Your video editing blows your competition out of the water. Really great stuff.
Thank you
Nine years later, and this video is still as relevant as ever! Fantastic editing, by the way.
It never ceases to amaze me that when I watch a video of things I already know how much little tips and tricks are brought back to the fore front of my mind. Thanks for jarring the ol' memory box....needed that.
Great design, these shelves are certainly in my future. The video editing is excellent as well. Thank you for taking the time to remove the boring awkward crap and keep us entertained at the same time :)
i want to thank you. i just got done doing this after watching your video. love what i did and less crap on the floor and the wife is happy and can walk in there now.
this is my wife's goal for me too.
Good job!
This video helped me make my first storage shelf!!! I just finished it and man I got a lot of space in my garage now! Thanks!!!
I envy you all that space, if I stood on the ladders first step I would bang my head on the roof! You've got a beautiful place there mate 👍🏼😊
I'm amazed at the editing skills on this video!

That was funny to see
so badass editing skills makes you look super human
Your videos keep getting better and better. I love the Sketch Up overlay effect that you and Frank do. Good story telling!
you can teach a few things to other youtubers when it comes to editing, love it
LOL Love the "close enough" measuring.
I'm a city boy who just bought his first house. Yeah, feeling like a real adult now haha.
Cool video, helps me learn how I can turn my house into my castle
What? No load testing? After your miter station drawer test, I was waiting to see you lie across the shelves. I like how you used 2x2's vs 2x4's. It reduces weight and bulk keeping the look minimalistic.
Great project Jay. Great use of space and not very expensive. I loved the effect at 3:51!
Mighty fine job young man.
I am impressed, a guard over the circular saw!
+Bryn Noble no goggles though...He looks like too great an asset to his family to be losing his eyesight.
I need to do this above my garage door, I use close enough measuring all the time. Love the new saw stop, jealous of all that rip capacity!
I love to see efficient use of space. I think you need to put some led strip lights on that inside edge for some Kyle Toth inspired shop parties.
Great idea Jay, and very effective as well.
Cheers
Mike
Mike Waldt Thanks, Mike. I appreciate it. It has already come in handy.
my goal is to be a grown up and have a shop as nice as yours
okay, first of all I have tried to do what you did measuring the board and I have to say your really strong to hold up that board on one end and measure it! Because I know how heavy it is and great video! Thanks for sharing!
Great video sir. I LOVE your Red Wings drawer pulls. :)
I built these shelves in my garage except I modified the design to have 2 shelves on one wall and 3 shelves on another wall. Regardless of the number of shelves you build, I would HIGHLY recommend using 4" wood lag bolts to secure the 2x2 to the ceiling. Wood screws will just pull out with the weight. Also, rather than using 2x2's to strap to the ceiling, I used 2x4's to beef it up a bit
I'm looking at doing this and that's my big concern, making sure it will not come down unexpectedly.
Commercial overhead storage kits use things like angle iron for the supports, with long lag screws to secure to the ceiling joists. The load limit is mostly from the ceiling joists, stated to be about 600 lbs for the heavy duty units. If the use of lumber is a worry, maybe use safety cable as backup just in case it somehow lets go, holding it up long enough to clear the area.
year steel wound cable is tough you can rawlbolt and lag bolt it to the ceiling and use caribiners for clips
thanks for the video, but I think I was more impressed with your crazy editing skills!! great job on both!!!
nice shop too! but the LIONS blow!
I'll have to agree with you. His got all the equipment plus the editing skills. I have neither.
Great video, very well done!
Jay, you need to make a ladder rack where you don't need to get on a ladder to get the ladder. :)
Me before watching video: These are so simple and elegant. I can do this! Me after watching video: Oh, you need tools nvm. 3:47
Love the Red Wings drawer "handles"
Are you concerned about the plywood bowing because of the width w no supports?
G23 3/4 plywood is super sturdy
Great video!!! I’m planning on doing a similar job in my garage this week. How far apart would you recommend putting the vertical 2x4’s? Any special hardware to attach the 2x2 to the wall and ceiling? What thickness was the plywood you used? Thanks a lot!!!
Great questions, but hardly anyone seems to get answers.
Great video Jason! Question - what software/app are you using to edit your videos? I love the chunky effect!
I agree I like the editing and shelving , what program or app did you use.
Still hoping to get the software/app?

