I dont immediately need the storage space but I know as life goes on we all tend to accumulate junk so this will be a good start for storage.

Dude you're the only one so far that actually had a useful video on building these..thanks
6 years later and you look the same again!!! Congrats on all of your success so far. Plenty more to go for you I'm sure. I've been following for about 2 years now and have learned quite a bit from you. Thank you for sharing your journey!
just did this on 12 ft ceilings (that had 8 ft shelf underneath) and it turned out peachy... cept I painted it all navy gray😁.
Many thanks Sir, you have a gift for educating the willing.
I haven't done it yet but when you and one of your fans were talking about it, I thought it would work for me also, it will, just haven't done it yet. Thank Jay for the video on how to install over head storage by your self. Great job.
Thank you Jay for the excellent idea, I was contemplating buying a garage storage unit from Costco but your design works great and cheaper than $222.00. I would recommend to others to use lag screws to attach to the ceiling to add strength.
An oldie but a goodie. Watched this forever ago, but going to work on doing something similar in our new garage. Thanks as always.
That's a great idea. I have been wondering what I could do with the ledge above our garage door and this makes the best use of it. Thanks for the idea!
I've not really done woodworking before. this was a great first project. you made it look easy, and it was. looking forward to some of your other newbie projects. I forgot I had a garage. Thanks very much.
Great stuff, Jay. It's such a great feeling to be working in your own garage. Congratulations on the house and all the best to you!
Probably the best garage overhead storage vid on the tube. Thanks man
This is exactly what I need for my garage - thanks for sharing Jay.
Matt Walch You're very welcome Matt. Glad you found it useful.
Thanks again Jay Bates I just got around to building this. Worked out amazing and going to build more. Happy I had the riving knife to rip the 2x4. Pinched when cutting. Used a spacer to measure off the wall as well which was easier for me. Perfect project for those w/o big tools though. Handsaw and drill! I used 2'x4' sheets of plywood so didn't have to cut them
Looks like your shop is coming together.
I am looking forward to future videos.
Great video. I'm planning on starting this project soon. I think I will be substituting lag bolts for the screws. Thanks
Thank you- I was looking for a simple design for that exact spot. I have a tiny one car garage.
Hi Jay, I have started building the Overhead Garage Storage Shelves in my garage. I built a 4 ft one above the door to the basement and found that the cleat attached to the ceiling got in the way when I put stuff up there. So on the ones down the rest of the side of the garage I put the cleat on the outside of the shelf brace. This seems to be working better.
Thank you for all your inspirations.
Love this idea.. going to build this next weekend. I'm always excited to crack open your newsletter on Monday morning's to see your latest videos. Keep up the great work Jay!
Those are some neat shelves for storing wood. Well done!
Great idea. I may incorporate that with storage space in my attic & my shop. Great job
Great storage idea Jay, it looks like things are coming together in the new shop really well.....very cool.
it's nice to have such vertical clearance above your garage door. I have about a foot space. But I used it as a lumber rack. My wife hasn't let me have the entire garage yet. :)
i love videos that are less talk and to the point. Please keep it coming! Thanks.
Shops looking good Jay
Thanks Carl.
Hey Jay. great video and thanks for all the cool shop ideas. Not sure if this was mentioned previously however a good tip for working on a ladder in this area is to DISCONNECT/disable the garage door opener to prevent a family member from opening the garage knocking you off the ladder by accident. This tip is from a close call experience I had while building a tire rack above the door. luckily no one was hurt but I did need to change my shorts after. lol
Nice guest bedroom you built there. I'm at a similar stage to you in that I've grown tired of my one-circuit basic garage space. I just caught up on the electrical and now you go and fill another one of my Saturdays with a no-bogus above-door storage space on the cheap. Keep up the good build, and I'm a huge fan of your approach to projects and Sketchup tutorials.
Thanks Man. Much appreciated.
Nice storage space. Somehow you always find "stuff" to fill that space up. It's always good to have any extra storage possible.
thanks for taking the time and share your ideas
New shop is looking good. I like all the new Ryobi gear !
man wish I saw this about 3 days ago, I just ended up making standard shelving for the garage. now I know what to do next time. thanks. miss your cool tunes
I've been looking for some storage solutions for over my garage door. I am definitely going to do this. Thank you so much. It's funny how when you buy a house, a lot of the projects shift toward things you need for your home. When you own a home, you never run out of projects.
Joshua Luther I'm beginning to find that out! Thanks for watching Joshua.
Hey jay, Thanks for the storage idea. But how much wight do you think you can add to your shelves for long term storage with out causing problems with your ceiling joists?
Very well done!!! Got so many great ideas. I need to do this in my garage!! I know this video is way old, but just know it helped me bigtime!!
