MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further. - Хобби
This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!
Replace the edge of the table with a French Cleat. If you have a table saw available. Great video.
True. It may slip. Safety first.
French Cleats will definitely be a good safety upgrade. They're easy enough to make with a circular saw as well.
Awesome build! Really appreciate the limited tool usage, too. Living in a small apartment in the city I have limited space and limited tools. So I'm always looking for some "low effort, low maintenance" projects to do. And this is definitely something to get inspiration from: I could very well imagine a build like this with smaller dimensions and without the electrics for a small balcony or so. That's the kind of content I subscribed to this channel for! :)
I was excited to hear you were making a compact version of your previous workbench on the podcast. This turned out great! Will definitely need to takes notes as I will be re-working the bench in my basement at some point (the previous owner made a really good bench, but it's covered in mounds of...something and wall organization was a board with seemingly random nails).
The simplicity of tools and materials is what makes this perfect, it is not complex, however what you get in return far exceeds the investment. A great use of the space that you have. Great series you are putting up. Plus nice touch the colour coding of the tool boxes.
If the ends of the leafs slide apart during use I'd suggest some sort of locking mechanism to hold them together. I plan to build this and I have the cheaper plastic horses and I think I might have an issue with them not staying put when pressure is applied.
Absolutely love the ability to expand when needed using the leaves with the saw horses. Great video!
You forgot the cable clamps on the knockout of the electrical box
When would the tour release?
I promise I'll try! I's just perfect for my tools, sewing machine, storing fabrics and also a space for the computer (not all at once of course). Just awesome!
I really appreciated the pop ups that showed tools and measurements as you went along! Super helpful for this visual learner
That hack for electrical outlet is worth the admission. And the admission is $Free.99. Took me a solid month to build the DYI Garage Storage / Workbench version 1; and now I can add the outlet and outfeed table extension. Awesome !!!
This is a well thought out and designed organizer and work bench. I appreciate that you continue to offer videos that guys with regular tools can completed. Most of the makers on RUclips have shops and tools that we normal guys can never hope to have. $30,000 to $50,000 shops are not in the cards for most of us 'weekend warriors' out there. Thanks for this video.
My only suggestion would be the legs! They seemed a little unstable! I would reinforce them or maybe screw the whole bench to the back wall! Hate to see you weigh it all down and then fall on you!
Yeah I’m with Keith on this one.
same same. shelves are over built like crazy and then you have long skinny legs.
knee braces
Yep. Should just double them up to be 4x4
Word! I ended up screwing it to the wall, should’ve shown it 🤙🏼
Para mim, o melhor projeto até agora! Congrats Mike!
I'm with Stephen Greco with the props and the french cleat idea. looking good!
Wow, you represent yourself and your sponsor professionally & enthusiastically. Your generosity through free downloadable designs is rarely seen. I'm going to take your enthusiasm and build this garage shelf. Thank you. Aaron
I like the idea of the extra edge to use with a saw-horse for extra area for work bench space to work on projects.
Great toolwall and bench extensions! Secure that wire in the electrical box. Fasten the whole thing to the wall. It's going to be such an asset in supporting your house remodel. Also, add it to the shed playlist!
I have the saw horses... They coating flaked pretty quick and they're rusty now.. Sand blast and powder coat coming up.😊
Incrível. Dá pra organizar muita coisa. 👏👏👏👏👏
I swear man, your filming has gotten so crafty. I'm taking some real pointers from your videos!!
Great work Mike, looks awesome.
Whenever I build something like this I use T-nuts and a threaded chair foot to create an adjustable base where the wood meets the floor. Functional, and (I've been told) they look awesome too, turns the 2x wood stock into actual functional furniture. Helps isolate the end grain from the concrete too, which over time is sub-optimal.
Could you share links to parts?
Been looking for months to find even just 1 plan I like for my new shop build... I think I found it!!! Thank YOU so very much! Now I'm gonna look at that garage storage video! 👍😉
I’d add a security latch to the lip end in case the boards wanna move around. And looking at the saw horses look bulky compared to the tabletops, maybe consider folding drop down legs built in to the table leafs. But I love the concept and versatility on it. Love all your modern builds hehe.
Tomorrow is my exam just to refresh my mind I'm watching your video ❤😄
THIS IS DOPE! The expansion table is an absolute game changer!
Great idea. One suggestion. could be better if you did a french cleat to lock the leaves in on the workbench side. This way they don't slip forward. Nice build!
and if you have the French cleat across the entire front of the bench against the wall, you could attach small holders like for screws where the workbench leafs don't attach.
@@ocelliwoodworks7272 that’s what I’m saying
Cool build mike. One pointer please use a box connector for those cords. They ones for Romex and that extention cord. Cuz the metal box can nick the wires and be a fire hazard.
Digging this build. This is exactly what I was looking for Dr.
