Borned & raised in California (OC) I’ve always felt Hawaii is where I feel like I “fit in”. Being mixed I just felt I blended in easier in Hawaii. I like how you kept reiterating that “It’s not better it’s not worse, it’s just different”. Unfortunately a lot people look at “different” as “bad”.
As a native Coloradan who spent most of my life nestled in the mountains, I traveled to the shores of Hawaii to live my best life by the beach. While the islands' beauty is undeniable, adapting to the subtle art of passive-aggression culture has been a challenge. In the Rockies, bluntness was the norm; here, it's a dance of hidden meanings.
In my hometown, neighbors were family, and social status didn't matter. Hawaii has a different story, where friendships take a bit more effort especially when working remotely and high school defines who you are here and tells a bit more of a background of how you grew up.
The toughest part hands down living in Hawaii being an outsider is isolation. When I announced my voyage to this tropical paradise, the chorus of excitement was like a symphony in my ears. I envisioned my sandy shores becoming a revolving door of Friends. However, the reality has been more muted. Over the past two years, only a handful have graced this Hawaiian paradise. Weaving the threads of friendship becomes much more of a challenge and I get why so many people go back to the mainland.
However, there is charm here that if you can overcome this place is undeniably the best place to live on earth and the Aloha spirit is real. Driving is so much easier here and the way of life is so much better on every level. And let us not forget food like Musubi. So Yummy. 😊 Anyways sorry this was longer than expected and I think I could draft a book on this now of my thoughts. So, I hope that gave some different insight on this topic.

You must live small town Hawaii brah! Oahu is where it’s at. You won’t feel lonely
Spent many years in Hawaii and also in California. In Hawaii, if the line is long or you're waiting in traffic, most people quietly wait patiently and will show some Aloha when driving, or if you come up on a line let's say at the grocery store, locals will wave you and say, "Go ahead" a reflection of compassion, kindness, and Aloha. In California, I have experienced people literally yelling at me because I unknowingly "cut" in line because I wasn't aware of where the line started or I was ordering food at a grocery store counter and the worker behind the counter asked me what I would like and the person that was waiting (I didn't know because I had just walked up) starts yelling at me because it was not my turn ( I didn't know who had ordered and who was waiting for their food). I feel people in Hawaii are very gracious, have humility and are respectful. In California, people tend to be more barbaric, have no shame and will yell at you, feel entitled and are self-centered. In Hawaii, it's all about US. In California, it's all about ME.
This was a great video. I started coming to Hawaii in 2017 and fell in love. My daughter lives in Hawaii Kai and I love that area. I am definitely looking to buy in the future. Currently I live in Maryland however I am New York born and raised and the way that you explained the northeast culture is so spot on.
I would like to have a place there to split my time as well. One of the things I love about the mainland is the changing of seasons however I love love the Hawaiian weather. I have never felt more at home than I do when I am in Hawaii.

I was born & raised in Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii … been in the Bay Area for the past 12 years for work… I own a piece of paradise on the big island of Hawaii & will be moving back in a few years to build my retirement home. You’re right, the people in California drives like maniacs.. lots of road rage incidents that leads to accidents & shootings especially on I-880 / Hwy 24 & Hwy 4 this is a daily occurrences. I go back home to Honolulu, Hawaii to visit friend & family once or twine a year.. the commute is civil, I do not experience any hostility no.matter what the driving conditions are. My husband and I were stationed in Hawaii for 5 1/2 years. We wanted to stay so bad but, he needed to be close to his family. They’re from Oregon. We ended up staying in Washington. It is beautiful but, my heart is and will always be in Hawaii. I miss it to this day. Left in 1981. I got to go back in 1999. I cried so much like I did when I left the first time. I still dream of living there. If I could I’d be there in a heartbeat.❤ Maui strong 🙏Praying for you💔

This was pretty spot on. From the South, lived and traveled allover the USA. Keep up the good work. I think these videos are informative for HI folks too, so they can see what kinda people these mainlanders are. And maybe, just maybe, we can all get along a little mo' betta.
Have lived my whole life in California and I love it. We have the most amazing scenery, culture, food, climate, you name it! So thankful to live here. However, I would love to move and experience something different but it has to be an upgrade and to me Hawaii is the only upgrade from California. Great video!

I grew up in waipahu til I was 12 then moved to Connecticut actually where the coast guard academy is....HUGE culture shock for me my first 10 years probably..been 30 now Hawaii looks like it has changed so much but I miss it dearly
As we grieve with our brothers and sisters from Lahaina, I sit here at work and wonder what can we do to help and tell you that I couldn't watch last week's video watching Mahe cry was too much it hurt you guys have become family to me .
I feel indebted to the Hawaiian people for stealing your beautiful culture every time I go back to your Islands. I come back with a little more Hawaii in my blood and my soul .

Born and raised in dc and when I went to Hawaii for my honeymoon it was a huge shock. Everyone was so nice and friendly and I was like “what is this” lol. It was such a breath of fresh air ! When I came back home it was depressing lol. Definitely wish more people had that laid back mentality here.

