.

I don't think it ruined the economy, it ruined people's living standards but it makes some people a lot of money. Corporations benefit of the cheap labor and make higher profits for investors and real-estate owners (a big part of which are big institutions, not mom & pop) are making huge buck off the exploding demand for housing. The economy is still rolling, but the living standards of normal people are plummeting.

The worse part of Canada is that Canadian homeowners have to renew their mortgages after 5 years on average. Meaning the sub 3% rates that were acquired during the Covid years will balloon to the new 7% to 8% rates. That's wild anxiety for Canadian homeowners! Compared to U.S. sub 3% fixed rates acquired during the Covid years for the entire life of the mortgage.
@Cubaquois If you signed in Canada, your mortgage is only good for 5 years at the current higher rates compared to 5 years ago before mandatory renewal. Who knows what interest rates will be in 2029. Hopefully better than current rates. If you bought in the U.S. 3 to 5 years ago, much better deal at sub 3% interest rates for the full life of the loan. Me included (2.79% interest rate in 2020 for a fixed mortgage for the full 15 years of the life of the loan. No mandatory renewal in 5 years like Canada). Why Canada doesn't have fixed rate mortgages and instead opts for 5 year mandatory renewals is beyond me...

If you choose to pay a house your whole life, thats on you, we decided to have no mortgage at retirement. That's called a plan. If the economy isn't good now for you, imagine in 5 years. Canada was only colonized by the Europeans for one reason: making money. There's not much here otherwise to attract people. It's too cold in most parts of the country for large-scale settlement, which was apparent even to the first French explorers. But there were extractable resources like furs and timber from which wealth could be made. And that's the dark secret behind Canada: it's a place where the profit motive rules all activity. The only reason nobody noticed this was because the original British settlers were less diverse than the groups that settled the States or Australia, and this gave the Dominion a progressive veneer owing to their cultural cohesion. Those British colonists were mostly Quakers, well known for being more sanguine about profit than other Christians, which dovetailed nicely with British investment in Canadian industries. What's changed is that extraction isn't as profitable anymore because most Canadian industries face heavy competition in their main USA and European markets from other countries. Now, the only lucrative extractable resource is consumption within Canada. Why were four million immigrants brought to Canada? Because they would work the same jobs as native Canadians for lower wages, and therefore would part with larger quantities of the profits of their productivity. Why are rents skyrocketing?Because they offer attractive returns for very little investment. Money laundering? Ditto. And oligolistic market capture is also very profitable. Canada isn't a "post-national" state. It is a colonial remnant dominated by a small, incestuous elite of property owners and money fund managers, abetted by a gold digger Canadian government whose stinginess would ashame both Mr. Krabs and Scrooge McDuck. Changing from the Liberals and Justin Trudeau to the Tories and Pierre Poilievre isn't going to change this and will actually make things worse. Canada has an existential problem without an easy solution.

I moved to London, UK. Got a job in finance. Bought a house in Zone 2. Pricey but still affordable. But i can't now move back to Canada because the house to salary ratio is ridiculous.

@@2and20 The housing market in London is as bad as in Toronto and it has the same problem with housing being used for money laundering or bought by foreign investors who don't put it on the market after acquiring it as an asset. I'm a little confused by the ending of the video. The current regime is not seen as "business friendly" while 90% of the video is bashing (rightfully) Canadian government for not protecting consumers against predatory business mergers and consolidation? Also housing crisis is because of single family zoning houses. Open it up to mixed zoning and build more duplexes and condominiums to ease the pressure.
There's definitely a money threshold in Canada you NEED to make to .... have fun and live well. If you're a lifetime renter, or entry level worker.... it doesn't make sense. My family is established from previous happy decades. But even for us there is stagnation and living on savings (many family members moved back to EU, and I'm thinking of it as I'm fluent in many languages there). Imagine people starting new RIGHT NOW.... makes me sad that most Canadians will never had a backyard. Godspeed everyone.