This looks like a good weekend project, really looking forward to the plans being available.
Great build Mike & I like the fact that it's all modular and can be changed whenever you please! 👍😉
I was just designing a work station just like this can't wait to build it.
Very versatile! I like the temporary expandability.
Your series about building your work shop is truly great viewing. Thank you
Thanks for the clean and efficient design. Will appreciate an update when you reinforce it to prevent racking and tipping.
You forgot CABLE CLAMPS on both electric boxes. Metal boxes can cut through wires causing shorts and FIRE!
Good to know! Thanks 🤙🏼
Ah, the modularity! 🤩
YES! This is exactly what I was needing for my garage!
I like this plan. Maybe add some spinners between the front & back legs at the floor level, also secure to wall.
Excellent idea to make the leaves fit on top of saw horses. That looks like a great addition to my planned table :)
Thanks, great build. I just moved into a new space and this will work brilliantly.
Your leaf idea is awesome! building something this weekend and I will be working that into the design with some type of French cleat and latch so I don't need to worry about it falling during a cut. thanks for the idea!!!
Thanks for this another versatile and great functionality compact storage video. I did one the same concept as yours from your prev videos you showed here. Superb!! Keep at the great work!
The part about feeling empowered by a couple successful electrical projects is on point. I installed a ceiling fan in our bedroom and I feel like I'm a full blown electrician
Perfect solution for my tiny garage. Thanks
I like this build but don't see the plan for this workbench in the link.
Great Video! We have a RUclips channel in Germany with learning videos that I watched over and over again at school that uses the same music as you do in this video. That's why I was thinking the whole time when you would finally explain a complicated physics formula 😅😅
LOVE that shop! Love the white and blue. 😍
This sounds just about right for me. I think I shall download those plans. Thanks Mike!
Good timing, I've just finished building a new workshop.
Nice, love the extension leaves!
I couldn’t visualize what you were talking about on the podcast but I get it now and I dig it. Nice!
"leafs" also know has "leaves" lol! love ya Mike! Love this project. So dope.
This looks awesome! Hopefully, our new house will have a garage to put something like this in for me.
SUPER PRO, I love it, all the wiring layouts etc. Great job
Love it! all i need now is a larger room to build something similar
Loving it!!!! Thank you for another great upload!
Functional and looks so 🔥 too! You killed it!
Nice clean design. The extensions are a brilliant add.
Awesome and extremely versatile work bench..!!!
youre hype just puts a smile on my face! great stuff yeaaa
I'm been watching you since your bus renovation. You inspired me to design things.I what you to keep making videos.
I’ve been looking to build something exactly like this!!
Awesome project. Inspirational stuff.
absolutely love this; just might try my hand at it
I did my giant pegboard in French blue. Great minds think alike!
Mike killing it as per usual! Love your stuff!
I like that expanding concept. Very cool. 🔥🇿🇦
Def building this one, Mike!
This is an excellent video. Nice work Mike and thank you for the time and effort to share this.
Thank you for your videos!!!!
I did both😉
Favorite video so far!!
Awesome work! Thank you, your videos are very helpful. I hope in the future you build a "smaller" shed.
Love it.
Real nice build and so versatile!
been watching 4 a time now plan to do some of your projects watching you is a joy!!
Brilliant build. One of your best yet!!
Great idea. I'd beef up the legs a little bit so it won't break, but its great overall
FINALLY!!! BEEN WAITING FOR MONTHS, LOVE THIS KIND OF VIDS ❤️🥵🥵
Great vid!!!! Definitely plan to build this for my garage
This was great. I would just add one enhancement. For the 2x4 that makes the lip for the extensions to rest on I would have drilled holes all the way across at the right distances to match the width of the extensions. Then drilled a similar hole under the ends of the sides of the extension then I could throw two pegs a little taller than the holes so they would stick up (most likely made of metal) so they would go into the holes on the extension where I want it to rest. This would keep it from slipping off the lip.
Love ❤ this!!
It seems to easy! Amazing!
This man is amazing, I wish I was this talented
Thanks. Interesting project.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing!
finally more Mike content
Great job! Love the build!
I love watching his videos and this other dude DualEx
Awesome!
Mike what a great project, the on-screen graphic are killer too! #1800-super-pro!
Great design!!!!
This is sick definitely using some of these ideas in my garage build out
Omg this looks awesome, havent even watched yet lol
What kind of a connector could you put on those removable tables?... I thought, what if there were some type of open hinge, like hookish that then would fit over a metal bar set 1/2 inch away from the bench, that way they hook over that and fold down on the saw horses, can be put away when needed and wouldn't be disconnected when you sat on them. Just a thought. Other than that, I wish I could put this in my car port. I'd have to enclose and lock everything. Bang up job, Mike!
With you i lern about diy proyects and english too becuse i am from México, thanks
Wow, wow impressive
Loving it
