    One correction, at 0:42 I mention the trowel, the DITRA trowel should be used to bond DITRA to substrates and not a 1/8" square-notched trowel. Subscribe for more bathroom remodeling tips!

    Very well presented. Not 101 version but for someone who knows just a bit more than "greenhorn".

    When doing a full bathroom tile, do you HAVE to waterproof the walls outside the shower with Kerdi as well or just where the shower is?

    I have a 2nd floor bathroom we're re-doing and removed the old tile. The tile mortar was placed right on top of the plywood subfloor. We never had a leak from this bathroom down onto the ceiling right below (the room right below this particular bathroom was the kitchen).
    This place was built in 1980 and never leaked, despite the (seemingly) complete lack of attempt to waterproof it. In 1980 they laid the bathroom's plywood subfloor, put down mortar, put down tile, then caulked around the perimeter, then installed the baseboards, then caulked the baseboards.
    When do you decide to use the waterproofing membrane? Are there special conditions or motivations? And thank you for the extremely efficient video - the pacing was perfect, just superb. I wish all YT videos were this way.

      thank you and that was smart of them to add silicone around the perimeter. Some times you get lucky and other times not with those situations. I’d opt to do the waterproofing most if the time because it doesn’t take that much longer and will last a long time.

    Once again, an awesome video! I don’t know about you guys, but I LOVE the versatility of Schluter All-Set, that changed the game and took the confusion of when & where to use modified or unmodified out of the equation. Seriously great stuff!

      @HomeRepairTutor  2 года назад +1

      Thank you and yes, ALL-SET simplifies the mortar selection; plus the directions are very helpful because of the clarification around membranes and tile 👍🏼🔥🔥

      @@HomeRepairTutor YES!! On my second bathroom remodel, you gave me your email address and I sent you pics of my little Schluter custom shower with a bench & niches a couple years back! Well, now I’m back at it doing the second bathroom, kinda forced into it as the old grout failed (as did the old green board behind them 😡) and the shower leaked into the ceiling of the dining room below 😩 Which kinda worked out fine because the hole that I opened in the ceiling where the leak came through was exactly underneath the access to the tub drain!! Easy peasy disconnecting the plumbing to the old tub and connecting the drain to the new tub! (Trying to find my silver linings here🤣). I did know both bathrooms really needed a major overhaul, and after uncovering the garbage and outdated materials in the first bathroom a couple of years ago, I should have felt more of an urgency about redoing the second. But I was trying to buy time I guess, my own fault.
      Anyway, this one has a tub this time. A little bit less complicated 😂 I’m using Kerdi and Ditra once again. These materials are so just pleasant to work with. I used Durock on the ceiling because I’m putting in lights above, but that is so HEAVY 😂 I can’t imagine having to use that on all the walls with it too!! Schluter has really spoiled me 😂

      @@HomeRepairTutor Thanks so much! Videos like yours have been priceless to me! I can’t even put into words how grateful I am to pros like yourself so willing to share your expertise. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and really don’t like depending on others to do things when get a vision in my head and I know how capable I am. Besides today’s remodeling labor costs are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! A friend just paid $15,000 for a small bathroom remodel and didn’t even change out the vanity. But what I really HATE the garbage DIY stuff the previous owners did. Like if you’re doing to do something, do it right!!! Undoing some of their garbage work is far more infuriating than having to update old outdated building standard materials. We have a handyman we’ve used for years, he was the maintenance man at the condo complex we used to live in and we’ve used him in this home for 14yrs. He does side work at night and on weekends and over the years as homeowners he has saved our asses more times than I can count! And now with this, he’s been helping at certain steps that I can’t do myself, like removing an old tub. I’m a tiny woman, that would have been impossible for me to do by myself. He did the removal of the old and install of the new tub, but he’ll also run the wiring for the lighting and install the toilet when I’m ready for him to do so. But since he’s been able to see my process at different times, he told me my work exceeds that of local pros he’s worked with. I did more screws in the subfloor, he said no one locally uses the 6” perimeter snd 8” in the field rule. Well, that’s why their floors creak 🤷🏻‍♀️ He also said the three layers of wallpaper removal & correction of the damaged drywall was insanely smooth, almost couldn’t believe I didn’t replace the drywall altogether! And my tiling is cleaner than even the person he routinely recommends to people he does handyman work for, he even took pictures and video of my work to show his person, to tell them to up their game 😂 I’m pretty dang proud of myself! Then he told me he’s just glad that I won’t touch plumbing or electrical (I’m not that brave or crazy) because if I did then we’d never need to hire him again 😂🤣😂
