My SCHLUTER KERDI Shower is 7 yrs. Old --- You Should See This!!!

  • From 2012 to 2018 our company installed hundreds of Schluter Kerdi showers. We stopped doing them, based in part on my test results that showed that if left submerged for a period of time it would leak. But I have found that although it leaks when submerged for several days, it does not leak when the shower is allowed to dry in between uses.
We have three bathrooms done in our home that were all done using Schluter Kerdi products for waterproofing. One bathroom was completed in 2014, the other in 2015, and the last one in 2018. I'll show you how they have held up over time, what the maintenance issues are, and if there are any failures.

I just did an entire gut of my master bathroom; used all Schluter products (1/2 inch Kerdi board, Kerdi membrane, Kerdi band, Schluter’s tileable grate, Ditra Heat Duo, Schluter WiFi thermostat, Schluter All Set, and Kerdi Fix) after watching your various videos and it came out absolutely awesome! I couldn’t have done it without your motivational assistance!! Thank you for all that you do Isaac!

4:00 My fav in your house by far; as I just LOVE big bathrooms and especially BIG SHOWERS. I’m also a big fan of doorless and curbless showers as well. Nice work on the 3 baths, look amazing and in great shape.
Bath 1 looks brand new even and bath 2 & 3.....like the accent walls, they make the tile install POP!
Appreciate the tests you do, and your attention to detail (it’s what make you and your team great at what you do; you won’t “settle” & redo something if “not quite right”).
Thx for sharing your house with us and helping out the tile and trades communities 👍🏻
    Cheers✌🏻

Hello Issac, Videos don't get much newer than this! Thanks for sharing your own bathroom tiling jobs. Looks and design are important factors , but performance over time is even more noteworthy. My Wife and I have been going back and forth for an upcoming bathroom reno between Kerdi Board or Laticrete Hydro Ban Board to go direct to studs. After watching a comparison video of the two that you did, I'm leaning more towards the Hyro Ban.. Otherwise, nice work!

I love your videos. I have been binge watching them for the last few weeks. Lots of great info. Last week my daughter decided to make a boat out of her tub. She flooded our kitchen down stairs and we ended up having to call the insurance company for a dry out. Some water pooled under the tub. I have been trying to figure out how to make her bathroom water tight since. And the best products to use.

Entering this conversation very late but RUclips is only popping these Kerdi videos now. I had a full shower install in my condo unit done in 2007 and when I sold in 2015 it was in excellent condition. Nothing had degraded and there were no leaks into my unit or the areas connected below. In 2015 i had another full Kerdi shower install and a second shower tub install built in my new condo. Both if those showers are now 9 years old and again I have never had a leak in my unit to the kitchen or living room areas that are beneath these two bathrooms. I certainly feel that contractors can make errors in the overall instal of the product or finishes that may lead to a break in the system and water damage but I feel from 16 years experience over all that if you have a vigilant installer Kerdi is a good shower system that will last for years. I will use it again if I ever do another Bathroom shower renovation.

I’ve been tying to finish my three story custom home in phases since 2008. The two 3rd floor bathroom’s tiling was the last and most dreaded phase of this ordeal. Thanks to your videos my tile work has been turning out great. I’d be willing to do tiling for extra income but it takes me way too long to do the work - no one could afford to pay me by the hour. So far I’ve tiled all the floors in a 1,200 SF house, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a den in another home and now this my current project. All this work has been on my own properties. You have been an invaluable resource. Many Thanks from an old electrician.

Just finishing up now, a little grouting still left. This was a marathon project but I’m quite pleased with how it’s turned out. I decided to just trust the Kerdi membrane as is. I think my final installation is on par with a professional installation but it took me months to complete it. I resorted to back buttering each individual tile. It was the only way I could get the walls and floor perfectly even without lippage.

I have a bathroom from 2004 where I used (in those days) large format 450x300mm tiles, with separate a shower stall and bath area. It uses Wedi board on stud on 2 walls and light blockwork on the other walls. The shower floor is a solid ceramic single tray, and grout is a standard waterproof grout. No sign of problems, though the sealant had to be replaced due to sign of mold and the shower thermostat had to be changed in the wall - showing no sign of any problems (such as water ingress of failure of wedi board in the stud wall).

I completely tore out my old shower and tar pan when I first heard of Kerdi. I had no prior knowledge of how to even attempt a shower installation.
I learned of Kerdi installation from a 3 minute description on "This Old House" and was awestruck. And an hour of research convinced me that I could do a good job.
I don't think Kerdiboard was a thing yet but the membrane worked perfectly. Now looking at it about 15 years later, it has proven to come out perfect. I'm certain I would have screwed it up using any of the old methods. I consider Schluter's product a total gift to DIYers.

This is my 2nd shower although my 1st curbless and 1st considering Schluter pan. Was going to go with linear drain at full width of shower entrance using Schluter offset pan and then waterproofing the rest of the bathroom but seeing your upkeep issues on the linear drain am rethinking this. Can I use the flow FX drain on a Schluter offset drain pan? Can the hydroban sealant be used on kerdi band? I've seen you use unmodified thinset but another video shows need for Ardex 8 & 9 to be fully waterproof.

That’s crazy, I to have had some issue with TEK power grout. Very interesting. You mentioned re-grouting. How would you go about re-grouting? Do you have to remove old grout completely? Or can you clean, and throw new grout over it? You mentioned some spots have washed away. Maybe you can do a video on how to properly re-grout ?

Nice... What would you think about using a polyaspartic (garage floor covering) as a membrane/top/everything?
Or would that just look ugly, even with paint chips?

What about Laticrete Spectralock? I used it and so far looks great. Curious if you use. Gotta work fast!

Your help and advice has been invaluable to me. I’m almost done with my bathrooms. Would you recommend putting red guard over my kerdi membrane just in the shower pan?

Hey I def can't speak for Isaah but I did see a video where he painted Ardek 8+9 over a membrane.... who know if he would suggest that, though??

Nice. Did you seal the polyblend and do you reseal periodically? TEC did reformulate Power Grout a few years ago. Maybe it has improved (though, we're a Laticrete company)