Yours is the Best Over the garage door Shelf video I've seen!!! also your Garage is very Organized 👍
had the same Idea this morning might doing the same next time I'm just a bit afraid about how much load you can put on it
Up high, out of the way, and plenty deep. Stealing this idea. Thanks bro
Ok, enough already! Another great idea. My only gripe is that you have convinced me to add some more shelving to my garage workshop. No, just kidding. I really appreciate your effort and willingness to share ideas. Keep up the great work!
Appreciate the videos, Jay. Nice to see the shop taking shape.
Robert Mazzitelli Thank you Robert.
Wow the shop is coming along great! Congrats!
Seven McKibben Thank you! Much appreciated.
Excellent... It's great to see your shop coming on... Cheers...
Adam Quincey Thank you Adam.
Love watching your videos, always practical. I to have a Garage workshop. Thanks Jay for your time and investment.
Dev Ogle Thanks Dev. I appreciate it.
very cool, I have always loved storage idea vids. the go pro looks pretty good too!
Nick Ferry Thanks Nick. I'm pretty impressed with the video quality of the gopro. Sometimes I wish it wasn't such a wide angle but then again that's one of the reasons I purchased it.
Jay Bates I know some editing software has plugins to remove the "fisheye" if ever you want just a B camera w/o it - but I really like the look of the wide angle, I feel it tells more of a "this is the whole picture" type story.
Nice job! simple, easy, and it looks good.
Honestly loved the no commentary on this one. Really helpful and will be building tomorrow!
Great idea! I've been thinking of building some sort of storage in my garage/shop for my wife's storage bins that is out of my way. This is perfect. Thanks for the inspiration.
Looking good jay. The shop is coming along nicely.
Aron Waters Thanks!
Well done. Great place for storage.
Donnie G Thanks Donnie. I appreciate it. Hopefully I don't fill it up too soon.
Nice work, and nice shop, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this I was looking to design a garage shelving above the door...Now I don't have to...good timing
Shop is looking really great Jay. Loved the camera angles you had in this video, benefits of the gopro? See you got your self a new riding mower, fun fun!
***** I couldn't take mowing an acre with a 20" push mower anymore. I'll definitely take the wuss card on that one. I like the GoPro. This video would have been much much harder to make with my main camera.
Not a wuss thing Jay Bates it's a time thing! Glad your settling into your house just fine.
For those that are looking for a place to store long items, I did the same thing in my old garage, only I pulled it way out to 8 ft and was able to store sheet goods on one side and 8ft long lumber. I learned real fast that laying sheet goods flat was not the best idea I ever had, but at least it got it up off the floor
Great job Jay: Cheers Harry
What a nice Garage storage shelves and very creative video of its great favor keep doing and keep safe
Great video! what type of anchors did you use for frame attached to ceiling? How much weight would you say you could put on that? looking to do this in my garage. thanks!
Thumbs up Jay. Keep'em coming!
My old house had a place like this, wish I would have done a build like that. It would have gotten rid of a lot of clutter. I can't wait to get a house with the room to build a shop this size. Thanks for sharing Jay.
Marc Eaton You're very welcome Marc. Thanks for watching!
Just what I was looking for. Great job!
Thank you for the video as well as the idea, I'm new to wood working. What kind of screws did you use for the ceiling, as well the 3/4 " plywood, and finally for the 2×2 into the 2x4?
Coming on really well Jay.
Cheers
Mike
Mike Waldt Thanks Mike. And thanks for watching.
Pretty much the same thing in my garage... It's a great place for off-season storage. Snow shovels and sleds go up there in the summer, and patio chairs and tables (disassembled) go up there in the winter. And so on.
I used 3/8 or 1/2" osb (I forget which) on a frame of 1x2 stock. No sag after 10+ years. I put double-decker shelves on the opposite wall over the nose of the van - holds all my winter tires, as well as other stuff.
wordsnwood Good to know that after 10 years. Thanks for watching!
Wheat would you say the weight capacity would be for this set up?
The camera work looks like it was exhausting. Between positioning the camera, and moving the ladder to do the actual project, my knees are hurting just from watching. Thanks for posting
Yup. It definitely slows down the process to move the camera over and over. Thank you for watching!
I knew you would do it. Very similar to what I did with mine.
There is the law of garages.: "You will expand to fill all available space!"
LOL Good job. You will eventually need it to do a declutterization.
Steve McEntyre Hopefully I can postpone the declutterization of my shop!
JUST WHAT I NEED.THANK YOU JAY NICE VIDEO.
Nice storage. Great video. I'm sure that will be very useful.
2:38 Smart man. Construction grade lumber can be some funky stuff sometimes.
Thanks! Funky and dangerous!
Who would of thought a go-pro would be so sweet for woodworking vids!
Shop built Great super wide angle! Thanks for watching :)
It enables you to go-pro when woodworking !
