    MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

Replace the edge of the table with a French Cleat. If you have a table saw available. Great video.

French Cleats will definitely be a good safety upgrade. They're easy enough to make with a circular saw as well.

Awesome build! Really appreciate the limited tool usage, too. Living in a small apartment in the city I have limited space and limited tools. So I'm always looking for some "low effort, low maintenance" projects to do. And this is definitely something to get inspiration from: I could very well imagine a build like this with smaller dimensions and without the electrics for a small balcony or so. That's the kind of content I subscribed to this channel for! :)

I was excited to hear you were making a compact version of your previous workbench on the podcast. This turned out great! Will definitely need to takes notes as I will be re-working the bench in my basement at some point (the previous owner made a really good bench, but it's covered in mounds of...something and wall organization was a board with seemingly random nails).

The simplicity of tools and materials is what makes this perfect, it is not complex, however what you get in return far exceeds the investment. A great use of the space that you have. Great series you are putting up. Plus nice touch the colour coding of the tool boxes.

If the ends of the leafs slide apart during use I'd suggest some sort of locking mechanism to hold them together. I plan to build this and I have the cheaper plastic horses and I think I might have an issue with them not staying put when pressure is applied.

This is a well thought out and designed organizer and work bench. I appreciate that you continue to offer videos that guys with regular tools can completed. Most of the makers on RUclips have shops and tools that we normal guys can never hope to have. $30,000 to $50,000 shops are not in the cards for most of us 'weekend warriors' out there. Thanks for this video.

My only suggestion would be the legs! They seemed a little unstable! I would reinforce them or maybe screw the whole bench to the back wall! Hate to see you weigh it all down and then fall on you!

    Great work Mike, looks awesome.
Whenever I build something like this I use T-nuts and a threaded chair foot to create an adjustable base where the wood meets the floor. Functional, and (I've been told) they look awesome too, turns the 2x wood stock into actual functional furniture. Helps isolate the end grain from the concrete too, which over time is sub-optimal.

I’d add a security latch to the lip end in case the boards wanna move around. And looking at the saw horses look bulky compared to the tabletops, maybe consider folding drop down legs built in to the table leafs. But I love the concept and versatility on it. Love all your modern builds hehe.

This was great. I would just add one enhancement. For the 2x4 that makes the lip for the extensions to rest on I would have drilled holes all the way across at the right distances to match the width of the extensions. Then drilled a similar hole under the ends of the sides of the extension then I could throw two pegs a little taller than the holes so they would stick up (most likely made of metal) so they would go into the holes on the extension where I want it to rest. This would keep it from slipping off the lip.

What kind of a connector could you put on those removable tables?... I thought, what if there were some type of open hinge, like hookish that then would fit over a metal bar set 1/2 inch away from the bench, that way they hook over that and fold down on the saw horses, can be put away when needed and wouldn't be disconnected when you sat on them. Just a thought. Other than that, I wish I could put this in my car port. I'd have to enclose and lock everything. Bang up job, Mike!