How to build bathroom cab
wow look at that high ceiling. i can't do this project. :(
ok
lostintime86 same here. I can't have ceiling space that's easily accessible unless I'm 11' tall....
nice work, not only on the shelves, but on the video as well!
Just a note to say thank you for the inspiration and idea for the raised garage shelves. I tackled this project today (with some minor issues thanks to a combination of mathematics and my lack of carpentry skills). Although MY framing came out kind of janky, it's solid and will do the job. I'll finally be able to clear the garage floor and get rid of the ground shelves. I'm now subscribed to you and April Wilkerson ... I admire both of your skills, ideas and creativity. A big thank you from the mountains of western Maryland.
Hey there eh, how did the shelf hold up?
Im thinking of building one, just concerned about how much it could roughly hold in weight
I have built these shelves for my garage and also for friends. They are such a fantastic design, cheap and easy to build. I can also look at them all day long. Good job!
I like the way you do your vids dude! No fluff or unnecessary complications and some cool time saving editing to move it along. Thanks man! Much appreciated.
This video production is outstanding from video editing to your high standard. Really enjoyed your method to build from one person
Jay, huge fan of everything you put out, but this has changed my life 😂
Thanks so much for taking the time to record even the most basic projects.
Appreciate ya!
Rick Andreotta
Thank you very much for the feedback.
Thanks for showing everything from start to finish.
Thanks Jay..as a fellow Michiganian..you have given me many new ideas..
this fella must be a film school graduate as well as a very handy guy. XLNT vid ! I've done these type projects for 50+ years and I've not seen a better presentation/instruction ever. Good Job !
Your measuring technique is flawless!
loved the drilling scene, getting faster and faster. New saw looks sweet.
o bez Thanks bez. I appreciate it.
Jay Bates mate your videos are quality. i always look forward a new one.
Thank you @crafted workshop and @Jay Bates for your videos. You both have made it simpler than getting something from Ikea and assembling. I have ended up creating 2 of these in my garage and plan to creat 1 more very soon!
Those Redwing handles on all those drawers are pretty sweet. But the shelves were great! Theres nothing better than putting wasted space to good use! Awesome video with very good editing!
I wish my garage had high enough ceilings to allow for this storage. My next garage will be more shop friendly. I appreciate all your videos, keep it up Jay.
Excellent mix of instruction and visual - great video technique - very efficient use of the viewer time while offering solid information. Many thanks!
One of the best shot and edited woodworking channels out there!
Fast practical & perfect ; video with easy steps instructions & demo, love your workmanship style 👍
Thanks, great video- all the hi-points without boring fill. Two thumbs up!
nice... best of all the video's on garage shelves
Great video for doing your garage shelves without a helper. Very smart and creative.
Jay, this inspired me so I built my own shelves off this design and it worked out great. Although in my case it wasn't as easy as it looks in the video and took me three weekends to complete. The first two and a half of those three weekends were cleaning out the garage enough to get the ladder up next to the wall. After that it got easier, though. By the time I got the shelves up I didn't need them as urgently as before I started, so I stopped at one wall and have a sheet of plywood and some 2x stock left over. It'll make a good start on a miter station. Best of all, I think my wife is even happier with the result than I am.
This is EXACTLY what I’m looking for. I’m doing it this weekend.
Thank you so much for making this. It is awesome how you've put it together and most importantly how concise you described everything!
Truly,
Thanks buddy!
Thank you for the video! I watched it over and over while doing an 8ft section in my small garage.
+cannonbird47 Nice, hope it is a great addition for you.
Storage is definitely one of the biggest issues in my garage. Great video
Those Red Wings drawer handles are really cool - excellent job
Thanks to your last video, I put a shelf just like this in my garage. Turned out great!!
Thanks. This is the video I will use for my project. It's been the easiest to understand. The video edit in the beginning really helped me wrap my mind around what I was going to do. Thanks for making projects like this doable for the average jo.
So far this has been my favorite custom storage shelving. Definitely like the idea above the garage door
Is it just me or does it seem you guys just moved in there and it was an emplty room. Hard to believe how time flies. Look how far your shop has come. Looking great Jay. As always.
You work smart and your built in for the chop saw is brilliant! Awesome vid... Thank you!
Dude you are brilliant. You really know how to make the most of useable space.
That was one of the best videos I have seen. The only problem is that you have fancy equipment that most of us don't have. Great idea, great presentation, thank you!!!
