I so appreciate the oft overlooked point that humans are animals too!❤ I've been put off when I see people innocently asking questions about starting the vegan journey and being eviscerated by other vegans. Compassionate responses are the way to go, imo. This includes comparison for ourselves too, which could include respectfully disengaging. Thank you, thank you!☮️💜

I went WFPB in 2003, so I'm no longer a beginner. However, I still love seeing what other people are doing and joining in. Great suggestions in this video. I wish you had been around when I took the plunge. Doctors Fuhrman and Greger are a wealth of information.
For anyone who is new to WFPB, please don't worry about your nutrition or health. After nearly 20 years, I still think it's one of the best decisions I ever made. I feel better at 61 than I did at 42 when I started.

I became whole food plant based 13 years ago to assist my aunt stem her new diagnosis of breast cancer and multiple myeloma. It worked so well for my aunt and myself. I lost weight, my fibromyalgia, irritable bowels, heartburn, and constipation resolved. I had no post exercise soreness, stinky stools or breath or armpits 😂, my blood sugar stays in low pre diabetes ,😅blood pressure and cholesterol. In the beginning I was too aggressive with fiber which caused diarrhea. Go slowly. I drink sei mei green tea and hojicha tea. I take a dish to friends’ houses. Find Whole Foods hot meals or salad bar although expensive.

My why for veganuary. I was recently diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. My cholesterol and triglycerides are sky high. I was taking pills to eat meat, which I never liked or wanted to eat anyway, it just was something I did for my family because my daughter has celic disease and already had a limited diet. Anyway, when the results of my physical came back, and my doctor wanted to put me on all these drugs, well, It suddenly occured to me if I don't put me first, there might not BE a me. Bonus is that I also get to put the planet and animals first too. I have wanted to do this for a long time.

A really straight forward and to the point video. I started plants only last summer after finding your channel. I feel good but haven't lost any weight as I am trying to cook recipes that will appeal to my omnivore husband. Unfortunately most of those include cashews and more pasta than I've eaten in my life. They're all delicious! I'm being kind to myself and the planet and will never go back. Thanks, Jeremy!

    • @pbwithjeremy

I watch many vegan and WFPB RUclips channels that I love including PB and J. Have you ever heard of Derek Sarno? He and his brother Chad are both vegan and WFPB chefs. He makes food to entice omnivores with easy to find ingredients. I haven't personally tried any of his recipes but they look absolutely delicious and they'll hopefully give you more ideas.

Thank you, Jeremy for another great video. I have been a vegetarian from the time I was 18. I am now 63. I initially became a vegetarian because my college roommates were vegetarian. However, I remained morbidly obese and uncomfortable in my body. I tried dieting dozens of times... Fed up, in Oct 2018 I took a nutrition class based on the CHIP program. The nutritionist/instructor introduced us to How Not to Die by Dr Michael Greger, which we read/followed together for 12 weeks. Besides introducing us to the wfpb sos free lifestyle, our first class assignments was to watch the video, Forks Over Knives. My husband walked in the room while I was watching and it caught his eye. He actually remained in the room. By the end of the video, he decided we both should take this journey together. We never looked back... It has been life changing. Truly delicious way of eating! And yes, at times I have gained weight... But I have learned weight gain is an indication I need to focus on eating nonstarchy vegetables and reduce the amount of starches, nuts/seeds/avocados unless I want to exercise more.

    • @scienceislove2014

Thank you for your video as always Jeremy! I went “vegan” in January of 2021 after watching Forks over Knives. I actually started knowing it’s the healthiest way to eat for longevity but over the last few years I have also found myself doing it for the animals and the planet 🌎. My husband was very supportive and went along with me (for the most part) but getting our kids on board has been the hardest part. They were 9, 11 and 16 at the time I started. Basically, junk food snacks and dairy have been so hard to get rid of in order to try and keep them sort of happy with the transition. All that said, it’s a new year and the hubby and I are switching from vegan to WFPB, cutting out the junk and cleaning up our environment because as Chef AJ says “if it’s in your house it’s in your mouth”! I'm on my fourth year plant based. I was dying when I moved to live with my son and his family in Illinois. I'd had cancer twice, five heart attacks complicated by damage to my heart from chemo, had mobility issues from 30 years of MS, was hypertensive and diabetic (T2), and my doctor said they were out of options. After 3 full years, I'm 40 lbs lighter, and my diabetes is in remission. I still have issues, but plants gave me back the chance to spend some more time with my grandkids and great grandkid, as well as my kids and my friends.

