This gave me confidence to build it alone without help! Loved it. Keep up the great work! Videos are concise... no BS , appreciate how you fast forwarded some repeating sections! Thank you! Subbed!
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Just build a version of this with my dad over the weekend. We decided to go with 3 inch lag screws and washers for everywhere it connected to the wall (almost every stud along the back wall). We also decided to double up the 2x4s like some comments suggest under each shelve section(front and back). We also figured I wouldnt need the coat rack portion so i just evenly spaced the 4 shelves on each side (this doubled my workbench space) and for now I only put up one 8 foot section over the bench( mainly because my garage roof is shorter than the garage in the video) and this allows for more head room. Later we may throw the second 8 foot section up and build a larger work bench next to this and include a table saw. All and all this video was a great help (plus the comments from "concerned" viewers. Thank you all!!
can I please see a photo of yours , my sealing is too low also.
Built mine and it turned out great! I did take note of the comments below me regarding the need for stronger reinforcement. I have concrete walls in my garage, so i used concrete anchors to hold the back support frame. I used lag bolts where the shelf frames attach to the upright supports, in addition to screws. I bolted on relatively small pieces of 2x4 to the uprights, touching the bottom of each support frame to give more support. I'm convinced it's quite strong enough.....more than enough, to support the items on my shelf, which include a heavy brick wetsaw and a compound mitre saw. Thanks for the inspiration!
Just watched a few videos of similar garage shelving projects. This one provides the most practical approach to install the whole thing by a one-person team. It also allows for checking the shelves are level. Well done!
I agree! Easy to follow and I'm a newbie so going to attempt this!
I work in a related field and I was impressed with your design and the final result. Very nice.
Mike, thank you so much for your tutorial! I completed this project in 2 days and with a little bit more than 12 feet to work with (I just shortened the workbench to 4 feet). I've never constructed anything outside of IKEA furniture, never used a circular or miter saw, and the simplicity of this project, along with the drawings and thorough instructions made it relatively easy to accomplish. Thanks again!
That saw attached to a shop vac...GENIUS! I've been away from woodworking too long. Great vid. Tnx 1:23
This is the best garage shelf project I've seen in RUclips! That closet was so nice, I'm so in love with this! I'm currently planning my garage makeover project right now! Thanks so much for sharing!!! -Glor
I love that it’s simple and clean and easy to clean lol! Good job and the linkable lights, omg solution to my dark garage thanks 🤘🏽
Excellent video. Just finished my storage unit and it turned out great. I was so inspired by the video that I even bought the same mitre saw, driver, and HDX tubs.
My project was 12’ wide and 10’ high.
Just built this and works great total cost of materials fasters including was 255 bucks. Hard to beat for the amount of storage space you get.
Man this was perfect timing. I'm getting a shed tomorrow and I think a scaled-down version of this will be a perfect storage solution.
Same here. New shed tomorrow 🤘
Pretty sweet storage solution! I would however suggest adding a 2x4 to the front of the 2x4 shelf supports in the middle where the two sides meet to splint the shelf.
Agreed
Hi there,
I followed your video and built these shelves today. They are great! I made two changes. I shortened the lineup to 12 feet, but kept the closet. I also added toe-rails to the shelves, since we live in an earthquake zone. Don't want those totes topplin' down!
Great plans and video. I had to make several modifications due to size of garage and ceiling height, but turned out excellent. 8 Costco bins wide and added a plywood workbench area. Only recommendation for real world is the flat shelving pieces. That particle board isn't cheap, so I made do with what I had and some pieces didn't end on 2x4's. Solution was either to add perpendicular 2x4's in with pocket holes on back end or simply go parallel to existing supports. Added about 3 total supports. Looks awesome!
Looks great Mike! I wonder how long it will stay looking that organised! Awesome job
Really great video, I loved what I saw. great looking shelf.
Mike, I recently remembered your channel as I was pondering "what useful information could I seek out" combined with "I need a shelf for my storage unit." Thanks for high quality content as always, here's to 2m subscribers!
Great video. I like your intuitive approach to things. I sometimes have an idea and I'm just uncertain enough to get started, but you always help me shore up what I'm unsure about, which helps me get started--obviously the hardest part. Thanks for your help and work.
I like the closet section idea. Totally rad 🤙
This turned out great! I’m planning something similar for an attic storage project I’ve got coming up.
Right on!! Thanks Johnny. looking forward to seeing it!
Just saw you video!! Heck yea!!