My children were raised in that atmosphere in the 70's and 80's, they roamed the neighborhood along with the rest of the children. All of them are happy, well-adjusted, self-reliant adults today. Not one of them grew up to be a whiney individual thinking the world, or the parents, owes them a living. They are now trying to raise their children in this manner, however, are struggling to do this because of the restrictions put upon society today.

People in Canada used to buy property to provide income after retirement. Many retirees rely on rental income and exert political pressure to maintain prices. There are political lobbies involved in the housing market and they also have no interest in reducing prices or increasing the supply of housing.
This is so interesting. I'm lucky enough to be a Singaporean and just a slightly above-average professional, I contemplated applying for Canadian PR as PR seemed achievable and I wanted a change of environment. But in 2018, I did a research trip to Vancouver and Toronto to scout out the place and talk to friends living there, and realised just from a few anecdotes that with the comparatively higher income taxes, lower salaries and higher housing prices (compared to subsidised public housing in SG, private housing in SG is still out of my reach) that I really was better off where I am. Not to mention the stagnating and less diverse economy, un-progressive tax system would penalise a single working female like me. I thought it would afford a better quality of life for young families due to the maternity leave policy - not sure if I was on the mark for that

You can blame Trudeau but this is happening all over the world. The problem is that central banks target a certain amount of inflation (usually 2%). However in their inflation calculations they don't include the price for housing. So they are not steering the economy on true inflation. Resulting in a decade of very low interest rates which resulted in souring housing prices.

I've lived in Canada my whole life and I've never been hurting so bad. Example... I got my auto renewal and it more than doubled! $300/month for a Honda CRV!! I've got air tags on it, a club on the steering wheel and it's parked in my garage as I work from home. Unbelievable!!
While many points in this video strike true, most are exaggareted or outdated. I would take this with a grain of salt. I live in Vancouver, make far less than six figures and purchased an appropriately sized home 4 years ago. It will become more difficult with a higher rate down the line, but I also don't expect to live above my means and maintain a status for the Jones' while covering my bills and growing wealth when I can. 50% of the issues people experience are self-inflicted, barring unavoidable health issues, etc. If an immigrant like me can do it, surely people who grew up here, who have family and maybe even a partner, can learn to navigate this market successfully.
My girlfriend recently moved to Toronto, in doing so, she needed to put 6 months rent upfront. Almost $20,000 out of pocket between her and her roommate. What's worse is that the upfront payment is only about 3% of what a comparable condo is being listed for, so with half an average years salary to boot, they still couldn't buy. Safe to say we are leaving as soon as possible.

She was moving from another province and landlords are scared shitless there because there’s an epidemic around people not paying their rent. With no renting history, they demanded an up front payment. She was also battling with three other potential tenants and needed to outbid them as well. Do you live in a metropolitan Canadian city? If you do, you should know how dire things are here.
Landlords are legally not allowed to ask for more than first and last month rent in Ontario. Idk what landlord they found but that's pretty shady. Some landlords skirt the rules while attracting immigrants who aren't as confident with the system. Sorry to hear that happened to your girlfriend

It's really getting ridiculous - I'm making 6 figures, and was living comfortably until 2018. Now I have to pinch every single penny. One thing that changed is I had my first-born. But it should not be this expensive to raise of family of 1 child. It's getting ridiculous. We've been considering emigrating elsewhere. Having done everything - from going to university, making sacrifices to afford a first home - yet we're still regressing in life. This shouldn't be. I thought Canada was heaven on earth - but that view has changed, as it's getting more difficult to survive, forget thrive.

It doesn't take much to convince them to vote for liberals. Unlike Americans, Canadians think they are "too cool" or "better than Americans"- they think that this quality in itself is sufficient to take care of their poor economy, inflation, and housing needs. What I also find, is that Americans are more direct in their communication rather than trying to be PC all the time, are more productive, and over all hard working. You are correct! Add to that the fact that in Canada freedom of speech is increasingly illusory, and has never existed to the extent that it has in the USA. Canadians vote for the Left on average 60% in every federal election. Canada is NO LONGER a safe place to invest your money. In 2022, Justin Trudeau showed that a Canadian government can seize your bank account and freeze your assets, simply for holding views that the government doesn't approve of. Canadians have also showed themselves to be the world's stupidest voters, putting into office Justin Trudeau three times in a row. Trudeau has gotten his biggest support in the big urban areas, which says something about the intelligence of the big urban areas.
It's not that everyone wants to live there. For Canadian citizens who are only Canadian citizens, they might not have a country they can go to where a job with a decent salary and a work visa is available to them.