Let’s see, I was vegetarian for 42 years and after that vegan for 10 years. Originally it was for the animals. It still is for the animals, but it is now also for my health and peace of mind. (I feel ethically good about what I’m eating.) I have gone back-and-forth between vegan and WFPB no oil. I fall into the overweight vegan category, which makes me unhappy. Most people don't understand what veganism and vegetarism is all about, some people think that you can't be healthy on a diet with out meat and dairy people think that you need dairy for strong bones and teeth, but the truth is that you need calcium for strong bones and teeth and you can get calcium from plants 🪴 😊👍

Regarding that pantry purge--when I committed to being vegan, I gradually used up all the animal products as adjuncts to the vegan meals I was making. At one point, the last piece of cheese and the last slice of bacon was used up. We no longer had any animal products in the house. But because he'd been weaned so stealthily and gradually,, it was another month before he realized he was vegan (it was the pandemic, so he was eating every meal here). I asked him if he wanted to continue, and he said yes. So there's more than one way to purge that pantry

I found that my gut just couldn't make a drastic switch. Transitioning slowly helped my gut make the switch a bit easier. I already ate a good portion of my diet as fruit and vegetables so I first just cut out dairy. Once I starved out those microbes, I started replacing meat with beans. Finally, I started transitioning from white carbs to whole grain.

Hi Eilís (eye-Lish) here in Connemara, Co Galway (Ireland) . I tried going plant based before but just slowly slipped back into my old ways of eating. I think I tried too hard to fast to begin with and was struggling with such a change. I will try to go a bit slower this time , I think a gradual transition for me will just suit me better. Although I have to say unknown to myself I did pretty good today . Avocado toast for brekkie, mushroom soup for lunch , hummus n crackers, veggie Burritto for dinner ,😊 . So 1st day almost over and I'm pretty happy with today . I made a list today of what I like to eat and I am going to find better plant based recipes for those meals. 😊

Going WFPB did the following: I lost more weight than I'll admit to. I was able to stop taking insulin (T2D) and Trulicity and cut the Metformin dose in half while lowering a1c from over 8 to around 5. I cut my thyroid dosage in half. Every single blood marker has improved, a1c, cholesterol, inflammation markers, all of it. By incorporating high anti-inflammation foods I was able to stay on the minimum dose of methotrexate for my RA. I was completely pain free (I used to need a walker at times). I was exercising and gardening. Moved 2500 pounds of river rock 200 feet by myself in a day. That sort of thing.
Due to stuff I went off the wagon and I'm kind of feeling cr@ppy. I can't wait to get back on.
Make sure you're getting Vitamin B12-it is absolutely crucial. I will plug Dr. Greger's channel, it was instrumental for me. www.youtube.com/@NutritionFactsOrg

I chose to do it because I just feel better. Also, trying to get off blood pressure medicine. But when I look at the condition of our SAD and how animals are actually treated when processing, I got rather disgusted. So, here I am. Plant Based Vegan, no oil and no sugar. Oooh…why is veganuary important to me?
I’m trying to get back to my veggie ways, and this time plant based.
I became lacto veg in 1980, and about 10 years ago reverted to occasional omnivore, and I don’t want that in my life.
I’m using it as a daily habit reinforcement to go along with daily exercise, including my lonely hula hoop!
I’m also cooking more lunches, because that is where I’ll opt for convenience.
Hello, and thanks for what you do from Colorado.

