DIY Garage Storage Shelves

- DIY garage storage shelves that are low profile, off the floor and open faced. I don't want my shelves to go from floor to ceiling.
I still want to be able to place floor objects against the wall in this part of my garage. I also want these shelves to be 8 feet
long and open faced. Open faced meaning nothing secured vertically to the front of the shelves that would infringe on the eight
foot shelf length. Load bearing weight capacity was also factored into the design of these shelves as well.

Thanks for the idea on the shelves. I just built 5 of these on one wall in my garage while I'm in isolation. I liked building my brackets this way as it is very sturdy. I already had spare 2x4s so I didn't have to buy anything but a sheet of plywood some more wood screws. Also I like that no supports touch the ground so I easy sweep up the floor without anything in the way. Thank you again for sharing this build!
OSB is amazing, I made an outdoor step(just piece of osb screwed to 2x6 box frame) leading into my shed. It isn't sheltered from the weather in any way...snow, sleet, rain, ice and/or blazing sun. That was 14yrs ago! Its still going strong. Great shelf build, thanks for sharing! 4:38
My favorite video on Lumber rack i’ve seen so far. Thanks for the Video
That saw attached to a shop vac...GENIUS! I've been away from woodworking too long. Great vid. Tnx 1:29
Thanks for the great video Stan. I used your approach to put shelving in my garage.
Simply simple, yet super cool. Nice work there.
Excellent video as usual. Glad to see you included your little "helpers" in the project. They will learn some responsibility and pride in helping out. 2:42
OMFG - use the speed square as a guide... that just blew my mind! So simple and obvious yet this is the first time I've ever considered doing that. I now feel stupid for years of avoiding my circular saw due to my exceptional ability to not cut a straight line. I know it was just an off-hand thought for you, but thanks anyway you just changed my shop life. 1:27
This was the BEST video I've found on youtube for floating shelves! The way you speak, the way you explain, makes me feel very confident I can do this! thank you so much! I liked and subscribed! 4:36
Thank you for the kind words.
wow, so helpful and clear -- and what a professional looking shelf! Thanks for your generosity! 2:38
Thanks for this vid, just what I was looking for with plans!
Always enjoy your videos, Stan. Thanks.
+Robert Mazzitelli Thanks, glad to hear it.
Well done!!
Stan,
I would like to make some shelves like this but 24” deep. I assume I just make adjustments to the lengths. Do you think that will hold 100-200lbs/linear ft. It will span 8’/11’/12’?
I noticed you put your brackets in the corner of your garage. Can you move these out and leave a little extra space into the corner if you're not loading the shelves too heavy?
from the ceiling to the bottom of the 3rd shelf, what is the height? I'm about to start a unit just like yours but would like gap distance between all 3 and full length
What were your spacing measurements of the brackets going up and down and left to right ?
Stan- I have bare studs in my old hickory shed. I love your design for the brackets. Could you please send me a cut list for 1qty 8'L x2' d shelf and brackets?
Thanks
shorts and T-shirt middle of January.. not bad at all. I made similar for my shop using just pallet wood and scaps, inspired by IKEA Ekby Valter brackets.
+havenisse2009 Nice.
Great job. Like it so much.I might give it a try. Thanks for sharing.❤
Thank you! 😊
Nice shelves Stan, can you name some of the tools you used in this project, the drill and the circular saw to cut the plywood in particular.
Awesome stuff! I'm really new to woodworking. I'm going to make shelves like these in my garage for my power tools. I'm wondering why @0:37 you say that gravity is going to be your friend on this one. It looks like the two pieces that make your L are right about the same size. What am I missing?
would your design hold up around 400 lbs? how could it be modified to do so if not?
i love ur shirt, it looks so cozy! 2:53
very neat and tidy looking mate
Anybody else wish they had a handy man like him👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽✅ 5:31
Hi, Nice video. Could you tell me the weight limit program called that you mentioned?
How thick pywood for shelf?
Definitely looks easier than other floating shelves I've seen. Thanks!! 1:17
Great vid, you "cut" to the chase without a lot of chatter, very useful.
Hi Stan, you mentioned a program to help you calculate load. Is it a commercial product or something you came up with?
Mello Kevt did you receive a response on this as I'm wondering the same as well.
a year later... but I think he used this:

I like your design 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I like those shelf's going to make me some. Thanks Stan. GO BRONCOS!!!!!
+Buddy Bouchez Ohh boy. Whats a Chiefs fan to do? I'll give a go Manning but thats all you're gettin.
lol
Amazing idea!!! 1:18
Fantastic 👍🏻👌🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Is this a imperial ton or a metric ton you're talking about? 5:36
I gotta make this these shelves u said can hold up to 300lbs each?
Your nail gun magically changed colors. ;)
+Caleb Burnett Hahaha! You're right, I didn't even notice that in editing. I had to go back and re watch the video to find out what you were talking about. I'm not even sure why I changed guns.
Hello, is that a masonry wall or a stud wall?
Man, this is a great idea. Thank you 3:11
I NEED TO KNOW HOW U MADE THE BRACKETS PLEASE!!!
Nice
not bad my friend!
Definitely a handy storage project. 3:19
What was the angle you used?
I really want to get a good job to buy a house and try all these 😭💓💓 (you inspire me a lot =) ) 5:27
what angles did u cut those boards at 45°?
How much did it cost and how much time total?
is there a reason why you didn't make the shelves deeper, like up to the garage door?
keep making the great vids!
+James Phelps (jphelps) Various reasons really. Personally I don't like deep shelves. Things get too easily lost behind other things. So I take measurements of the most common items I'm going to store and build accordingly. Also that top shelf is already limited on what I can easily stick up their due to the Garage door rail. Personal choice basically.
This looks amazing!!! ❤️❤️❤️ 5:55
Excellent craftsmanship! Will you be doing more videos like this soon?
Why 10" top piece of base but 12" osb
At 3:30 what’s the purpose of the piece you added in the front? Not sure it’s supporting anything, is it for looks? I recently completed something like this but may need that 2x2 you added on the back. Again, wanted to know function of the front piece.
Additional support to prevent sagging
Stan Sullivan
thank you sir!
@Stan Sullivan Do you mind explaining how it prevents sagging? I was looking to do something similar, I do basic woodworking projects - but not many "structural" things. Why would that front piece provide extra support if its not anchored to any additional support? Also do you mind sharing that software you were talking about?
Howdy: Where is your link to the reference to cutting your support brackets. This is the closest thing to what I want to do (I think my idea will work with this. Thanks, good job. L.
Is it not in the description? Let me know if it isn't.
Oh I remember. The link appears on screen. The little exclamation point that pops up in the top corner when I'm talking about cutting boards to length with angles. Some where around the 20 second mark.
Love it, please may i know the exact measurement of your angle braces! Thanks!
45
Cool project but I would have used metal shelf supports, brackets with a diagonal brace take up a lot of space where you can't put long wooden planks.
What did you do to prevent it from moving/swinging 3:15
Those impact drivers are load , really ready laod
Bunkers and a cut list? There’s an RS2 guy!
The drill must be very loud! 😂
Haha. The sound of an impact driver echoing off concrete walls can be very loud yes. Plus one should always adhere to safety precautions that one deems necessary in any situation they are in. Even if those safety precautions seem trivial to others.
I was just about to comment.....Not to be snarky but to be teasing like....really bro...lol