It gets worse. On Vancouver Island, in Parksville, which is a town ,mid island of 10,000 people , an average home is $900,000! On Average. So, if a couple has $200,000 to put down on that home -a substantial amount, their mortgage is $700,000 . IF you qualify. Interest rates have skyrocketed in the past 3 years and people simply can't afford to live. A big house in a good neighborhood, in Calgary in the late eighties was $400,000. That same home today is $1,750,000. Depressing and completely out of reach for most people.
I've lived in Canada for sixty years and I have to say that I do not recognize the country as described here. This is still a great country, but inflation (like in the rest of the Western world) has gotten out of control. Corporate control of our politics has ruined the chances of young people to get ahead, including my own children. A housing crash will be needed to reset prices and rent controls need to be reinstated. Trudeau, whom I'm no fan of, has made things worse, but it is exactly the same in the UK and Germany. The UK has had a Conservative government since 2015. All of our political leaders are following the same playbook. We need new ideas. Without them working people will continue to struggle.

Why would I start an already risky startup when the odds are further stacked against me if I started it in Canada? Things like the carbon tax also mean that employee wages would have to increase exponentially just to offset their further increased cost of living, not to mention the fact that they would be getting hammered by sky-high rent due to reckless amounts of immigration… all done by the Liberal government. Yeah, no thanks. Also, I’d rather live here in Eastern Europe, where I don’t have to worry about crazed Fentanyl addicts roaming the streets.

This is a problem with the upfront costs of builds. If luxury only costs like 100k more to make in a building that's gonna be selling units for close to a mil anyway, it makes no sense to try and save that much on the build. We need to see more supply in general and a higher participation in construction before it makes any sense for condos to build lower end units. I guess the government could enforce it, but idk what that'd even look like.

Born and raised in Canada. The rising cost of living is just depressing and I’ve basically given up on starting a family because of it here in Vancouver. I know that in order to move out of my parents house, I’d have to get a full time job, eat instant noodles only, and have at least five roommates in order to continue living here. Minimum wage in BC is $16/hr changing to $17/hr but living wage is at least $26/hr last I checked. It’s so sad because I love it here but it seems just seems impossible to be hopeful .
Lol these brainlets are gonna attempt to increase minimum wage, but it wont do anything. Itl just make the cost of living worse LOL. The real reason is zoning laws and bureaucracy making it impossible to simply build more houses.

We are a software engineer and a graphic designer. We couldn't afford a home in Canada, and were facing a life of escalating poverty. We left Canada two years ago to start a new life in El Salvador. It has been the best decision of our lives.

It’s so interesting that there’s so much blame going around. Truth is it is happening around the world. It is the system that we have propped up for decades is the root cause of all of this. The huge problem is Canada is the lack of competition. You can open a shitty restaurant chain like cactus club in vancouver, or a shitty coffee chain like blenz and still be a multi million dollar corparation. Yet you pay insane prices to go to these places. For instance in major cities like Istanbul, London, new york etc yes, you pay crazy prices but you are also eating at the best of the best in the world. The level of mediocrity is insane in Canada that charge insane prices.
This really is 100% because of government regulations/taxes/red tape. Big businesses love these as they can absorb these costs while smaller competators cannot, and it creates a huge barrier to entry for potential new competators. Many critics have voiced breaking up companies that have these huge market shares, but it would only be putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. Canada must cut taxes, re-regulate, and slash spending.