I put in similar shelves when we moved into our house 12 years ago. But, with 11-foot ceilings, mine have 4 feet of height. They do accumulate a lot of stuff over the years. A suggestion: put doors on the fronts to keep out dust, etc.
David Kuhns Thanks for the suggestion David.
very nice and straightforward, I plan on doing something similar when i move into MY garage in 3 months. Thanks !
TheMarcball Your new garage or new shop? :)
Jay Bates well, sort of like you : new home being a 40-year old house we're acquiring (move planned for november) which has a full-size basement "garage" where i'll store the 1966 Mustang and my modest workshop equipment... until I build a separate garage/workshop at the other end of the garden, which I plan to be the equivalent of a 3 or 4-car garage with photovoltaic panels on the roof (project for summer 2015 ?).
you know what you get a thumbs up for no corny music :) and a decent design.
great vid and great looking shop
Thank you so much for this video. Precise, easy to follow, to the point. 2:16
Oh man, why didn't I think of this! Awesome idea Jay, I'm definitely doing the same
Colin Keevil Nice. Thanks for watching Colin.
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful! One question, why did you cut your OSB to 36” as opposed to leaving it uncut at 48”?
Awesome job. Thanks
Love your videos Jay, keep them coming mate
richard raesr Thanks Richard. Absolutely will do!
Very good work, my friend
Arturo Rincon Thank you very much Arturo. Much appreciated.
Great video production...
Tom Nally Thank you Tom. I appreciate it.
This looks good. My question is this: have you done any calculations to determine a maximum load rating? I'm guessing that the load will be dictated by the allowable shear stress in the bolts. But I would be interested in knowing how you sized everything. Thanks.
Nice. I learned long ago that storage like this should be done with wire mesh for the bottom if at all possible. makes seeing things easier and prevents dust and debris from accumulating. Wire shelving for closets works great and usually has a piece that you can hang things from when you need. But it does cost a bit more.
Wow how's the shoulders feeling after lugging that 3/4" OSB up there! Mine were hurting just watching....
3:05 - Aren't those clumps brilliant? So useful and like a second pair of hands. I can't do without them now. Nice shelves!
Very much so. They do a great job.
I meant clamps... I think "The Clumps" was an English kids show!
Henry's DIY Club
lol, close; I think you mean the Flumps! :D
I lined both long walls of my garage with shelves so a standard Tote will just slide on between the shelf and the ceiling, They hold an amazing amount of stuff and I can still walk under the shelf without hitting my head.
That's a good idea. Totes are awesome.
Great video but I was wondering if you could share the type of screws you used to attach 2x3 to ceiling. It was hard to tell if you were using lag bolts or screws. How much weight can it support? Thanks.
If 1/2 ply was used, would you need some horizontal supports to prevent sagging? Especially here in FL where the humidity is high.
looking good. my shop building is being framed at present. your videos are very helpful. when you have a chance would love to see a floor plan on how you placed your table saw and other equipment.
This might be helpful:
Shop Tour, New dust collector?? blast gates
looks like sparks are flying when you use your impact driver. I've been following your work in my 2car garage. you are a great inspiration! i was wondering if you could build the 2x4 frame before you screw it on the ceiling, wouldnt that be easier?
Shetul Saksena Maybe...but then you would have to hold the entire frame up as you secure it to the wall which would be heavier. Either way would work. thanks for watching Shetul.
Great idea! I did this in my garage and now all of my neighbors are copying me. Haha
Nice one Jay, the Shop is really looking good, that overhead space will be a great place to hide the Mother-in-law ha!ha!
Phil Sale hahaha! Lets put some doors on it first....TOTALLY JUST KIDDING!
Jay, do you think a decorative trim or cover like nice stained cedar or other nicer looking wood could be used to cover the wood you used? I want to build something like this in my house, but I want it to look nicer. Great video and thanks for sharing with us.
This video was really really really helpful!! Thank you :-)
Awesome brother!!! Definitely doing this project! 2:31
Great idea thank you so much
Thank You
Thank you for uploading this! Much appreciated. 1:26
what type & sizes of hardware did you use? no lag bolts, just construction screws? what brand, size, etc.
i build a similar storage shelf like yours, my question is in my garage ceiling, its some sort of metal bracket instead of wood, do you think that'll hold up the weight of my storage shelf?
Jay, I went a little cut happy and cut too many of my 2x4s in half. Do you think these would work to use as the support pieces from the top of the garage to the bottom shelf, or would it be better to use a full width 2x4?
I'd say you made pretty good use of an otherwise flimsy situation. Nice shelves. 2:35
Perfect idea
I know moving is a pain in the butt, but it's kinda nice being able to make all these storage decisions early on!
Peter Brown Absolutely. Hopefully (?) this will postpone a shed build.