Nice use of the free Space above. Awesome project and really well done.
Looks like it's quite hot right now in your side of the planet. Time to enjoy a drink on the terrasse with the dogs. I hope his bite it healed now.
Lamialle Gerald Thank you Lamialle. It's quite warm already but not fully into summer yet. Skeeter's bit has healed back to normal. Thanks for following up.
Jay Bates You're welcome ! I love dogs, I hate snakes, so...
Not summer yet here neither, only 28°C. After the mosson, it will be close to 40°C with 90% of humidity. A real pain for people like me, woodworking outside, without an airconditionner. But, hey, that's part of the fun !
Have a great week, looking forward to see your next vid on the vlog. Best regards to Mrs.Bates.
Thanks Mr Bates. Very good for a newby.
Thanks Jay. Just saw your video and finished my shelves this weekend. Went so easily following your advice.
Jay
Thanks for an easy and practical way to make more space in my garage. Spent the day using the design you posted on your videos, and it came out great!.
Michael A Very awesome. I like to hear that.
Really nice design. Simple and cheap to make. Thanks!
Built it! Much appreciated. I love showing it off...oh and getting stuff off the ground and into otherwise wasted space :)
Looked like a fun build.
Video well done. It was enjoyable to watch.......not a lot of wasted time rambling on and on over something obvious or watching repeated steps.
Thanks for posting
Very cool Jay. Really like the simplistic design. It won't be long till its full!
I bow to your editing prowess.
Editing skills and carpentry skill both on point 👍🏼👍🏼
Jay, I must be watching old vids.... I've been watching a long time and have completed - or tried many of your projects. Your editing skills have gotten so awesome! Thanks for the vid. Going to be doing this in my new garage.
you make that look wayyy to easy, plus, you have all the right tools !
So simple and so handy. Thanks for this video. You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs.
Thank you very much, Ron.
I'm getting ready to make this on Thursday! Thanks for the inspiration!!!
"Close-enough" and "sort-of-accurate" are some of my favorite measuring techniques for quickie projects. Great video work and the tiny gems of humor really make the entire experience a lot of fun. Your editing in and of itself highlights the projects, too.Bravo!👍🏼
To be cramped makes you clever ! Well done Jay.
have seen a lot of these videos on the same concept but mind was blown when i saw you use the scraps to hold up the bottom 2x2 .. good stuff
That is another great idea for storage. You have made an amazing shop out of that garage. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant... Frakking brilliant. Just what I needed. THANKS!
There are a lot of similar tutorial videos to be found, but this is easily the cleanest and burliest (yet, not over-engineered) design I’ve encountered. Also, the scrap 2x2 “helpers” are brilliant!
You have a really great set up and your shelves are excellent; You really made good use of your space; Gave me a whole new perspective of utilizing space in our garage!
I never even gave it a thought to do this over the garage door! My wife and I have an attached single stall garage- space is a premium. Right now I am fixing all the drywall joints (bad taping job by previous homeowner) and get it a new coat of white paint....I am doing this!
Ironically, bad taping jobs are VERY useful...they let you easily see where they joists and studs are.
Yes, I've been using that to full advantage, haha.
Simple to follow tutorial. Great work. Did my single car garage, maximising wasted space indeed.
I love the way you edit your video. Very entertaining.
I like your wasted space in the garage shelves. Thank you for the idea!
I watch a lot of DIY videos and this one (first I've seen of yours) is by far the best ever... great graphics, great editing, simple design, easy to see how it is done without wasting a lot of time. Thank you!
This is a great site! The drawings of the purposed project, and the fast action are great! Good job . . . i'll be back to look at other videos.
Dude has probably saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you sir!
I've watched your videos for a while now and you've definitely inspired me to get more into woodworking. Thanks for the help and keep doing what you are doing. You have one of the best channels out there.
nice and good DIY videos. Many small but good ideas when working alone..
Nice work Jay. I did the same thing in my garage but I used chains hanging from eye bolts screwed into my rafters rather than the 2X4 hangers.
Jimbob, email me. I have someone that would like to talk to you... Zoe :) ashleyspells@gmail.com
I am going to do this in my garage to free up wall and floor space. Great job every week on your videos!
Very nice and instructive job ! I always watch US vids because there are not a lot of DIY videos in French. Thanks
Excellent how-to video, thank you. Just completed the same shelving myself no sweat.