If the government - or particular politicans and administrators in governemnt - didn't personally gain from these kinds of laws and regulations, they would not pass them. The government wields the hammer, not big businesses.
I find it odd that you meantion corporate taxes, but to be fair, my comment was focused on the commerse side of things. Although I'm not against cutting corporate taxes, that isn't what I would suggest to address this issue at all.
As for taxes, I would cut property taxes. Canada has one of the most highest property taxes in the world and it's on the rise. I'd cut income taxes too. (Yes, these taxes effect the business sector too, as it is difficult for people to start new businesses when their income is bogged-down by high taxes) As for red-tape and regulation, that varies across industires and markets and provinces. But for starters, the cost of business licences should be cut. Also, all rent control laws should be abolished. Rent control disincentivises potential enterpreneurs from constructing new housing, not only causing stortages, but it actually makes it more difficult for affordable housing to be available. In addition, the approval process to build in Canada is way too long, often taking years to complete: this also discourages businesses from building, especially when prices for building materials isn't stable (which is the case today). This is part of the red tape that needs to be slashed.
There is much more that needs to be done, but I'm not writing an essay for you.

High property taxes seems more a symptom of high property values as opposed to the actual tax rate. Sure, you could lower the tax rate, but this doesn't solve the bigger issue of ludicrous property valuations, which totally bars young people from owning any property.
As for business licenses, aren't these usually 200 - 800$/yr? Is this really that backbreaking?
Removing rent control will solve nothing. It is already gone for new buildings in Ontario you know. No developer profits from a glut in housing, only the consumer. It is the government that needs to build affordable housing, as was done in the post-war period
I do agree the approval process is kinda nuts in some municipalities. Cities also have horrible single family zoning rules that needs to change.

It is sad to see how hard it is to get things done in Canada whether that’s housing or new business. It never shocks me when my friends tell me they are moving to the States. The cost of living is lower and salaries are much more competitive.

As a Kiwi that has lived in canada for the last 18 months. I have found that all of this is true. New Zealand is reasonably expensive but canada is crazy, fruit and vege is outrageous. Phone bills, rent, used cars, all are far more expensive than home. Lucky they have good snow and beautiful views haha. 18 months was enough though, back to NZ

@@tommykarate9397 In a major city like Kitchener Waterlooo and if you played your cards right you could get a bachelor for 500-600 dollars around 10 years ago. My first room rental was 275 a month around the same time( the normal price was closer to 325 or 350 but lower could be found). same room rental is now between 500-800$, same bachelor between 1000-1300 or more.
I remember thinking stupidly when I was younger how with prices so cheap that it didn't really matter what I did, I could always afford a place to live. hindsight is 20 20 I suppose.

No bus or public transportation system between cities and often only one airline to service your flight in many areas outside huge metro centers. Minimum 18% tipping expectations at restaurants with already high prices for what you get. Violence and drug addiction, homelessness and fraud all prevalent in your daily experience no matter where you live. Then, winter is coming....

I live in Vancouver and work an unionized job at a corporation. My hours have been cut from 40 hours a week to 24 hours a week. My latest pay cheque after all the deductibles was $743 for two weeks of work. Many of the local employees have been replaced with people from India without PR or citizenships.
I am applying for other jobs right now. Submitted like 100+ applications and only heard back from four.

My friend who lived in canada for 14 years. His wife get pregnant and they could not get appointment to see doctor untill 8 to 9 weeks waiting. One time they went for emergency and waiting time was 43 hours. Seriously, Canada have poorest healthcare systen. He clearly said that he did biggest mistake to moved in canada 14 years back. He finally planning to move out this december and leave canada parmenantaly.

If you thought only Canada got this problem , same problems here in Australia as well - housing affordability , rental crisis etc. If Canadian grocery prices are expensive, Australian ones are even more. Here also 2 super markets (Coles & Woolworths) duopoly and holding all market share and not much competition. Aldi is only a small relief.
I moved to Australia from Canada for 5 years back in my 20’s and it became a second home to me.
I love both countries, but it saddens me to see both heading down the same path.
I do remember groceries being overall more expensive, but the prices were somewhat more offset by the higher base wages.

I moved from Canada to Australia and I find groceries more affordable on average with higher quality produce. I also think eating out is cheaper as you dont have to pay tax and tip on top of the listed price. Accessibility to primary healthcare is also far superior to Canada. I am happy to stay and build my life in Australia.

