This week I'm taking care of the storage problem in my garage. I need to make more room for my office, and decided to build an enclosed / dust free space to store the odds and ends that get in the way.

I like how you show those honest moments of a project (you putting together shelves) where you try something out, then realize there’s a more efficient way of doing something. My favorite part of projects!
Pro tip on the hanging storage:. Keep an eye out for suit bags and drycleaning bags on the free stuff listings. The shoulders of anything hanging for more than three months or so will get surprisingly filthy, even in a closet with a door.
I usually put black trash bags over camping gear that hangs or things like life vests. Just cut a hole for the hanger top to go through. Seems like this stuff does get dirty even in a closed room.
And if you don’t mind the fragrance, you can get febreeze scented trash bags meant to deal with trash odor that will help to keep your gear from smelling musty in the plastic.

@@krizkatz1574 You are welcome. And if you can’t find the scented ones or over time the the effect fades; put a dryer sheet in the bottom of the bag. That’s a hack for storing suitcases as well: drop a dryer sheet in them before you zip them up and store them. Keeps them from getting musty too.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the low door knob 😂 should’ve cut the door in a way to keep the door knob normal height.
It probably would have meant a lot more work too. I thought the knob height was strange. Instead of cutting off the bottom of the door, he'd have to remove the top of the frame, cut that down the amount needed and then the door too. Because the pre-mortised latch and door knob already there, you can't really move the door knob up or you'd have the ugly old hole and need the new one.
An inch or two is probably ok, but 6", just too low.
The door is upside down :) thats why the knob is low, probably a cheap right swing door and he wanted a left swing door :D
@@knasleradden I was wondering that too, but it looked like it was cut down. Not a full height door.
@@WoodUCreate agreed. For me, it would bother the shit out of me. I’d rather have no door knob than a door knob at the wrong height lol.
@@knasleradden not upside down because the handle would be higher than the second hinge and the latch mortise in the frame wouldn’t line up
Man thank you for explaining general concepts like shear strength vs compressive strength. Those basics (which us non craftsman are not familiar with) are super useful concepts to define and put examples with. 🙂
What a great build! I love the thought that went in to planning based on existing bins and storage requirements.
I loved this for sooo many reasons but in short… its practical … has purpose..you painted the door, everything has a home and you even labelled your boxes.👏🏻👏🏻 🙋🏻♀️🇬🇧💕
Your tip on structural screws is greatly appreciated. I love the design of the storage room; including a closet was an excellent idea. Adding a line of hooks in the wall of the closet (half way high) will provide a way to hang bags, bets, etc. without taking much space. Great use of the space! I’m not sure about the lights … they just look provisional.
I need this exact storage solution for all my old tools and gear. Perfect use of space. Thanks for taking the time to share.
You can only own as much as you can organize, otherwise things you go to look for will be lost in the mess making it like you never owned them in the first place, good job!

Few quick things for anyone attempting something similar.
1: there are double 2X6, 2X8, etc joist hangers, so you don’t need to get one for a 4X4 and shim it.
2: most joists are not milled very accurately, so while it is convenient to just nail all the hangers on and then drop the joists in, you will very likely wind up with the top surface of the joists not being coplanar due to the inconsistencies in width.
3: it is a good idea to use pressure treated wood or a gasket for anything that is in contact with concrete, as concrete tends to be a source of moisture for wood.
Oh, I should add that you did a great job and I’m very jealous of your dust free storage area.

@@bs838 install the hangers on the joist you are hanging first and then attach to your beam, will allow you to ensure they are flush at the top

watching you assemble the shelves is pure comedy. i do not film myself but now i see what i look like working solo. i actually use spring clamps or any other style and clamp them where the bottom of the shelf will be, holds everything in place while i attach. another great vid! thanks

Great video and even better build. Tip from some stuff I learned while drywalling, Never let your drywall boards sit on the concrete slab floor as they will soak up moisture always try to leave like 1/4 inch gap or so using a pry bar to help pry it up while hanging works great! Love the videos man keep up the great work.
I like to throw a couple plastic horseshoe shims down for this same reason. It'll keep it at a consistent height off the ground and it's so freaking easy

So I've been watching a lot of video's on people who are building area's to solve space issues. I have to say I really like how you turned that space around. I would watch more video's right now, but considering how late it is I'll have to save watching those video's for my lunch hours in the days to come. You got a new sub Michael.
Great job Mike. Keep it up. Just on a side note for hanger joist there are specific nails that are used. They are a little smaller in length but are stubbier. Although for the load you have in that room you dont even need them i think. Superb content. Thank you

It sounds like that room you were in at the end (with the Glowforge) has a feedback tone of 564 Hz. I don't know why I felt you needed to know, but here we are.

