- Mudroom & Bathroom Episode 1: DIY Schluter Ditra Installation - Today I am installing Schluter Ditra over my OSB wood subfloor in the mudroom and adjoining bathroom. This is the underlayment for the tile I will be laying on the floor. It acts as an uncoupling membrane, so when you have movement in the wood subfloor, it will not be transferred to the tile and crack it. When installing over wood subfloor, you must use a modified thinset that meets ANSI A118.11 standards. I used a ¼” x 3/16” v-notched trowel.
This is a DIY project. I am doing all of the tile in our new house. I am not a professional !!!

Great video. I’ve done plenty of tile throughout the years but never used this product and doing my bathroom now and going to use it. In past done Hardi. Great explanation and god bless you when it comes time to grout. That’s a huge amount your tackling kudos. If I can give a tip. Please get use to using knee pads. I’m 59 and always was like pssh. Just had replacement last year and the others ready to go. Bad knees makes basic life miserable. Thanks again for tutorial. I will be following your advice.

I love to do this kind of work! I live in a gated community where the woman never lift a finger lol I Guess I’m the black sheep of the community because I do it all lol even my landscape. I get some of the craziest looks. I’m finishing a back patio and outdoor kitchen soon and I will be laying tile with this method.

It's a really good system. Engineers for schluter made a roll out depth gauge of how much thinset they want to sell you. Allset is made by schluter and it is the ferrari of thinset but also the most expensive. Some people knew how to mix sand and cement together and make it flat. They then cemented the tile to that flat cement. Those floors went on to be over a hundred years old and are the cheapest way to do it still.
You did good but your trowel notches should all be in the same direction
you need to show how you keep tools, hands and area clean through all this
Always install your matting in as fewer pieces as possible I.e in a continuous run
Is this OSB you didn't show to screw floor floor then use appropriate OSB sealer before Ditra ?
Awesome video! I just did my first Ditra today- I think the next time it will go a little better-I forgot to get one part of the floor wet first -but I think it will look fine after I put the tile on-It might not last as long but, it’s a small bathroom!! As a female I find it inspirational that you show us how to do these tasks wearing appropriate protective clothing instead of tight tank tops and very short shorts-much respect👌

Great job; I was wondering if I missed the part of the Kerdi strips laid out for all the cut lines and joined together with a bit of mortar between all the pieces, thus tying all the Ditra together to make it a continuous waterproof unit. Thank you for taking us through your journey.
No, you didn't miss it. I didn't do that. In the past, I have done that to the joints right in front of the shower/bathtub (and only there), but this time I didn't have any joints there, so didn't do it. I have never felt the need to have the entire floor completely waterproof. The first time the toilet overflows, I might change my mind🤣
@CountryGirlLiving as someone who found your video in the process of cutting out layers of water damaged underlayment in my entire kitchen all due to a cracked drain pipe I will tell you....if you can waterproof your whole floor you better do it lol. I absolutely plan on sealing every Crack I can

My subfloor is 3/4 osb.. joists 16 on center. Is the osb+shluter membrane suitable for 12x24 tile? Or do I have to thicken my floor?
I used a specific sealer over OSB THEN INSTALLED DITRA

I have got a high point by my doorway can I not use coupling membrane on the area and just use tile adhesive to get over the high point

What I don't get is, in this video, you put Ditra up to the wall along with thinset. I thought you needed to stay away from the wall at least a 1/4" for expansion? no?
Great job but I notice you did not leave a 1/4 in around the borders for expansion. Could be a problem if you leave in a climate with changing seasons

One small point, when you lay your Ditra, the notch lines aren't all running the same direction consistently so that air can escape. You want to do this for tile too. You can see what I am referring to at 5:25 and 7:19 that the notch lines are inconsistent. Probably not a big deal, but it's a good practice.
Thanks for the advice. I do that when I am laying tile, but for some reason I never made the connection that I needed to do that for the ditra too🤣 I will do it the next time. No more crazy swirls
Actually doesn't matter with ditra. (does with tile) The air escapes through the fleece up into the ditra cavities under the ditra. Put your mouth on the underside of ditra and blow. Air escapes fine. Of course do directional if you can, if not its OK
She's pushing the air out when she compresses it with her grout float , just like when you get the air bubbles out of your wallpaper or underlayment fabric

I am sorry, I can't remember exactly which thinset I used. But as long as it says somewhere on the bag that is meets or exceeds ANSI A118.11 bond strength requirements, then it will be good. I want to replace the vinyl squares in my kitchen with tile. The subfloor is 3/4" planks with 1/2" plywood over top of it. Can I use this directly over the vinyl or do I have to tear out the vinyl and put this over the wood subfloor? Thanks!
I never had that kind of subfloor but I wouldn't do that. The sticky tile or sheet vinyl is very easy to remove. I bought a scraper and it came up with a lot of elbow grease. Some parts will be heavily glued and you might require knee work in those areas. I still would suggest that because once you put tile down, you're talking about big issues to remove it. It doesn't come up without heavy machinery or breaking each piece. Subfloors are very important in the structure. They need to be level, otherwise, your tile will not sit flat or join correctly. This means you will trip or stub your toe on the edges. Vinyl buckles in spots and is typically just laid without attention to the subfloor. I've tiled a lot of floors, not just one, so that's my advice. Good luck with your project! PS. The scraper is as tall as a broom with a sharp blade on the end. You get the blade under the vinyl and scrape hard. It comes off in pieces, think about scraping a glued label off of a jar, just like that.
Is it ok to apply the ditra to an OSB with thinset? I've read somewhere that it should be applied on a plywood subfloor and not on OSB.

Ditra should be laid the same direction throughout and don't cut at doorways as they are weak points where joints/tiles can fail.
Hey Country Girl, me again. I am having trouble deciding which unmodified thinset mortar to use on top of the Ditra. I am installing 8x8 porcelain tiles on our bathroom floor. No one around my area sells All Set and the big box stores do not carry Kerabond anymore. The Ditra instructions say to use modified thinset on the OSB subfloor and unmodified on top of the Ditra. Any suggestions? Signed, confused in Virginia.

Can this product be installed over existing bathroom linoleum or sheet vinyl (builder grade) or does it have to be removed?
It will need to be removed down to the subfloor so the thinset can bond to it.
@@CountryGirlLiving I just finished tearing out the underlayment down to the subfloor and am in the process of sanding down high spots and adhesive to get the floor as level as possible. I really did not enjoy tearing out the underlayment! Live and learn. Ha.
Hello. How did you waterproof osb? What did you use?
I didn't waterproof the osb. Just put the thinset right on it. The ditra will waterproof the floor under the tile. And you can go a set further by using fabric tape and liquid membrane on all the joints of the ditra. Kerdi makes specific products for that. I chose not to do that.

Osb itself will never be waterproof. It is however, extremely resistant to rotting so perfect for substrates and shed roof structures
How thick was your subfloor prior to the membrane?
3/4 inch osb

Why do you need to install this? Will tile not stick to osb?
This is an uncoupling membrane. So it "uncouples" the tile from the osb subfloor. That way if there is movement or expansion/shrinking in the subfloor, it won't be transferred to the tile and cause cracks. You can also use cement board for this purpose. Setting tile directly on the wood subfloor is not ideal.

@@23aldeezy Yes, it is. Except at the seams. You have to take a few extra steps to make the seams waterproof. Which I did not do.

Make sure you are using ANSI 118.11 thinset. Also, you might have mixed the thinset too thick. It needs to be a little thinner/wetter than normal so it will stick to the back of the ditra