I also knew someone who had cancer and he could have probably lived longer if the healthcare was actually accessible, he had to fly to India to get a surgery that he would have had to wait 6 months to get in Canada. It’s a real shame, I remember when Canada used to be nice, but it’s far from the Canada of today.
Born and raised Canadian and lived 22 years of my life in Canada. Left Canada in 2005 and till this date, zero regrets. I went for an academic internship in 2004 during my Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering to University of Texas Austin. A professor offered me a position in his research lab for master's, so it was more like studying in US free of cost and earning monthly stipend for doing research.
I never considered this as permanent move but quality of research I did in US, the opportunities and salary I received I could never imagine that in Canada. I am still in touch with my university friends in Canada work at low wages on obsolete tech stuff, with no innovation at work. Many of them want to move to the US, but for 10+ years they worked on outdated stuff, so they cannot compete with the talent pool in US. Even in 2004, I remember healthcare being bad and I keep hearing stories about how worse it has become. In US, I am covered by a good health insurance, I had surgeries for myself and my kids, and we never had any issues. Honestly, I can no longer trust Canadian healthcare with insane wait times for my kids safety.
Wow, my American mom was refused life saving heart surgery by her longtime HMO she paid into through her employer for decades. They just CHOSE to refuse the surgery and she died. Just an FYI as to what you and your family might expect. Of course unlike Americans, you can choose to move back to Canada when the going gets too tough. And the going will probably end up getting pretty tough.
Speaking of health care and kids, there was obgyn in Northyork hospital charged for endangering his patiences by induce labour without consent during the weekend for extra pay. That’s canadian health care in nutshell.

There are lots of aspects of life that will be generally easier in the US, but health care is not one of them. A quick story: I live in the suburbs of Toronto. Last year I was given a "FIT" test (to screen for colon cancer), which was abnormal so a colonoscopy was warranted, which revealed a malignant mass, which was biopsied, ultimately revealing I had colon cancer. Within a week I had a CT scan to ensure the cancer was only in my colon and, less than three weeks later, surgery (right hemicolectomy). So the total wait time was extremely reasonable.
I mentioned this to a very close friend of mine. He is a doctor, practicing in Virginia. He was amazed that I had no symptoms yet it was detected, and all my tests and surgery didn't cost a cent, and that it was taken care of so quickly. Maybe your insurance would have covered you too, but that certainly wouldn't be the case for every barista and Walmart greeter in the US. And it would be hard to get any surgery scheduled faster than that, in any country.
By the way, since last week I'm cancer free for one year! WooT!!! Go, Canada ... now if I could be as enthusiastic about everything else up here! I will be retiring in 8 months, and moving stateside.

I'm 20 and I'm doing fine in Toronto. I rent and buy food, clothes and have fun. But starting a family and having even a single child in Canada is nearly impossible. With our salaries, inflation and insane house prices young families will never be able to buy a house. Having a child in a rental sounds so miserable, living at the mercy of the landlord not knowing when they decide to kick you out. After paying for rent, bills, food and other basic stuff you have no money to invest in your child's future :( I don't want to life a pathetic life having 3-4 jobs for my kid to become a cashier with no education. Kids are very expensive here if you want them to have a decent childhood... Starting a family in Canada sounds very bad to me...
Oh ya, and if you get kicked out with your kid you'll have much more struggle finding rent cuz there are landlords (not few) refusing to rent if there are kids, and especially single parents have it harder. I literally read articles about single moms risking losing their kids because they couldn't find housing.