Thanks Jeremy for this video. I needed a boost. I have been struggling on weight and diabetes for a number of years and then had kidney failure. Diet has been confusing to say the least. My urologist says Plant based but still wants me to eat meat. Six oz. per day limited to chicken breast, turkey breast, and fish. Doing ok with that part. Some days I only do two or three oz. and that is getting more often. Part of my struggle is the fact that I am allergic to nightshades. I really appreciate you and your family for all of the pep talks. Please keep them coming.

Im trying to capitalize on this before the impact fades. Vegetarianism is so natural for me. Veganism has a MUCH STEEPER learning curve right off the bat. Rather than starting to "eat like a vegan", 100 or nothing, I'm trying to try to cut stuff out a little at a time while introducing new foods into the diet! Fingers crossed!

I got covid then while sick I did research. WFPB kept coming up. I’m a decent home cook so I knew I could do this. I ate that way for breakfast and lunch then reg SAD diet for dinner. My cholesterol became perfect in 6 months then since I loved eating WFPB I began eating vegan full time💃 RUclips was my biggest source for ideas and inspiration. For me, it was a throw-away comment by my cardiologist. I was emphatically told to stop using calcium supplements, and, sure enough, I had just been diagnosed with osteopenia. I asked him about that and where I was to get that calcium because one could only drink so much milk. All he said was that broccoli has a lot of calcium (WTF???). I already knew that, but my understanding of the whole shebang was quite old (vegetable sources of nutrients were not easily absorbed). So...research. The big challenge was sifting through all that blasted noise surrounding nutrition. Plant Chompers helped with that. I found others that helped sift through and judge the efficacy of studies. All this led me to veganism and a new framework for nutrition. I actually did not run across you until after I had lost a lot weight to the point where I was getting scarily low (lower than 20 BMI). More research...
The benefits for me go far beyond weight loss, although that is certainly linked to the whole problem of "premature ventricular contractions (PVP)" in my heart (seriously scary bad) and a history of Diabetes 2. It also included losing the ability to walk without pain and age-related muscle atrophy (I am staring at 71), and a woman which complicates that last issue. Besides losing all that weight, I am now back to my old hiking gait, usually walk about 7,000 to 10,000 steps a day, regaining muscle strength, no more PVP, my mind is clearer and sharper, and generally feel as if I shed 20 years of aging along with that scary amount of weight. Will I ever leave behind WFPB? Hell no. I am here to stay.
For those of you out there that are struggling with this AND feeding a family, I feel for you. My life is easier in that I am the only one I have to feed, and I can be as weird as I want. Hot sauce in my morning oat/fruit/cauliflower bowl? Yes! On the other hand, my sons are grown and gone and I miss them as well as having a family around to rely on. Thank goodness for the internet.
Like you have stated about yourself. Nutrition was my first and primary motivation. Learning about how all the environmental considerations, is icing on that cake. Animal activism comes in as the last component and my reasons are complicated. I am also deeply angry at how we've all been so horribly manipulated and damaged by corporate food industry for my whole life.

Grandson came to live with grandma and just needs his Bologna sandwiches so I always keeps some mock tuna for me. That’s what happened. I told him up front it was a veggie home, I guess I should have stood firm. I can’t loose weight. I yoyo around 230. That’s not good for a 5’4” granny of 70. A lovely grandma! There's lots of mockmeats out there that might satisfy him - if not he'll get used to it :)
Fat is HARD to lose, especially as we age - and while diet can play a major role, what's really important is that you build muscle in any way you can. I would look for some videos about building muscles for seniors and do what you're able to. Muscle helps burn fat, so the more you have the more fat you'll lose. Focus on that!

Wraps with the same sort of selections with a selection of sauces. Soups and nice creams. For snacks we could have pita or wrap chips (seasoned and plain) and dips. Breakfast or snack could be overnight oats with fruit, fruit bowls with cashew cream or a lovely flavor of creamy silken tofu cream. Then there’s the whole pasta genre to explore. I went hfpb-macrobiotic in the early 80s. Read the McDougall Plan, and eventually found myself back on dairy, sick again, and having gained a lot of weight. Mom died from colon cancer, and I knew that I had to eat a high fiber diet and eliminate dairy. It wasn't easy, as you all know, but today, I am about 100 lbs less than my highest weight, and as ling as I stay 100% hfpb-starchavore-no oil, avoid salt and refined sugar, I am ok. As soon as I have some salt, I am bloated, and ny joints hurt, and get deformed. It's not worth it. Plus, I love the food. Thank you , Dr. McDougall.

