omg, I'm hooked on these videos! I've never done any type of renovation but I'm fascinated by this entire process because Jeff makes everything look so easy (even though I'm pretty sure it's not) but that.'s because Jeff obviously knows exactly what he's doing. Thanks Jeff!
Just found your channel a week ago and I'm very impressed to say the least. I'm just amazed with how well you can get your knowledge across to the average Joe, you're just a natural at this, and great content too. Thanks from New Brunswick!
Thanks for all the explicit instruction. I'm at the stage of having all the Kerdi-board installed and the majority of screw/washers waterproofed with 2-in-1. About to thinset (Kerabond T) the Kerdi band on the seams. (BTW I asked you to clarify a remark you made in a response to Josh .... like 9 months ago, but I saw it just now and elaborated my confusion about Kerdi-band overlapping bottom of Kerdi-board and the flange it abuts... if you would be so kind, after you set me straight on this current question, that I'm about to get to) Anyway, I will have my 12-inch-by-24-inch porcelain tiles overlapping the bottom of the Kerdi board and hiding the tub/shower-pan flange by about an inch. So, should I shove some 2-in-1 into the bottom of the gap where the tiles will almost touch the tub/shower pan deck? AND, if I do that, should I leave some weeping hole gaps in the bead of 2-in-1? This was advised by another DIY video guy (ahem! coff-coff-floor elf coff-coff... not mentioning any names). He sez the Kerdi or other waterproofing behind the tiles is definitely water-proof, but the tile layer (notably grout) won't be totally waterproof, so any moisture that gets through and is trapped back there has an opportunity to exit via the weep holes. Sounds fishy when you have all that thinset in there, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks for your excellent teaching videos. Contractors everywhere are going to lose a lot of business correcting home-owner mistakes that might not happen, now. :-)
Love your channel! Wondering what you do around the lip of the tub where the kerdi sits. I have my board installed but get differing opinion on how to proceed from here. One channel recommended using unmodified cement and kerdi band to create an overlap across the base of the kerdi board and the lip of the tub. Any thoughts on this?
I love this system! Think I can do this with only a plumber, even as a single gal. I know this is an old video, but I want to ask: my walls seem to have no sign of mold at all. Even the old pink insulation I removed looks almost pristine. There's just a bit of mildew behind the tar paper and I wonder what to replace the tar paper with, especially on the two exterior walls (brick on frame construction).
Hi Jeff, I have questions. Trying to building a steam shower which water proofing system do you recommend? (Shower is a master bathroom and on the second of the house) cement board? kerdi membrane? Kerdi board?
Hey Jeff, is there anything special you have to do at the outside border where the Kerdi board meets the drywall of the bathroom wall? Great video thanks a lot.
I always run my Kerdi flush with my drywall. I make my Kerdi short at least by 2”. I tape the joint with Kerdi Band from the ceiling down to the floor. The reason I do this is so that the tile actually starts on the Kerdi banded drywall and bridges onto the Kerdi Board. I also use Schluter profile strips on the edge of the tile.
I see that you use Pex ”B”. Have you ever thought about switching over to Pex ”A” by Uponor? I use the Dewalt Pex tool to expand the pipe and fittings because it is SOOOO fast!!! 1500 psi of pressure are each connection.
First off I would like to say thanks for all your videos, I've learned so much from watching them. I am in the middle of a bathroom renovation in which I am going to use the Kerdi board. I have read several articles in forums online that state that having a vapor barrier behind this waterproof system as it can create a "moisture sandwich" and is not recommended, if possible could you please advise me of the pros or cons to having the vapor barrier as I was unable to find the answer on the companies website. Thanks and keep up with the great videos.
If I have Kerdi fix should I use that where the Kerdi board and drywall meet? (I see in your video you used that other caulk.) Would I then sand it before I tile or paint?