I've lived in Canada for around 8 yrs, still don't get it, how come a country with 2nd largest land in the world has a housing crisis?? When I just arrived in the country, the cost to own a house was around $400k, now it is about $750k to maybe $900k. I am soooooo regret I didn't get one when it's relatively affordable.
Canada hid its inflation in the housing market for a decade. The economy appeared to be growing, and real wages appeared to be staying in line with the consumer price index, but it was smoke and mirrors. If you removed real estate, GDP was stagnant. Wages were actually falling behind and people getting poorer and poorer without realising it. That’s finally become unsustainable, and inflation is showing up everywhere. And the wages are still stuck. Separately, The healthcare system is getting worse, consistently ranking 2nd last in the OECD in terms of real results delivered. The biggest problem is that the country’s economy is built on immigration to drive growth, rather than productivity, efficiency, or innovation. The more people you bring in, the more housing you need, but they’re at the point that they can’t keep up and people can hardly afford housing anyways. It’s a recipe for disaster. I left Canada by coincidence, having met someone from another country and moved there. I’m glad I left.

What do you mean by “real estate”? Not enough houses are bing built more so than anything. As for the natural resources that’s actually a problem because it removes investment in tech which is bad for long term growth. Additionally the resource sector is growing. For heath care on performance Canada tanks 8th of performance (ahead of France and the US). The reason housing is more expensive is due to inadequate supply as housing increasingly becomes an investment vehicle instead of a consumable, more so than increased demand. The immigration is not the problem, the lack of investment especially in tech is the problem. Canada need to strengthen intellectual property rights to help fix this, and provide additional incentives.

We've had bad governments come from both parties. I think a lot of Trudeau voters still vote for him because they want a conservative government even less. Interestingly enough, the clip where the girl is complaining about having the rent increased by $7000 is not Trudeau's fault (Liberal government) but Doug Ford's, who's Conservative and the premier (like a governor in the US) of Ontario. He removed the limits on rent increases on properties occupied for the first time after Nov 15 2018. So now, if you want make a few more bucks or just kick someone out just jack the rent so they can't afford it and have to leave (usually you can't just end a lease agreement because you want to but not anymore as you can just increase it to whatever you want). Limits exist for a reason unless you're at the top and want to make more without any regard to people that are struggling.
What I'm trying to say is that I don't think the Conservatives will do better than the Liberals, they're just different flavours of garbage. We do need real change, unfortunately I don't think it will happen.

So thankful to the United States for giving me the opportunity to leave Canada and pursue a better life here. I moved in my mid-20s and couldn't be happier with my decision. It always surprises me how few young Canadians consider this but just put up with their worsening living conditions in Canada. I hope a new government can come in a turn things around for my friends and family still living there.

As an international student going to Vancouver for university back in 2013, it was already bad then. I was astounded how many old buildings in Downtown Vancouver were being demolished in lieu of new land for apartment towers that promised "affordable housing" for the neighbourhood's old displaced residents, students or low income families. And yet these projects would end up being being rented out at a premium. Lots of shiny glass-fronted buildings for the few who could afford a place in them. Eventually I was lucky to find a basement studio south of the city center. After months of struggling to juggle my university expenses, services and rent (and the rain!) I couldn't take it anymore and noped out back to my country to finish my studies.
Stupidly enough too, my parents and I got a student loan from my country's government by mortgaging our house to the bank (horrible idea, I regret it every day) to go to study to Canada in the first place. I didn't use it all up, but long story short I'm now paying that loan back monthly. Still: even having to pay a monthly mortgage to recover the family home, it's still WAY cheaper than the total cost of living per month in Vancouver. Hell, it's even cheaper that just the rent by itself - and I'm talking about 2013 prices for a basement studio in the suburbs. Funny how life's plans change, in this case for the better (or at least making it not as bad as it would've been otherwise). My country might be a mess of it's own too, but I'm constantly thankful I'm not in BC anymore - even more so now that it's gotten worse. The city and Canada in general are beautiful, it's just that the "living" there isn't really living at all.

