@@johndavies5582 of course, no doubt. It's just that we remember the earlier things right? Had this come out earlier, then we would have referenced this for Joffrey
@@BMWclubb actually I think you were closer to being right with your first comment. Joffrey always felt like a compelling character. From this scene, Edmund doesn't feel like a character - he feels like he's just the embodiment of a trait (arrogance) designed so that he can get his comeuppance in this scene. There is nothing to this scene. He fights his soldiers, says "I am ready" and then another guy turns up and shows him he isn't (while at the same time explaining what he's doing like the viewer is 12 years old). It's a trope, very bland storytelling, like an Aesop's fable.
This exact scene already exists in the film Gladiator (and possibly in GoT as well with Joffrey at some point) except in Gladiator the scene is used subtly to embellish Commodus's character, rather than having some guy force it down the audience's throat. In Gladiator the "fighting his own men" aspect is just a small part of a wider and more complex scene going on, rather than the whole reason for the scene existing - like in Gladiator the scene shows Maximus walking away from his tired men after the battle to where Commodus is off by his own fighting four static men who aren't trying to attack him. And the viewer is trusted to work out the point being made without having it shoved down their throat. Plus rather than getting an immediate and obvious payoff with the arrogant guy being beaten there and then, they instead get the payoff at the end of the movie when Commodus enters an actual fight. The whole thing is both subtler and more believable, spun out much more effectively across the story rather than being wrapped in a neat little box.
I will confess I haven't watched whatever season of Vikings this episode is from. Maybe there is more complexity to it than this scene shows. But to me this scene feels too tidy, like it ticks a box on a "how to manufacture tension in a TV show" checklist, and as a result doesn't feel like an occurrence in a living breathing story like GoT or Gladiator. It's too obvious, and lacks reality for it.
@@BMWclubb in the books Joffrey is different from the series, it's quite similar to this one here in the video
@ParisianWeetabix well, actually, in the show, it gives us the chance to see that the other guy is more than just a sneaky mouthpiece. Not much more, as I recall....but a bit.