In this video you use Lepage 2 n 1 Sealant adhesive. Can't get that in US. Would you know if Loctite PL Heavy Duty Sealant or other Loctite product could be used instead?
I like your product substitution mentality. Was just contemplating the seemingly overpriced $30 Kerdi trowel and $30 Kerdi Fix. Lowes tile guy said he has to fight to keep kerdi board available and they will not let him stock Kerdi Fix for some reason. I've had to cobble my kerdi shower system together from various suppliers and online as neither HD or Lowes carry everything needed. Why sell the freaking boards and fabric but not the All Set, trowel and kerdi fix? Good video.
My only question is obviously the Kerdi board is thicker than the mounting flange for the tub so where the bottom of the Kerdi board meets the flange and you sealed it wouldn't the Kerdi board stick out a good bit and make that seam an issue? Either that or I assume you have a shim of some kind behind the screws for the tub mount? Couldn't you also run the Kerdi board all the way to the floor before installing the tub and then seal that seam? Thanks
Your videos have been a world of help to me. On Kerdi-Board, Schluter only refers to the outer orange membranes as "fleece webbing for effective anchoring in thin-set mortar." I'm not sure the orange material here is the same as the waterproof Kerdi membrane. TBD, but the waterproofing component may only be the polystyrene foam. I'm not sure the cut in half trick for small vehicle transport mentioned at 4:15 will maintain waterproofing.
Hi John, the fleece is also made from plastic and is waterproof, for added protection you could use the kerdi fix in the fold before straightening oit the board.
Once the kerdi board is in place do you just glue the tiles on? My tub/shower has plastic tiles that fell off and a hole at the faucet. I'm trying to get down to the studs to put up the kerdi board then re attach the tiles.
Schluter products might be a tad pricey, but done right; they are made to last & rather spend little extra at beginning, then having to repair or redo the shower in next 5-7 yrs! Really like the Kerdi products & the ease of use(once ya know what doin'), just wish was easier to buy the schluter no sag easy bond cement & "caulking" at the local box stores. One would think, they sell the other products, so why not that stuff.....?? Love these vids, just wish longer & more😉 Cheers, A Not sure if have done, but think seeing a vid on repair & fixing(regrouting) a shower etc...would be pretty interesting. If I'm using a prefabricated shower pan with this system would I butt it up the way you did or I stall in front of the lip butting up to the shower base ledge?
Need to install this within a day or 2 and I can't get the gasket for the valve locally, is there another way I can seal with with silicone or something? Thanks!
@Kizz, just to clarify your concerns, correct me if I'm wrong here, but in order for Kerdi Board to turn a "small fire into a life taking inferno', wouldn't the whole bathroom have to be on fire and either the tiles which are impervious to flame have fallen off to allow access to the Kerdi, or the walls have burned down from the other rooms to reach the Kerdi? In either scenario, I don't see how a 'small fire' is going to even reach the Kerdi product. Help me to understand your thinking on this.
Just bought $600 worth of Kerdi-board supplies for my shower. This video is a great help. I just need to find the right caulk, Kerdi-fix is $26 a tube here in Colorado and that LaPage 2 in 1 isn't sold here. Any thoughts on how I can select the right caulk?
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thanks, so the shower has a window that was just damaged drywall and a standard sill. I had to take it down to wood frame. I plan on using some of the kerdi to actually replace the sill and place over the rough wood window frame and then I'll tile over that. Anything unique or different I should do? It looks pretty straight forward but you never know.

I had to fur out the wall in the bath and my kerdi board now sticks out past the bathtub flange. Is it ok to go down to the bathtub base with the kerdi board leaving a gap between the board and the bathtub and then filling with kerdi fix?
Thanks for the video! What about the joint between the kerdi board and Sheetrock? What is recommended? Schluter thinset or regular plaster? The joint is around 8 inches from the shower. Thx
I have some overhang from the .25" Kerdi board and my tub tile flang. Can I run Kerdi board over the tub flange, leaving a small gap to seal with Kerdi Fix to the tub? so in other words the studs and tile flang on 2 of the tub sides are pretty close, closer than the thickness of the Kerdi board. Or do I need to shave down my stud walls so the Kerdiboard rests above the tub tile overlay and it's flush between the two?