Hi, Aaron from Durham, UK here. I wish I could say that I’ve come to veganuary because of the animals, but what has finally gave me the kick up the ar*e is my health. I need to get my blood pressure and weight under control because I’ve discovered a big family history of heart issues and diabetes so I want to get ahead of it. Also I’m training to be a nurse so I feel like I should set an example of living more healthily. I’ve got another 40+ years on this planet, so I had better look after myself and the world around me - so veganism just makes sense.
    Other things are;
    1) I love cooking, so this will open a whole new world of recipes to me.
    2) I love animals, so this is me stop being a hypocrite and actually acting on my empathy.
    3) I genuinely love the taste of fruit and vegetables anyway, so why not embrace the flavour.
    4) I just feel lighter and more energised when I’m eating well.
    5) I’m interested in how mindfulness, wellness, spirituality, ethical living, etc all links together so I can look after my mind, body, and spirit.
So, I’m going to make a concerted effort to stick it out, and enjoy embracing a more healthful and guilt-free lifestyle ☺️

My Why... I was told by my doctor that I will need to reduce my cholesterol or go on medication. I have eaten "clean" my whole life. I have been dairy free for 20 years, so the only thing contributing to cholesterol other than my body, is meat. I am not overweight, could stand to lose 15 pounds, but I am at a normal weight range. So I chose to go WFPB for my health!

Hello from Texas! I have completely reversed diabetes in the past going vegan. I fell off the wagon for a while but I’m back into veganism 100%!! I went cold turkey. I feel so much better, and have more energy. I am aware that it will take 3 months to see a difference in my A1C but I know I will. I got blood work back and cholesterol was up, triglycerides sky high. Going vegan, Im hoping to lower both!! Thank you so much for this video!!

Hi Jeremy! I live in the Treasure Valley, in beautiful Idaho. I didn't know that I had Metabolic Syndrome until I was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis in 2020. I stopped drinking alcohol and changed my diet and I try very hard to avoid products that come in a bag, box or a can. I choose minimally processed foods with the fewest ingredients.
My doctor put me on a WFPB diet last year and I have done pretty good except for cheese. I'm working on it though!
I like Mexican food a lot, so I found it real easy to cook it vegan style. As a matter of fact, when I search for a recipe, I always add the word vegan or vegetarian.

Be careful of store bought vegan cheese. Its the ultimate vegan processed food. Check the fat content. The kinds I have seen sold commercially are like 30% saturated fat, which is probably almost as bad as regular cheese. I find avacado or guacamole to be a good substitute on my mexican food. At least then, you are increasing the HDL instead of the LDL. In general, I find using traditional stuff that's intended to be vegan to produce better results. There is a guy on here I love, with a channel - I think it's called Spain on a fork, who makes all these traditional vegan recipes. He has some fish stuff too, but the vegan stuff is in a separate playlist.

Perfect! I started veganuary cooking from the current issue of forks over knives magazine, was eating substantially more than I was used to, I actually felt gluttonous tbh. Days 3-5 I felt terrible! And my stomach was so loud and wouldn’t shut up! I typed in the recipes into cronometer and quickly realized I was substantially under eating! Only 1000 cals per day on average even though I was eating a lot of volume. I’ve adjusted my meals and recipes so now I’m doing fine but man it was a little frustrating. Idk why they don’t give calorie information on their recipes, I could have avoided all that lol thanks for the video and the tips!

    • @pbwithjeremy
      @pbwithjeremy  5 месяцев назад +1

I think they avoid the calories because they want people to eat intuitively and until they're full rather than following math. Do you find you've got lots of energy now?
