After I’ve watched a bunch of RUclips I get super worried that I will break a hip and die from muscle wasting because I don’t eat enough animal protein. Then I just try to remind myself that all of my family members that have passed in the last 30 years died of heart disease and cancer.
Exactly!
The pesticide in our veggies is for sure giving us cancer
Excellent point!
How Not to Age is a fascinating book...but is a bit nerdy! Thanks for breaking down that part, and I look forward to seeing more!
I would love to see more videos on the book, How not to Age. Thanks you for sharing this information with us.
Yes! I was influenced by family and "all the data" aka RUclipsrs that I was not eating enough protein, that carbs were killing me. After 4 years Vegetarian(98% vegan) I tried keto like eating with my husband. I gained all my weight back and felt terrible. Back on this way of eating now and feel so much better. I just tell them that doesn't work for me or that I have food sensitivities.
In fact, in my life I have been told many times that it is not necessary to be concerned about getting enough protein, that no matter what you do you will get enough. I have asked a great many of these people how much protein they are consuming. Not one of them had even tracked their intake for a single day, because they had been told it is not necessary. I recall one woman whose beautiful long hair fell out after going vegan that she was sure she was getting enough protein because she read it somewhere. In fact the same thing happened to me on an extended weight loss diet some years back where I lost 90 pounds in a year.
Most Americans are not obsessed with protein. They eat a diet that is mostly ultraprocessed foods. They get a high percentage of their calories from processed seed oils in the salty/sugary/greasy snacks they much on constantly. They get less than 50% of the requirements. They have given up on the idea that a normal person without an advanced degree can figure out how to eat within the guidelines.
Recently, i've had to stop watching some of my favorite RUclips plant based cooks because they have gone from the Starch Solution type eating plan, to a high protein type plan. After commenting about it a few times, I just decided to move on. No point in following someone who doesn't get it.
Hi there, Marianne from Michigan here! Loved this video... I am a geek when it comes to learning more about this subject matter. I currently have How Not to Age on my nightstand and you have given me the motivation to start reading tonight! Thank you for all you do ❤
You are so welcome Marianne! Hope you enjoy it.
I read "How not to Die" years ago. Thanks for letting us know about his new book! Already requested it at my library.
I’d love to hear more of Dr. Greger! Thanks for all you share. I love your family!
Elaine from Boston, MA
Thank you Elaine!!!
This was my favorite video of yours yet! Good job breaking everything down in easily digestible (yes pun) information. I’m still working my way through that book and love it. So far, I’ve added wheat germ to my daily smoothie. Would be great to learn more of your insights on the book.
My pleasure - and more is on the way!
After switching to a whole food, plant based, no oil diet a couple of months ago (recommended by my primary care physician), I have lost 21 lbs. and feel so much better. In a couple of weeks I will go for bloodwork and see my PCP again, and I am hoping that my blood pressure and cholesterol levels have improved. I found your channel recently, and I appreciate your information and your friendly, positive approach to the research-backed guidance that you share in your videos, and YES, please share more information from How Not to Age by Dr. Michale Greger! Like you, I have seen so many videos about how we need so much protein, and I was worried that I wasn't getting enough. Thank you for putting my mind at ease! I enjoyed watching this video, and I can't wait to see more of what you share from Dr. Greger's book. Have a great day! Kim from Seguin, Texas
Thanks Kim - that's excellent that your physician is recommending plant-based! And glad you're enjoying the content!!!
We only need .36 per lb! I read same book plus Valter Longos work on longevity! All the protein hikes IGF-1 and increasing aging of the body! I cut mine after years of working to hard for it!
This was a great video. I have often thought we eat way more protein than needed and had wondered the consequences. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
I'm trying to learn more about protein combining in this way of eating and would love more on that, with examples. Thank you for all you do!
Hello from Montana - Big Sky Country. Great information in this video. I would love any video that you create from the How Not To Age book. The information you provided today will help me when I have conversations with the carnivores in my life. (That and wearing the T-shirt saying “ I get my protein from PLANTS. Where do you get your FIBER!”
So glad this is helpful to you - and YES - rock that shirt ;)
Thank you Jeremy for yet another very informative video. I would love more videos like this. Love all your research to help us live a healthier life. Pauline from Western Australia
I would LOVE to see you do an interview/discussion on this topic with Christopher Gardner! Sue in Tucson (First UNESCO Gastronomic Heritage Site and home to do many amazing vegan restaurants!)
My pleasure Pauline!
Appreciate this video/info and would like more. It’s good news because I love rice and beans and I don’t love meat in general.
Absolutely loved this video! Knowledge is power!