Is this product better then Cement board or hardier backer? I’m doing my bathroom and I’m just wondering. Also do u need a vapor barrier or does the red guard act as a vapor barrier if I go the cement board route? Thank u for ur time
I've patched the large shower wall with Kerdi-Board. The other 2 walls are plaster, which I was going to use Eco Prim Grip on (also wanted to use Aquadefense). I'm having a hard time figuring out what mortar to use for the ceramic tile. Can I use Schluter All-Set on both, for everything? I thought I saw one of your videos that showed Schluter is now offering modified mortar that can be used on it's Kerdi. Is that it? Was that a dream? Which Mapei/Schluter mortar(s) should I get? Thank you!
Love the channel. Shower tear down as we speak due to your videos. Quick question. What is the best waterproof way to mount a shower door to a kerdi curb? Should I put backer board over it to give the rail something to screw into?
I am doing a bathroom remodel, there seems to be some mold on the ceiling about the tub. Should I use the foam backer board on the ceiling as well just to be safe?
Wouldn't have to unless you're doing a steam shower. But you could use Kerdi membrane for the ceiling if the bathroom tends to get steamy whilst using the shower. Use Kerdi band between it and the Kerdi board just like you would for the seams and washers with screws used to install the Kerdi board to the wall studs.
The valve my client selected does NOT fit into the provided 4 1/2” guard. How do I seal the opening before putting on the trim cover?? It’s my first time with schluter. Thanks
Hi Robert. The reason that guard does not fit is simple. Most quality valve companies have a face plate that is snapped into place against another fixed plate that is screwed to the valve and comes with a gasket that sits against the tile to keep the water out. In this situation the schluter guard is not necessary! The guard you are referring to is designed to deflect water that gets behind the face plate of the cheap valves covers that have poorly designed gaskets and /or face plate screws like moen and delta.

Thank you!
Can you use this board on the floor as well?
What thunder do you use with kerdi board
If you had to choose. Would you use this or that cement board?
schluter every time. hands down 10 times better. and worth the extra 50 bucks
Thanks for the video always get a lot of knowledge from your channel
Happy to share Lucas, Cheers!
Love the channel. Shower tear down as we speak due to your videos. Quick question. What is the best waterproof way to mount a shower door to a kerdi curb? Should I put backer board over it to give the rail something to screw into?
Schluter makes curbs for bonding to their pans and you use kerdi band to bond it
Another fine video. Thanks.
Thanks "X" glad to hear you enjoyed it. Cheers!
Do you have a video of installing the surround over the kurdi board?
I am doing a bathroom remodel, there seems to be some mold on the ceiling about the tub. Should I use the foam backer board on the ceiling as well just to be safe?
Wouldn't have to unless you're doing a steam shower. But you could use Kerdi membrane for the ceiling if the bathroom tends to get steamy whilst using the shower. Use Kerdi band between it and the Kerdi board just like you would for the seams and washers with screws used to install the Kerdi board to the wall studs.
You make great videos. Thank you so much
Would you put this on an exterior basement block wall
Can you put a Kerdi-Shower Pan directly on a concrete floor? If so, what do you use to bond it to the floor?
Awesome man, thanks for all your videos.
Cheers Patrick, thanks for watching and commenting.
You are a good man! How do you build the shower pan for walk in shower any videos you would recommend ? Thanks
Can put kerdi board above tap's tung or behind it as show in the video?
love it but can't buy lepage 2 in 1 in CA
Late to the party, as usual. What do you do to seal the board at the ceiling joint? Thanks!
Ok but whats the proper way to mud between the Kurdi board and the basic drywall?