I built this same rack/shelf in 2011, but much bigger, I used osb and metal brackets on 2×4, and recycled countertop for work bench...still looks great and keeps organization
Simple and efficient. I am going to do this my new house. Because I have a ton of projects that have lot of boxes the workbench is plus
Love this! I can’t wait to install it in my garage!
Mike, u did a hell of a job with those shelves. I'm going to try to build the same layout u did. Thanks again for this awesome how to do video@
I did a similar project about a year ago in this same style, down to the color/size of the plastic totes. Since I only planned on stacking totes on the shelves, I just ran 2x4s instead of laying MDF. I ended up making a rolling workbench that fits right into the shelving unit with leftover scrap. Everything is stored in a labelled tote. Nothing is just tossed up on the shelf. People walking by when my garage door is open walk up to compliment he arrangement all the time.
Today we used your video and plans as a basis to build a half sized version of your plan. I originally bought all of the materials you describe for the 16' wide monster but found it wasn't suitable for my garage in our new home. So instead we decided to go with a modified approach with just a single 8' span and a 4' workspace. We also had to make some tweaks to accommodate electrical outlets and other site specific constraints but in the end I couldn't be happier with the results. I hope this gives you inspiration to keep on doing more DIY instructional videos because it really helped us with our hope to build some awesome garage storage shelving for our new house.
I'm building one tomorrow thats 8ft with a 4ft work station as well hope it turns out as good as his just mini
one of my favorite youtubers hands down
Another great build, seems very DIY friendly. I'll have to save the plans for when I own my place.
One thing I'd recommend is considering 24" deep instead of 30". He used 30" for the totes he had, but if you build 24" deep, you can cut an 8'x4' sheet of plywood in half and make two shelves out of it with little to no waste and no need to store scrap wood for years and years and years... All my shelves have always been 16" or 24" deep and I've had no problems storing totes or anything else on them.
👍👌 I did sort of the same method in my closet few years ago, the only difference is that I chopped up old shelf unit into five shelves and attached to wood frame I created. Did the job as it filled whole width and from floor to ceiling. Oh and it's free standing as it an rental property. 🙂
You built this just as I'm working out how to replace some seriously warped cabinets in my garage... Thanks for the inspiration!
My man! Thank you for this video! I was legit about to spend a small fortune buying the brackets for wall mounted shelves. Not anymore..... this will save me a ton so thank you once again! 1:18
*Excellent as always, Mike*

That's amazing, I did my front room makeover myself. but now I need a space for my baking stuff. Saw some plastic storage boxes in Ikea. But I am now planning to make one on my own.
I really liked the finished product. Simple, effective, and inexpensive.
Now this is what I need in my garage for my new house.
I can do this, just need to adjusted for slight slope towards garage door. 👍
I’m doing mine right now. It’s slightly different based on needs, but it’s the same idea. I’m so pumped. Thanks for the video!
Man, that is a sweet setup! Thanks again for the good knowledge. I will be building something like this in my garage.
You should install some jack studs on the wall side in between each level and behind the 8in vertical studs to reinforce and support the weight of whatever you put on. Also maybe lag bolt the wall side to the studs. Other than that, this is a really nice build! Just depends on how much weights in those totes!
Nice job! I love the built in workbench. Personally, I would go with 24" shelves to reduce waste even if the totes stick out 6".
That’s exactly I am thinking. Is there anyone try 24”? Is it stable? Any successful project completed using 24”?
That's what I went with. 24" is perfect if your using a material for your shelf tops that comes in 4x8 sheets. Just *zip* right down the middle (longways of course) and you're done!
You're a genius! Thank you for an amazing video. Keep up the good work!
I created a set of shelves like this and it worked very well - the only variations I made was to use to make the shelves only 24 inches deep. I then picked up some 4x8 OSB sheets at Lowes and had them cut them down the middle so I had 2 2x8 boards. Saved some money on the number of sheets I needed and OSB works just as well as plywood for these purposes.
He must have a perfectly level garage floor too. Lucky guy.
I found a similar concept years ago (12) in a Family Handyman article. I realize this was made nearly 4 years ago but it seems the price of lumber is 3-4x what's in the video - a 2x4x8" is around $7 and 3/4" MDF (cannot find the particle board he references) is like $60, not $16. That kind of changes the economics of the video drastically.
Thats because the housing market has been crazy because the interest rate was locked in at 3.5% creating a shortage of wood because so many homes are being built and sold immediately. The price should go down by next year because it crashed last week, and interest rates have doubled for homes. it will take about a year and hopefully be a good time for home DIY carpentry again. Tempted to just start cutting trees in my back yard lol.
