    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  2 месяца назад +1

      using a multi surface bonding primer is a great way to get a great bond to Osb. I highly recommend it as a great way to protect yourself from delamination which can occur if your thinset is too dry when applying. the primer effectually makes the install almost idiot proof. Cheers!

  • @embracethesuck1041

    One reason I would use a paintable/trowelable crack membrane (Redguard) instead of this is the addition of the height of the floor. If you can just get away with a slightly angled t-molding, this might raise your floor too high.

    • @stevenperry4941
      @stevenperry4941 2 месяца назад +2

      Doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. IMHO the point is to fill the Ditra and bond the tile at the same time with the same thinset. His recommendation to use Schluter All Set is perfect as it works for adherence to the plywood and the tile to the Ditra!

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY

      you cannot use modified thinset to fill the ditra. it will not bond. and your tile install will be weak and fail from deflection. Cheers! not worth buying a bag of modified since you use so little of it anyway for setting the membrane.

      Probably fine without the ditra but remember concrete sweats so best to still use it even if your slab doesn't have cracks. I used some for my fireplace floor tiles because they would sweat if the ground is cold and fire going. Eventually that breaks down the thinset bond

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY

      1970n was before building code so there are many varieties of concrete under tile. if it was a 2" pour then it all must be removed and then build back from there. if it is a thinner pour it might also have metal lathe in it. in that case remove back to subfloor. and then screw down and prep for ditra. to be completely sure join the membership and send me a photo on our forum. I can advise from there. Cheers!

    Hi there, I am replacing my tile baseboard in my bathroom, I will be cutting 9” all around my bathroom so much easier to take off that way and save time, when putting back the new drywall do I have to crack fill or put the new tile over the drywall?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  2 месяца назад +1

      if the tile is going to be cut the same height then simply screw the drywall on and tile away. Cheers! the use of caulking the plastic edging on the tile to the drywall will guarantee no cracks will form.

      I buy mine from a tile supplier where I have my contractor discount and get a better deal. the cost is not a real concern. having a tile job fail is a much bigger problem. For me the ditra membrane is now part of all my assemblies.

    Can somebody tell me the benefits of using ditra vs cement board for floor tile? Genuinely curious!!!

    • @josephstanczak4340
      @josephstanczak4340 11 дней назад +1

      Ditra is an uncoupler material with an added benefit of providing some waterproofing. Cement board is not an uncoupler, so it is possible as the floor shifts or expands and contracts, tile or grout may crack. Ditra allows the subflooring to do its thing and the tile is left unscathed.

    Is the PRIMARY use of that membrane simply to prevent tiles from cracking? or is there more to it? Built our home 20 years ago without this and not 1 cracked tile in kitchen, bathrooms, and front entrance - so trying to understand why I would 'invest' in this when redoing my floors. Thank you.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  2 месяца назад +1

      this replaces the need for a second layer of osb on wood floors before doing a direct bond install. it also prevents delamination that occurs during extreme weather events when the power goes out making the install a 50 year floor instead of one that will fail under certain conditions.

    What is the purpose of the membrane? Does is protect the floor from Water? Or is it to protect the tile from breaking?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  2 месяца назад +1

      it does 4 main things. waterproofing, ands structure to reduce deflection, and provides a uncoupling system to protect tile from cracking due to expansion and contraction that occurs on direct bonding installations, it also acts as a crack isolation system so when installed on concrete if the concrete cracks that crack will not translate into the tile as well.

    Hey I have been working with my father renovating bathroom but we never use this stuff. Main reason is the material is way to expensive and doubles the client cost. We use hardy board (cement board) for the shower and for the shower floor I see him put a mortar mix then a grey plastic follow by another layer of cement mix. Sorry I crude info I’m only now learning the trade as a 2 month apprentice. Is my dad doing things wrong or just an old way of waterproofing a shower?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  2 месяца назад

      that style is perfectly acceptable according to building code. It also is a very low cost option to get a decent result. This product will out perform cement board since cement board is a direct bond installation process and does not provide protection from expansion and contraction like a membrane will. however if your working in a market that is looking for value vs longevity then his system is fine. Cheers!

    Another great video Jeff! I’m in the middle of my bathroom renovation. Using the wedi system. Question for you:
    I want to mitre my outside corners but not sure if I can just use grout or if I need to use epoxy. And if I do need to use epoxy, any specific one you recommend?
    Also, I’ve seen you remove MANY toilets throughout your videos and the awkward positioning that your son has to take. You must try liquid lock if you haven’t yet!

      definitely yes. it has so many advantages compared to direct bond installs. once you factor in the cost of a second layer of plywood compared to traditional installs you are almost breaking even. remember you don't need to have 2 layers of subfloor when using this.