Well April 16th at 3:15 Am we woke to a smoke alarm well needless to say we lost everything we owned TG we got out in time and got our four legged babies out safely I loved your build
Wow this was a fun video to watch. I am a beginner "wood worker" which is an OVER STATEMENT lol... but my 6 yr old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this project!
I also live in the greater Seattle area and suffer from all the tree pollen. I can't cut lumber without a face mask, even outdoors. I love your shelf design. I might steal it. I've been considering building a similar storage room at the back of my 2 car garage to separate my woodworking shop from all our other tools. Then I can add storage to the other side of the wall for woodworking tools. I wish I had that much ceiling height in my garage. Also, wetting drywall tape can cause it to bubble later down the road. Mix water in the mud instead.

I would like to acknowledge the fact that there are no missed wall studs, no multiple holes in line of each other. props to you sir.
With the Glowforge, maybe expand on the patterned plywood by engraving 'impossible' plywood patterns into pieces that can go between other patterned pieces. Must be something there (and not just in my head!)

Is that me or the door knob is at knee height? You could have saved plywood on the shelves for the plastic containers, the containers have a solid bottom, they could lay on a couple of 2x2.
I was also wondering about the doorknob.

It’s very flexible to have a room made of wood and very nice to have access to inexpensive 2x4s. I can’t even imagine what this would cost to build here in Italy where 2x4s are not readily available because everything is made of bricks and cement…

Great video! Carpentry is super zen to watch and I loooove organizing. I constantly optimize my small hand tool woodworking shop so i can fit electronics and even sowing and leatherwork in there too. Good thing it's only a hobby, I wouldn't make a living from just reorganizing my own workshop 😄

with the floor stud, after drilling into the concrete a sliver of wood and then a penny nail driven in with the head sticking up so that it is easy to remove if you need to disassemble.
I do like the idea of dedicated bins for specific tasks, plumbing, electrical etc, gonna steal this solution
This is incredible. As someone who has never built anything like this by hand but would like to, seeing this is motivating and inspiriting but at the same time feels daunting. I'm new to your videos and will definitely be checking out more but I'm wondering do you have any videos where you explain your process for designing? Seems like you have to be able to plan way ahead to make sure everything gets cut and sized right!
I think that my biggest hang-up with wanting to get into projects like this is the lack of tools that you see these people use.
Just some math and practice
As someone who got into this 3 years ago and late in life, I'd recommend a good tape measure and graphing paper to plan out your designs. Like Adisson commented- math and practice will get you there. The tricky thing about lumber is a 2x4 isn't 2 inches by 4 inches. It's 1.5"x3.5". A 2x6 is 1.5"x5.5", but a 2x8 is 1.5"x7.25". Do a search for dimensional lumber size charts and that will help with designing and making the proper cuts. And as they say- measure twice, cut once.

Nice storage space, Michael. I feel your pain on the cost of plywood. I have a few sheets of 5x5x1/2 baltic birch that I paid $35 for a couple of years ago and now they are $100.

So I've never watched your channel before, but I just wanted to say I immediately subscribed upon seeing your art, it's amazing!
Tip on fastening the bottom plate to concrete. If you drill a hole the same size as the nail you want to use then place a piece of tie wire in the hole ( it can be longer than the nail it doesn’t matter) then hammer the nail in. It’s crazy strong. Try it

Hey Michael, I love your channel and the attention to detail you put into your work -- really impressive. And this is sort of unrelated to the video (sort of) but I was hoping one day you could do video on calibrating and 0'ing in the dewalt jobsite table saw. I have the same one and having major issues with it pulling away from the fence and having trouble finding help on it. Idk how many people have issues with this or maybe other common problems with tools (and dont have the know-how to fix them) but just a thought. Either way, keep up the great work and keep the content coming.
I am envious and now inspired. But I get you, doing the project is more chaos on top of chaos and when it’s done, then you have the space that would have been helpful for the project. I need to create a cohesive storage and workroom. Thinking about the 2 tiered storage and how I could create. Top deck for Xmas tree, deck umbrella, and other seasonal long awkward items that always fall over.

@Michael, I have found that using my impact driver to drive the tap-con screws into concrete has been more reliable. I agree they can be tempermental with just a screw-driver