I pay taxes as much as anyone. My salary gets me through the month and I can't have any savings. I live in a 1 room + 1 bathroom apartment that doesn't even have a kitchen. I studied for 3 years through the lockdowns to get a better paying job, but for every single job there are at least 300 applicants. Due to all the stress and economic problems, I recently had a hormonal imbalance and tried to find a doctor. After 14 months and 5 referrals I finally found a specialist. It turns out that my condition "isn't covered" by the government and I had to shell out $500 for every injection despite paying exorbitant taxes for the promise of "free" healthcare. I used to work in another country and used to drive a brand new Nissan Maxima. I thought that migrating to Canada would be mutually beneficial to both myself and the country. It turns out that Canada is a scam. I came here with almost $90,000 and now living paycheck to paycheck. Now I'm looking for every opportunity to escape but can't even afford moving away. Avoid coming here at all costs.
I live in the UK and its a similar situation here. Buying a property (especially in the South) is so hard unless you come from money or have a really good job.
Also because people cant buy their own homes, landlords can charge obscene amounts for rent because they know people dont have any alternatives. Add that to the cost of living crisis and you have a lot of people feeling trapped and hopeless

@Cubaquois If you signed in Canada, your mortgage is only good for 5 years at the current higher rates compared to 5 years ago before mandatory renewal. Who knows what interest rates will be in 2029. Hopefully better than current rates. If you bought in the U.S. 3 to 5 years ago, much better deal at sub 3% interest rates for the full life of the loan. Me included (2.79% interest rate in 2020 for a fixed mortgage for the full 15 years of the life of the loan. No mandatory renewal in 5 years like Canada).
Why Canada doesn't have fixed rate mortgages and instead opts for 5 year mandatory renewals is beyond me...

Canada was only colonized by the Europeans for one reason: making money. There's not much here otherwise to attract people. It's too cold in most parts of the country for large-scale settlement, which was apparent even to the first French explorers. But there were extractable resources like furs and timber from which wealth could be made.
And that's the dark secret behind Canada: it's a place where the profit motive rules all activity. The only reason nobody noticed this was because the original British settlers were less diverse than the groups that settled the States or Australia, and this gave the Dominion a progressive veneer owing to their cultural cohesion. Those British colonists were mostly Quakers, well known for being more sanguine about profit than other Christians, which dovetailed nicely with British investment in Canadian industries.
What's changed is that extraction isn't as profitable anymore because most Canadian industries face heavy competition in their main USA and European markets from other countries. Now, the only lucrative extractable resource is consumption within Canada.
Why were four million immigrants brought to Canada? Because they would work the same jobs as native Canadians for lower wages, and therefore would part with larger quantities of the profits of their productivity. Why are rents skyrocketing?Because they offer attractive returns for very little investment. Money laundering? Ditto. And oligolistic market capture is also very profitable. Canada isn't a "post-national" state. It is a colonial remnant dominated by a small, incestuous elite of property owners and money fund managers, abetted by a gold digger Canadian government whose stinginess would ashame both Mr. Krabs and Scrooge McDuck. Changing from the Liberals and Justin Trudeau to the Tories and Pierre Poilievre isn't going to change this and will actually make things worse. Canada has an existential problem without an easy solution.

There's definitely a money threshold in Canada you NEED to make to .... have fun and live well. If you're a lifetime renter, or entry level worker.... it doesn't make sense. My family is established from previous happy decades. But even for us there is stagnation and living on savings (many family members moved back to EU, and I'm thinking of it as I'm fluent in many languages there). People in Canada used to buy property to provide income after retirement. Many retirees rely on rental income and exert political pressure to maintain prices. There are political lobbies involved in the housing market and they also have no interest in reducing prices or increasing the supply of housing.
This is so interesting. I'm lucky enough to be a Singaporean and just a slightly above-average professional, I contemplated applying for Canadian PR as PR seemed achievable and I wanted a change of environment. But in 2018, I did a research trip to Vancouver and Toronto to scout out the place and talk to friends living there, and realised just from a few anecdotes that with the comparatively higher income taxes, lower salaries and higher housing prices (compared to subsidised public housing in SG, private housing in SG is still out of my reach) that I really was better off where I am. Not to mention the stagnating and less diverse economy, un-progressive tax system would penalise a single working female like me. I thought it would afford a better quality of life for young families due to the maternity leave policy - not sure if I was on the mark for that

I've lived in Canada my whole life and I've never been hurting so bad. Example... I got my auto renewal and it more than doubled! $300/month for a Honda CRV!! I've got air tags on it, a club on the steering wheel and it's parked in my garage as I work from home. Unbelievable!!