@@brooktech7869 lumber is already at pre-pandemic pricing and the rate wasn’t locked at 3.5%. You could get lower than that.
Great project, I love it. I will use this when I have a garage one day
Just finished mine. Love it! Thank you!
How about a short purpose built ladder at a slight angle to the 2nd highest shelf that hooks and slides along a small aluminum J channel along the front edge? Like an old style library ladder that can be removed and hooked out of the way around the left side there.
I’m building this now and will probably do something like this.
What do you mean exactly by built at a slight angle? picture? I built some shelves similar to this and would like a ladder as you suggested
I love these shelves so much. I want make a workbench on wheels instead of the stationary workbench.
Nice build. Simple and beautiful .
Just put up these shelves in my garage this past weekend. Very nice build and I'm really happy about the workbench section built in too. LED lights and pegboard going up soon :) Thank you for the helpful plans and details!
How much 2x4 did you end up buying for the project ?
awesome job! Thank you, I need to do this to my garage!
Love her channel too!!

This is the best! Is there a way you can share the plan or the meAsurement of this project?
I really like this setup. It’s just what I was after. This is definitely how I’m going to do my shelving setup. 👍
Great video, straight forward, simple yet very useful. Nice job!
Did something similar in my garage. Found that screwing in the 2x4 that goes against the wall first worked a lot easier. No need for a brace. Screw the first in. Then the next temporarily over that one, then the legs to that. Then remove the temporary screws and you have a perfect match to go out as far as you need.
Nice project. Consider using 3 1/2 inch screws on garage wall attachment instead of 3 inch since drywall is probably at least 5/8 thick for fire rating in a garage. Also consider putting a vapor barrier of some sort to avoid direct contact of wood on concrete.
Very nice my brother awesome project it's so cool :)
Nice work.Good idea. And that linkable light, that is super neat.I like this set of shelves.Gracias amigo 👍
Wow! Dats awesome 👏🏽 simple, easy and strong!
Needs to have a peg board at the back there and then it would be perfect 😍
and peg board sides at the work bench
And/or the sides
Great video!! I was just telling my wife this morning that we needed to finally build some storage in the garage. Were you eavesdropping on us?
Scott : he was in the closet!😀

Dude this is clean! Thanks for the vids excited to start something like this now that I have more time for things like this!! Be safe every one and God bless
Very nice set up!!!!I’ve been looking up different ways to do this. Now I found the one that will work best for me, thank you for the details.
Is there going to be a Gary sized one?
Great job !!! Quick question when you marked lines on wall. Did you find the studs or just screw the frames on drywall? Pls advise
To the stud.
This would be great for my husband to make. Thank you for making it easy for us.
Nice setup! I may build this once I am done with my shed.
Super simple and functional!! We were definitely laughing a bit when you were trying to add plywood to your cart, happens to us all the time lol 😋
EvanAndKatelyn I love seeing channels supporting eachother!♥️I watch and LOVE both of you!!!!!!
All. The darned. Time. 😉
EvanAndKatelyn ii
I'd recommend 3-1/2" screws for anyone that's going to do this instead of the 3" he used. The 2x4 is 1-1/2" deep and the drywall is at least 1/2" deep, leaving ONLY an inch of screw actually going into the wall stud.
Wouldn't it be better to use nails for the frame on this project since they provide much better sheer strength and don't get brittle in the cold? I'm amateur at best but unless I was hanging floating shelves I'd think nailing is the better thing to use. I'd only screw down the actual top of the shelves.
@@pompulousify You may use whatever fasteners you are comfortable with.
Myself, I have trusted life and limb on deck screws.
@Mozinwrath … and I've seen a shelf fail, sending expensive motorcycle helmets crashing into the door of a Challenger and the ground. Helmets trashed. Car damaged. Homeowners' insurance used. That shelf had held up for over ten years, then decided to fail. I'd bet money it wouldn't have failed had more screw been in the wall.
@Mozinwrath Unless you have a very expensive climate controlled garage, any wood shelving in it will expand and contract daily for weeks, months, years, decades... My original point was that he only actually used one inch to secure the board to the wall, and one point I didn't make is that the first 1/4" (or so) of that screw is tapered and not as useful as the other 3/4". Screws are cheap. Cheaper than plywood, so I see no reason not to add half an inch to the screw length. While I don't doubt it'll hold, there's no reason to take a chance. No reason not to spend a few extra bucks and make it "too strong" especially if your child or spouse (or anyone you don't want to sue you) might be in the garage with you at times. Always better safe than sorry. I'm not suggesting someone run out and spend thousands on Simpsons Strong-Tie supports.