PBNEWBIE here. Watching from St. Catharines, ON. Retired World Natural Professional Bodybuilder. Watched 3 times in order to absorb it all. Sounds like I was doing the right amount of protein 20 years ago. Yah! However, these days I have totally changed the types of proteins I eat. Plus the physique and workouts are not the same from 20 years ago. The PB diet is outstanding. All the health benefits I am getting out of it has been goal ONE. Thank you Jeremy, for all the info you get so excited about and sharing it with us on the inter WEB. You are so adorable and make me smile watching. Love you! HUGS
Thank you Sammy - wow - you've lived an interesting life so far! So inspiring to hear that you shifted focus to PB as well. So glad this was helpful to you!!!
Yes! Please make more videos about Dr. Greger's work.
What an excellent video! It was chock full of useful information to educate us on dietary protein. The info from How Not To Age is fascinating! Gotta love Dr. Greger! Thanks for this.
As always, great info, Jeremy! I'm definitely going to check out "How Not to Age" and more videos on this book would be great.
Would appreciate more videos about the book! I own it but it's so much info that I forget most of it. Love hearing more focussed interpretations.
More to come!
Thank you for this informative video. Fascinating stuff. I'm always wondering if my macros are in line with what I need. It's really frustrating trying to figure it all out because i hate counting things like protein grams, etc.
This was so interesting. My husband wanted to listen, he’s usually not interested, and this prompted a meaningful discussion about our health and steps forward. THANK YOU!
Oh wow!!!! It's comments like this that drive me to make these videos so thank YOU for sharing this. I'd love to know more about what you discussed if you'd like to share - either here or e-mail me at: pbwithjeremy@gmail.com - thank you!!!
Yes more info like you just mentioned. Thanks from Nebraska
Excellent video. It seems like more PB influences are pushing more protein these days. It is so confusing. Love the nerdy science!
I would love more videos like this. Great information, thank you. Debbie, Auckland, New Zealand 😊
Nice one,Jeremy 👍
I have all Dr G’s books on Audible and have listened to this one at least four times through - a complete treasure-trove of science and sense.
Thank you for sharing - this and everything else 👏👍👏❤️👍
Another awesome video Jeremy discussion of an important subject What is Protein and if we're consuming too much especially if it is animal based protein. Thanks 👍 for sharing this information and love 🥰 it. Love ❤ Jeremy & Family.
Hi there, new subscriber here from Vancouver Island, BC. I really enjoyed your video, especially the "nerdy" science explanations. 😆Very informative and breaks down the science that Dr. Greger presents into bite sized, plain language morsels most people will be able to understand. I'm glad I subscribed, and I am grateful for the links to the scientific studies you provided. I like to read scientific abstracts to obtain evidence based knowledge to support my vegan, nutritarian lifestyle. Very rare to find evidence based channels on RUclips, so thank you for what you're doing to help educate us all, in such a humorous and down-to-earth way!
My pleasure and thank you for joining our community here!
I absolutely loved this! I've shared this video within the WordPress community, so when people want to know more about protein, they'll see this amazing video! Thanks for making this video ❤ //Annamaria from Sweden (and it's not just Anna 😉)
Thank you for sharing this AnnaMaria!
Hello from Lindstrom, Minnesota in the U.S. Yes! More videos like this, please.
Great info! Would love to see more.
More to come!
Great video! You helped me understand protein in a way I haven't before despite being a total nutrition nerd! "Nerd!" made me lol, btw. I love Dr Greger's books, but I've only read his first two. Can't wait to read HNTA. Those studies are fascinating. Lots of people pushing protein these days and they supposedly see results with weight loss & muscle building & retaining. Those studies are definitely food for thought and I had no idea about the newly discovered hormone!
Anyway, love this, and definitely do more like this! Thanks!
My pleasure!!!
More videos about longevity would be great! And would you like to do a full day of eating, where you get the recommended amount of protein? Just as an example..?
Hi from Judith in Sacramento CA! Fascinating video. I too have been put off by all the videos touting a high-protein diet, so it's really helpful to hear why too much protein is so problematic.
Hi Judith!
Hi! Thanks for tge shout out😍. I bought that book and have really enjoyed the nerdy reading, looking forward to the part about this hormone. That protein amount is totally do-able, what a relief. I had heard the ridiculous 100-110 g/ day for me at 56 kilos. I guess that’s the US double quantity obsession! Hospitals aren’t full of protein deficient people, either… rather the heart disease and cancer group. Sad really. My kidneys thank you for putting this out there! ❤
My pleasure - and yes - I love how people focus on a problem we don't have and ignore the ones we do...
thank you. Your videos are wonderful.....Great personality that makes learning fun.
Wow, thank you Karla!
GREAT VIDEO!!! YES, PLEASE, MORE VIDEOS FROM THAT BOOK!!!
Hey there😊Christine here from Washington state. I have been confused about how much protein to eat, especially lately. Thanks for the video, it has helped me figure out what I need to do. ❤
You are so welcome!