While many points in this video strike true, most are exaggareted or outdated. I would take this with a grain of salt. I live in Vancouver, make far less than six figures and purchased an appropriately sized home 4 years ago. It will become more difficult with a higher rate down the line, but I also don't expect to live above my means and maintain a status for the Jones' while covering my bills and growing wealth when I can. 50% of the issues people experience are self-inflicted, barring unavoidable health issues, etc. If an immigrant like me can do it, surely people who grew up here, who have family and maybe even a partner, can learn to navigate this market successfully.
My girlfriend recently moved to Toronto, in doing so, she needed to put 6 months rent upfront. Almost $20,000 out of pocket between her and her roommate. What's worse is that the upfront payment is only about 3% of what a comparable condo is being listed for, so with half an average years salary to boot, they still couldn't buy.
Safe to say we are leaving as soon as possible.

She was moving from another province and landlords are scared shitless there because there’s an epidemic around people not paying their rent. With no renting history, they demanded an up front payment.
She was also battling with three other potential tenants and needed to outbid them as well.

Landlords are legally not allowed to ask for more than first and last month rent in Ontario. Idk what landlord they found but that's pretty shady. Some landlords skirt the rules while attracting immigrants who aren't as confident with the system. Sorry to hear that happened to your girlfriend

It's really getting ridiculous - I'm making 6 figures, and was living comfortably until 2018. Now I have to pinch every single penny. One thing that changed is I had my first-born. But it should not be this expensive to raise of family of 1 child. It's getting ridiculous. We've been considering emigrating elsewhere.

Canadians vote for the Left on average 60% in every federal election. Canada is NO LONGER a safe place to invest your money. In 2022, Justin Trudeau showed that a Canadian government can seize your bank account and freeze your assets, simply for holding views that the government doesn't approve of. Canadians have also showed themselves to be the world's stupidest voters, putting into office Justin Trudeau three times in a row. Trudeau has gotten his biggest support in the big urban areas, which says something about the intelligence of the big urban areas.

As someone who lives near vancouver, this is something that I am truely worried about. I don't own a home yet, but where I live, it's more like 500k a year. It really scares me. Thank you for making this video.
It gets worse. On Vancouver Island, in Parksville, which is a town ,mid island of 10,000 people , an average home is $900,000! On Average. So, if a couple has $200,000 to put down on that home -a substantial amount, their mortgage is $700,000 . IF you qualify. Interest rates have skyrocketed in the past 3 years and people simply can't afford to live.
A big house in a good neighborhood, in Calgary in the late eighties was $400,000. That same home today is $1,750,000. Depressing and completely out of reach for most people.

I've lived in Canada for sixty years and I have to say that I do not recognize the country as described here. This is still a great country, but inflation (like in the rest of the Western world) has gotten out of control. Corporate control of our politics has ruined the chances of young people to get ahead, including my own children. A housing crash will be needed to reset prices and rent controls need to be reinstated. Trudeau, whom I'm no fan of, has made things worse, but it is exactly the same in the UK and Germany. The UK has had a Conservative government since 2015. All of our political leaders are following the same playbook. We need new ideas. Without them working people will continue to struggle.

Great job on the video. Only thing I'd add is the housing that is being built is Luxury Condos, when affordable is desired.
This is a problem with the upfront costs of builds. If luxury only costs like 100k more to make in a building that's gonna be selling units for close to a mil anyway, it makes no sense to try and save that much on the build. We need to see more supply in general and a higher participation in construction before it makes any sense for condos to build lower end units. I guess the government could enforce it, but idk what that'd even look like.

Born and raised in Canada. The rising cost of living is just depressing and I’ve basically given up on starting a family because of it here in Vancouver. I know that in order to move out of my parents house, I’d have to get a full time job, eat instant noodles only, and have at least five roommates in order to continue living here. Minimum wage in BC is $16/hr changing to $17/hr but living wage is at least $26/hr last I checked. It’s so sad because I love it here but it seems just seems impossible to be hopeful .