Nice shelves! Looks neat and organized!
Great storage solution Mike! I think I need to redo my storage area after watching this.
Now I just need a garage the size of a small house 👌🏼
Lmao
FR this garage is twice the size of my apartment.
I have a garage the size of a small house. But I found a dumpster to be the best place to store rarely used items.
Nice build mike... now where is the info on those lights? haha
Hope your getting used to the weather out there!
Dave Strain seriously lol
I was looking for that also...needing some more.
Dave Strain where are the plans
Great job! I especially loved all the tips on safely doing the work alone
For sure! Thanks Terry
First a cinder stop block, now a battery! Awesome!

Look like red wing iron rangers copper rough and tough. If so i have the exact pair. Definitely worth the price tag imo.
Luv this, you use simple tools, simple methods and don't over complicate things.. 👍👍
This is awesome! Thank you very much. It realy helps me with my garage storage project. Two thumbs up from me. Keep up posting the great work.
What was your approx cost? Great video and nice design. Keep up the good work.
Scott Moore there is a link in description to full and detailed breakdown of everything used. FYI
i just did this build but i shortened it to 10’ long and it cost me $200
@@DAVIDISEPIC1111 What did you do to scale this? Shorten everything to scale or remove certain parts? Going to build one at 10' this coming week.
The long vertical 2*4s should be placed under the horizontal 2*4s, not just screwed into them. Why,?? The load is now on the screws not on the vertical 2*4s, this could be an unsafe build. Love your vid though, looks awesome
IBBYS would that then require him to break up the vertical 2x4 into 3 separate sections instead of one long continuous 8ft beam?
@@hockeynpolo1exactly and if you use the correct bolts for the load, it will be fine.
@Yo Mama Yeah. You just saved me a buncha work. Thanks!
Don’t you love it when no one helps you load your cart at the hardware store . BTW you should predrill your wall plate 2x4 and use a lag with a flat and lock washer. Deck screws aren’t meant to carry that kind of stress. They could shear. I’d put the 2x4 underneath or put 2 anchor bolts with washers and lock washers to secure. Remember to predrill. IF your paranoid like I am. I’d put a base plate down and bolt it down with some tap cons.
IBBYS could also do lap joints where the shelves meet the legs. Then the screws are only doing their designed job and no risk of sheer. While taking a little more time, still maintains a smaller budget.
Cool storage system. Like the work bench idea. I would add a sheet of 1/16th inch sheet metal, because I work on 2 and 4 cycle engines.
Great tutorial and just what I was looking for - sturdy floating shelves that are pretty easy to make and, as a bonus, on a budget. Thanks! 2:41
Oh man... that Home Depot struggle was all too real.
Haha!
3:59 good ol' Charlie Chaplin movie
dude that is an amazing practical build thank you for sharing . this this the kind of stuff that inspires me to build
I just subscribed to your channel. My son and I decided to make this system for our garage this past weekend and it turned out great. Thank you!
7/16 osb would have been a better choice for the shelving surface.
MDF is too heavy and useless if it gets wet. A garage is the last place to use it.
Fix the leak in your garage . MDF is fine
You can go to woodprix if you would like to make it yourself guys.
Or I could do it myself using this video as well...
Best to me
This is a great and easy to follow video on how to put this simple shelving unit together. My space is smaller and going to build an "L" shaped unit to fit onto 2 walls and meeting in the corner. Looking forward to making those corner joints work! Yeah and cost of lumber has doubled since you published this video 3 yrs ago.
Yea, need to Update that cost of the mdf sheets! Now 50$ a sheet and he has 5 of them. I wish they were still 16$
Once again, great video! Now going to take some ideas and add on to my work bench thanks to you... awesome video!
What was the total cost of this project, awesome video man!
Joshua Powell I would like to know too
Looking at the list of supplies...he probably spent about $200.
You forgot to link the lights
This is awesome! I already have a work bench so I'm going to retrofit it with these shelving plans.
awesome!! good luck!
This turned out great. Thanks for the tips and tricks!
The workbench in the center limits your ability to work on long pieces. Looks good though.
My husband used these plans from woodprix instructions and he's very satisfied.
I love that!

Looks awesome. Very clean looking. Consider some drawers under workbench part and/or under closet.