Born in Georgia, raised in Kailua. I went to Aikahi elementary, Kailua Int, and Kalaheo. You're spot on with the sports. Little League is big in both places. I played in Kainalu Little League, lol. Football is huge too in both places! Are the Windward Tigers any good still? That was my Pop Warner team! College football is king in the South though. War Eagle!!! Overall though, The aloha spirit is friendlier or just warmer than southern hospitality, IMO. Maybe It's just me or maybe I feel that way because culturally Hawaii raised me.
hello I am fantasizing of moving to Hawaii (Oahu) because I hate the driving situation in California... I am from SF and lived up and down California I currently live in Seal Beach which is at the most northern part of Orange Co. I also need the beach I am a surfer also... I HATE the callous rude narcissistic jerk driving it doesn't matter where in california because up and down but especially southern california plus the weirdness that happened in SoCal during Covid... however I am concerned about boredom and I like autumn leaves...and snowboarding in winter plus SF is just falling apart I think I like San Clemente but there are NO trees I guess there are pros and cons everywhere but I feel like I need a major break and would love to move to Hawaii... I lived in SD (I hated it there) I lived in Santa Cruz and Aptos (surfing along beautiful HWY 1 was so rugged and gorgeous) but it is waaaay too crowded with kooks on hundred dollar foam boards (not all of course Richard Schmidt lives there) and to be honest its scary if you overstay and its getting dark and its high tide in Santa Cruz... plus lots of weird meth heads (almost got killed in Santa Cruz mountains which is burned down now) and SF with its weirdness and overpriced rent and homes (lots of homeless people with substance abuse issues there and please if you go there please do not leave your pets in the car they get stolen and murdered) and I think I lived in Napa for a while (the drive to The Beach in SF was long and there are beaches in Sonoma but they are not as good) sorry for long comment but I would love to try living in one of the islands I think I would start in Oahu and maybe Kauai (for snowy mountains I heard in winter ?) thank you for your information
I've lived in the northeast my entire life (Maryland/Pennsylvania) and I took a family vacation to Oahu in the winter of 2020 and absolutely fell in love with Hawaii, especially the weather. It's my dream to one day enjoy that weather year round!

Born and raised in Nebraska in a small town, population was less than 10,000 and it was very isolated. If you wanted to do activities you had to travel 3-4hrs. I will say the community was very united especially when it came to sports.
You are so spot on with almost everything you said. Your travels have given you a perspective that few can really have. You can explain it, but the experience really brings it all together. I’m from Boston and lived in LA for 12 years and I always tell people on east coast how suuuuuper chill driving is California (I lived in Bay too but only for 6 months). Calm driving in SoCal!

The OBVIOUS 800lb gorilla in this conversation is that Hawaii is fundamentally rooted in Asian culture…the food, the mannerisms, the personality, etc. reflect an Asian vibe that has developed over the past century.
In a way, California and Hawaii are mirror images of one another but reflect different dominant sides: California is where many Asian cultures embed themselves within the dominant “White” society, whereas Hawaii is one where Whites embed themselves within the dominant Asian society.
An Asian will never fully feel “American” in California/Mainland, whereas a White/Haole will never fully feel “Hawaiian” in Hawaii…
As someone who has lived in Japan, on Oahu, and in Orange County, I think this notion of how the cultures "embed" might hit the nail on the head...

From my sense of things, the biggest difference, for me and my family, between Hawaii and the mainland is the position of Asian Americans. There are insulated geographical and professional "islands" in the mainland where Asians are the majority and, if they stay within those pockets, they do not see the prejudice at large. I feel that the goodwill that Asian Americans have built over the years as a "model minority" (for better or for worse), has disintegrated. The mainland, as a whole, just seems to be getting more hostile between the races, and the races with a little power over the others are wielding it without grace.
Hawaiians would probably see this as something pretty foreign. I am counting on it, actually. All along the West Coast, there are crimes committed against Asians. Often, it's not pure hate that is driving the crime. It's because criminals see opportunity. They see old Asian aunties and they will steal their purses. If they see a popular Asian business, they will break into the business to look for a safe with cash. They will burglarize Asian homes, because they know they might find some gold jewelry and will not likely meet a homeowner who fights back. There is also a fair amount of untreated mental illness on the streets that is driving some of the crime against elderly Asians and Asian women.
This difference is one of the reasons I am seriously considering a move to a red state or to Hawaii. The liberal policies of mostly-Democrat led governments are only making things worse, and I would consider myself a Democrat. Also, crime is cultural and generational, and it replicates in greater number every year in California. I do not want to be locked in my home holding a firearm, when I retire.
I know this video was recorded and banked before the fires. My prayers to all the families in Hawaii as they search for family members, as they grieve, and as they rebuild.

Derek, what about showing some more listings on your video? You have ton of very informative info., but it would be nice to see a house tour, from an affordable ones to few millions dollar homes. I know you have few videos that you and your team do that but those are very few, I would love to see you walk through the house and give your point of view of the house. The few you have, you and/or Mahe do a great job, and I believe there are segment of the RUclips population that enjoy getting a tour of home, from affordable to luxury. I am guessing that may motivate people who might be interested in purchasing to potentially seek you out since they are going to need a buyer representation of all the listings, and I would think number of these listing agents would love to get a good publicity out of it as well so they may be willing to cooperate. Just a thought, otherwise, thank you very much for so many informative videos!
From the Oregon coast to the coast of Hawaii. That is my ideal split. Far enough from the big city of Portland, out in the little coast town of 1000 people, then over to the big island when the weather says it’s time to leave Oregon.
Pretty Good video and some solid points. Keep up the hard work. Only correction. Around 8:20 you reference virginia as part of the Northeast section. Definitely not the case. Not even northern Virginia is considered part of the Northeast
I find it rediculus that high schools think over loafing kids with homework is prep for college. Other than calculus and physics I never worked as hard in college as high school.
Colorado is not a pretty place right now, there's a lot of problems.

My life goal is to live in the state of Hawaii, either Kauai or Maui. I just don't really know how to go about doing it.
Figure out how to make at least 200k a year first to even live comfortably😂 guys out here making $40-50 hourly (such as my dad) and cant even afford to buy a home