Thanks for another great video. I would love more using the science from Dr. Gregors book. I have it but I'm tired by the time I get to read every night and it's a bit too much science
Yes - it can be a lot to digest
Hello from Massachusetts! Love your videos!
Glad you like them Susan!
Definitely interested! I borrowed how not to age a long time ago but I cant remember the major points. A video like this will help. Thx!!
Glad it was helpful! Though the book is fairly new - so maybe you're thinking of one of his other books?
Yes I’m sorry! I was thinking about his book How Not To Die. More reason that I need a few videos on this one lol. I didn’t even realize it existed lol
Great content
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 more like these!!!
Super interested in longevity videos - from New England 👋
I love how not to age (Katinka from the Netherlands). Yes, I guess the protein point is the main take away for people like me who are already reasonably educated about the WFPB life style. As for the book: the last few chapters were the hardest for me to get my head around. I really missed a good summary.
someone with a PhD or masters, and accredited in nutrition is qualified to give advice on protein. Your protein needs depend on who you are, how old you are, how sick you are, your exercise demands, and other metabolic/medical issues. Older people short change themselves on protein not realising it's the basis of your immune system and function. It's not 'meat protein' that is damaging - always it's addictions, pollutants, metabolic disease and so on. There are very healthy omnivores out there, many live to over 100. the common medical advice is to get 10 percent of calories from protein but actually it should be more like one third of your calories in protein
Yes, prof Bart Kay is good as nutrition is his thing, he really breaks the information from studies down. I'm no longer a vege. I was a vege bodybuilder and started eating meat, my body fat dropped very noticeably and my muscle was more full. I just feel better, I'm not thinking about my next meal all the time.
The advice I’m giving comes from someone with a PhD and all the science backed information to this video is in the link below.
Dr. Greger has the medical background to evaluate the research. Not only that, but he has a team of qualified people going through the research for and with him. See also Miche, PhD (a scientist here on RUclips) who posted on how even the elderly don’t need extra protein above what the rest of us need, and Dr. Garth Davis who wrote a fabulous book, Proteinaholic, which finds as well that we (Americans and other “wealthy” nations) are getting too much protein (and should rather concern ourselves with getting more fiber).
@@heidikamrath1951 There has to be something in the healing properties of meat. There are people with MS going full carnivore and coming out of wheelchairs, this after following the diet of specialist which I believe is plant based. Carnivore is healing the myelin sheath of mitochondria, this we can't ignore as damage to the mitochondria is the start of disease. People who have had heart problems all their lives, their hearts have healed on full carnivore diet. I'm not here to be antagonistic, I want everyone to be healthy.
Can you find the scientific data to support the connection to the carnivore diet? If it’s not done in a controlled study then it’s hard to know if it’s actually the carnivore diet. We’ve seen the same results you’re talking about here in plant-based successes. And given those aren’t companies with thr saturated fat and cholesterol of animal products it’s pretty obviously which of the paths is better for your body long term.
Greetings from Cape Cod! Thank you for this video. I keep hearing that i should be increasing my protein as i age in order to build muscle. How much though??
If you are building muscle then you should increase it a bit. To increase muscle mass in combination with physical activity, it is recommended that a person that lifts weights regularly or is training for a running or cycling event eat a range of 1.2-1.7 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, or 0.5 to 0.8 grams per pound of body weight.
If you research how the RDA for protein was established, you realize the the 65-70 grams of protein per day was augmented over the research findings by a generous amount, meaning only the physically largest people need the RDA and most people don't need that much. Athletes would maybe be an exception if they are trying to gain muscle.
ZOE channel on RUclips has a great video interview with Chris Gardner on the original study and calculation of 0.8g/kg. I show it to everyone lol. I especially liked the revelation that to put on 10kg of muscle in a year (a lofty goal!) one only needs an extra 10g or so per day. And people are out here shooting for like 80g more than they need every day as if they can eat their way into a ripped physique.
Hello from Belleville, Kansas!
Hi Darsha!
You rock ❤
Hi from DE

Hi Catherine!

Yes, tell us about the bio-hacking
why isn't there a live chat?
Probably because this is a scripted episode. He had a story to tell. No room for interaction.

Sorry , I'm so not agreeing with what you are saying. A diet higher in protein would have help so many people survive Covid, so sad to see so many people die from fear , poor nutrition and malicious medical care. I see people every day with very low albumin levels which comes from poor nutrition and you wander how is that possible in America. Simple, because many people are eating crap, foods with no nutritional value.
A diet higher in protein if they're protein deficient maybe - but higher in protein than what your body actually needs doesn't save you from Covid. If they'd eaten more food with healthy fibre and fats then likely. There's very very few people who have a problem with getting enough protein.
